108: Diane Darling—Not Good At Networking? You Soon Will Be! Nov 19, 2018
    Show notes

Listen now as Diane Darling teaches us how to communicate clearly and connect easily!

Diane Darling is just darling. What a wonderful podcast conversation we had. Diane is a pioneer in social networking, and as she tells her story, you'll realize how ironic life can be. To overcome her fear of public speaking, she took acting and stand-up comedy classes. That out-of-the-box mindset and courage to defy the odds transformed her into the successful person she is today. Are you waiting to become the person you want to be? Listen in and start your own journey now!

Networking is key to your professional and personal success

Back in 2003, McGraw-Hill commissioned Diane to write the definitive book on networking: "The Networking Survival Guide." Just 90 days after the book hit the shelves, it went into a 2nd printing. Rather amazing.

Collectively, Diane's books have been translated into 7 languages. She has taught at Harvard Business School, 20th Century Fox, Cisco Systems, and so many other clients.

In our podcast, Diane tells you her tips for successfully networking. How do you, like Diane, walk through an airport and meet famous people standing in line, just like you, waiting to board a plane? As she tells us, she turned around and her bag hit this short woman. Who was she? Dr. Ruth! So, what did Diane do? Apologized and asked if she could interview her.

Diane tells another story about network development for physicians. She was at a conference and was talking to one doctor while watching another one standing over on the side. She escorted the doctor she was speaking with over to the one who was by himself and introduced herself. Next thing you know, they were all talking and sharing experiences and ideas.

Then there is the story about how Diane sat down on a plane and introduced herself to a stranger. She told the person: "I am not going to talk to you the entire trip, but let's introduce ourselves and get to know each other before we take off." A nice conversation began and then concluded so that each one could get to their work or reading or movie watching—all with a little networking to begin the flight.

Believe me, you will enjoy every minute of this talk.

107: Alex Vorobieff—How To Replace Chaos With Clarity By Realigning Your Business Nov 12, 2018
    Show notes

Listen now as Alex Vorobieff explains how to get unstuck and move your organization forward!

Ever wonder why companies tend to become more frustrating over time for everyone? Are you overwhelmed by all the concepts and books out there to improve your company? Want to know which ones will actually work and generate a return on your time and money? You're not alone. In this wonderful podcast with Alex Vorobieff, founder of the magazine and podcast Confident ROI and author of "Transform Your Company," we focus on business improvement tools and how they help business leaders achieve the bottom line results they are looking for.

Owning a business is supposed to give you the freedom to live life on your own terms, but instead, many business owners find themselves dreading Monday mornings. They feel stuck in a circle of frustration, stemming from unproductive meetings, email hell and too much time spent fighting fires.

That's where Alex can help. In his book, magazine and podcast, he shares real life stories and examples of business leaders who zero in on what concepts have and haven't worked for them so you can save time and money in your own business.

He also distills the lessons he's learned during his two decades coaching and consulting with frustrated business owners, bringing clarity to chaos for companies in a wide array of industries, including aerospace manufacturing, hospitality, healthcare, real estate development, clothing retail and food product innovation, among others. This is something at SAMC we get completely, because it echoes many of the ways we help entrepreneurs grow something innovative that opens a new market space and tackles the unmet needs of people and businesses.

We discussed many of his ideas and methods. Here are some of the highlights:

    • Business Alignment Tools: A 5-tiered approach to getting unstuck and moving your organization forward
    • If We Don't Row, We Don't Go: How to get your team working toward the same vision as you keep them motivated and coordinate actions company-wide to achieve desired outcomes.
    • Find Your Personal Starting Line and Replace Chaos with Clarity: Relief for frustrated business owners, team members and their spouses.
    • The 3 Ways for Business Owners to Exit the Circle of Frustration (death, luck or ...).

    A little background on Alex

After working two decades as a "clean-up CFO" and management consultant empowering business owners to replace chaos with clarity, Alex decided to start his own business, The Vorobieff Company, a premier business-consulting organization.

A highly sought-after speaker and business alignment coach, Alex has helped scores of successful companies eliminate the real source of their frustration using his proprietary business alignment tools.

