207: Kim Bohr—Assessing Your Company's Organization To Sustain Growth In Changing Times Jun 10, 2020
    Show notes

Learn how to realign your organization for amazing growth!

We were delighted recently to have another great interview about leadership and organizational development, this time with Kim Bohr. She was terrific. An author, excellent keynote speaker, executive advisor and CEO of The Innovare Group, Kim talked with us about how she works with companies and their leaders to assess, align and accelerate their strategic priorities. Notably, she helps them see that each of their decisions has a profound impact on their talent, company culture, and ultimately, their business's growth. Want to grow? Listen in as Kim teaches us how!

Making businesses better from the inside out

A life-long learner, cross-functional executive, keynote speaker, author and calculated risk-taker, Kim Bohr is passionate about helping companies and their leaders overcome the strategic hurdles that are holding them back. After seeing a disturbing pattern of disconnects and misaligned efforts that cost companies time, talent and the ability to scale efficiently, she founded The Innovare Group, whose specialty is diagnosing and repairing organizational and leadership disconnects.

Kim's diverse experiences — successes as well as failures — were acquired serving on boards and as a highly strategic employee for global, corporate, VC-funded, non-profit and family-owned businesses. Utilizing that first-hand knowledge, she now advises clients on how to build, grow and turn their organizations around at varying stages of the business life cycle. At the heart of Kim's approach is the firm belief that aligning strategy with the development of leadership behaviors, emotional intelligence and critical thinking is the smartest approach to creating a sustainable business culture. As culture change experts, we heartily agree.

Kim's book, "Successes, Failures & Lessons Learned: A Career Journal," helps busy professionals gain confidence, recognition and career advancement by capturing important insights and accomplishments on a weekly basis before their impact fades away.

    206: Dave McKeown—The Need For Self-Evolved Leadership Jun 08, 2020
    Show notes

Learn how to be the great leader the future needs!

We have been developing a Leadership Academy for a healthcare system and working with their team to develop great leaders. This is particularly important during times of great stress, like this pandemic that is upon us. But it is equally important during the more normal yet still uncertain times that were affecting the world before the COVID-19 mess. The need for effective leadership goes way beyond healthcare. It is a recurring theme virtually everywhere. But what type of leaders are needed for the Fourth Industrial Revolution, with all the changes to our workplace and workers? Add the pandemic to the mix and leadership is facing its own crisis. How can we soften the great transformation and enable leaders of today to refocus for tomorrow? Listen in.

    What makes a great leader?

In this podcast, Dave McKeown and I talk about why our current leadership models are broken, why it's imperative that we fix them and how to take the first steps to becoming a Self-Evolved Leader, the subject of his book. There is no shortage of literature about leadership, the different styles that fit different cultures, and the approach that is needed to build followers. But Dave teaches us how to actually make it happen: how to master the key components of becoming a great leader, build a team vision, and create an implementation plan to develop needed disciplines.

In our interview, we also discuss how to take this Self-Evolved Leader concept and spread the ideas across a team, department or entire organization, in part by building a shared vocabulary and language and in larger part by showing the way, not telling people how. It is a very timely conversation that you will enjoy.

Some of the topics Dave and I discuss:

    • What is Self-Evolved Leadership?
    • What is the problem with our current leadership models?
    • What is the cycle of mediocrity?
    • What is heroic leadership and why is it a problem?
    • What is the key mindset of the Self-Evolved Leader?
    • What are the key components of becoming a Self-Evolved Leader?

    More about Dave McKeown

Dave helps individuals, teams and organizations achieve excellence by doing ordinary things extraordinarily well. As Founder and CEO of Outfield Leadership and author of "The Self-Evolved Leader: Elevate Your Focus and Develop Your People in a World That Refuses to Slow Down," Dave specializes in connecting individual and team performance to improved business results with a particular focus on fast-growing, complex organizations.

Dave started his career as a consultant at Accenture, quickly rising to COO. He then became President of Predictable Success, a boutique consultancy focused on helping businesses achieve scalability, while also leading Inc. Consulting, a joint venture with Inc. Media. He has worked with leaders at Spectrum Health, Renewal by Andersen, Akamai, NYSE and many smaller, fast-growing organizations, and has shared his leadership strategies at numerous conferences.

Currently, Dave speaks, coaches and trains individuals and organizations how to move from execution to excellence by building a culture of real, authentic, but ultimately results-driven leadership. He also hosts the podcast, "Lead Like you Give a Damn," and writes a weekly column for Inc.Com.

205: Doris Milton—How You Can Adapt, Fast, To Changing Times Jun 04, 2020
    Show notes

Learn how you can change and find your dream career!

Doris Milton and I do very similar things, albeit in different ways. We love to help people change so they can thrive in changing times. Today's podcast focuses on how Doris does this for healthcare professionals who have begun to burn out at their jobs. We talk about how to help people who are searching for other paths in their lives, paths that better fit their purpose and passions. With the coronavirus now all around the world, I have a hunch that this podcast is going to speak to far too many healthcare professionals. While we hope they all emerge from the pandemic unscathed, we know that the rigors of their profession take its toll on them. Do listen.

