How Two College Friends Launched a Successful Smart Jewelry with Life Saving Technology Business Apr 08, 2019
    Show notes

Hold onto your seats folks – you’re about to take a roller coaster ride with these two startup co-founders!
Our guests, Rajia Abdelaziz and Ray Hamilton, are the founders of invisaWear, a safety jewelry company that creates smart jewelry and accessories with advanced safety technology, allowing users to instantly alert friends, family, and police during an emergency.
Rajia and Ray didn’t set out to start a tech company. They met in their sophomore year in an engineering lab at UMass Lowell and became good friends. But due to a series of events in her senior year, Rajia realized there was a strong need for a stylish, smart jewelry with safety technology product and approached her pal Ray with her idea. He responded with the suggestion “Let’s do this as our senior year class project!” Three years later, invisaWear is a vibrant, online safety jewelry company.
Since starting the company, invisaWear has been featured in many newspapers, news stations and magazines, and Rajia and Ray were named one of the top ten startups to watch in the Boston area. Over the last 12 months they finalized product development and began shipping products. And the product is already saving lives!
I met these two remarkable founders in the fall of 2016, when invisaWear was a “newborn," and I had the good fortune to be assigned as their Coach and Mentor through the Entrepreneurship for All accelerator program, where I volunteer as a Mentor.
I’ve had a front row seat to invisaWear’s growth over the last 2 and a half years, watching in awe and wonder, the extraordinary effort and commitment Rajia and Ray have made to their startup.
They give new meaning to grace under fire; in fact, if you look up hustle in the dictionary, you’ll see their photos! They are the nicest people you will ever meet, and it is a sincere privilege and honor to call them friends.
No, it wasn’t all champagne and caviar moments.
Please click the play button to find out how these two college friends took their idea and turned into a viable, profitable business! Rajia and Ray share all their startup struggles and successes, including:
•Telling their parents “we’re starting our own business” while turning down job offers
    •Finding mentors and attorneys
•Engineering a product safety technology into a stylish design
    •Competing in pitch events
•Applying to … and participating in… free accelerator programs

The Benefits of Podcast Marketing for Your Business Mar 21, 2019
    Show notes

Is podcast marketing right for your business? How much does it cost, and is it hard to get started?
Our guest, Shannon Hernandez (also knows as The Shan Man) is a 19 year radio veteran with 18 of his years spent with Arizona rock station, 98 KUPD.
He's had the opportunity to interview some of the biggest names in the rock industry like Ivan Mood of Five Finger Death Punch, Phil Labonte of All That Remains… to Ben Anderson of Nothing More, David Ellefson of Megadeth and many more.
Shannon's biggest passion is helping content creators build podcasts that make a sonic impact for listeners through sound design, branding/imaging and storytelling.
He currently holds down his normal 7-midnight shift for 98 KUPD and produces podcasts like Carey Peña Reports and the Catalyst Conversations. You can also catch him on his YouTube channel and podcast, The Swing Shift Side Hustle.
I became a devoted fan of Shannon and his remarkable work in the world 5 years ago when I had a live video show on Google Hangouts. He has helped many of us podcasters and broadcasters succeed in creating compelling content.
With a warm, welcoming ability to share his deep knowledge and love of audio and visual content creation with folks … Shannon has built a huge following everywhere he glows.
He has been instrumental in my own success as a podcast and video host – and I know you’ll love his view of the world as much as I do!
Shannon shares the strategy and tactics needed to create and build a successful podcast, how a podcast can be your "pillar content" strategy, and how affordable this strategy is to build brand awareness.
Here is a fave quote from our conversation:
"A key fundamental strategy as a business owner is you have to take time to relax and you have to recharge because burning the candle at both ends doesn't give you results all of the time. In fact, it stifles you, so you have to learn that maybe taking that day off to go to the Spring Training game is good for you and your business.

Pediatrician Creates STEM-Based Health Education Experience for Elementary School Kids Mar 18, 2019
    Show notes

Why would a hard working Pediatrician launch a business? On this episode of the Startup Life Show Dr. April Inness shares the life-changing moment that compelled her to create eekMD!
This health tech startup is a series of experiential and immersive learning programs for elementary school age children that teaches them how to advocate for their own health and communicate with health care providers.
The healthcare setting is often intimidating and scary, and children need tools to effectively communicate their symptoms, ask questions of their healthcare providers, and feel empowered.
Dr. Inniss is a licensed pediatrician and researcher with expertise in creating and evaluating media products for young children.
I was curious… and perhaps you are too… why someone … who has devoted so much time and effort to her education in and practice of medicine… why would they start a business?! Wasn't medical school hard enough? I know… that is such a limiting belief I have, right?!
I am so delighted Dr. Inniss is here to blast through my limiting beliefs and share her amazing startup story with us!
A favorite quote from our conversation:
"I separate what I consider my God-given identity from my business. Because I think when you're working so hard and so intently on something that you start to kind of conflate the two. If my business fails, I am not a failure. The business is a big part of what I do, but it's fundamentally not who I am."

