Learning to Love My Body Will Take Time, But I'm Okay With That (Outweigh) Jun 03, 2023
    Show notes

OUTWEIGH: We're bombarded with pressure to look a certain way. It can be overwhelming and constantly worrying about your appearance can distract you from living your life. Amy wants you to feel empowered by rejecting these thoughts and to start practicing radical self-love! To help you REFRAME things, Amy shares positive affirmations/mantras that will help you on your journey towards loving yourself more: mindy, body and soul! The goal of the affirmations is to train your brain to overcome self-sabotaging thoughts. Reframing takes time, but you are worth it, and it can start with 1 simple affirmation (although Amy shares several for you to work with!) Amy also closes this episode out with 2 journaling prompts that will help you have more positive thoughts about yourself and gratitude for your body!

Are You Using Food & Exercise As A Weapon? (Outweigh) May 27, 2023
    Show notes

OUTWEIGH: I’ve been on diets and weight loss programs since the age of 7.

I got really good at outsmarting whatever plan or program I was on.

I got really good at “fake it till you make it” and motivational pump-me-ups.

I got really good at tricking the scale, tricking my stomach, and tricking my mind.

I got really good at living my life hungry, tired, miserable and restricted.

Yup I mastered them alright, but there was a major cost.

Food was the boss of me.

    And...

I was a slave to my brutal workout routine to ensure that I didn’t gain anything back.

Because no matter how motivated or disciplined I got myself to be on a day to day basis, food and exercise still ruled my every move.

So how can YOU tell if you’re using food and exercise as a tool to get yourself healthy? Or...

...if you’re using it as a weapon: a weapon of punishment, control, restriction, or shame.

In this episode of Outweigh we talk about four tell-tale signs to help you discover if you too are using food & exercise as a weapon AND if so, how you can change that!

Why Weekend Self Sabotage Is ‘A Thing’ (And What To Do About It) (Outweigh) May 20, 2023
    Show notes

OUTWEIGH: For the first (near) 30 years of my life, my relationship with food had 2 'modes'.

    ✔️ On

    -OR-

    ❌ Off

There was no middle ground for me. I was either walking around day-in, day-out as:

👮‍♀️ My Inner Food Police: 🚨

Micromanaging every morsel of food I ate or thought about eating. Controlling myself, restricting myself, punishing myself, and persuading myself not to eat certain things because they were "bad" or "not healthy". Obsession. Harsh judgments. All that shame, blame, guilt, comparison, and perfectionism...

    -OR-

🍨 🍕My Inner Rebel (See also: Inner Glutton!) 🍩🍔

Carefree abandonment – eating whatever I could get my hands on. Gluttonously over-stuffing myself. Binging on the weekends. Utter lack of care of my body, what I ate, how I moved, and my health in general. But also feeling like I had to "get it all in" over the weekend before I went back into "Police" mode on Monday.

And THIS was my life for nearly 30 years!

Bouncing from one extreme to the other: I would diet and restrict until I couldn’t possibly take it anymore, and then....I would TOTALLY let myself go.

But the day came that I hit my 'enough is enough' point, and I realized that if I didn't change my STRATEGY and change the STORIES around food and my body that were keeping me stuck, this is how it would ALWAYS be!

And that scared the crap out of me, and THAT is when I knew I had to set out to change it.

    Because...

★ I was SICK of all the dieting and restricting and constantly playing 'food police'.

★ I was SICK of all the judging and shaming and EMOTION that came alongside food.

★ I was SICK of hating what I had to DO, who I had to BE, and how I had to FEEL to get the "body I always wanted".

It was EXHAUSTING. And I was the OPPOSITE of FREE.

So if YOU are still stuck on that on-again, off-again roller coaster with food or your body or your emotions, I'm here to tell you:

There IS a better way! And you don't have to live like this!

And that’s why I break down what’s happening deep down in your BRAIN when this happens...and how to stop it in its tracks.

Why You Stopped Trusting Yourself (and how to earn your own trust back) (Outweigh) May 13, 2023
    Show notes

OUTWEIGH: Have you ever gone to start a new plan or program, and on the surface you're gung- ho -- ready to take it by the reins, deeply committed, and hoping (praying!) that this time really IS different -- that this will be the 'the thing' that changes everything for you...

...but secretly in the back of your mind, you're WAITING for it to fail?

Perhaps you're even outright EXPECTING it to fail, because you know in your heart-of-hearts that even though the plan or the program itself might be different....

...you know deep down that YOU haven't changed -- that you haven't gotten your mind, your head, your brain, and your heart aligned in a way that WOULD cause things to be different?

Don’t worry, you are SO not alone. This is one of the most common struggles that women have today when it comes to their relationships with food, their bodies, and themselves.

In this week’s episode of Outweigh we are going to get you clear on exactly why this happens (why you lose trust in yourself or in the possibility that it will ever get any better), and how you can finally shift this for good.

