098: Rick Harris—Shouldn't You Want to Delight Patients and Deliver Care? Sep 24, 2018
    Show notes

Listen now as Rick Harris talks about being faithful to what people want!

I bet you want to know what "Customer Faithful" is all about! That's what Rick Harris and I talk about in this podcast. Rick is from the UK and has spent much of his career studying consumer behavior. His passion, and the goal of his company, is to find out what really matters to people—the actual consumers or patients who are using your products or services. Much more than a new take on customer service, Customer Faithful enables businesses to be "faithful" to delivering what consumers really want and need. This is fascinating, innovative stuff. Don't miss!

How does Rick do it? He observes.

Much like our own ethnographic or anthropological research at SAMC, Rick knows that he cannot survey people. He has to see for himself what actually happens during a patient's clinical meeting with a physician, what happens when that person leaves and goes back home, and what that person really feels when they are coping with their condition or illness, or interacting with a healthcare provider.

    Rick asks the hard questions:

    • What is it that a person actually experiences in a physician encounter?
    • Is the doctor listening?
    • Is the patient hearing and understanding what is being said by that doctor?

You can just imagine the depth of our conversation. And, you'll enjoy what you'll learn about how seeing things with fresh eyes can really point your entire mindset in new directions.

    Who is Rick Harris?

A researcher with a passion for customer experience, Rick spent his early career in retail, selling everything from general merchandise at Woolworth's to managing convenience stores in Australia and bookshops in the UK. Over time, he wanted to understand more about not just what was sold, but why it was purchased, and how that knowledge could be valuable.

For the next 10 years, Rick helped businesses and organizations explore and understand what it is like to use and buy their goods and services as a customer, and how it feels for those who make or deliver them as an employee. In 2010, Rick made a pivot towards healthcare, taking the tools and principles he learned in researching customer and employee experiences and putting them to work exploring the patient experience.

Since then, Rick has built a reputation for uncovering and interpreting the experiences and needs of patients and their caregivers. He has guided some of the world's largest pharmaceutical and bioscience companies to become more patient-centric, with the aim of making the improvement of patient experience as accepted and sought-after a goal as clinical outcomes.

In addition, Rick's ongoing work in therapy areas, including cancer, asthma and migraine, is breaking new ground in showing how the "voice of the patient" can directly influence the design of treatment and services.

Rick has recently become a Public Governor for the UK's National Health Service (NHS) in Cambridgeshire and is a member of The Market Research Society and the Royal Society of Medicine. To connect with Rick, email him at rick@customerfaithful.com.

During our podcast, Rick and I discuss:

    • His research into the experiences of healthcare patients
    • The primary importance of patient-defined outcomes alongside clinical outcomes
    • What a patient-defined outcome looks like or sounds like
    • How patient outcomes can be applied
    • Where he sees the future of patient experience research heading
    • What healthcare providers should be looking out for as the next big step in becoming patient-centered

097: Bob Burg—Can You Be A Go-Giver To Get the Results You Want? Sep 17, 2018
    Show notes

Listen now as Bob Burg teaches us how to talk to each other to get the results we want!

Today's podcast brings you Bob Burg, internationally renowned author and speaker whose specialty is teaching us how to rebuild relationships so we can actually begin to like each other again. Isn't there a better way to get along? What I loved about our interview was our discussion about Bob's new book, The Go-Giver Influencer: A Little Story About A Most Persuasive Idea. We dig deep into the paradox of achieving what you want by focusing on the other person's interests. Wow, pretty radical, right? And guess what, it works! To find out how and why, listen in.

Is this any way to communicate? Is this any way to live?

Whether between family members, friends, employers and employees, politicians, political pundits, and—of course—tens of millions of people on social media, today's discussions are no longer discussions but rather amped-up, hate-filled, vitriol-spilling diatribes and personal insults.

The result? No minds are being changed but rather, they remain stuck in the "echo chambers" of their already closely-held beliefs. Worse, friends are becoming enemies, discourse has shut down, understanding and acceptance are not being reached, and people feel downright lousy about everything.