Social Sound Platform helps Undiscovered Musicians Grow from Local Act to Superstar Mar 11, 2019
    Show notes

Music has always been our guest’s passion. Dalton Dellsperger, founder of the TownWave app, was an independent hip-hop artist, performing across the country and consistently putting out content, when he realized there was a problem.
There were zero platforms willing to help independent musicians succeed. Sure, you can upload your music to big platforms, but NO ONE provided a way for musicians to get their music in front of listeners that are near them and who they should be interacting with and reaching in order to increase that local buzz for their music.
Like many founders, Dalton decided to fix that problem and created TownWave, a social sound platform that allows for local musicians to reach new listeners nearby or in targeted regions.
Townwave’s goal is to level the playing field for musicians and help them grow their fan base organically. The app aims to empower musicians of all levels and allow them to develop a local buzz and eventually expand outwards.
Within the app, artists are able to upload music, target new listeners and use tools to better understand where their songs are doing well. TownWave even built a social network within the app to allow for immediate interaction between artists and the new listeners they reach.
Dalton’s role as the President and Founder is to recruit users, develop the brand, expand its local presence, manage social media, and run all live event production and promotion.
The TownWave app is available for free download on all mobile devices, in 5 countries: United States, Canada, United Kingdom, Australia and New Zealand.
Dalton currently resides in the live music capital of the world, Austin, Texas. You'll find him attending local showcases or hosting them and doing just about anything to help local musicians succeed.
I ran into Dalton at my favorite social media bar… Twitter… and am so delighted he agreed to share his startup stories with us. Bootstrapping, delivering on TownWave's brand promise, recruiting a talented CTO, creating customer experience, and managing his mindset - Dalton brings insights and action steps for founders of all industries.
Here is a favorite quote from our conversation:
I don't have any business experience in my family. I don't know anyone in my family who's a business owner or anything, so sometimes you don't realize that it's going to be a huge learning experience. To some, it may qualify as a loss, but you have to just treat every down or loss as a true learning experience and a stepping stone to getting to where you're supposed to be. I would rather fall on my face three or four times and know that it's getting me closer to that one break that's worth it. That's why baseball is my favorite sport. You strike out two out of three at bats and you hit a home run and you can win the World Series. No one will talk about the two strikeouts.
Please follow and cheer on Dalton and TownWave via the following social media platforms:

Startup Stories and Advice from Seasoned Tech Founder and Angel Investor Mar 05, 2019
    Show notes

Our guest, seasoned Tech Startup Founder and Angel Investor Igor Belagorundsky, is all about startups. As his bio on Angel.co reads: Founder of startups. Developer for startups. Adviser for startups. Investor in startups. Excited about startups. I love it!
I first met Igor at a local monthly startup pitch event called Startupalooza. He’s a judge for this event, and I had to dial up my smarty pants decoder ring to tap into his brilliant ability to quickly zoom in on a startup’s business model and ask relevant, highly valuable questions of the Founder(s).
A technical, hands-on professional with over 20 years of experience in technology based businesses, Igor is a serial entrepreneur having most recently scaled Erecruit from a team of 3 to over 120, through several rounds of investments and to a successful sale for $62.8 million dollars. Woo Hoo!
Active in the Boston startup scene as a founder, adviser, pitch competition judge and angel investor, Igor generously adds value everywhere he glows.
He’s a confident full stack enterprise architect in several technology ecosystems, a trusted leader and mentor of professional services and R&D teams in multiple time zones and industries; he’s a big believer in smart and transparent teams, open communication across the entire organization, and leadership by example.
He also just launched a new platform, FastCTO – a network of CTOs with decades of experience as actual CTOs and other C-level executives.
And when he’s not sharing his genius with the world, Igor is an avid skier, a slow runner, a decent hiker and a doting dad.
I am so delighted Igor is here to share his startup stories and advice - I know you'll hear just what you need for your startup. Here are a few quotes from our conversation:
"Your value proposition doesn't matter because you're going to pivot a dozen times before you make money. Whatever you think your value proposition is, unless it's a very specific service-oriented business or something like that, it's going to change. Your revenue streams are going to change. Everything is going to change."
"The obvious things investors look for in your deck is you have to prove that you have a well-defined problem that addresses a sufficiently large population, that your company and/or products can solve to some reasonable degree with a team that could prove that they can execute and grow the company and make money doing it in a reasonable amount of time which for an angel means three to five years max, with an exit strategy that can make investors money, where the funding you're asking for is the only thing that stands in the way."

