It’s Time To Do Eating Disorder Recovery Differently with Kristie Amadio (Outweigh) Mar 25, 2023
    Show notes

OUTWEIGH: Certified eating disorder coach Kristie Amadio is our guest today. After 14 years of battling her eating disorder and seeking treatment in both Australia and New Zealand—where she was told she was ‘chronic’ and should expect to struggle with food and body image issues for the rest of her life—Kristie flew to America for intensive treatment and made a full recovery. Kristie was stunned by the gap and unequal access to support and resources both here and overseas, so she resolved to make cost effective support available to everyone, no matter where they lived. By working online and living with people in recovery all around the world, Kristie Amadio is adding a new dimension to the platform used to treat eating disorders.

“All you need is to have the curiosity of what it would be like to not have an eating disorder in order to start your journey to recovery.” - Kristie Amadio

OUTWEIGH: It is estimated that over 30 million Americans will have an eating disorder in their lifetime, and something you may not be aware of is that In the United States, eating disorders are the second most fatal mental illness, surpassed only by opioid use disorder. Both of those stats are wild.

It's National Eating Disorder Awareness Week, so NEDA and other organizations will spend the week focusing on people with eating disorders and educating others about eating disorders — both of which are key to change. We highly encourage you to check out the NEDA website for info, tools, support, helplines, etc... It is: nationaleatingdisorders.org

5 Mental Health Self-Help Ideas for you to keep in your back pocket:

    -Keep a Gratitude Journal
    -Focus on Sleep
-Soak up Uncomplicated Relationships (for example, your pets!!)
    -Tap Into Your Creativity

If you're here because you're curious about whether or not you even have disordered eating behaviors, Mental Health America has an eating disorder test up on their website - the link will also be in the show notes. This test can't diagnose an eating disorder, but it can help you understand where you are. So looking into where you fall with this screening tool could be helpful.

    Show notes

OUTWEIGH: Amy has had many disordered eating behaviors over the last 25 years, binge eating being one of them. A couple of questions Amy had early on in her recovery from binge eating were: "What is the difference between binge eating and overeating?" and "How can I tell the difference between the voices of my lower brain (that causes binges) and my higher brain (that could stop me from the binges)?" She answers both of those questions from her personal experience and the tools that worked best for her.

Do You Binge Eat? Habits In Your Brain Are Likely To Blame (Outweigh) Jan 21, 2023
    Show notes

OUTWEIGH: Did you know snapping a rubber band on your wrist can help stop a negative pattern in the brain? Did you know you can create more self-acceptance by consistently saying 3 things in the mirror that you like about yourself? Did you know creating new habits in the brain might be more beneficial to your recovery than working through emotions?
Amy is answering these questions with her expert guest, Sheri Rowney, certified LENS (neurofeedback) practitioner & owner of Harmonized Brain Center.
‘Brain Over Binge’ (by Katheryn Hansen) is a book that was instrumental in Amy’s recovery from a very grueling binge, restrict, purge cycle. Amy & Sheri also talk about this quote from the book:
“I never want to discourage anyone from resolving issues in their lives, but I do want binge eaters to avoid working endlessly on other problems and emotions without ever addressing the habit in the brain.” - Brain over Binge 2nd Edition, pg. 243