Having worked in healthcare myself for many years as a hospital executive, and with over one third of our clients in healthcare, we watch doctors, nurses and adminstrators try to navigate the uncertain waters that are characteristic of their industry. The paperwork is overwhelming. The regulations, while well-intended, often add additional work and go-arounds, and the volume of daily patients, even before the pandemic, far exceeded the available staff and facilities. If you are in healthcare, or know someone who is, listen to Doris's approach to helping you pause, take stock, and rethink your life.

Doris's forte is helping people change

Doris had a dream career in healthcare and wanted that for others. She now works with people on a change process to find their own dream careers. They often resist at first, thinking change is too hard, or that they don't have time to learn how to change. After working with Doris, they actually find that changing their lives for the better doesn't take as much time to plan and implement as they think.

Doris's clients typically arrive at her door through circuitous routes. Some have stalled in their careers and don't know where to go next. Others have been "reorganized" and are not sure they like what the new organization is going to offer them. Many are just burned out, emotionally drained and no longer able to enjoy their daily lives. All of them need a boost and someone to help them.

What many don't realize is that once they have a detailed plan for their dream career, they can start to move forward. They can then use their time and energy more wisely, stop spinning their wheels, and work toward a happier life.

    Her change process

    1. The first step is for someone to actually have a career goal…what is their dream career? What would they love to be doing? If there were no limitations, what would their dream job look like?

    2. Next, they need to create a detailed career plan, focusing on the qualifications they will need to achieve the professional position they want in 3-5 years.

    3. Finally, they must identify what they are doing today to undermine or sabotage their career growth. Many people do not realize that despite acquiring more education, certifications, experience and published articles, they often do things that reflect poorly on themselves as people. From inappropriate postings on social media to openly criticizing others, they can be a powerful obstacle to their own career advancement. In such cases, Doris coaches people on how to polish their performance and project a positive, professional image.

    Doris Milton, PhD, RN

The founder of Healthcare Career Growth, Doris Milton has had a 50-year career in nursing and healthcare. Her extensive expertise includes staff nurse, Director of Research and Education for two healthcare systems and a primary care center, dean and assistant dean, author of several books and book chapters, editor and reviewer for several professional journals, mentor and coach to numerous healthcare professionals, professional speaker and workshop facilitator.

Doris gets great satisfaction from helping others design a personalized plan so they can focus on achieving their career goals, and has found that having such a plan helps leaders fast track their success.

204: David Rendall—The Freak Factor: Discovering Uniqueness by Flaunting Weakness Jun 01, 2020
    Show notes

Learn how to embrace your flaws to achieve success

This was an unexpectedly powerful interview. David Rendall has literally turned lemons into lemonade. As he shares with us, growing up he had a hard time fitting into the norms which his teachers and parents expected of him. He moved around too much, talked too much, and found himself always a little on the outside of what others thought was "normal." Then he had an epiphany. He realized that what he had was a gift for turningd the things that others did not want him to do into things they loved watching him do. He took his weaknesses and turned them into strengths. In this podcast, he teaches us how to do the same. Incredible lessons here! Listen in.

Unleash your inner freak... and discover your unique potential

Try it. David tells us to think of the things that make us strange―the weaknesses that we won't admit during a job interview or performance evaluation. Perhaps, those lemons are not sour at all. Your successes, your strengths, may be the very things that make you stand out from the crowd.

Our parents, teachers, bosses and managers have told us that if we want to succeed, we should find and fix our weaknesses. However, this is the wrong approach, David says, because each weakness is also a strength. Listen in to our conversation to find out how to create outrageous personal and professional success by amplifying your flaws instead of denying them.

Are you embracing your inner freak, or are you hiding it in order to conform and maintain the status quo?

David Rendall believes that highlighting your weaknesses is crucial for your success. During the last 15 years, he has spoken on this topic to audiences all over the world, including the US Air Force, the Australian Government, and numerous Fortune 50 companies such as Microsoft, AT&T, United Health Group, Fannie Mae and State Farm Insurance. Prior to becoming a highly sought-after speaker, David was a leadership professor and stand-up comedian. He also managed several nonprofit enterprises which provided employment for people with disabilities.

David has a Doctor of Management degree in organizational leadership, as well as a graduate degree in psychology. In between presentations, David competes in ultramarathons and Ironman triathlons. He is also the author of four books:

    • "The Freak Factor"
    • "The Freak Factor for Kids"
    • "The Four Factors of Effective Leadership"
    • "Pink Goldfish"

202: Andrea Simon—Now Is No Time To Be Afraid Of This Blurry Future May 26, 2020
    Show notes

Learn how to reinvent your reality and embrace change

As we work with our clients during this pandemic, we're noticing a recurring theme. They've figured out how to deal with living at home, working at home and being at home. But now they're beginning to be anxious about what's coming next. It's strange, isn't it, that without a clear vision of the future, it's very hard to live today. In this podcast, I talk about these feelings that so many of us are having, and how this crisis is an excellent time for you to innovate, reinvent your reality, and start doing the things you've been trying to do for a long time. Please listen, learn and share.

