Dealing With Unsolicited Comments About Your Body (Outweigh) Jan 14, 2023
    Show notes

OUTWEIGH: How do you handle a man calling you husky? Cryo Kat (Katherine Cox) joins Amy to talk about the time her grandma’s boyfriend called attention to her pregnant body by saying: “Well, aren’t you looking husky!!!” He then proceeded to tell her that his wife didn’t really gain any weight when she was pregnant with all 5 of their kids!! Well, Kat gained 100 pounds while pregnant, so she clearly found his words hurtful and beyond annoying. Kat has also dealt with an ex husband that killed her confidence…it’s almost like her body was never good enough for him…even when she felt her best.

This chat is a friendly reminder to not comment on people’s bodies!! People can even have good intentions with their comment (i.e. complimenting weight loss, but weight loss doesn’t always = good and weight gain doesn’t always = bad!)

If someone does make a comment about your body (or food you’re eating) that you’re not comfortable with…you’re allowed to share your feelings and say that you’d like to change the subject!!

The Words You Say About Food (& Your Body) Matter (Outweigh) Jan 07, 2023
    Show notes

OUTWEIGH: Do you ever say that a particular food is bad or good? The words we say about food matter!! Dr. Amy Porto (@dr.amyporto) is our expert guest today and she talks with Amy about words that matter when it comes to food because that often extends to what we say about our body…which leads to what we think of our body…and ultimately our self and self-worth.

Dr. Amy Porto is an anti-diet registered dietitian, nutrition educator, and certified intuitive eating counselor. As an expert in her field with over 20 years of experience, Dr. Porto speaks the truth about nutrition. Her purpose is to disrupt mainstream diet culture with real science, a dash of humor, and a little bit of common sense. She believes you shouldn’t need a PhD to decode food labels at the grocery store. Breaking down complex information about food and nutrition into digestible bite-sized pieces of information is her passion — plus, she loves a good pun. Her ultimate goal is to help you trust your body and reclaim your relationship with food.

    Orthorexia + Whole30 (Outweigh) Dec 24, 2022
    Show notes

OUTWEIGH: Orthorexia in its simplest terms means an obsession with healthy eating, and for people who are not immersed in this field, that may not sound like a bad thing because eating healthy isn’t bad. So, this week, Kat is diving into the topic to bring light to what becoming obsessed with the health and quality of the food we consume can do to our mental health. Someone who develops orthorexia most likely doesn’t start out being obsessed but things can take a turn pretty fast not just due to reasons associated with the individual. This issue is very much connected to our culture and the messaging companies and brands use to attract and illicit business and the manipulation involved in how diet culture sells their ideals and products. So, sit tight and get ready to hear how some of the most popular diets and diet buzz words have created a rise in some of the most stealth disordered eating patterns we are currently seeing today.

When Music Helps You Heal From An Eating Disorder (Outweigh) Nov 26, 2022
    Show notes

OUTWEIGH: Singer/Song-writer Maura Streppais Amy's guest today! Maura battled with an eating disorder for most of her life, but didn’t realize it until she was a freshman in college. She started recovery over COVID and really used songwriting to help get through it. She wrote a song called “Skinnier” that comes out December 2nd and hopes it will help others feel less alone + encourage them to NOT think that life will be better if/when they are skinnier!!

    About Maura:
There is a place where country meets soul meets pop. That sweet spot exists in the heart of singer/songwriter, Maura Streppa. Heavily influenced by Bob Dylan, John Prine, Amy Winehouse, Kacey Musgraves, and more, Maura uniquely and effortlessly creates a home for lovers of the old and the new alike. Hailing from the suburbs of Chicago, Maura discovered her love for music at a young age. After a move from the city to the south lands of North Carolina, Maura found that her mother’s piano keys helped her express her deepest emotions. It was from that moment on that she decided she wanted to share these cathartic songs with the world. Maura continued writing, singing, and sharing until the age of 18, when she was asked to play the Carolina Country Music Festival and to open for country music star, Jimmie Allen. It was in that opportunity that Maura became more sure than ever that singing country music for thousands of people was what she wanted to do with her life. She promptly packed her bags and made her way to Music City. Since making the big move to Nashville, Maura has been performing almost every single night, sharing her soulful songs with those who cross her path. She recently won Tennessee Songwriter’s Week and made her debut at The Bluebird Cafe with her song, “Singer and The Song”. The eclectic artist has a strong conviction to create music with authenticity, love, and purpose and works hard to carry out that calling every day.