106: Sam Radocchia—Ready To Trust Blockchain With Everything From Your Food To Your Taxes? Nov 08, 2018
    Show notes

Listen now as Sam Radocchia talks about the great things blockchain is capable of!

Sam (Samantha) Radocchia and I are both big fans of the new technologies that are emerging, particularly blockchain, the Internet of Things and Artificial Intelligence. In our podcast, we dig deeply into how these influential innovations are taking hold far more quickly than observers had anticipated. Why? Because individually and combined, they are major transformations of how we do things today. Feeling left behind? No need! Listen in and you'll quickly be in the loop.

Want to able to trust your food's history? Trust blockchain.

Sam became interested in blockchain as a means to facilitate trusted interoperability, a challenge she had to overcome while developing her own companies. With WalMart now demanding that their meat and produce providers use blockchain to track and trace the food supply, and Wyoming beef producers relying on blockchain to ensure you are getting the grass-fed beef you are expecting, blockchain is moving from the someday into the everyday world we now live in.

Why is blockchain so disruptive and scary to people?

People don't really know how their banking system works or how their taxes get paid. But they do know when their data has been stolen or their credit cards have been hacked. They don't quite understand how the blockchain system works either. What would help is a simpler way to explain how this new futuristic system will replace old ones that are neither secure nor dependable.

Sounds to me like a Blue Ocean® opportunity!

Sam thought so too. That's why in 2014, she co-founded Chronicled, an enterprise software company that leverages blockchain, IoT and peer to peer messaging technology to deliver smart supply chain solutions without revealing private data.

As Sam explains in our podcast conversation, she has always been fascinated with technology and its impact on our society and culture. Blockchain's proposition is that of decentralized trust. For this to happen, we have to totally rethink our current economic systems, socio-political structures, norms and mores. This metamorphosis is both exhilarating and terrifying to existing systems. As a culture change expert, this makes a lot of sense to me. Clearly, a lot of people's resistance to blockchain is their resistance to change itself.

Sam says: "I want to see blockchain used for the better, not just for profit."

With blockchain, Sam says, we can eliminate counterfeit drugs killing people. We can eliminate fraud, and track and trace our food supply. We can develop ways to ensure our health records are accurate and easily available to those we want to share them with. Diamonds can be tagged. Poultry and eggs can be marked and tracked. Even your tax returns can be paid on your blockchain system. Behold the future!

    A little more about Sam

As well as being the Co-Founder and Chief Marketing Officer of Chronicled, Sam is a Co-Founder of Better Kinds, a global blockchain-based network that allows consumers to scan a product with a mobile app and validate anything from its origin to its ingredients. Better Kinds also enables purchasers to measure and score a company's or product's social impact and sustainability performance before they buy.

Recently named to the Forbes 30 Under 30 List, Sam is also the founder of Machine Elf Consulting, an emerging technology and product development consulting firm focusing on blockchain, IoT and manufacturing advisement to enterprises.

On the personal side, Sam is an avid risk taker, acquiring her pilot's license at the age of 17 and accumulating over 700 jumps as a competitive skydiver.

105: Steve Smith—What Emerging Leaders Need To Be Effective In Today's Workplace Nov 05, 2018
    Show notes

Listen now as Steve Smith talks about how leaders must adapt to changing times!

Have you noticed? Leadership is changing—a lot—which is causing emerging leaders to wonder what skills they'll need to be effective in today's culturally diverse, technologically supercharged workplace. If you're wondering too, you'll love today's podcast with Steve Smith, President and Founder of GrowthSource Coaching. Steve and I speak about the shift from a hierarchical, top-down leadership style to a more collaborative, team-building, results-focused one. Don't miss it!

Everything's changing...the culture, the workplace, how different generations approach tasks...everything

Partly coming from the shifting of generations, partly from new ways of getting work done—from partially to totally virtual, and from locally to globally—the boss-employee relationship is going through a massive transformation.

As today's guest Steve Smith describes it, "The challenge is in getting things done with a different model for how to talk to people, how you guide them, how you demand accountability and how you build an environment where they feel they should deliver on time and to budget. These are strong values. At times today, they are missing. It takes the right leader to craft the right visualization for his or her team and get employees to embrace this vision to move ahead, together."

What will future leaders need to be more effective?