What else can you do? Is there another way? Yes. Bob's parable, told in his best-selling Go-Giver Series, is a simple way to re-frame the problem and rewire how we work, talk and gather. His innovative approach all began when Bob and his co-author, John David Mann, wrote The Go-Giver and then their follow up, the bestselling business parable The Go-Giver Leader. Their books challenge the conventional wisdom about success. This podcast will challenge yours as well.

How about getting back to speaking nicely to each other

As Bob sees it, the problem of disagreeable communication is threefold:

    1. It's Not People Disagreeing with One Another…
    2. It's That They Cannot Disagree Agreeably, Civilly,
    3. And, Most Importantly, Persuasively!

How to fix it? According to Bob, it's all about the gift of caring that can make both you and the person you're speaking with find personal happiness in such a way that all parties benefit greatly, resulting in both immediate and long-term success.

Says Bob, "You can get the results you want while making the other person feel genuinely good: about themselves, about the situation, and about you!"

In our podcast, Bob takes us through the Five Secrets of Genuine Influence:

    1. Master Your Emotions
    2. Step into the Other Person's Shoes
    3. Set the Frame...and be ready to "reset" the other person's negative frame
    4. Communicate with Tact and Empathy
    5. Let Go of Having to Be Right

    A little about Bob

Bob Burg speaks all over the world on topics related to The Go-Giver series, as well as what he calls Ultimate Influence™. While his total book sales number well over a million copies, his and Mann's original book has itself sold over 700,000 copies and has spurred an international movement. 096: Gail Zugerman—Some Things Are Right Before You, Crammed Full of Possibilities Sep 10, 2018
    Show notes

Listen now as Gail Zugerman talks about growing older with gusto!

Like several of our podcasts, my interview with Gail Zugerman is with a woman who has reinvented herself several times as she has pursued her passions and her purpose. In our conversation, Gail and I talk about three things of great importance to us and to many of our listeners:

    1. How can baby boomers rewire themselves to feel relevant?
    2. How do they look ahead to people 75+ for inspiration?
    3. Why is the need to build social connections so important to them?

These topics are already touching (or will touch) a great many of us, so I urge you to listen, learn and share!

It's not just the years in your life, it's the life in your years!

Soon, 75 million baby boomers in the U.S. are going to be searching for meaning in their later years, something many of them have never thought about before.

But is this really that unusual? As you grow up, you think about having a career, perhaps getting married or having a significant partner, maybe owning a house or a special car. If you have children, you worry about them and help them cope with life's many challenges. Then, one day you're facing your 60th birthday and seeing a lot of years still in front of you. How are you going to enjoy them, make them meaningful, and do the things you've always wanted to do?

This is exactly what my guest Gail specializes in—changing people's misconceptions about the aging process and the later stages of their lives (and you know I'm all about change). In particular, she helps baby boomers get past their fear of aging and embrace their later years so they can continue to make their mark on society.

095: Cal Halvorsen—A Whole New Way to Grow Old and Have Fun Sep 03, 2018
    Show notes

Listen now as Cal Halvorsen talks about getting the most out of every year of your life!

Our podcast today is all about how to live successfully well into your elder years—whether you plan on living to be 100+ or just want to see life differently, whatever your age. My guest today is Cal Halvorsen, who returned to school for his PhD in social work, graduating from the Brown School at Washington University in St. Louis this past May. Andy and I are very involved in Wash U and therefore very interested in Cal and his research. He's seeing that the years between 50 and 90 have become an entirely new phase in life where you can re-invent yourself and do things you might never have thought about before. So open your mind, listen and learn!

The possibility that you can live into your 90s or even your 100s is changing how people are thinking and "doing" today. No longer is it "work until you are 65" and then retire...to do what? Wait until you die? Find some non-work hobbies to enjoy? Travel, perhaps, or visit your grandkids more often?

Instead, today it's more about "try the next big idea you had." "See if you can fly." "Start a new business or become the musician you always wanted to be." For more and more people, life is truly becoming a journey, not a means to an end. And, people are rethinking how they want to live that journey along the way.

    A little more about Cal

Cal J. Halvorsen, MSW, PhD, graduated from the Brown School at Washington University in St. Louis with his Doctor of Philosophy in Social Work in May 2018. While at the Brown School, Cal was the William E. Gordon Research Fellow. Beginning July 2018, he joined the Boston College School of Social Work as an assistant professor. Prior to getting his PhD, Call was the director of research at Encore.org, a national nonprofit dedicated to engaging people in midlife and beyond in work that improves the world.

