127: Jennifer Dawn—Finding Your Way In Business and Life Apr 01, 2019
    Show notes

Jennifer Dawn helps you find your calling and your purpose!

We present Jennifer Dawn to you because of how her clients brag about her: "Jennifer helped me to rock out my first Tame Your Mind Event with stellar results. She guided me through the process of creating a rock-solid marketing plan, tapping into my local media, and meeting my sales goals each week which produced a SOLD OUT event...the experience was PHENOMENAL!" Perhaps she has some magic we want to share with our listeners too. Listen and hear the joy!

Jennifer is a serial entrepreneur, business coach, accomplished speaker and published author. She has built two multi-million dollar businesses, Jennifer Dawn Coaching and Best Planner Ever, and is now working on her third. Helping high-achieving entrepreneurs achieve extraordinary results through coaching sessions and 2-Day Deep Dive Intensives, Jennifer is a master at setting and achieving goals, problem solving, and cash flow.

We love the fact that Jennifer is, like us, an entrepreneur at heart. That's why I want to share her story here. You can hear it in the podcast, but the narrative captures the energy and journey of an entrepreneur's adventure so well that you have to read it.

    Jennifer's story

Jennifer began her entrepreneurial career selling apples off her grandfather's tree because a lemonade stand was so "yesterday." She went on to launch a cake decorating business in high school, then worked for the Governor of Florida and IBM in her early 20's.

Always wanting to improve and do things her way, Jennifer founded her first software company at age 23 which developed point-of-sale systems for amusement parks. She traveled the world while growing the business from nothing to over $1M in annual sales.

After 13 years, she sold the company and purchased another business—a construction company. It sounded awesome, but her timing was bad. That same year, the industry crashed along with her business. However, as we all know, the best entrepreneurs have all failed—it's the getting back up that makes you great.

Next, Jennifer accepted a position as the Software Division President for a $54M manufacturing firm and in two short years, grew sales from $300K to $2.2M. The pay was great. The benefits were great. But, the company's ethics left much to be desired and after a few years, Jennifer realized that her kids knew the nanny better than her. Not okay.

So, she pivoted, and was soon leading and mentoring high-level Accountability and Mastermind groups for an international network of women entrepreneurs. It was then that she realized she had made millions for her own company and for corporations, so why not help others do the same? That's how she found her ultimate passion and purpose—a love for coaching.

Today, Jennifer helps entrepreneurs grow exceptional businesses using heart-centered principles to guide them in building financially solid companies that are a joy to own.

How about you? Are you going to work every day with joy?

Have you found your calling? Your purpose? Perhaps Jennifer's insights can inspire you to step back and really think about what you are doing now and what you could do to make a difference in this life of yours, and the one you share with others.

Enjoy the conversation. Enjoy your journey!

126: Lihi Segal—Get Healthy And Avoid Disease With Personalized Nutrition Mar 25, 2019
    Show notes

Lihi Segal explains how microbiomes are the key to health!

I first heard about heard Lihi Segal in a TED Talk about how our diets are unique to our bodies. It was so interesting. It's not about how much we eat, it's the precise mix of foods we consume. I reached out to Lihi and DayTwo, her research company that's developing this new approach, to see if they would share with us their research findings and what it might mean for each of us. The implications of this new understanding of nutrition are enormous. What if we all could be healthier and avoid disease if we better understood what's good and bad for our individual bodies? This is big. Listen in, learn and share this conversation! It could change your life.

Perhaps it is time to think about not A DIET but YOUR DIET

Lihi Segal is CEO and co-founder of DayTwo, a leader in the development of microbiome-based precision medicine, focusing on metabolic disease. For those of us who don't know, your gut microbiome is the collection of all the microbes (around 100 trillion) that exist in your digestive tract and help you digest food. Your microbiome is unique to you, and influences the way your body reacts to different foods.

    A new frontier in medicine

A study conducted in 2015 at the Weizmann Institute of Science in Israel and published in Cell was the catalyst that got Lihi into the field of personalized, microbiome-based diet solutions. The study, which for one week continuously monitored blood sugar levels in over a thousand people, revealed that the bodily response to foods was highly individual.

Called the Personalized Nutrition Project, the study was led by Professors Eran Segal of the Computer Science and Applied Mathematics Department and Eran Elinav of the Immunology Department. They decided to look at why diets fail and why one person can eat, say, bread and another person can't.

