    217: Melina Palmer—Why Don't People Do What They Say Jul 03, 2020
    Show notes

Learn why it's not what you think, it's what your brain does

I bet you have often wondered why you hear people say one thing and then do the opposite. Or, perhaps you know you should do one thing but then find yourself going in another direction. To find answers, behavioral economists study why people are so predictably irrational, which by the way, includes each of us. In this podcast, I speak with a behavioral economist whom you are going to love listening to, Melina Palmer. Afterward, you won't think of your brain the same way!

What is behavioral economics? Why does it matter to you?

Melina Palmer, host of The Brainy Business Podcast, has dedicated her career to seeking answers to these questions for herself and her clients. In these uncertain times, it's more important than ever to make sure your message is properly communicating with the brain of your customer. Small things make a big difference. In one study, states Melina's website, changing a single word in an ad resulted in a 38% increase in sales. Worth paying attention to!

Want to understand why we do what we do? Key takeaways from our interview:

    • What we have learned as we study the human brain.
    • How we make decisions with the subconscious leading the way and overriding the conscious mind.
    • Why framing, anchoring and adjusting are so important. (If you see a sign in a store for 10 bottles for $10, and another sign for the same bottles at $1 each, which do you buy, 10 individual bottles or the 10 for $10? You guessed it. The way something is framed greatly influences how you decide what to do.)
    • How to skillfully use these concepts to persuade someone to agree to a higher or lower number or quantity. This helps close sales, increase conversions and steer negotiations.
    • Our brains are all about shortcuts. When your subconscious brain doesn't know the answer to something, it makes a guess.

    About Melina Palmer

Melina was the first person to graduate from the University of Washington's Global Honors Program with a degree in business. Her senior thesis was presented at the Association of Consumer Research Symposium in Hyderabad, India. A lifelong learner, she then pursued a Master's in Behavioral Economics from The Chicago School of Professional Psychology.

Through her company, The Brainy Business, Melina works with organizations and entrepreneurs to understand and master the small changes that make product programs, pricing, change initiatives, branding, internal communication and marketing messages "brain friendly," increasing engagement and ROI.

214: Michael Tate—Are You Terrified Of The Pain Of Change? Jun 26, 2020
    Show notes

Learn how to embrace change rather than flee from it

I have had the pleasure of interviewing Michael (Mike) Tate once before on our podcast, in March of 2019. He is a charming man who has a purpose and a passion to help others find their way through often-challenging times. Today's podcast focuses on his new book, "Roll Up Your Sleeves," a collection of common-sense approaches to managing stress that are very helpful for leaders, in their careers and in their lives. Career coaching is Mike's passion and calling, and he loves helping clients make their best next career move. Are you facing some big changes in your work, your life? I invite you to listen in and learn from Mike. He has great lessons for all of us.

Growth means change, which means transition

Whether you're moving to a new position, a better job or a new phase of your life, movement means change, and change is not easy. In the same way, guiding your team through change to a new, better place takes a vision, a plan and a process. As we tell our clients, if you need to change, have a crisis! For good or for ill, a big crisis is now here.

In our discussion today, Mike and I talk at length about the difference between change and transitions. Neither is easy but they aren't the same. As we go through this period of chaos in the world today, we need to know what we are facing and how to navigate our way through it.

As culture change experts, we specialize in helping organizations that need or want to change. That's why so much of what Mike and I discuss today affirms what we at SAMC know so well: that change is hard, even painful, but these challenging times demand it.

In our discussion and in his new book "Roll Up Your Sleeves," Mike shares:

    • His simple toolset for any leader facing a complex world of constant change
    • A clear understanding of what change does to employees, friends and family
    • An overall view of the real sense of the emotional impact of change

    About Mike Tate

By way of consulting, coaching and writing, Michael Tate, MRE, CMF helps leaders navigate change and transition. President of On the Same Page Consulting, Inc., a leadership strategy and career planning firm, Mike is known for bringing his clients better results in less time. 213: Sevetri Wilson—How To Make Sure Money Flows To Where The Need Is? Jun 24, 2020
    Show notes

Hear how to make sure donations have an impact

Sevetri Wilson, serial entrepreneur and founder of two highly successful companies, had a purpose and a passion. She wanted to make a difference, in the world and in people's lives. In our podcast today, she will tell you how she had to rethink her future and move in directions she had never anticipated, always helping others. Maybe your life has followed similar paths? I know you'll find Sevetri's story and the work she is doing very inspirational, as I did. Listen and enjoy!