Tech Company Helps Seniors Safely Age at Home Feb 27, 2019
    Show notes

Did you know 90% of our senior population wants to age at home? Our guest, Meetcaregivers Founder Florence Furaha, has made the process easier, safer and 50% more affordable than traditional services - and she doesn't have a tech background!
With years of experience as a caregiver, and after earning her MBA at Babson College, Florence saw a problem in the caregiver space and founded Meetcaregivers, a Massachusetts based platform using online and video technology to help families safely find and connect with qualified caregivers.
Families can go to the website and watch one to three-minute videos of caregivers in their area talking about their experience, skills, background, and availability. These videos help families get to know the caregivers before scheduling interviews.
Meetcaregivers is easier and safer than job boards such as Craigslist and Care.com. It pre-screens the caregivers and handles payments and insurance, so families never have to worry. How wonderful is that?
I saw Florence pitch Meetcaregivers at a recent pitch contest here in Boston, and I knew you would benefit from hearing her startup insights and stories – I’m so delighted she said yes when I asked her to join me for a conversation, and I know you'll love her startup story.
Funding, scaling, finding a CTO and managing her mindset, Florence shares the best insights for all founders who are launching, branding and building a business.
Meetcaregivers' mission and vision is beautifully summarized in this comment from Florence:
"According to Triple A and almost every senior that I've talked to, 90% of seniors want to age at home. They really don't want to be moving to a nursing home or an assisted living facility, so it's very important for us as a society to keep them there because that's where they want to be, and then just make it possible for them to age there in the safest way possible."
Thank you for tuning in to this episode of the Startup Life Show! Please follow and connect with Florence via the links below.

How Parisian Architect Launched Fashion Brand Simone Simon Feb 24, 2019
    Show notes

How does an architect become a fashion designer and create a fashion brand business? Our guest, Cecile Thieulin, shares her deep insights for launching a fashion brand, even when you've never stepped foot into the fashion industry.
From fundraising to design decisions to manufacturing options - Cecile brings strategies and tactics for building a fashion brand. Her startup stories and advice will also resonate with business owners across all industries and with those who are dreaming of launching their own business.
Cecile Thieulin was born in France, grew-up in Paris, studied in Barcelona and worked in New-Delhi, London and New-York before she settled in between Paris and Boston… where she works today.
Because Cecile has always had a fascination for geometry, light and shadows, shape and spaces, cities and history, she chose to study architecture.
In 2006, she started her own architectural business and, along the way … when she was looking for specific clothes she couldn’t find, she did what many women do. She decided to learn sewing and created her first pieces.
When Cecile moved to Boston in 2016 she was inspired by the incredible energy of the city, and decided to launch a creative new space for fashion.
Cecile’s fashion brand is called Simone Simon, based upon having seeing a movie with the actress Simone Simon wearing a spectacular striped shirt. Cecile was so inspired, she decided to play with stripes and lines (geometry) on the woman’s body to enhance body curves.
Today Cecile approaches fashion like she would construction of a home or building, and uses her technical background to optimize the apparel fabrication process from creation, to prototyping, to manufacturing.

“You can have a great product, the best product in the world. Your food could be so tasty, but how do those customers leave you after their purchase? What was that interaction like? For me, I really believe 40% of it might be the food, but 60% is really about how you represent to your community and how customers feel when they do business with you.”
Bob said he always makes sure his customers are satisfied, they're getting a top-notch product, but he also makes sure he has made a meaningful connection with them.
We all need to remember that with our customers and clients right?
Bob also shared an important aspect about the entrepreneurial journey.
He came from 20 years being in a call center surrounded by people ten hours a day. Now, he’s a little bit lonely. That's how it is. Being an entrepreneur, you're wearing 15 different hats, so while he may service 200 customers, the conversation is usually "What would you like?" and "Here's your change."
You're not really talking about your day, so having a support structure is so important. Bob says at home, if you don't have the support of your spouse, your kids, it's going to be really, really difficult for this startup experience to be successful. You need to have that backbone support and that really starts with home.
And yes, he said having a mentor is equally important. :-D
I met Bob at EforAll, a 12-month, non-profit accelerator program in the Greater Boston area. I was his mentor/coach, and it was my sincere pleasure and honor to watch this founder launch, brand and build his successful food truck business.