What is "what's next" going to look like?

What I'm calling the "blurry future" is unsettling to us. These are ambiguous times, and humans hate ambiguity. We hate to be between a black box and a white box in that grey space where we are uncertain what is good or bad, right or wrong. Today's ambiguity and constant changes are creating all kinds of stress. The pain of change is, quite simply, painful.

Martin Seligman's excellent book, "Homo prospectus," describes how we need to see the future clearly if we're going to leave today...even if the future is an imagined one, because that's the way our brains work. The challenge for us during the COVID-19 crisis is how to do our work today when we're uncertain about what's going to be the new normal, and if the old normal is ever coming back. That's why it may be time to make up that imagined future Seligman talks about.

We need a new visualization of the future

As humans, we live in a perceptual reality. Our brain takes information and creates a story about it, and that becomes our reality. That story is one that you create. It's your own movie, and the roles you are going to play in that movie are going to change as the story unfolds in unforeseen ways. Since your brain is looking for that movie, why not make up a new one in which you can be a hero. Your staff and customers will have important roles to play too in the future you are creating. (If you want to read more about how to visualize the future, check out Martin Seligman's New York Times op-ed, "We Aren't Built to Live in the Moment." )

It's time to reinvent your reality so you can embrace your future

As culture change experts, we always tell our clients that if they want to change, they should have a crisis or create one. Well, that crisis is here. So don't waste it. It is a great time to reinvent your reality and make it work for you, not you for it. In other words, make change your friend.

201: Karen Dietz—Your Story Is Your Secret to Amazing Success May 21, 2020
    Show notes

Hear why stories are the secret to your success

As humans, we are all storytellers. That's what people do. Our brains take the information they receive and create stories to make sense of it. By the time you are in your late 20s, you pretty much have created your own story, and changing that "reality" is very difficult. You only "see" what your brain tells you fits with your own story. And usually, you are the hero in that story. When a friend introduced me to Karen Dietz, a pioneer in business storytelling, I was thrilled at the opportunity to share her with you. Karen shares with us her wisdom, and also her own story. Listen in, then think about your own story and ask yourself if it needs changing for today's times?

Karen and myself: remarkably similar journeys

Karen and I both had academic backgrounds and migrated into business: myself, to apply the methods and tools of anthropology to help companies change. Karen, to apply her knowledge of storytelling and folklore in business settings, helping organizations understand their origin myths, capture the power of their internal folklore, and better match internal stories with those communicated by their customers about them.

As Karen tells us, transformational storytelling can help you change your world, or at least better understand how your world is changing. There is no better time than now to understand why stories are so important and are the secret to our success.

Storytelling is key to who we are as a species

There is great research that shows how humans have evolved over thousands of years because of our unique ability to communicate different realities, share complex ideas, and craft stories that bond us together into like-minded cultures.

Think about your own story and that of the family members you live with, as well as the story of the folks you work with. Is it the story you want? Is it time to step out and think about that story through a fresh lens? Maybe it is even time to change the story, and the reality that it presumes to convey. During times of change, like these, your story might be out of step with what it needs to become to enable you to thrive. Give it a shot. See what you can create and then live that new story for a better, happier, more productive reality.

    About Karen Dietz

Dr. Karen Dietz is not only a leader in transformational business storytelling but also one of the veterans in the field. In 2013, Wiley publishing company recruited Karen for its Dummies series. Her book, "Business Storytelling for Dummies," became a bestseller within a year. Karen is also featured in eight books on business storytelling.

Currently, Karen coaches leaders and rising stars in transformational storytelling, communication and influence. Her clients include Disney, Princess Cruises, Citrix, Avery-Dennison, Cedars-Sinai, Viasat, a roster of nonprofits and numerous entrepreneurs. In 2013, she opened the San Diego TEDx conference with her talk on the impact of story listening to change lives and companies.

Karen received her master's and PhD in Folklore from the University of Pennsylvania.

While some pundits are already claiming to know what we will do as we come out of this crisis, Adam and I both know from our own experience as futurists and as anthropologists that predicting the future is maybe an art, but rarely a science, much less correct. It is just another clever story that we humans create when we want certainty in a period of uncertainty. These are times when we are re-writing our own personal story so we can make sense out of the disruptions. The fictions are typically ones where we are the heroes, the others are the barbarians, and we win. I hope we, all of us, are winners.

But rather than imagining the unknown and unfamiliar, we can watch and listen to how people attempt to redesign their lives. That is the best "certainty" of all the imagined ones. And that is how people create their realities when the ones they had before are no longer the reality of the present. As I do interviews for our podcast, I love the stories people are sharing with us about how they are capturing the new, and leveraging their talent, their skills and their imaginations to re-invent their own present and future. Join in our conversation and learn from our journey.
