Hosted by Pripo Teplitsky, LCMHC, a psychotherapist specializing in relationship issues. Through the experience of relationships, we get to see and understand ourselves in ways we can’t do alone. Whether it be with our partners, family, friends, co-workers, or neighbors, these relationships shape our level of happiness and contentment in life. This conversational podcast takes a casual approach to deep and personal topics. Pripo and his guests are not afraid to bring a little humor into their discussions (or his solocasts) and share intimate details about their lives and relationships. 62. HeartShare: Having Privacy vs. Keeping Secrets Oct 22, 2019
    Show notes

Honesty and open communication greatly contribute to the health of any relationship, especially intimate ones. Being open can be a struggle for couples who have different expectations about keeping secrets and where to draw the line when it comes to their privacy. Does the mantra "I'll show mine if you show me yours" establish a healthy foundation of trust in a relationship? What kind of attitude should we have to foster and maintain trust in our relationships to save ourselves from all unnecessary hurt and heartache?

Today, I dive into the differences between privacy and secrecy. I share how my wife and I dealt with privacy and secrecy in our relationship and how these circumstances affected our openness towards each other. I explain how keeping secrets diminishes your ability to build strong connections with your partner. I also discuss the different types of infidelity that can occur between couples, aside from sexual infidelity, as well as what it takes for couples to gain back the trust they lost due to keeping secrets.

"Trusting one another to be in a relationship and to show up with trust and honesty can be one of the greatest risks that you take in a relationship." - Pripo Teplitsky

    Show notes

My wife, Yvonne Rainbow Teplitsky, is the founder of Artsy Goddess Studio, where she actively carries out her role in helping others and the planet heal. Yvonne is passionate about art, as seen in the upcycled clothing she creates from second-hand materials, as well as the visual arts she creates, such as murals, paintings, and tapestries. Yvonne also helps women transform through voice empowering workshops and helps couples through workshops and retreats that she co-facilitates with me.

Today, Yvonne and I discuss the significant role that courage plays in having meaningful and authentic relationships even when threatened to face ridicule and rejection from others. We discuss the gravity of being true to ourselves and how to respond when others don't accept your apology. We also share how we had the courage to humble ourselves and take emotional risks when we honestly ask for what we want.

    • A story of a former neighbor who has wronged me and my wife and how he had the courage to apologize for his behavior.
    • The steps Yvonne took to go the extra mile as she made amends with her mother.

    60. HeartShare: Relationship Advice: Rethink Giving Advice Oct 08, 2019
    Show notes

It's an instinct for us to give advice - whether we are asked for it or not - as we show care and concern for others, especially to those who are close to our hearts. Our intentions may be good, but more often than not, giving unsolicited advice causes more harm than good. Learning how to shift our mindset about showing care and offering help as well as learning other life skills can prove to be more helpful over providing a "quick fix" through unsolicited advice.

Today, I discuss the difference between solicited and unsolicited advice and why we should reconsider giving the latter. I discuss why people feel the need to offer unsolicited advice and the role that timing plays in providing help to others. I also share how I deal with unsolicited advice in my personal and professional life and share tips on how to handle advice given by people you love.

"Advice assumes that our perspective is the right one and that the way that we see things will work perfectly for others." - Pripo Teplitsky

This week on Relationships! Let's Talk About It:

    • How to avoid giving unsolicited advice and still get the point across to the other person.
    • How to know if the other person is ready to hear your advice.
    • How setting a firm boundary about homeschooling my son helped me and my mom learn to respect each other's boundaries around unsolicited advice.
    • Why men need to stop giving unsolicited advice to their partner when their driving.
    • How to tell others that you're not up to hearing unsolicited advice.
    • Why unsolicited advice from loved ones can be threatening.
    • How rephrasing my concern towards my son's wake board helped me practice and model good parenting.
    • How giving unsolicited advice to teenagers or your own children affect the way they see themselves.
    • Different ways to address concerns with your children or teenagers without having to give unsolicited advice.
    • Why giving unsolicited advice can be detrimental to others.
    • The appropriate approach to provide space for others to open up.
    • The intent to understand vs. the intent to reply.
    • How to make people experience having powerful and lasting impressions on the decisions they make.

    Show notes

Maureen McCarthy, an extraordinary woman who lives joyfully despite a two-decade-long migraine and 10% lung capacity because of a rare, genetic lung disease, is the co-director of Center for Collaborative Awareness. Together with her husband, Maureen co-founded a process that helps build and keep sincere and strong relationships. This process, called the Blueprint of We Collaboration Process, is used globally by couples, families, schools, and businesses both large and small.

Maureen and I discuss the five components that help people build, design, and maintain collaborative relationships. We discuss how the safety brain and connected brain neurocircuitry work in custom-designing your relationships. We also discuss how Maureen applies these principles in her life to manage her pain and live a rich life with extraordinarily healthy relationships with herself, her health, and others.

Knowing ourselves well involves understanding ourselves so we can be emotionally available in our relationships. I discuss why people are emotionally unavailable in relationships, how to deal with the challenges associated with it, and what you can do to make others feel comfortable with opening up and being emotionally available. I also share how my perspective of the male emotional world has changed since my childhood and how my family and I experienced a deeper level of connectedness, honesty, and love in spite of a family conflict.

    Show notes

My wife, Yvonne Rainbow Teplitsky is a brilliant artist, originally from Denmark, who creates art such as tapestries, paintings, and other eccentric pieces from diverse materials. She is the owner of Artsy Goddess Studio, an upcycled clothing business using high-quality second-hand clothing. She is also passionate about empowering women to express themselves through the workshops and gatherings she hosts in Black Mountain, North Carolina.

Yvonne joins me today to share how we take accountability and responsibility in our relationship and discuss how you can repair your relationships faster through self-soothing. We share a recent story about how we resolved a conflict regarding sexual intimacy and the power of accountability and apology when done correctly. 53. A Father-Son Conversation Aug 20, 2019
    Show notes

My son, Zander Teplitsky, is currently living in the Netherlands while attending college at Maastricht University. Zander and his girlfriend, Emma, recently came home to visit over summer break, and we've shared so many interesting conversations.

Zander joins me today for a father-son conversation about our relationship and how we cultivated our relationship through honesty, communication, and appreciation. We discuss how we continually inspire and motivate each other and why Zander inspired me to start a podcast. We discuss why it's important for parents to cultivate a level of friendship with their children, the qualities Zander believes helps our relationship thrive, and how communication, honesty, and appreciation helps build trust and respect between parents and their children. We also discuss how allowing your children to make mistakes helps cultivate a sense of freedom while enabling them to learn and grow independently as well as how Zander developed his positive outlook on life and his perspective on the world.

"We try really hard every day to be as present with each other, and as loving, and as honest as we can." - Zander Teplitsky