Segal and Elinav decided that perhaps the whole approach is wrong and instead of looking at the food, we need to look at the person. This led them to develop an algorithm that collects a person's health data and then predicts which foods and meals would be good for them and which would be bad, with "good" being a meal that doesn't spike blood sugar levels after eating it.

Prof. Segal said: "We chose to focus on blood sugar because elevated levels are a major risk factor for diabetes, obesity and metabolic syndrome. The huge differences in the rise of blood sugar levels among different people who consumed identical meals highlights why personalized eating choices are more likely than universal dietary advice to help people stay healthy."

It's all about your gut microbiome

What caught Lihi's attention was the ability of Segal and Elinav's technology to customize low blood sugar level diets for each individual, something very new in the nutrition realm, so her company licensed it. If she could help people avoid disease, and death, Lihi was in.

Researchers at DayTwo then built a mathematical predictive model app that tells you how your blood sugar is going to respond to any meal you eat. Based on that model, they now can create customized diets for their clients so they can successfully avoid high blood sugar levels that cause energy dips, excessive hunger, weight gain and increased risk of obesity and diabetes. As part of their program, they also provide suggested meals, snacks and the services of a dietician.

Along these same lines, recent research has shown that your genetic background is not as influential in your microbiome as you might have thought. It is less genetics than a reflection of the people you live with, the foods, drugs and drinks you consume, and your lifestyle. That's why DayTwo's assessment methodology is so innovative—it helps you identify the right diet for your personal "gut."

Think about the implications of this approach

Your health to a very large extent stems from how your body processes food. The trillions of bacteria that live in your gut, which differ greatly from person to person, are part of how you uniquely respond to food. Different people have different blood sugar responses to the same foods, which is why it is essential to understand what your particular body needs—and to eat accordingly.

Wanting to bring this groundbreaking technology from Isreal to the U.S., Lihi and DayTwo helped the Mayo Clinic replicate the Weizmann Institute trial which got the same results. Heidi Nelson, M.D., director of the Mayo Clinic Center for Individualized Medicine Microbiome Program, explains:

"We have long wondered why one diet works for one person, but not another. Now, we are beginning to understand that how a person processes food depends upon that individual's gut microbiome, immune system and the community of bacteria in the gut. Given these multiple factors, we are exploring ways to develop customized diets that will maintain wellness and prevent the development of disease."

Nelson adds: "Glucose levels are abnormally high in patients with diabetes, and traditional interventions to control glucose levels have had limited benefit for them. These study results highlight the important role that personalized diets can play in maintaining better control over blood glucose levels and overall health."

How do you get started with DayTwo?

As Lihi tells us in the podcast, just go to DayTwo's website and order your home testing kit online, which contains everything you need. In addition, over 200 clinics in the U.S. have signed up with her program. Better health is actually attainable for all of us.

    Some background on Lihi

Lihi Segal has over 20 years of experience leading business and financial operations, spanning Interoperability and Health Information Exchange (HIE), Population Management, Electronic Health Records and Analytics. Before launching DayTwo, Lihi was COO and CFO of Sisense, a leading provider of business intelligence and analytics software, and CFO of dbMotion Ltd. where she was instrumental in growing the company up until its acquisition by Allscripts Healthcare, a leading U.S. EMR company. Prior to that, Lihi held senior roles in a number of businesses, from startups to large public enterprises. She is also a lawyer with an LLB from Tel-Aviv University and an MBA from Northwestern University.

124: Michael Alan Tate—How A Strategic Plan Can Get You Where You Want To Go Mar 18, 2019
    Show notes

Michael Alan Tate explains how to create successful career move strategies!

I had a wonderful podcast interview with Michael Alan Tate. You will enjoy listening to him, too. What was of such interest? The challenges of change, of course, something that we at SAMC spend a lot of time working on with clients. Michael has been an executive consultant and career coach for more than 20 years. He is also the founder and president of On the Same Page Consulting, as well as an inspiring speaker and author. His first book, "Design a Life that Works," teaches how to balance business, career, family and personal values in an individual strategic life plan. His latest book, "The White Shirt," gives you the tools to create successful career move strategies. This is one podcast you shouldn't miss—we can all learn so much from Michael!

    Expertise in career transitions

Michael came into his own after realizing that he was miserable doing outplacement services for a company that was downsizing. Determined to make a change, he drew up his own personal plan, pitched it to his boss and created a new job. No longer was he helping people move out, but rather, helping them grow into stronger performers—where they were and where they were going in their own lives.