Dedicated to giving back and getting it done

Following college, Sevetri Wilson landed at Louisiana CASA, an organization that helps secure safe and permanent homes for abused and neglected children. As she was creating campaigns to lobby for support of children, people started seeing her as someone could help start or support other foundations or nonprofits. Sensing a bigger need for her talents, she expanded her scope to creating core communications for other organizations while helping them develop partnerships, give back to their communities, and deliver what their donors were expecting. Soon, Sevetri was a powerhouse in New Orleans, with more to come.

Did you know that nonprofits are one of the largest industries in the US?

In 2016, non-profit organizations employed 12.3 million people, approximately 1 in 10 jobs in the private sector. Today, the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and the economic recession are causing serious challenges to these organizations at the very time that their services are most in demand. Moreover, funders are unclear about how to get their monies to the right organizations so their funds can have the most impact, today and tomorrow.

    Making "collective impact" happen

To help fill the gap between funders' expectations and nonprofits' performance, as well as establish transparency and accountability, Sevetri formed Resilia in 2016, a New Orleans-based technology startup dedicated to: 1) simplifying the creation and maintenance of nonprofit organizations, 2) helping donors match their funding with the right nonprofits, and 3) making sure that funding actually goes to the programs the donors intend it to.

With Resilia, donors can now follow the progress of their financial support, ensuring that the nonprofits they're giving to have the resources they need to make real change happen, and to make that change stick. Called collective impact, it's a 360-degree approach to change, with everyone pushing for the same goal at the same time.

During this current time of dual crises — the pandemic and economic devastation — collective impact is precisely what Sevetri and her organization are making happen. While nationwide collective efforts are pushing recovery programs forward, Resilia enables the organizations carrying out those programs to measure their effectiveness and see the impact they're having on people's lives and communities. A true win-win, with impact far beyond today.

    About Sevetri Wilson

As the first black woman in New Orleans to raise over $1MM in venture capital, serial entrepreneur Sevetri Wilson is the founder of two companies, Solid Ground Innovations and Resilia, bootstrapping the first to seven figures with zero capital, and raising over $3MM for the second. Sevetri's clients have included Fortune 100 and 500 companies, small businesses, government agencies, political figures and nonprofit organizations. She has been featured in The Wall Street Journal, USA Today, The New York Times and on CNN.

In 2010, Sevetri received the National Nobel Prize for Public Service and The Jefferson Award for advocacy and community outreach for the curriculum design she created. In the same year, she was featured in the Senate's report to the White House on volunteerism in America. In 2013, she was chosen as Business Woman of the Year from the Louisiana Legislative Women's Caucus, and in 2016, she was appointed to Louisiana Governor John Bel Edwards' Economic Development Transition team where she worked with 16 other business leaders from across the state to create recommendations for economic growth in the state of Louisiana.

As well as being a contributing writer for Entrepreneur and Inc. magazines, Sevetri is heavily involved in her community, serving on the board of directors for UNCF-NOLA, Downtown Development District, YWCA and LSU AP Tureaud Black Alumni. She is also an active member of the New Orleans Chamber of Commerce, New Orleans Black Chamber of Commerce and Alpha Kappa Alpha, Sorority, Inc. You can contact Sevetri On Facebook, Twitter and on her website.

    212: Amanda Levinson—How Can Technology Help In A Crisis? Jun 22, 2020
    Show notes

Hear how one person is making a huge difference

You are going to be captivated by this podcast with Amanda Levinson. If you have ever asked, "Why is it so hard to help people in need?" you may find your answer in NeedsList, the tech company she co-founded that offers solutions for communities displaced by climate change, conflict and poverty worldwide. A social entrepreneur, Amanda spends her time trying to make life better for others. You'll hear how she was inspired by her grandmother, a woman who was also trying to change the world for the better. (I remember my own grandmother, who molded me and whom I unknowingly modeled myself after.) You'll also hear how Amanda converted her values, beliefs and culture into programs and products to achieve her purpose. Please enjoy.

