Dad Bod Rap Pod Ep. 126: 'The Odd Squad' with guest The Koreatown Oddity Jul 10, 2020
    Show notes

Great episode this week, the fellas discuss the impacts of shelter-in-place on their relationships to food, talk a bit about newly released music, and just generally catch up. Next up is an interview with The Koreatown Oddity. His new album Little Dominiques Nosebleed is a masterful self-produced concept album about his life to this point. It's unique, richly detailed, and must be heard to be believed. TKO is really engaging and funny in our brief interview, check it out.

Beats for this week's show were provided by Small Professor, show him some love on social media or better yet buy something on Bandcamp. DBRP is a member of the Pantheon Podcast network.

Rock's Backpages Ep. 78: Sheryl Garratt on Rave Culture + Terry Farley Audio + The Streets Jul 09, 2020
    Show notes

In this week's episode, we welcome former Face editor Sheryl Garratt into RBP's Zoomworld to ask her about rave and club culture – and how we got from disco to acid house to 2020's quarantine raves. Sheryl discusses her newly-reissued/revised 1999 classic Adventures in Wonderland and looks back on her journey from the NME to The Observer. Mark, Barney & Jasper ask her about her seminal 1986 Face piece on Chicago's House scene – and about Ecstasy and 1988's "second summer of love".

Clips from the week's new audio interview, a 2005 conversation between DJ History's Bill & Frank and Shoom/Boy's Own legend Terry Farley, provide the perfect springboard for further reminiscence of House music and the UK's ever-fecund club scene. Sheryl also pitches in on the week's Free On RBP feature about fellow Brummie Mike (The Streets) Skinner, whose classic track 'Weak Become Heroes' was arguably the greatest elegy for the rave era. We hear a clip of Skinner speaking to Gavin Martin in 2002 and celebrate that year's splendid Original Pirate Material album.

Among the new RBP library additions considered are Hugh Nolan's Disc report on London's psychedelic temple the UFO club (1967), a slightly unlikely 1989 encounter between David Toop and Bakersfield country icon Buck Owens, and Chris Heath's hilarious 1997 Rolling Stone cover story on the Spice Girls. Jasper takes us out with observations on a pointless Tim Buckley tribute album (2000) and an interview with Public Service Broadcasting's amusingly-monikered J. Willgoose , Esquire …

Many thanks to special guest Sheryl Garratt; buy Adventures in Wonderland on Amazon and visit her website at sherylgarratt.com.

Pieces discussed: House sound of Chicago, Blackpool Weekender, 1988 and all that, Terry Farley audio, The Streets audio, The Streetser, The Streetsest, UFO Club, George Harrison, Al Green, Buck Owens, Neil Kulkarni's letter to MM, Spice Girls, Tim Buckley tribute, Tim Buckley live, James Blood Ulmer, Public Service Broadcasting and Britney Spears.

Rock Candy Ep 126: No Doubt's Tragic Kingdom - Skrog Rock Jul 09, 2020
    Show notes

This album was not No Doubt's first rodeo, but it was certainly the one to put them on the map. Listen through it with us and see how it still holds up. The 90's nostalgia is strong in this one, but in all the right ways. We discover how very much Gwen Stefani wants to get married, how the band stepped up their game despite their leader quitting, and how this is a modern day version of the album Rumors. Maggie spends most of the time being constantly reminded on how she didn't have cable growing up, and Ashleigh discovers that she missed a bullet by not dating Gavin Rosdale.

    The Devil's Music 05: Steve Balderson Jul 08, 2020

Steve and hostess Pleasant Gehman-whose appeared in several of his films - share incredibly twisted tales of location film shoots and debauchery in London, Hong Kong, Palm Springs and on the French Riviera for the Cannes Film Festival.

And you might want to pull over if you’re driving: at the end of this episode Steve, who is a Certified Master Practitioner of NLP and hypnosis, uses his skills to literally put listeners in a hypnotic trance.

    Rock N Roll Archaeology Episode 19: 1969 Part II Jul 08, 2020
    Show notes

This episode is dedicated with love to the memory of our dear friend Dennis Gordon. Dennis was the big booming voice on our show “bumpers” that would begin and end each chapter of Rock N Roll Archaeology. Thank you Dennis, we miss you. May the Four Winds blow you safely home.

Welcome back to the second half of our big chapter telling the big story of a big year in Rock. If you haven’t done so already, we highly recommend you listen to Episode 18 before you delve into this one!

We tell the story of 1969 by telling the story of four concerts: The Beatles on the Roof, The Rolling Stones in Hyde Park was the first part. Part Two will take us to the peak, to the apotheosis of Woodstock...and to the abyss at Altamont. And we’ll go to some other places in between too.

1969 is the year Rock N Roll goes global, and we’ll get into that a little, and set up later discussions of great topics like Rock behind the Iron Curtain and the growing influence of Reggae and World Beat.

Then we’ll take you to Woodstock, and call off the roster, with lots of great music and commentary.

The first mythical Rock tour--the Rolling Stones ‘69 tour of America, is up next. That will take us to the final show of the tour, on a dark December night in California, where everything that can go wrong, will go wrong, and the consequences will be tragic.

We close out with some thoughts on the year and on the decade we’ve just completed, and on what comes next.

Performance Anxiety: Dearly Beloved Jul 07, 2020
    Show notes

This show features the band Dearly Beloved. The band’s mainstays are Rob Higgins and Niva Chow. Rob grew up in the presence of great music. He started going to Rush concerts while he was still in single digits and hanging out with his uncle, Geddy Lee. After the death of his father, Rob really wanted to just make music with people he loved. That was 14 years ago and the beginning of Dearly Beloved. But there’s a lot more in this show; like the time Rob toured with Our Lady Peace and had four days to learn all the keyboard parts on paper towels. There’s the time his arm blew up. And how about the time Dearly Beloved recorded an entire album and forgot about it? Well, they’ve recently released a new album called Times Square Discount that they haven’t forgotten about. It’s a really wild album. Check it out on bandcamp or wherever you get your music nowadays. Follow the @thebeloveds on social media. Follow their bird, Bruce Lee @bruceleebeverlyhillsbird on IG. He’s relentless. But this show is pretty chill. Check out Rob Higgins & Niva Chow here on Performance Anxiety.