Now president and CEO of On the Same Page Consulting, Michael works with successful executives, entrepreneurs and technical professionals who are seeking a simple action-focused plan to effectively manage career transitions, keep teams on the same page, and prepare for positive leadership succession.

    Some background on Michael

With over 20 years' experience as an executive coach, consultant and strategist, Michael knows that successful people want to navigate the murky waters of career transition as quickly and effectively as possible. Drawing on his own experience, he developed a unique consulting strategy in which he helps each of his clients create a powerful and succinct strategic plan, incorporating prioritized actions.

In his latest book, "The White Shirt," Mike speaks not only to those facing career transitions but also to their loved ones (spouses, partners, parents, children, siblings, friends) who can and should be involved in the process of designing a career plan. Whether graduating from college, struggling to find a job, re-entering the workforce, changing careers or preparing for retirement, Michael shows us how to successfully navigate a transition while maintaining a healthy, happy, balanced life.

Listen in and enjoy the journey. Michael and I certainly did. Afterward, he said, "Wow, that was my favorite podcast!" It was certainly one of mine.

125: Jared Tate—Powerfully Disrupting Currency With DigiByte Blockchain Mar 14, 2019
    Show notes

Jared Tate shares how blockchain is where the future's going!

You might just be a real fan of Jared Tate. So many in the DigiByte (DGB) world are. Jared founded DigiBYte in 2013, then the next year, launched DGB's genesis block to create a better cryptocurrency. Recognizing that blockchain is the wave of the future (or more accurately, the tsunami), disrupting all kinds of markets and creating new ones, we did a podcast with Jared in June 2018. So much has happened since then that we did another one just now, and Jared was terrific, again. Clearly, blockchain and cryptocurrency are two phenomena you should be watching carefully, and listening to our podcast with Jared is an important step in that direction.

Worried that blockchain is going to disrupt currency as we know it today? It might.

It was his curiosity about bitcoin that led Jared Tate to create DigiByte, a public, rapidly growing and highly decentralized blockchain. He knew he could create a better, faster, more secure system for crypto-technology, and he was right.

Today, DigiByte is the world's longest, fastest and most secure UTXO blockchain in existence, with DGB blocks occurring on the network every 15 seconds. It is faster, more scalable and safer than other digital cash options such as Bitcoin and Litecoin, and has a community of 100,000 nodes globally. (For a primer on cryptocurrency and DigiByte, click here.)

Want to watch our conversation while you listen? Click on the image below.

What did we talk about in this podcast and video? Where the DigiByte world is going, fast.

    • Huge numbers of DigiBytes are being mined, with over 11 billion in circulation now.
    • What is being done to improve security, in part by making the entire platform as decentralized as possible.
    • How DigiByte has created amazing speed in its system, far faster (40x) than Bitcoin.
    • The power of the DigiByte community. There is little structure or staff supporting Jared directly. Rather, in true decentralized fashion (like DigiByte itself), he has left promotion and development up to the community. While coordination is at times challenging, DigiByte has grown amazingly well through collaboration.

Focused on building blockchain options, public outreach and the DigiByte Foundation

DigiByte is literally "on the brink" of taking off as a leader, building faster, scalable and more secure cryptocurrency, or remaining remote and obscure. As entrepreneurs ourselves, it is our pleasure to help Jared tell his story to more people in more ways in support of his vision and to get greater adoption.

What DigiByte and blockchain can bring to our lives is truly exciting. Jump on the train with us!

121: Jill Johnson—Small Business Guru and Business Plan Expert Mar 12, 2019
    Show notes

Jill Johnson is helping women of color entrepreneurs succeed!

Today, in 2019, 40% of the businesses in the U.S. are owned by women. In this podcast, Jill Johnson and I discuss the challenges faced by women of color in starting a business, finding the capital to underwrite its growth, and developing the business acumen to successfully take their ideas and turn them into brilliant innovations. It is never easy. Listen in and learn how Jill did it!

Access to capital (or lack of access) is a legacy challenge with roots deep in our American history, especially for entrepreneurs of color.

Women of color are starting businesses at higher rates than anyone else, yet they get less capital, have fewer successful exits and produce less income for owners. While there have been innovative capital solutions in recent years, capital constraint remains a defining problem for the majority of women of color entrepreneurs. Jill talks with us today about how she is attacking this problem by sharing her expertise for creating the connections that open doors to opportunity.

In our fascinating conversation, Jill and I talk about her family of entrepreneurs who started and ran a successful newspaper business in New Jersey. But, as we know so well, the newspaper business is not a flourishing growth industry, so Jill and her father turned their attention to developing resources for entrepreneurs, particularly women entrepreneurs, so that they, too, could be successful business leaders.