By her own admission, Amanda is a woman on a mission

In our interview, Amanda talks about how she and her co-founder Natasha Freidus started NeedsList in 2015 after witnessing the chaos of the humanitarian response to the Syrian refugee crisis, and knew there had to be a better way. No single system was able to deal with the size and scope of this crisis — many were trying to help — and Amanda and Natasha didn't want to duplicate what was already out there. But the needs were changing all the time, and there were no tools to communicate those needs in real time. People want to be helpful in a disaster, but without the proper overarching organization and technology, there is gigantic waste (like food and used clothing that arrived months too late to be useful.)

Out of the chaos and these two women's creativity came NeedsList, a real time directory that enables people in need to request support and others to send that support to the right place at the right time. Initially designed to allow individual donors to assist humanitarian organizations, NeedsList was very successful. However, it quickly became clear that the agencies that were meant to address needs during a crisis and coordinate the response were often disconnected and failed to achieve the desired goals. Time for a Blue Ocean Strategy?

A software solution to identify what was needed and when

Amanda and Natasha found themselves asking, What resources were available from large companies and organizations that could help those in need? Their solution was to create a new business model in which the directory software could be licensed to organizations which could use it to better allocate and match resources with needs. Very Blue Ocean Strategy, indeed!

NeedsList can now help organizations at all levels because it solves the enduring questions: What are the needs and where are they most urgent? Sounds so basic but it was hardly easy or simple to bring together. Today, NeedsList software has been deployed in over 20 countries worldwide, directing over $2 million in resources to local communities.

Communities are willing to cooperate and when they do, it's transformative

Now that they understand what and where the needs are, Amanda and her team are using AI to develop better systems with more predictive modeling so they can better plan for a disaster. For instance, areas with a lot of families will need different services than those with a concentration of seniors. Without a fast, easy way to identify these details, crisis response and recovery becomes a one-size-fits-all solution that all too often fits few. Now, people can get the help they need when and where they need it.

    About Amanda Levinson

With 20 years' experience helping launch, scale and sustain positive social ventures, Amanda focuses on the uses and limits of technology to solve some of the world's biggest problems, intentionally designing solutions alongside the people who will directly benefit from them.

The results of her efforts? NeedsList has been the US winner of Visa's Visa Everywhere Initiative in the Social Impact Category, winner of North Carolina's Tech for Good award, and just recently, acknowledged in Fast Company's World Changing Ideas issue.

211: Kerri Schoonyoung—Coming Out Of The Recession, Are You Ready For Your Life 2.0 Jun 19, 2020
    Show notes

Learn how to navigate a new path for yourself!

Is this a time when you have been forced to strip out the busy parts of life and rethink what comes next? Is it time to stop checking the boxes? And have you recognized lately that you are really good at self-motivation, independence and autonomy, but you aren't able to do any of that in your old job? You might ask yourself in this new world we now find ourselves in, what gets you out of bed in the morning? In this podcast, Kerri Schoonyoung will share with us how she and her company, Dept. 11, can help you find your "Life 2.0." Get ready to listen, learn and share!

This is opportunity time, not ostrich time

These current days might be particularly hard for you if your old job has been your only job. It has become who you are, your identity. Especially for older generations who have been in their careers for a long time, on one path, breaking that mold is particularly challenging. But it's ok to change. If you put some thought into what really motivates you, you can find a new path. You might not have a choice. That old world may not be coming back the way it was before—if at all.

Although transitions are hard, keep in mind that you're not alone. This time of great change is affecting everyone. People are realizing that all jobs in all industries have some inherent risk in them, regardless of the position, and what burdens you are willing to take on and sacrifices you are prepared to make.

Now is a time to learn an entirely new job: how to brand and market you

The whole process of transition is a process. As you will hear in our interview, Kerri urges us to see the possibilities as opportunities. Rather than focusing on what you cannot do, think about what you can do and what you really want to do. Perhaps her ideas will resonate with you today so you can begin to create the new you for tomorrow.

    About Kerri Schoonyoung

With more than 20 years' experience as a digital marketer and business executive, Kerri has spent her career leading cross-functional teams in "storytelling," from creating memorable marketing campaigns to providing campaign analytics. 210: Lisa Broderick—How To Build Peaceful Communities With Our Peace Officers Jun 17, 2020
    Show notes

Hear how attitudes toward police became transformed

Lisa Broderick recently told me how she had her "aha" moment. Sitting on a beach in Florida, she watched a police four-wheeler driving along the sand. On its side was a big sign: Peace Officer. She had long been disturbed by the amount of violence in our cities, in our society, and in fact, everywhere. Could the words "Peace Officer" change how we thought about the men and women in uniform who are here to help us stay peaceful? Was there a "low tech, high impact" way to create meaningful and lasting change? Yes, there was. Lisa created Police2Peace, a non-pofit that works with cities and police departments around the country to transform safety and security into a collaborative effort. Now more than ever, all of us need to hear her amazing story.

