227: Pat Shea—Use Your Passions To Become Who You Want To Be Aug 03, 2020
    Show notes

Hear about the joy of volunteering and giving to others

I met Pat Shea through the Women's Business Collaborative and couldn't be happier to get to know her. Here is a woman who has a purpose and a passion to help others and wants to share her story. During our podcast, we talk about her own journey and the many twists and turns that led her to where she is today. Now, she has created an innovative platform to help companies and their employees give to others. Here is her story. I urge you to pause and take a listen.

    About Pat Shea

Patricia Glaser Shea is a visionary leader who integrates a passion for social impact and business savvy to launch new ideas, build community and lead organizations into the future. Currently, she is President and CEO of Givful, a technology startup she co-founded that automates and simplifies workplace giving and volunteering. Named the 2020 Startup of the Year by the Nashville Technology Council, Givful provides employers and their associates with the ability to create a culture of giving, drive community impact, and launch corporate social responsibility initiatives. Before launching Givful, she was President and CEO of the YWCA of Nashville and Middle Tennessee.

In lasting, substantive ways, Pat has changed the conversation around domestic violence. She founded MEND, an initiative that recognizes men's responsibility in reducing gender violence. She established the YWCA Advocacy Committee, worked with legislators to strengthen domestic violence laws in Tennessee, launched Girls Inc. and re-opened Dress for Success — Nashville.

Continually looking for ways to empower women, Pat founded the Nashville Chapter of Women Presidents' Organization, an international organization of women business owners who have guided their businesses to success, and she has remained its Nashville Chair since 2010.

Before becoming a nonprofit leader, Shea was a thriving private-sector entrepreneur, creating and leading consulting organizations within HCA/Quorum and co-founding Echelon Health, a startup focused on women's health services.

Pat holds a degree in business from the University of Dayton and is a graduate of Leadership Nashville and Leadership Tennessee. She is a board member for Go West Creative, a founding director of Studio Bank and BrainTrust, a board member for the Center for Nonprofit Management, an advisory board member for Advancing Women In Nashville (AWIN), a member of International Women's Forum — Tennessee Chapter, and the recipient of numerous business and philanthropic awards.

226: Jeremy Segal—How to Share Your Wisdom To Influence Others Jul 27, 2020
    Show notes

Learn how to really, authentically, share your hidden wisdom

Jeremy Segal has a fascinating story to share. His life is a series of successes that follow no pattern or a straight line. He is never sure where he is heading but off he goes, and on the way, builds followers and fans...and businesses that are remarkable. In today's podcast, Jeremy tells you all about his journey and challenges you to rethink your own. Get ready to learn and grow!

    About Jeremy Segal

Jeremy struggled to speak in groups, on stage and online. Prior to launching his podcast, Why Influence, he had a personal Facebook page he very rarely used and a LinkedIn and that was it! He never shared ideas online or in groups, and definitely never spoke on stage. Then his wife gave him a gift — a membership in a local Toastmaster group. It took him a long time to cash it in, but after attending some local mastermind groups, he realized how much value he really had. He just needed to learn how to talk to people.

From his own life experiences, he saw how he could help entrepreneurs take leaps in mindsets and overcome major roadblocks. He realized that he's not alone, that there's a lot of hidden knowledge out there waiting to be shared with the world.

Hoping to inspire others, like himself, to share their hidden knowledge and wisdom, Jeremy started Why Influence. And, he wanted to surround himself with people who are authentically and vulnerably sharing. What might you have to share with the world?

You can contact Jeremy at LinkedIn, Twitter or his podcast.

225: Graham Boyd—Isn't It Time To See What We Are Ignoring? Jul 23, 2020
    Show notes

Hear how to transform yourself, your work, and our global challenges.

In this podcast, Graham Boyd and I talk about his passion for helping people see things in new ways. He asks big questions, like, Why is climate change not changing us and why aren't we addressing it? Why has the coronavirus immobilized some countries and their leadership, particularly the U.S., when China knew what to do from its earlier experience with SARS1 and could have shown others how to respond quickly and effectively? What is it about us humans that keeps us from seeing ourselves in healthy ways so we can help each other thrive? Listen in!

What if we could create an economy that works for the planet, for people, and for profit?

As Graham puts it so eloquently on his website, "We can rise, phoenix-like, from today's burning global challenges. All of us, and our children, can thrive in the coming decades, because we can build a regenerative global economy: an ecosystem of regenerative businesses."

Applying the expertise he has gathered across three careers (particle physicist, manager with Procter and Gamble, and serial startup founder), Graham is currently focused on bringing to reality his vision of helping improve people's lives. To help get out the message that there is a new way to build businesses and an economy that truly works for all people, Graham and co-author Jack Reardon have written a new book, "Picasso and Einstein: the Economy, Leadership and You," which you can read part of here.