As a major step in this direction, Jill co-founded the Institute for Entrepreneurial Leadership (IFEL) in 2002, then launched the IFEL Adopt-a-Business Program along with a broader initiative called Women of Color Connecting whose convening summit, January 31-February 1, 2019, helped women of color build their networks, pitch their ideas and find the support they need to thrive.

Women are becoming a major force in business:

    • As of 2018, there are 3 million women-owned businesses in the U.S., compared to only 402,000 in 1972.
    • Women now own 4 out of every 10 businesses in the U.S.
    • Since 2007, the number of women-owned businesses has increased by 58%. Overall, businesses have only increased by 12%.
    • Last year, 1,821 new women-owned businesses were launched every day, with 64% of those founded by women of color.
    • Women are slightly more likely to start a business than men, according to the SCORE report.

Now the big question facing all of us is how to help them succeed.

At SAMC, that's what we're all about—helping people become successful business leaders. That's why in early 2018, Andy and I launched The Simon Initiative for Entrepreneurship in partnership with Washington University's Skandalaris Center for Interdisciplinary Innovation and Entrepreneurship to connect entrepreneurs, particularly women, with the resources they need to launch their ventures. In addition, we've created an Ebook Primer for Entrepreneurs and a 6-Step Process for Entrepreneurs. Along with Jill, our mission is to open doors to opportunity. Stay tuned!

    Some background on Jill

Jill Johnson is the Co-founder/CEO of the Institute for Entrepreneurial Leadership (IFEL). With nearly 30 years' experience as a business strategist, she possesses expertise in financial analysis, marketing and business development. She is an advocate for community businesses and micro-enterprise and is a leading authority in the area of minority inclusion in the entrepreneurial world. She is also a highly-sought-after speaker on topics including: community economic development, business plan development, entrepreneurship, minority and women-led small business growth, and access to capital.

Jill started her career as a financial analyst at Goldman, Sachs & Co, then joined City News Publishing Company. From there, she became President of On Point Consulting, a strategic business planning consultancy, advising early-stage businesses through a variety of strategic planning and growth issues.

As CEO of the Institute for Entrepreneurial Leadership, Jill is responsible for strategic direction and capacity building, and has led the company in successfully winning contracts with the New Jersey Department of Labor, the Newark Urban Enterprise Zone and the Rutgers Center for Urban Entrepreneurship and Economic Development.

Jill is also a member of several advisory boards, including the National Center for Entrepreneurship and Innovation (NCEI) Entrepreneurship Council and the Red Tape Commission. She earned her B.A. in economics from Harvard University and is married with four amazing sons.

123: Richard Sheridan—How To Lead With Joy And Purpose! Mar 11, 2019
    Show notes

Richard Sheridan shares how to build a workplace full of joy!

A little over a year ago, in January 2018, I had the pleasure, or should I say "joy," of speaking with Richard Sheridan and several of his staff about the Joy he has infused into his business, Menlo Innovations. After leading a workshop on culture change at a conference hosted by Richard, I've grown very fond of him and his approach to life, not just business. He now has a new book out, "Chief Joy Officer," a powerful follow-up to his first book, "Joy, Inc." In his book and in our podcast, Richard shares his approach to leadership. Definitely listen, learn and share!

First, Richard built a workplace full of joy

Richard Sheridan's "Joy, Inc." tells the story of how his tiny software company in Ann Arbor, Michigan achieved success and wide renown by embracing an offbeat culture and human-centered values. If you remember from our 2018 interview, Richard's folks have no managers—they manage themselves. Team members, not HR executives, evaluate prospective employees and either endorse a hire or not.

Plus, they have Hi-Tech Anthropologists on staff who work with clients and programmers to ensure clients get what they want and programmers understand what clients really need. As corporate anthropologists, this is right in our wheelhouse, which is why we're thrilled to see companies applying the tools and methods of anthropology to solve their business needs.

Now, he wants to share with you his approach to leadership

In "Chief Joy Officer," Richard now turns his attention from business culture to business leadership, drawing on his valuable experience running Menlo Innovations and consulting for other companies. This second book is a wise, provocative guide, illuminating how anyone can build leadership capacity for joy within their own organization.

I remember well at our conference how Richard told the story of how decisions used to be made in business: ideas were sent up the chain of command and staff waited for someone to send back an answer. Far too often, it was a "no, we don't do that here." He set out to change that. And he did, joyously!

