Real Talk 173: ‘The Fasting Doctor’ Dr. Cecily Anne Gives The Skinny On Fasting For Pregnancy And Weight Loss Jul 09, 2020
    Show notes

It’s Thursday and that means another action-packed episode of the realest talk on the internet–Real Talk with Jimmy Moore and Dr. Will Cole. Dr. Cole is taking a few weeks off so today Jimmy is joined by Dr. Cecily Anne to talk about fasting and pregnancy.

“We can all agree that we should avoid alcohol and drugs while pregnant, but because sugar and refined carbohydrates are so common, it’s difficult to talk about the negative effects of this food.”

    - Dr. Cecily Anne

“I have a theory; fasting fits nicely with just about every diet plan.”

    - Jimmy Moore

Dr. Cecily Anne Clark-Ganheart, MD, FACOG is a maternal-fetal and obesity medicine physician and speaker, located in the Kansas City Area. She became interested in obesity medicine after her struggles with weight loss. Like many of you, Dr. Cecily Anne would experience temporary weight loss, only to regain much of what she lost.

At the time of the birth of her second son, she reached her highest adult weight of 264 pounds. That was in 2014. After that time, she had multiple attempts at weight loss. Dr. Cecily Anne reached a weight of 202 pounds through an employer-sponsored weight loss program at the time. However, the weight began to return, though she followed the plan.

In 2017, Dr. Cecily Anne came across a book recommendation, entitled, The Obesity Code by Dr. Jason Fung. It discussed intermittent fasting and presented obesity as a disease, rather than a lack of will power. The next book I read was Deep Nutrition by Dr. Cate Schanahan, which talked about a more ancestral approach to eating involving whole, real foods.

Listen in today as Jimmy is joined by Dr. Cecily Anne as they talk all about the topic of fasting, especially as it intersects with pregnancy and how weight loss factors in. This is a REAL TALK you definitely don’t want to miss!

    – Jimmy Moore

“If you’re overfat and you try to do the same things as people that are naturally thin, you will probably not have the same results.”

    – Dr. Ted Naiman

Ted Naiman is a board-certified Family Medicine physician in the department of Primary Care at a leading major medical center in Seattle. His research and medical practice are focused on the practical implementation of diet and exercise for health optimization. Listen in today as Jimmy welcomes co-host Dr. Ted Naiman to talk about the proper balance of protein VS. fat, and maybe even small portions of carbohydrate in your diet. Especially in the Keto community, the arguments about protein vs. fat, and their proper place in the human diet has been the source of many an argument, but does it have to be that way? Are the theories about macro balance we spout set in stone for everyone? Find out in this explosive and sometimes controversial special episode of REAL TALK!

171: The Indelible Health Connection Between The Brain And The Gut Jun 25, 2020
    Show notes

It’s Thursday and that means another action-packed episode of the realest talk on the internet–Real Talk with Jimmy Moore and Dr. Will Cole. Today we talk about the intricate relationship between the gut and the brain.

“If there’s anything we want to impart to our listeners is ‘Take care of YOU.”

    - Jimmy Moore

“A lot has changed in our diet, from disruption of the microbiome to the breakdown of nutrients in our food.”

    - Dr. Will Cole

Today Jimmy and Will take a deep look at the fascinating connection between the brain and the gut. How can the brain possibly affect how our gut reacts, and how can the gut possibly have anything to do with mood and a sense of well being? Find out in this explosive special episode of REAL TALK!

It’s easy to take for granted what a brilliant biological machine the brain is. This amazing organ manages every aspect of your body — from your thoughts to your hormones, muscles and digestion.

Sadly, diseases of the brain are rampant in our society.

The National Institute of Mental Health estimates that close to 20% of American adults currently suffer from a diagnosable mental disorder. And the U.S shells out around $113 billion every year on mental health treatment. These figures don’t even factor in the cost of autoimmune brain problems like Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, Multiple Sclerosis and autism — which are affecting more people every year.

With an increasing number of brain health problems we have to ask: why? Functional medicine is concerned with investigating the root causes.

Read more about this fascinating topic here at Mind Body Green.

“We have to start with diet and exercise, but we also have to prepare our minds for change. You can be mindful, but then what do you do?”

    – Dr. Caroline Leaf

“It seems to me that some people are falling apart while some people rise above the daily struggles. I’m interested in the intersection of these things.”

    – Jimmy Moore

“Dr. Leaf is doing amazing research in connecting the brain and the body.”

    – Dr. Will Cole

Dr. Caroline Leaf is a communication pathologist and cognitive neuroscientist with a Masters and PhD in Communication Pathology and a BSc Logopaedics, specializing in cognitive and metacognitive neuropsychology. Since the early 1980s she has researched the mind-brain connection, the nature of mental health, and the formation of memory. She was one of the first in her field to study how the brain can change (neuroplasticity) with directed mind input.

During her years in clinical practice and her work with thousands of underprivileged teachers and students in her home country of South Africa and in the USA, she developed her theory (called the Geodesic Information Processing theory) of how we think, build memory, and learn, into tools and processes that have transformed the lives of hundreds of thousands of individuals with Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI), Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE), learning disabilities (ADD, ADHD), autism, dementias and mental ill-health issues like anxiety and depression. She has helped hundreds of thousands of students and adults learn how to use their mind to detox and grow their brain to succeed in every area of their lives, including school, university, and the workplace.

Listen in today to hear Dr. Leaf discuss the topic of toxic trauma and how these adverse effects can follow us throughout life and cause problems that might not be easy to pin down.

168: Methylationcast: MTHFR And Other Gene Variants That Could Be Impacting Your Health May 28, 2020
    Show notes

It’s Thursday and that means another action-packed episode of the realest talk on the internet–Real Talk with Jimmy Moore and Dr. Will Cole. Today we bring you a special presentation we call the Methylationcast!

“Methylation happens about a billion times every second in the body, but we still don’t understand the totality of it, not even close.”

    - Dr. Will Cole

“DNA testing is so accessible to the general public now. This information is accessible to just about everyone now.”

    - Jimmy Moore

In the chemical sciences, methylation denotes the addition of a methyl group on a substrate, or the substitution of an atom by a methyl group. Methylation is a form of alkylation, with a methyl group replacing a hydrogen atom.

Your genetics influence almost every aspect of your health. Everything from your weight, mood, hormones, and immune system can be traced back to your DNA. As humans we want to know as much about ourselves as possible and because of this the demand for direct-to-consumer genetic testing has grown. For only $100 you can get a kit delivered right to your house for you to send in and get a complete summary of your genetics and ancestry. You can identify distant cousins around the world and conclude what percentage Neanderthal you are because really, who doesn’t want to know that?!

As a functional medicine practitioner Dr. Cole is less concerned with your particular ethnic heritage and more with what role genetics play in your health and how knowing your DNA can make you aware of your risk factors for certain illnesses. But are these tests really worth it or just an easy way for the health industry to make a few dollars? Let’s find out by first looking at the two most popular tests:

    1. AHCY 2. BHMT 3. CBS 4. COMT 5. MAO 6. MTHFR 7. MTR/MTRR 8. VDR 9. Detox genes