As so many leaders today are discovering, new technology is transforming the workplace, but it's not the technology that has to be managed, it's the workplace and the people within it. How people interact with customers is changing, too, as consumers are expecting results faster and cheaper with more flexibility and quality. There is a new conversation that is needed now, focusing more on why we are doing something and less on the task to be done.

Leveraging the new to improve upon the old

During our conversation, Steve emphasized the importance of showing respect for the old while moving beyond it. As a corporate anthropologist, I quite agree. Transforming an organization by introducing AI, bots to do audits or chatbots to perform customer service is going to be the crux of the leadership challenge. Do your people know how to navigate this new world?

And what do most leaders rely on that does not work well anymore? Their position of power. As we say all the time at SAMC, time to change.

    Some background on Steve

Steve Smith is President and Founder of GrowthSource Coaching in Orange County, CA, which provides leadership, management and marketing coaching to business owners, executives and entrepreneurs worldwide. Named a Catalyst for Change by the California Business Journal, Steve has helped over 400 business professionals to date.

An author, speaker and podcaster, Steve speaks to business groups, trade associations and local companies about their thinking and behaviors that produce top-tier performance. He launched his fourth internet radio podcast show, "Business Wingmen," in December 2017.

104: Oscar Barrera— Creatively Applying Anthropology To Find Innovative Solutions Oct 29, 2018
    Show notes

Listen now as Oscar Barrera teaches us to "see reality" as anthropologists do!

Oscar Barerra has a great story to share and a lot of lessons for all of us to learn. As with many of us, Oscar was not really sure what type of career he wanted to pursue. He did know that he had a knack for seeing things with fresh eyes and turning his ideas into insights for business executives. From rural Mexican highlands to urban shopping malls, Oscar has worked in a variety of industries, all the while helping business leaders better adapt to new technologies. Listen in!

    Oscar's fascinating story

Born in Mexico City, Oscar Barrera is a passionate Ph.D. anthropologist who never thought of becoming one. His journey started when he met anthropologists in the Chiapas Highlands of Mexico after finishing his coursework for his bachelor's degree in Tourism Studies. Fascinated by the unique ways anthropologists understand and see things, Oscar decided to become one in order to "see reality" as anthropologists do.

Having worked in 24 countries around the world, Oscar is currently CEO of his own business, Appamada Consulting, which is devoted to helping businesses change, grow and innovate using anthropological tools and methods.

Today, Oscar's anthropological work spans many industries. He has consulted with coffee farmers in the highlands of Mexico to help them better adapt to new technologies and farming methods being implemented by the farms' owners. He has also worked in shopping malls to help business owners better engage with employees.

Whatever the setting, Oscar loves finding new opportunities to creatively apply anthropological methods to challenging situations demanding innovative solutions, in Mexico and the U.S. He is based in the city of Veracruz, located on the Gulf of Mexico Coast in eastern Mexico.

In our podcast, Oscar and I discuss a wide range of topics including:

    1. The great potential of anthropology to change the way we see and do things in the business world.
    2. How anthropology can bring change in the culture of organizations (case studies: a mall in Veracruz and a coffee export company)
    3. The way anthropology can add value to customers by understanding them (case studies: a car wash business and a memorial service company)

103: Cynthia Forstmann—How Can Archetypes Help You Achieve Your Goals? Oct 22, 2018
    Show notes

Listen now as Cynthia Forstmann enlightens us about the fascinating role archetypes play in business!

Did you know that all people typically fall into one of twelve major archetypes? And that you might have a dominant archetype and a subdominant one and even a shadow archetype? Why does that matter? Listen to my interview with Cynthia Forstmann, co-founder and president of CultureTalk. What you will hear is a woman who has a passion for storytelling. She is also devoted to helping people understand their archetypes and what they mean for themselves, their relationships and their businesses. I was fascinated by what I learned—you will be too!

What our archetypes reveal about us

As an archetypal explorer, Cynthia works with individuals to uncover and connect the hidden symbols, patterns and passions that give meaning to their lives and work. As a founding partner of CultureTalk, she helps organizations design cultures, brands and communications programs that are driven from a place of authenticity and deep awareness.

A background in psychology led to Cynthia's fascination with Carl Jung's archetypes in organizational culture and brands. She studied with Jungian researcher Carol Pearson, Ph.D., then created the framework for CultureTalk's archetypal tools, training and engagements.