A peaceful community is a far safer community

The organization Lisa founded, Police2Peace, was started with the idea that the simple daily exchange and use of words create more peace and harmony for communities, and greater public trust for law enforcement. What Police2Peace tries to communicate is that the police are more than just law enforcement officers — they are peace officers. (And don't we need a lot more of this today.)

The research you'll hear Lisa describe in our interview was conducted in two areas of the country, California and South Carolina. In both places, social scientists measured community attitudes before and after the launch of Police2Peace. This "launch" merely consisted of putting new signs on the sides of police vehicles, saying "Peace Officer." The result? First and foremost, that what research has proven many times over is really true: using different language changes how people "feel" and "think" about things. In this case, the new signs dramatically changed how those two communities saw their police...not as adversaries as in the past but as peaceful fellow citizens helping others stay peaceful.

Today, Police2Peace is rolling out to communities throughout the country, providing them with their own "Peace Officer"signs. The challenge, Lisa says, is for police departments, from the top down, to believe that actively displaying the signs will help them accomplish what they want most — to keep people safe and peaceful.

    Who is Lisa Broderick?

From her early days at Apple over 30 years ago to helping launch some of the first e-commerce companies on the internet, Lisa Broderick has been at the forefront of utilizing communication tools to transform people and change social behavior. An experienced speaker and presenter, she has appeared on numerous television broadcasts including CNN and ABC News. Lisa earned her BA in Economics from Stanford University and her MBA in Global Finance and Management from Duke University.

209: Billy Bross—How To Capitalize On The Online Courses Gold Mine Jun 15, 2020
    Show notes

Learn how to market and grow your own online course!

I had the pleasure recently of interviewing Billy Bross, a business coach and consultant who specializes in marketing online courses. Billy helps people create and market online courses so they can share their great ideas with others — and earn a living doing it. A true entrepreneur, he left a promising career in the renewable energy industry to grow an online academy for home beer brewers. Other course creators started asking Billy for help, and he has now sold online courses in over 50 different niches, generating millions of dollars in revenue for his clients. During our podcast you will learn how he did it and how you might be able to as well. Enjoy.

Helping course creators rise above the noise

Online courses are experiencing exponential growth right now, with experts projecting it will be a $325 billion industry by the year 2025. Millions of people across the globe will be taking online courses over the coming years, meaning that smart entrepreneurs who teach online stand to benefit tremendously from this boom in demand.

But, as Billy reminds us, you may have the best online course in your market, but that doesn't matter if nobody finds out about it. So how do you get the word out when there is so much competition? His answer: craft a marketing campaign which brings in high-quality, paying students, then deliver amazing learning experiences so they rave about it and tell their friends. The students get great results and the business grows so it can serve more people. As entrepreneurs ourselves who work with and coach aspiring entrepreneurs, this approach makes perfect sense.

Learn how to write a book and get it on Amazon!

As an award-winning author and now having finished my second book, I know it is a tough row to hoe when you think you have something to share and want to write a book about it. You yourself might be wondering, but how do you write a book? In today's podcast, Suzanne Doyle-Ingram talks about her method for helping people, just like you and me, write, publish, and best of all, use their book to grow their business. If you've got an idea and want to share it, don't miss this!

Helping people write books that change the world

A highly sought-after coach for business professionals, Suzanne has personally developed a terrific method for how to write and publish a book, then how to successfully leverage it to increase your visibility. The idea of a book, she explains, is to help people do something with it. Book sales are challenging, but credentialing yourself with a published book can dramatically help you grow your brand and your business.

As CEO of Prominence Publishing, Suzanne works with people from all walks of life to help them write a book and become published authors (currently, 700 clients and counting). Through her online courses and private and group coaching, Suzanne has seen people's lives changed as a direct result of their books. Do you want to write a book but have no idea where to start, or what to write about? Have you already written a book but you're stuck trying to figure out how to get it on Amazon? Is your book already on Amazon but you need help with visibility, podcasts, media and creating an online course? Suzanne can help you!

You can contact Suzanne at suzanne@prominencepublishing.com, Facebook or her website.