How you too can lead with joy

"Chief Joy Officer" offers sage, hard-won advice to any business leader or manager who yearns to make more of an impact on the lives of others, including these key principles:

    • Self-understanding is the cornerstone for every virtue of leadership: Authenticity, trust, humility and optimism.
    • Good leaders make more leaders: Learn to judge your performance not on whether people are doing what they're told, but whether they're developing independent leadership capacity.
    • Influencing up is just as important is influencing down: Encourage different thinking in those above you in your organization.

You'll love listening to this podcast and thinking about your own leadership style

As I work with leaders all over the country, I'm finding that their biggest challenge is separating managing tasks and inspiring leadership. Is this you too? What is it you are trying to achieve and would you love advice on how to go about it?

122: Allison De Paoli—Gaining Control Of Your Healthcare Benefits Costs Mar 04, 2019
    Show notes

Allison De Paoli explains how to contain benefit spending and care for employees!

When I was first introduced to Allison De Paoli, I wondered how you, our listeners and readers, would feel about her topic: how to control employer spending on healthcare benefits for their employees. I urge you to listen in before you judge whether this is really relevant to you. In fact, this is as much about you and your needs as it is about those of your company's CEO, employee benefits officer or budget director. Maybe you and your employer can find hidden costs that are driving benefits expenses up? I guarantee you, we can all gain from what Allison has to say.

Taking care of those who make your company run

If you are an executive worried about your rising healthcare benefits costs (often among the top three of your expenses), you must listen to this podcast and think about what you are doing.

The best employers inherently know that taking care of their employees means that their employees will take care of their company's customers. Understandably, then, the goal is to offer a benefits plan that takes care of employees but doesn't break the bank. This will produce higher job satisfaction, better morale, more employee engagement and better staff retention.

The problem is that most employers don't know how to accomplish this—or even that it is possible!

    Learn from an expert

For years, Allison De Paoli has been shocking employers who were sure that there was little they could do to control their healthcare spending. As she shares in our podcast, Allison sweeps in and helps you "see, feel and think" about your healthcare spending in completely new ways, which is why we knew she was perfect for an On the Brink with Andi Simon podcast. (Maybe she's an anthropologist like us and doesn't know it?) She gets it and so will you!

Allison's #1 goal: helping employers gain control of their healthcare spending

Specifically, this means deriving the maximum value from every dollar spent and allowing those saved dollars to grow the business and the bottom line, all while delivering a world-class benefits program to employees.

According to Allison, understanding how to drive savings while delivering top-quality benefits can be intimidating for most health insurance professionals. Few know how to get under the hood and tinker around with the components to make the plan work better. Allison does. And she's here today to tell us how.

Here are some of the things Allison and I discussed:

    • How supply chain management translates into healthcare and employee benefits
    • What to focus on with healthcare: manage the claims, not the administrative
    • How to shift your plan to focus on outcomes
    • Healthcare management: how to find hidden cost drivers
    • How to make a healthcare plan predictable and repeatable
    • How to use your plan to drive employee engagement

    Allison's advice and proposals:

    • Fee Transparency for everyone: Who gets paid what, and when. This includes your benefits advisor, hospitals, imaging centers, labs and every other component of the healthcare system supply chain.
    • Alignment of the incentives for good care: There shouldn't be competing interests between hospitals, doctors, pharmacies, all other providers of care and yes, benefits advisors.

120: Michelle Turman—How To Make The Positive Changes Needed To Keep Your Business Growing Feb 19, 2019
    Show notes

Listen now as Michelle Turman teaches us how to bring about innovative change to maintain growth!

Are you thinking about starting your own business? Maybe you're looking around the one you're in and want to run yours with better organizational skills? Are you "On the Brink" of launching a new venture that is truly a reflection of your passions? Whatever your situation, perhaps it is time to meet and learn from Michelle Turman: author, woman entrepreneur, business owner, consultant, change strategist. Michelle is a really special lady and I heartily invite you to listen in!

    Shifting from inside-out to outside-in

Michelle Turman has been a leader in the nonprofit world for much of her career. Recently, she shifted her focus from working inside organizations to launching her own entrepreneurial business, Catalyst Consulting Services, to expand her reach and more widely impact businesses in need of help with change management.

As we discuss in this podcast, Michelle wants you and your business to continue to grow and thrive in fast-changing times. Sounds familiar, I am sure! (As culture change experts, that's what we do, too.)