    More about Cynthia

Cynthia facilitates strategic focus groups with executives, boards, marketing and HR directors, and other business leaders who share a stake in the culture and communications of any group. She has led award-winning re-branding projects and designed strategic communication and team-building programs to recruit, retain and engage top talent.

Cynthia played a key role in architecting the CultureTalk System, a collection of culture and personality assessments, workshops and engagements which offers a practical process for addressing complex business challenges and creating transformative change. Paired with

individual personality assessments, the system helps organizations recruit and develop leaders and strengthen team dynamics. She is also a co-founder of Allegory, a brand and communications firm that served as a proving ground for archetypes for over 20 years.

Known for her warmth and humor, Cynthia speaks to diverse audiences about the future of work and the power of story in creating culture, inspiring purpose and enhancing fulfillment. She holds a B.A. in Psychology from Villanova University, as well as a Masters in Positive Psychology and Certificate in Instructional Design from Marymount University.

    Briefly, what is an archetype?

In the early 1900s, Carl Jung, a Swiss psychiatrist and psychoanalyst who founded analytical psychology (and a one-time colleague of Sigmund Freud), developed a theory he called archetypes, which are highly-developed elements of the collective unconscious. Archetypes, or personality types, emerged as humans evolved, Jung theorized. The human mind, particularly the ancient, reptilian portion of the brain, has had innate characteristics "imprinted" upon it as it has developed over millions of years. Archetypes, according to Jung, are images and thoughts which have universal meanings across cultures which may show up in dreams, literature, art or religion. These deep-seated patterns are the gateways between the conscious and sub-conscious mind.

    How to discover your archetype!

Cynthia's company, CultureTalk, has a methodology for you to assess your own archetypes and better understand who you are and how you relate to others. You can try the free quiz here. Are you a "Hero" or a "Magician?" Maybe you are a "Ruler" or an "Innocent?" Find out!

At SAMC, we have been using this archetype methodology with our clients, and they are fascinated by who they are and what they do.

Let us know what you find and how you might use your archetype(s) for your business, your relationships and even your family. Contact us, we'd love to talk archetypes with you.

    Show notes

Listen now as Deepa Prahalad shows us how to solve complex problems innovatively!

We had the pleasure of meeting Deepa Prahalad through a chance meeting in Healdsburg, CA. Were we lucky! Not only is Deepa an internationally acclaimed consultant, innovation leader and design strategist, she co-authored the book "Predictable Magic: Unleash the Power of Design Strategy to Transform your Business," acclaimed by Fast Company in 2010 as one of the Best Design Books of the Year. Deepa really understands something that is very important to us—namely, how to convert observation into innovations. Design strategy is just that: a way to see things with fresh eyes. Now you understand why Deepa is right up our ally. Take a listen!

A thinker, a strategist and a global citizen

Ranked #34 on the Thinkers50 India list, Deepa is part of Marshall Goldsmith's legacy project 100 Coaches, and is certified in Goldsmith's Stakeholder Centered Coaching.

In today's podcast, Deepa shares with us how she has developed her unique approaches to design and then applied them in all types of different contexts. Having worked with leading companies, business schools and conferences around the world, she is passionate about helping communities in emerging markets solve complex problems innovatively.

Like her father, CK Prahalad, Deepa is very concerned with how to provide food and services to society's poorest people through innovative solutions, not just charitable contributions.

After hearing our conversation, you will be inspired to think beyond the job of today or your business as it is now. You will have learned how to see, feel and think in new ways, so you can then actually "do" those new ideas with impact and effectiveness.

    101: Kay Sargent—The Impact of Design On Today's Next-Gen Workforce Oct 15, 2018
    Show notes

Listen now as Kay Sargent talks about how workspace design greatly impacts profitability!

Work is what people do—not a place they go. And yet, as you will hear in my podcast with Kay Sargent, the place where people go to do their work has an enormous impact on the quality and quantity of the work they produce there. A recognized expert on workplace design, Kay works with businesses to design and build the right workspace for a fast-changing workforce who have no use for "business as usual." Sounds challenging? You bet it is. Hear how she does it so well.

What is the workforce of the future? And how does that impact workplace design?