Cal's work examines aging societies and the need and desire for people past midlife to work past traditional retirement age, with particular emphasis on self-employment, entrepreneurship and social entrepreneurship among older adults.

Cal's dissertation research, which focused on the characteristics of self-employed Americans in later life and the personal consequences of this work, was funded by the U.S. Social Security Administration. He also earned Washington University's Entrepreneurship Citation and taught courses related to aging societies and social work practice at both the undergraduate and graduate levels.

While at the Brown School, Cal served as an ambassador for the Gerontological Society of America to the Symposium for Healthy Aging in Suzhou, China. During his time at Encore.org, Cal was invited to present at Oxford University in the UK, as well as the Körber Foundation and EBS Universität in Germany.

Cal received his Master of Social Work degree from Washington University in St. Louis and his Bachelor of Arts in International Studies, with honors, from the University of Iowa.

Cal can be reached at cal.halvorsen@bc.edu

    Listen in as we discuss:

    1. The need--and desire--for people to work past traditional retirement age.
    2. The high rates of self-employment among Americans past midlife and the reasons people pursue it.
    3. The need to map out a new life course--rethinking key programs, policies and institutions--to account for increased longevity, changing technologies and the desire for people young and old to find more balance in their lives.

094: Matt Miller: Is Each Conversation a Possible Moment for You to Find Your Destiny? Aug 27, 2018
    Show notes

Listen now as Matt Miller talks about his "a-ha" moment!

In this podcast, I have the pleasure of sharing with you Matt Miller: entrepreneur, imaginative problem solver, creative innovator. You'll be amazed at what he "saw" and how he converted his observations into terrific innovations—and you know how much we like to share these kinds of stories. After nine years in the Air Force as a pilot, Mike moved to the medical device and advertising industries. But, he always wanted to be his own boss. Wait 'til you hear how he did it!

It all started with gumball machines

One day, a friend told Matt a story about his and his daughter's gumball machines, and from this one conversation, Matt had a big idea. He saw how schools needed funds to provide programs for their students. Could vending, like gumball machines, open up an entirely new market space? After a 10-year-long business quest, Matt started his franchising company, School Spirit Vending. This is very Blue Ocean Strategy® and you will hear it in his podcast.

Almost, immediately, School Spirit Vending was on the cutting edge of both the vending and school fundraising industries. Today, it provides a proven and profitable business platform for franchisees and busy professionals seeking to develop secondary income streams with a limited time commitment.

I think the most powerful message Matt has to share is his enduring belief, and it's a contagious one, that you should build a business that supports your life—not a life that supports your business.

Enjoy our podcast and share the conversation.

During our podcast, Matt and I discuss:

    • How he came up with his original, game-changing idea
    • The business model that has turned School Spirit Vending into a lucrative business for him and his franchisees
    • How he took School Spirit Vending into schools and created demand for his vending systems and fundraising method

093: Betty Ng—Finding Success By Helping Others Succeed Aug 20, 2018
    Show notes

Listen now as Betty Ng talks about the power of helping people achieve great things!

I recently had a wonderful conversation with Betty Ng that I am anxious to share with you. In April of this year, Betty published an amazing book with her mother, Po-Ling Ng, called "PO-LING POWER: Propelling Yourself and Others to Success." Widowed at an early age, Po-Ling had to raise her four children with wit and grit. The book and our interview both focus on the inspiring lives of these two incredible women who have risen above their challenging circumstances to make positive, lasting impacts on the lives of others. This podcast is really special. Don't miss it!

Betty and Po-Ling Ng: mother and daughter creators of PO-LING POWER

While these two Chinese-American women leaders have had very different careers and life journeys, Betty and her mother Po-Ling share a common approach to propelling themselves and others to success. In brief, it is all about giving to others and focusing on how to help them achieve remarkable things.

The concept of PO-LING POWER begins with their life stories, and their powerful approach could easily match your own. From our talk, you come away armed with a simple, effective way of seeing things with fresh eyes so you can make the right decisions to propel you into a better life for you and your community. It is all about focusing on what really matters: kindness, community and sharing.