Her company helps organizations do just that by coming inside as a consultative outsource solution provider. Her people work with your key decision-makers to facilitate the positive changes needed to keep your nonprofit growing to the next level, whatever that might be.

Wearing many hats, all at the same time

As any business leader knows, it's hard to envision your organization's purpose, raise the funding for it, run the daily operations, hire and retain staff, maintain growth and encourage innovative thinking. But as you listen to our conversation, you will hear a range of great ideas that Michelle is providing to help you do just that. The power of the mentor is just one of them. But you will learn a great deal more.

If you like this podcast, listen to Michelle's earlier one with us in April 2018: "Achieving Your Great Success, Now."

118: Roger Nierenberg—How Music Can Transform The Way Your Organization Functions Feb 11, 2019
    Show notes

Listen now as Roger Nierenberg explains how The Music Paradigm helps you see your organization with fresh eyes!

We are delighted to have with us today Roger Nierenberg, an exceptional conductor and innovator who has taken his musical passion and skills and become a "go-to" inspiration for businesses. Through the metaphor of music, Maestro Nierenberg helps organizations "see, feel and think" about themselves with fresh eyes. Quite amazing. Very anthropological, which as you know, is right up our alley! Wait til you hear—and I mean hear—this pioneering musical genius.

A Unique Learning Experience for Any Type of Organization

What Roger Nierenberg and I discuss in this podcast is the way in which music, and the performance of music, can often be seen as a foreign culture but can also be a powerful metaphor for the organizations in which we work, or work with.

As Roger describes his experiences conducting orchestras all over the world, he shares with us how during each performance, the musicians are listening, understanding, sharing, visualizing and changing their performances, not so much in response to him but to each other.

Through Roger's descriptions, we too can see our own methods of interacting with others more clearly by watching performers collaborate in a musical experience. It isn't because they are just talented performers. Rather, they have learned how to work together to bring out each one's skills and create an amazing performance. Might this apply to your organization?

    The Music Paradigm

Through Roger's experiences engaging with community businesses and civic leaders, he became curious about the challenges and opportunities faced by organizations in times of rapid change. Again, right up our alley—at SAMC we're all about change.

He realized how crucial issues of organizational development could be powerfully brought to life within an orchestra. Thus was born The Music Paradigm, a highly effective learning experience that uses symphonic music to illuminate compelling insights about people at work. Participants are seated directly among the orchestra musicians, observing them as they perform. Up close, they see fascinating and unexpected organizational dynamics taking place within the group. It soon becomes clear that this is not a demonstration but a powerful forum where observers gain fresh understanding about the opportunities and challenges faced by their own organization.

Over the past 20 years, Roger has presented The Music Paradigm to hundreds of different organizations, from civic groups to Fortune 500 companies, in 23 different countries. He explains many of the lessons learned in his book, "Maestro: A Surprising Story About Leading by Listening," which was honored in 2009 as the Best Leadership Book from 800-CEO-READ.

Andy and I are both fans of philharmonic concerts and we find The Music Paradigm to be really quite amazing. It allows you to bring something that often is not well attended (symphony orchestra performances) into your workplace as a magical method for improving your team, your organization, your relationships with clients, and your culture.

    Who is Roger Nierenberg?

Maestro Roger Nierenberg made his New York conducting debut at Avery Fisher Hall with the Pro Arte Chorale and Orchestra, and soon thereafter was invited to conduct operas in two successive seasons at the Mostly Mozart Festival at New York's Lincoln Center. Numerous guest conducting engagements followed with many of the great American symphony orchestras, including those of Austin, Baltimore, Charleston, Columbus, Detroit, Indianapolis, Kansas City, New Jersey, San Diego, St. Louis and Utah, as well as New York's American Symphony Orchestra, Washington D.C.'s National Symphony Orchestra, the Buffalo Philharmonic and the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center.

Abroad, Roger has recorded with the London Philharmonic and conducted at both the Prague Spring Festival with the Czech Radio Orchestra and the Beijing Festival with the Shanghai Broadcasting Symphony Orchestra. Other performances include engagements with the London Mozart Players, Mexico's National Symphony Orchestra, the Nova Scotia Symphony and the Tallinn Chamber Orchestra.

Roger has appeared at numerous summer festivals, including the Tanglewood Institute, the Grand Teton Music Festival, the Colorado Festival, the National Repertory Orchestra and the Madeira Bach Festival. He has also collaborated with many of the most renowned solo artists and composers of our time.

Roger makes his home in New York City and has two children, a son who is a professional pilot and a daughter who is studying French horn.