How do companies determine what the right workspace solution for them should be? For starters, they call Kay Sargent. Based in Washington, D.C., Kay solves clients' business and organizational challenges related to strategic planning, workplace strategy and change management.

During our conversation, Kay shared with me how challenging it is to create optimal workplaces for today's constantly evolving workforce. With all the different changes taking place in the generations, the demand for gender and ethnic balance, and the integration of virtual workers, it's hard to strike a balance that meets everyone's workplace needs.

Most interesting, Kay said, is how difficult it is for people to visualize something different from what they are doing today—which fits into our "change is pain" mindset that we at SAMC talk about so often. Like us, she also uses the OCAI to better understand the culture of a client, because that culture hugely influences how they want their workspace to work for them. Should it be more collaborative or creative? Hierarchical or a playground? It all depends on the culture.

    Some background on Kay

With more than 30 years' experience, Kay has worked with several Fortune 500 companies to optimize their global real estate portfolios and create innovative work environments. As director of HOK's WorkPlace team, a practice that supports organizations undertaking multiple projects in various locations, Kay is responsible for helping clients redefine how, when and where their people work, operating in tandem to support a holistic design approach that integrates an organization's people, processes and technology.

She has authored multiple white papers and articles on well-being, next-gen workforce, technology's impact on the workplace, space fusion and the rise of the human factor.

Kay speaks regularly at CoreNet, IFMA and other global industry events. She has been honored with the "Luminary Award" from CoreNet Global five times for being one of its top-rated speakers, and was also rated the "Top Rated Presenter" at Tradeline's 2015 Space Strategies conference.

You can reach Kay at kay.sargent@hok.com.

During our podcast, Kay and I discuss:

    • Why creating a functional, positive space for the workforce of the future is so important for functionality and profitability
    • Creating spaces that accommodate each person by accounting for every factor of their being
    • The importance of knowing who your workers are now and who they will be in the future so you can create a workplace that is collaborative, comfortable and valued

Blue Zones are various places around the world where people seem to have some sort of "magic" and live much longer than people elsewhere. Dan Buettner identified five geographic areas where people live statistically longest: Okinawa, Japan; Sardinia, Italy; Nicoya, Costa Rica; Icaria, Greece and the Seventh-day Adventists in Loma Linda, California. Based on empirical data and first-hand observations, the secret to these populations living healthier and longer lives involves a perfect combination of healthy lifestyle, exercise, good fresh food and community. And that's what Dan Miller is all about!

    Some background on Dan Miller

Dan is an entrepreneur, speaker, martial artist, scuba diver, ultra-runner, mentor, business owner, author, husband and father of two boys. His career started when his father died at a young age from something he could have avoided—smoking. What happened to Dan next was transformative. He realized that much of our lives can be lived in a healthy manner. While we may have a genetic platform to build upon, a great deal of our health is influenced by what we do, how we eat and sleep, how we work out and the kinds of relationships we have with others.

Dan came to me through the Vistage Speaker network. An internationally-renowned nutrition and fitness expert, Dan develops health and wellness programs for people from all walks of life. From the business leader to the physician, from the professional fighter to a family with a child with cancer, Dan's expertise is shifting a discussion of dieting to one of vibrant longevity without disease or disorder.

Dan has presented his healthy living and longevity strategies to numerous executives worldwide, helping them live longer and healthier lives, reduce healthcare costs, and achieve greater personal and workplace productivity. His engaging, interactive style has inspired thousands to achieve permanent, life-changing results.

As a Certified Nutrition Coach through the International Board of Nutrition & Fitness Coaching, Dan is a member of the Venice Nutrition Coaches Network. His nutrition programs, based on blood-sugar stabilization and macro-nutrient balance, are designed to permanently end dieting.

In addition to being a world leader in nutrition and fitness, Dan is a 30-year veteran of the martial arts. He has practiced, coached and studied a number of disciplines, including Jiu Jitsu, Krav Maga and Tae Kwon Do. He is also a former Guinness World Endurance Record holder for a 48-hour treadmill marathon event.

Holding Master's degrees in Business Administration, Strategic Leadership and Project Management, Dan's education transcends nutrition, enabling him to identify with the challenges faced by today's busy executives.