About Graham Boyd, PhD: CEO & Founder, Evolutesix

A CEO, serial entrepreneur, particle physicist, disruptive innovator, author and speaker, Graham Boyd's passion is making a difference in the world by incubating and investing in adaptive, self-organizing, developmental, FairShares Commons companies. He recently transformed an international non-profit into three for-profits, and is now starting a seed-stage investment fund for ecosystems of regenerative startups. He also consults to multi-nationals and startups on harnessing conflict to drive their own regeneration. During his career, he has worked in the UK, China, Germany, Belgium, Japan, South Africa and Italy.

Born in a small town in Zimbabwe, Graham grew up as a white teenager in apartheid South Africa during the 1970s and 80s. He now says that his experiences during those years developed his belief that freedom is the strongest foundation we can build on, that we can be fully unique and together as one, and that hidden options can be found to resolve highly complex, nebulous and high-stakes challenges.

Graham recently gave an online talk to the RSA on creating an economy fit for a crisis, which you can watch here. You can contact Graham via Twitter, LinkedIn or his website graham-boyd.biz.

224: Todd Cherches—Want To Lead Better? You Must Visualize The New, Not Fear It Jul 20, 2020
    Show notes

Learn how to "see" where you want your team to go

At SAMC, we often work with people who need or want to change. That's our job as corporate anthropologists. And what we have learned over the years is that people hate to change unless they can literally see what it is they have to move toward. The human brain is designed to keep us in today's habits and not let us wander too far astray. But if you can see something new, you can begin to visualize how you can adapt it for yourself. In fact, without visualizing or experiencing the new, you don't know what it is. You flee it or fear it. You are never sure what "it" is. In this podcast, I bring to you Todd Cherches who has just published a new book about Visual Leadership. It's said, if you can see it you can be it. Listen in as Todd shows us why this is true.

Todd teaches you how to "see, feel and think" in new ways by visualizing what it is you are asking others to do

As you know, we preach the same thing. We need to let the eyes capture the new ideas and turn them into new stories, new visualizations, or we make up those new stories. And, we decide with the heart, so we have to feel the things someone is asking us to do. You will find that our conversation is very visual, which is why I include a video of our podcast. How else will you "see" what Todd wants you to experience.

    About Todd Cherches

Todd Cherches is the CEO and co-founder of BigBlueGumball, an NYC-based consulting firm specializing in leadership development, public speaking and executive coaching. He is a three-time award-winning Adjunct Professor of Leadership in the Human Capital Management master's program at NYU, and a lecturer on leadership at Columbia University. He is also a TEDx speaker ("The Power of Visual Thinking") and an author ("VisuaLeadership: Leveraging the Power of Visual Thinking in Leadership and in Life"). 223: Dr. Mandeep Rai—Do You Need A New Compass To Direct Your Values Jul 17, 2020
    Show notes

Hear how we're much more similar than different

I was so delighted to meet Dr. Mandeep Rai. She was referred to me by Sarah Wilson, a wonderful publicist. Dr. Rai has just completed her new book, "The Values Compass: What 101 Countries Teach Us About Purpose, Life, and Leadership," the culmination of her research in 101 countries around the world. She was fascinated by the similarities among very different people, as well as the unique ways in which they "live" their cultures. You will come away from our discussion with insights that can help you live a better life. Don't miss this very special interview!

Though individually unique, humans are one species spread across the globe

We are not 7.8 billion different ants. While we all have different values and beliefs, when you dig deeper you realize that we humans have, by and large, many of the same values and beliefs and many identical ways of doing things, regardless of whether we're in a cold climate or a hot one, in the rainforest or in the desert. We have kinfolk, we live in families of different types, we have children in similar if ways, and we create and share stories that help protect our values and beliefs.

This is what Dr. Rai learned on her golbal discovery journey, and in turn, she now is helping us learn more about ourselves as people. "The Values Compass" is a very timely book and a great one to share on our podcast.

The Dalai Lama writes this about Dr. Rai's work:

"The Values Compass takes us into the hearts, minds, and traditions of the cultures and people of the world. It demonstrates how interconnected we are and how the divisions that exist between us stem from acting with narrow self-interest rather than concern for the good of our human family. I hope that the book will contribute to making our world a happier place."

And we hope you have a wonderful time listening to Dr. Rai and me dig into her insights. Enjoy.

    About Dr. Mandeep Rai

Working with companies, institutions and individuals around the world, Dr. Mandeep Rai is a global authority on values. She has traveled to more than 150 countries and has reported as a broadcast journalist for the BBC World Service and Reuters, among others. She began her career in private banking at JPMorgan, and later worked for the United Nations, the European Commission and several grassroots NGOs before establishing the UAE's first media venture capital fund.

She studied philosophy, politics and economics, earning an MSc in development from the London School of Economics, an MBA from London Business School and a PhD in global values. She has also studied at MIT and Harvard Business School. You can contact Dr. Rai via her website.