    About our interviewee Betty Ng

Betty Ng is the co-author of "PO-LING POWER: Propelling Yourself and Others to Success" and the founder/CEO of Inspiring Diversity (iD), a collaborative community with members of all backgrounds who inspire, empower and elevate each other to achieve goals. iD works with organizations to drive profitability and sustainability through increased employee inclusion, engagement and performance. Its mission is for members to experience the fulfillment that comes from living by the P.O.L.I.N.G. principles (Priorities, Others, Lead, Inspire, Network and Grow) and helping others succeed.

A tech entrepreneur, content creator, author, trainer, public speaker and consultant, Ng holds degrees from Stanford University and Harvard Business School. Previously, she was a high-level executive at Citigroup and Moody's.

Enjoy our conversation. Read "PO-LING POWER." And tell us how you have propelled yourself and others to great success.

    About Betty's mother Po-Ling Ng

Born in China into a family of eight, Po-Ling migrated with her parents to Hong Kong in 1949, enduring a childhood of extreme poverty. Working long hours after school to earn extra income for the family, Po-Ling was able to attend college, earning a B.A. in Sociology in 1963.

After marrying Po-Ming Ng, a civil-engineer, Po-Ling taught at local schools while pursuing her diploma in education from the Sir Robert Black Teacher's College in 1967. After emigrating to the U.S., language barriers prevented Po-Ling from continuing the teaching career she loved, so she worked as a seamstress at a garment factory in New York's Chinatown. However, her heart was still in education and doing community work. Responding to an ad from the Chinatown Planning Council (CPC), she was soon hired as one of its first staff members.

When Po-Ling's husband passed away suddenly in 1975, she was left on her own to raise their four children. Nevertheless, while working full-time as a single mom, she earned a master's degree in bilingual education from Long Island University, then a second master's from Fordham University School of Social Work.

Becoming CPC's very first executive director, Po-Ling has spent 49 years dedicating herself to community work and is now a highly recognized and well-respected public figure in the Chinese community. Throughout her many years of service, Po-Ling endured tremendous hardships and numerous personal crises, but her persistence and determination won out each time. She turned grief into strength and continued to steadily move forward.

In this podcast, Betty NG and I talk about:

    • Building a career that aligns with your passions
    • Lessons from her mother Po-Ling Ng and how she propelled others to success
    • Several important questions everyone needs to ask themselves
    • PO-LING POWER framework
    • Creating an inclusive and supportive work environment

    092: Mike Scott—Creating A Culture Of Accountability Aug 13, 2018
    Show notes

Listen now as Mike Scott explains why accountability is so important to an organization's success!

One of the reasons I love our On The Brink podcasts is that they give me, and you, the opportunity to learn from thought leaders, CEOs and innovators who proactively look at changes that are coming their way and figure out ways to help their businesses adapt. This often means taking a look at their company processes, something that my guest today, Mike Scott, specializes in. Mike's focus is accountability: why it matters and how it can really strengthen an organization or drag it down. How do you help a person become more accountable? Mike tells us!

The success of your business comes from the accountability and efficiency of your staff

To ensure your company operates at the highest level of accountability and profit, it must run like a well-oiled machine to maximize profits and stay competitive, Mike explains. Therefore, specific tools, efficient systems and disciplined processes must be implemented to create a highly productive work environment. This enables the CEO and management to establish and maintain checks and balances of accountability throughout all levels of the organization.

Yet, as Mike describes in our podcast, time and time again we see internal breakdowns, staff inefficiencies and lost customers because the right systems of accountability are not in place. To remedy these problems, he has a series of workshops on such topics as how to plan and develop projects for on-time completion, how to have fewer/shorter/more productive meetings, and how to interview and hire the right person every time.

    A little about Mike

Mike served in the U.S. Army for four years through the rank of captain, including a one-year tour of duty in Vietnam. He earned his BS in Business and his MA in Psychology from North Dakota State University in Fargo, ND. His experience includes professional executive recruiting, Manager of Recruiting and Training for Reed Tool Company in Houston, and Human Resources Manager for the Energy Banking group of RepublicBank, now Bank of America.

