The Career Musician Ep. 51: Managing Your B(r)and with Xander Smith & Baron Grafft Jul 18, 2020
    Show notes

Xander is joined by mutual good friend of Nomad and his, Baron Graft who initially brought these two together for this podcast. What ensues is a fun convo about music and life and how the business of sales is so closely related to the entertainment industry!

Outside is the sophomore release from LA singer/songwriter Xander Smith. Making records in 2014 typically means you now bring a laptop along with your old beat up Gibson J-45 -- no matter what, wherever you go. So, all last year, Smith found himself not only touring, but writing/tracking on three continents. The result is 10 new gems featuring musicians from LA to Manchester to Moscow. Members of New Order, Jack Johnson, Johnny Marr Band, Draco Rosa, Herb Alpert/Lani Hall, The Go Gos and Adam Lambert all put their stamp on this new album.

While Smith sold out two pressings of his debut record, Hey San Pedro, out of the trunk of his car--Jay Z style—and then online and at shows, labels/distributors around the globe have caught wind of his music and constant touring. Outside will now reach North America, Europe, Russia and Australia/New Zealand. “Say Anything” is the first single which features Bernard Sumner (Joy Division/Electronic/New Order) on melodica/backing vocals. His band mates Stephen Morris, Phil Cunningham and Tom Chapman, along with many other gifted players help Smith craft a record that covers a lot of ground within the singer/songwriter genre. Nods to legends Nick Drake, Big Star, Jack Johnson, Bright Eyes and Paul Simon are all apparent as Smith presents his stories and melodies, blending in these different influences with his own honest, straight forward approach.

Deeper Digs: Weird Al - Seriously with Lily Hirsch Jul 17, 2020
    Show notes

This week the Rock N Roll Archaeologist goes Weird!!

Well Christian sits down with Lily Hirsch, author of the new book Weird Al: Seriously.

From his love of accordions and Hawaiian print shirts to his popular puns and trademark dance moves, "Weird Al" Yankovic has made a career out of making us laugh.

Funny music is often dismissed as light and irrelevant, but Yankovic’s fourteen successful studio albums prove there is more going on than comedic music's reputation suggests. In this book, for the first time, the parodies, original compositions, and polka medleys of the Weird Al universe finally receive their due respect. Lily Hirsch weaves together original interviews with the prince of parody himself, creating a fresh take on comedy and music’s complicated romance. She reveals that Yankovic’s jests have always had a deeper meaning, addressing such topics as bullying, celebrity, and racial and gender stereotypes.

Weird Al is undeterred by those who say funny music is nothing but a low-brow pastime. And thank goodness. With his good-guy grace still intact, Yankovic remains unapologetically and unmistakably himself. Reveling in the mischief and wisdom of Yankovic’s forty-year career, this book is an Al-expense-paid tour of a true comedic and musical genius.

Lily E. Hirsch has written four books on topics ranging from Jewish music's history to music in criminal law. One, in 2014, won the American Musicological Society's Ruth A. Solie Award. When not teaching or writing as a visiting scholar at California State University, Bakersfield, Hirsch blogs at insultingmusic.com. She lives in Bakersfield, California.

Dad Bod Rap Pod Ep. 127- 'To Live and Die' with The Questions, Felicia Viator, AWOL ONE Jul 16, 2020
    Show notes

This week we have built an episode around the city of Los Angeles. First up the fellas tell some stories of memorable visits to LA. Then we have an interview with Sean Kantrowitz and DJ Steve 1der of LA-based trivia game The Questions Hip Hop. The Questions began as a live event that has now morphed into a popular live stream that combines interviews with an interactive trivia game. They have had an illustrious guest list on the live stream thus far (including us!) and are making serious moves to grow their brand. Next up we have an interview with author Felicia Viator. Felicia is a former DJ (bay areans may remember her exploits as DJ Neta) who is now a history professor at San Francisco State University. She wrote a book called To Live and Defy In LA: How Gangsta Rap Changed America and she joins us to discuss the text and how the current protests against police brutality have roots in the 1992 LA uprising. In an unprecedented move we have a third interview for you. MC AWOL ONE, who possesses one of hip-hop's iconic voices, joins us to talk about Project Blowed, The Shapeshifters, wordless raps, and his upcoming project with Pigeon John.

I'm In Love With That Song: Boston - 'Hitch A Ride' Jul 15, 2020
    Show notes

It Came From Boston (Vol. 3): MIT graduate/Polaroid employee Tom Scholz recorded an album's worth of songs in his basement in Watertown, MA after work, and somehow the record eventually sold 25 million copies worldwide. Along with Brad Delp, Sib Hashian and some other guys (maybe?), were they the inventors of Corporate Rock, or the most successful DIY debut of all time? You decide.
