Highway Hi-Fi: Desert Island Recordings- 'The Pod' by Ween Jul 14, 2020
    Show notes

Ween set forth on a career-long ambition to tear down standard music industry conventions by hook or by crook. To take that which is weird, obnoxious, and unclean, and show it as important as the falsely pristine parts of life. They were never more successful in this endeavor than on their 76 minute slog of a second record, The Pod. Recorded alone together in Dean and Gene Ween’s apartment that was a converted barn smack dab in the middle of a horse field while both were suffering through mono and high on, well, probably everything. The record sounds like you need to scrape off layers and layers of shit and grime to get the pop tunes hidden within. Underneath the juvenile jokes, the impressive assemblage of vulgarity, fast food orders, molasses-dipped song-smithing, sonic fuckery, squishy atmosphere, and overall friendly misanthropic posturing is a solid and comprehensive American pop music revue. Dinner theater at the slaughterhouse.

So, tonight’s offering...another scoop of isolation but this time with a heaping of flies, scotch guard, and glandular fever. If you’ve ever woken up and found that someone had taken a deuce on your kitchen floor, you’ve already sort of heard this masterpiece. The sludgiest, brownest record of Ween’s illustrious decades long trouncing of indie music. Come on, it's a beautiful night for a walk on the beach, wouldn't you say?

Let It Roll: Robert Johnson Revised - What Have We Learned From Elijah Wald's Escaping The Delta? Jul 14, 2020
    Show notes

Today special guest scholar and musician Yuri Campbell returns, to review the key lessons we learned from Nate’s discussion with Elijah Wald about his book Escaping The Delta: Robert Johnson & the Invention of the Blues.”

Nate and Yuri evaluate Wald’s boldly revisionist take on Robert Johnson and debate whether or not Wald succeeded in re-assessing Johnson from the perspective of his peers and contemporaries in contrast with the romantic myth of Johnson long propagated in the folk & rock communities.

No Filler: Ethan Durelle - White Knuckles On Turned Wheels with Joel Fruth Jul 13, 2020
    Show notes

If you were a teenager in the 2000s and grew up near Dallas, TX, you probably went to your fair share of live music in Deep Ellum like we did. On this week's episode, we chat with the former General Manager and part owner of The Door and The Prophet Bar, Joel Fruth. He's got some first hand stories to share about the one and only Ethan Durelle, the underrated and extremely talented post-punk indie outfit from Waco, TX. Their debut record, White Knuckles On Turned Wheels, and the sound they cultivated can best be described, as Joel puts it: "Radiohead and Death Cab for Cutie were married, and then Death Cab divorced Radiohead and married Incubus."

Is it Rolling, Bob? Talking Dylan: Rob Stoner Jul 12, 2020
    Show notes

Rolling Thunder Revue bass player and bandleader Rob Stoner on Jacques Levy, Emmylou Harris, Sam Shepard and how he “made out with Joan Baez on a motel room balcony” for Renaldo & Clara. Rob also sets the record straight on the Scorsese Netflix film: “I got a beef with that Van Dorp character!” and alerts us to his uncredited harmony vocal on Abandoned Love.

What was it like playing live with Bob? “Sink or swim. If you’re good enough, you ought to be able to swim”. Did Bob actually never speak to Mick Ronson on the Rolling Thunder tour? “It was written into the contract”. The Fort Collins concert, where Hard Rain was recorded? “Bob was in a foul mood, man.”

Other insights include how Elvis miffed Bob, rehearsal details for the 1978 Alimony Tour and John Lennon’s “Dylan imitation” on Ticket To Ride. Roll up, roll up - for an historic episode.

While still in school, Rob Stoner was signed to a songwriting contract by Leiber and Stoller. As a session musician, he played and sang on classic recordings including American Pie. His albums with Dylan include Desire, Hard Rain, Bob Dylan At Budokan and Live 1975. Following his stint with Bob, Rob released a critically-acclaimed album of original songs on MCA Records. He also became the first non-Southerner to release an album on Sun Records. His songs have been recorded by Link Wray, Johnny Winter and Robert Gordon. He has played with Chuck Berry, Ringo Starr, Bruce Springsteen, Stevie Ray Vaughan and countless others. Rob lives in Rockland County, New York, where he remains active on the music scene.