In 1984, Mike started his own training and development company and regularly speaks, designs and conducts training programs for both large and small companies, including McDonald's Corporation, Ernst & Young, AAA and many others.

In this podcast, Mike Scott and I talk about:

    • Why accountability matters and how it can change an organization
    • How to create a culture of accountability in the workplace
    • The importance of choosing a date and time for every commitment
    • Tracking your life and planning strategically
    • Effectively saying "no"

091: Marton Ven—Applying Blockchain to the Food We Eat Aug 06, 2018
    Show notes

Listen now as Marton Ven talks about how blockchain is revolutionizing the food industry!

Wow, the future is coming fast! In this On The Brink podcast, Marton Ven and I talk about the growing, global use of blockchain to ensure that the food you are buying is the food you think you are buying. How? Through farm-to-table traceability technology. Marton is Chief Marketing Officer for TE-FOOD International in Germany, which has become a world leader in the application of blockchain technology to the food industry. Grocery shopping will never be the same. Hear why.

Integrating all steps of the food delivery process into one ecosystem

TE-FOOD is the only fresh food ecosystem which integrates food producers, wholesalers, retailers, veterinarians, supply chain companies, consumers and government authorities in order to improve food safety, eliminate food frauds and decrease costs of the supply chain companies. By providing cost-effective software and identification tools, TE-FOOD aims to make livestock and fresh food supply information transparent.

Piloting a blockchain approach among Wyoming beef ranchers

Wyoming ranchers believe that their premium, grass-fed cattle produce a much higher quality of beef which is particularly lucrative when sold to foreign markets. But how can you know you're getting Wyoming beef for your money rather than just "manufactured" beef? TE-FOOD's technological solution is to tag cattle through RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) ear tags and anchored blockchain technology.

TE-FOOD's traceability technology is also being used in Vietnam to verify the origin of imported Australian beef, and in South Africa, to correctly identify poultry and eggs.

What is blockchain and how does it apply to my food?

Think about putting a mark on something—food, in this case. This mark goes into your "block," a secure computer ledger that only you control. Once installed on that ledger, the mark grows as your chain of blocks grows. Since this blockchain can never be changed and can only be released by you to someone else, it becomes your personal chain of secured items of value, of any type, and totally decentralized.

When you move or sell that object—cattle, for example—to another ledger or block, you release that information to the new computer ledger.

So as cattle move through the process of being shipped for slaughter and then turned into steaks or burgers on your table, the original blockchain code stays with that meat. You can scan the code on the label when you buy the meat so you can know where it came from, exactly.

But this is just the beginning of what blockchain can do and how it can benefit so many aspects of our daily lives. It's an exciting new world coming at us, fast. Are you ready?

Lots of ways to learn more about blockchain

How to capitalize on fast-changing times and not be left behind

If the fast pace of change is unsettling you, have no fear. It feels like it's coming faster but really, the pace is no different today than in the past. You just need a way to adapt. At SAMC, we know that change is literally painful. This is why we help companies drive change rather than waiting for a crisis to force needed change.

Blockchain is a great example. It may change the way the entire world buys, sells, distributes and identifies food. Perhaps it will eliminate the need for credit cards, banks and even Western Union wire transfers. Who knows how many processes it's going to disrupt. Time will tell, but so far it looks like it could make you a lot more secure and your valuables a lot more valuable.

Stay tuned. More changes coming soon.

In this podcast, Marton and I talk about:

    • Data management of the world's food chain
    • How to know for sure where your food came from
    • The many uses of traceability technology
    • How blockchain has the potential to change the way business works everywhere

090: Theresa Carrington: Transforming Impoverished Artisans Into Entrepreneurs Jul 30, 2018
    Show notes

Listen now as Theresa Carrington shares how she helps shift artisans from poverty to prosperity!

Once in a while, I get to interview someone who is not only doing great things in the business world but also in the human world. That would be Theresa Carrington, founder of the non-profit Ten By Three (formerly The Blessing Basket Project), a social entrepreneurship program that is both profitable and a way out of poverty for thousands around the world. Ending poverty sustainably is something even the World Bank has not been able to solve, but Theresa is well on her way to doing just that. If you want to smile while hearing an amazing startup story, listen in.