Is Social Media HELPING or HARMING Your Self Esteem? (And Your Relationship with Food and Your Body) (Outweigh) May 06, 2023
    Show notes

OUTWEIGH: I believe that I can tell a lot about a woman's emotional health based on how much time she spends on social media. I know that might sound a little bit weird, but social media has a bigger impact on your mind, brain, self-esteem, and self-image than you might think.

And THAT is the elephant in the room that I bring up on today’s podcast: Facebook and Instagram and other forms of social media (if you allow it) can be used as powerful tools to connect, share parts of your life, and keep your finger on the pulse of the lives of people that matter to you. But if you're not careful, they can easily become a weapon of comparison-itus, unattainable standards, isolation, and loneliness.

On top of that though, for people out there that ALREADY struggle with self-esteem, body image, or self-worth, I believe it can be even MORE dangerous. And that’s why I felt called to simply have a conversation about it and take a look at how it is TRULY impacting us.

In this episode of Outweigh, I teach you some valuable distinctions that will help you discover if you are the one influencing it, or if it is the one controlling you. I even give you an action plan on how you can take back ownership of your Social Brain and how to ensure that you have a healthy ‘relationship’ with social media.

Why Your Brain THINKS It Wants Sugar (Outweigh) Apr 29, 2023
    Show notes

OUTWEIGH: Do you struggle with binge eating, mindless eating, stress eating, or overeating in general?

Does it ever feel like food or sugar has a magnetic pull over you when you’re bored, sad, lonely, or stressed?

Have you ever wondered: “Am I addicted to sugar?”

If you’ve ever felt out-of-control when it comes to food and sugar, then this episode is for you!

    We will cover:

    • How you’re not really weak-willed, a self-sabotager, or a sugar addict – even if you THINK you are.
    • Why and how your brain got ‘fired and wired’ to reach for sugar, and what your brain is REALLY telling you.
    • How to relinquish the shame that comes alongside this (often shame-filled) topic.

    All that and more…

Body Image Is About Your Brain (Not Your Body) (Outweigh) Apr 22, 2023
    Show notes

OUTWEIGH: Amy’s guest for the next 3 weeks is Crystal Lunenschloss (MS, RDN, LDN, CEDRD). Crystal became a Certified Eating Disorder Registered Dietitian to help people reconnect and heal their relationship with food and their bodies. In this episode, Crystal helps us understand how body image is more about our brains than what we look like and she gives us a few things we can do to immediately combat negative body image thoughts, so our brain can rewire to a more neutral/positive state! They also talk about how eating disorder behaviors are just as common in men as they are in women.

Exercise is a Good Thing, Right? Right—and Wrong! (Outweigh) Apr 15, 2023
    Show notes

OUTWEIGH: Exercise is a well-known way to get endorphins. That was made clear to a lot of us back in 2001 when Reese Witherspoon, playing Ell Woods, gave us this classic line in Legally Blonde: “Exercise gives you endorphins. Endorphins make you happy. Happy people just don't shoot their husbands. They just don't.”

However, exercise it's not the ONLY way to release endorphins. When Amy first started true recovery 3 years ago…she had to put a halt to a lot of her working out because she didn't really know how to enjoy it and do it for the good of her body. Her reasons for working out were going through her eating disorder filter. For example: She would exercise more after eating a lot or missing a workout and she ran a lot even though she truly didn’t like running.

In recovery, Amy had to build a new filter for herself when it came to exercise, so she had to halt almost all workouts (sans hiking & walking!!) for a while to recalibrate. Maybe you are in a place where you need to press pause on working out so that you can reset and work on a new filter. In this episode, Amy shares several ways you can still release endorphins (and keep your body full of feel-good chemicals) without working out!

Change the Channel on Food Guilt (Outweigh) Apr 08, 2023
    Show notes

OUTWEIGH: How many times have you felt guilty before or after you ate something? Saying things to yourself like: "I shouldn't have..." or "Should I compensate after eating this...” That inner voice that beats us up before we eat and makes us feel guilty afterward is our worst enemy. Amy shares some ways to calm yourself down when food guilt pops up and stresses you out:

    - Something easy that you can do anytime, anywhere......is 4 rounds of the 4, 7, 8 deep breathing technique
    - Put on your favorite song….and sing along!!!!
    - Take a cold shower!!!
    - Practice the 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 grounding technique! Acknowledge 5 things you see in your surroundings; 4 things you can tough, 3 things you can hear, 2 things you can smell and finally 1 thing you can taste.
    - Find a quiet place to try this calming yoga pose, the legs up the wall pose! Lie down on the floor and let your straight legs rest against the wall. Your butt should be up against the wall so that your body is at a 90 degree angle. If you're able, stay in this position for a full 20 minutes to really let your body reset.

    • Self Acceptance
    • Self Care
    • Self Esteem
    • Self Worth
    • Self Endorsement

Amy shares some questions that she got from Leanne that you can ask yourself surrounding all 5 of these ingredients that make up how you see yourself! Answering the questions will help you understand what kind of goggles you have on because "what you see is who you be", and you are worthy of being the BEST version of yourself possible. The great news is....you can get a NEW pair of goggles if need to...you can rewire your brain!