Theresa Carrington is changing the world, having discovered the tipping point from poverty to prosperity

What started as one woman's vision to create a sustainable solution to reduce poverty in developing countries evolved into Ten By Three, the first and only non-profit to win the Olin Cup business competition at Washington University in St. Louis. Over the last decade, Theresa's startup has been discovering and perfecting unique approaches to sustainable poverty reduction, helping create sustainable prosperity for more than 10,000 people in just 10 years.

Igniting entrepreneurial spirit by providing a launching pad

Ten By Three's patent-pending financial model enables artisans to earn Prosperity Wages (which are significantly higher than fair trade wages) for their products. In some instances, the difference in wages could be as much as $11 for a basket. In this model, artisans are paid directly, eliminating the middleman, and are required to start businesses funded by earnings from their basket sales. It is those entrepreneurial ventures that empower them to lift themselves out of poverty.

    Helping artisans become entrepreneurs

Through Ten By Three's other model, Graduate from Poverty, artisans will "tip" from poverty to prosperity in about three years. The organization knows that artisans are ready to graduate when they spend more time running their businesses than weaving. On graduation day, each artisan stands before their family, their village and their village leaders to declare publicly that they are free of poverty and ready to stand on their own two feet as an independent business owner. During this empowering ceremony, each graduate receives a badge and a graduation certificate which are often used to prove their business savvy to local banks and micro-lending programs which provide the funding that their businesses will need to grow.

    089: Ask Andi—Change Management Step 3 Jul 27, 2018
    Show notes

Listen now to my podcast about how to bring real, lasting change to your organization!

Welcome to Part 3 of the work we've been doing on change management, change mapping and creating change management strategies. Now, you're ready to learn the steps to take to actually bring about real change in your organization. Your task is to make the undesirable desirable, and to do this, two things have to be in place: motivation and ability. Yes, change is hard, and yes, your people will most likely fight it, but once you get going, you'll find the process extremely exciting. The future of your business may be at stake, so I urge you not to miss this Ask Andi!

You're trying to make the undesirable desirable

Remember, humans hate change. They're afraid of it. And so when you try to get them to change, typically they will put up a hurdle. The first one is, "I don't understand it," and the second one is, "I'm not motivated to do it." What I talk about in this Part 3 is how to overcome these hurdles.

When you start trying to change your organization, you are going to be asking people to change the story in their minds from what they believe to be true to something they are unfamiliar with. They will need to visualize the new story, the new desirable. What's so important about this step is that the new story has to be visual, so if you don't have your people draw pictures and tell you stories about it, it will remain abstract and nothing will change.

    Invest in skill-building

If the ability isn't there, telling someone they should jump higher won't get you anywhere, because they won't know what higher means, much less how to do it. So if you're trying to build an organization that's, for example, more innovative or more self-motivated, what are the new skills people will need in order to be more innovative?

    Pay attention to the why

Why's matter. You'll determine your success by talking and talking and talking about why. And you'll see that when people know why the change is necessary, they stop resisting. Explaining why, in a sense, communicates caring and esteem to people. This is not to be underestimated.

    The right symbols really matter

We're humans. We "live our symbols," so take a look at your organization, at the rituals your people take part in to recognize accomplishments, and at how you're going to change those rituals. The most important changes will be in the symbols. Get your company's leaders, particularly those who can undermine the whole change effort, to become leaders in the symbolic process. If they embrace it, others will too.

Take a look at our webinar, "Managing the Process of Change"

In this instructional webinar, we demonstrate the ChangeMap™ process. Instead of fighting change and making it more painful than it needs to be, follow these strategies that will enable you and your staff to adapt to changing times.

Wondering how to bring about lasting change that works? Let's talk.

In today's disruptive economy, your business needs to be able to sustain growth in changing times or you risk being left hopelessly behind. Often, the best place to start is with your culture. Is it ready to respond to the needs of the future or is it mired in the outdated ways of the past? At Simon Associates Management Consultants, we specialize in helping organizations change, grow and thrive amidst today's fast-changing times. Please contact us. We'd like to help.