221: Dr Elia Gourgouris and Kon Apostolopoulos—Don't Struggle: Here Are 7 Ways To Manage The Pandemic Jul 13, 2020
    Show notes

Learn how to navigate crises in an emotionally healthy way

I was so delighted to meet Dr. Elia Gourgouris and Konstantinos Apostolopoulos that I wanted to share them with you on our podcast. These are two amazing men. They are both of Greek backgrounds and, as you may know, I did my doctoral research on Greek immigrants and Greek culture. To say we had a lot in common is an understatement. What did we talk about? The pandemic, of course, and the new book they wrote in 45 days. That's right. They decided they had wisdom to share that could help guide people through the COVID-19 crisis, so they put their heads down and made it happen. There are so many great lessons here for all of us. Listen in!

"Points to Ponder", "Questions to Consider" and "Action Items"

In our podcast, Dr. Elia, Konstantinos (Kon) and I focused on their "guidebook," which sounds rather funny referring to such a horrible disease ravaging our country and the world. Called "7 Keys to Navigating a Crisis: A Practical Guide to Emotionally Dealing with Pandemics & Other Disasters," this book is essential reading for everyone if they are going to emerge emotionally sound from the chaos of this crisis. Dr. Elia has been speaking, virtually, to audiences around the globe about the powerful yet practical insights contained in the book. At the same time, Kon has been coaching individuals and groups to help them cope with the stress of remote work, as well as the isolation, fear and anxiety that come with the lack of certainty and clarity. Two men doing good work.

In our discussion, the three of us talk at length about how to minimize the negative impact of pandemics, natural disasters, financial meltdowns or any other major disruptions on our lives. Drawing from their personal and professional experiences, Dr. Elia and Kon share with us simple truths that have helped many of their clients thrive in the face of adversity. After listening to this podcast, you will have learned ways to take charge and lead yourself and others forward.

    About Dr. Elia and Kon

Dr. Elia Gourgouris is the Founder of The Happiness Center, a project of the Art of Living Foundation, an organization of leading experts in the field of positive psychology that has helped thousands of individuals achieve personal and professional happiness, success and wellness. 220: Rick Barton and Kit Lunney—Can We Bring Peace To The World Today? Jul 10, 2020
    Show notes

Hear how real peace can be accomplished in the world

I had the pleasure of meeting Ambassador Rick Barton when he was Assistant Secretary of the Bureau of Conflict and Stabilization Operations under Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. He joins us on the podcast today to share with you his perspective on how to bring peace to the world — not a simple subject. Joining him is his very successful wife, Kathryn (Kit) Lunney. Together they share their perspectives on their journeys throughout the world trying to understand conflicts and find ways to bring people together to end them. This is truly one you do not want to miss.

Peace starts with a willingness to understand both sides of a conflict

As Ambassador Barton tells us, the only way you will really know about conflict is to be there and see it with your own eyes, listen to people tell you their stories, and try to help them craft new stories that might reduce their pain, eleviate their hatred for others, and meliorate the horrifying results that come from the failure of peace. The work he describes in our podcast will help you realize how important it is for us all to work toward peace and find ways to stop the pain that separates us.

In his book, "Peace Works: America's Unifying Role in a Turbulent World," Ambassador Barton states that "leadership is most likely to be effective if there is a sincere effort to develop a common understanding of what is most important, a clear set of priority actions, an integrated team, independent measures of progress and tireless communication. Over the past twenty years, I worked in 40-plus countries, always finding local people and opportunities to catalyze progress. When you expand trust, seek innovation, and encourage ingenuity, risk-taking is rewarded."

About Rick Barton and Kit Lunney

Frederick D. (Rick) Barton currently teaches at Princeton University's Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs, where, with his wife, Kit Lunney, he serves as Co-Director of the Scholars in the Nation's Service Initiative (SINSI) and the Richard H. Ullman Fellowship. His 2018 book, "Peace Works: America's Unifying Role in a Turbulent World," uses a mix of stories, history and analysis to offer an affirmative approach to foreign affairs through concrete and attainable solutions.

Ambassador Barton was the U.S. ambassador to the UN's Economic and Social Council, the UN's Deputy High Commissioner for Refugees in Geneva, and the first Assistant Secretary of State for Conflict and Stabilization Operations. He founded USAID's (U.S. Agency for International Development) Office of Transition Initiatives and has led conflict management initiatives in over 40 crisis zones across the globe, including Haiti, Iraq, Nigeria, Burma, Pakistan and Turkey. His articles are published in numerous international outlets and he is a frequent guest on news broadcasts, ranging from NPR to all of the major networks. He now resides in Washington, D.C. with his wife of 44 years, Kit Lunney. You can contact Rick at barton@princeton.edu.

Kathryn R. (Kit) Lunney, with her husband, Ambassador Rick Barton, is Co-Director of the Scholars in the Nation's Service Initiative (SINSI) and the Richard H. Ullman Fellowship at Princeton University's Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs. Previously, Kit was the first state court planner for Maine's judicial system, an intergovernmental relations officer at the U.S. Department of Transportation, and deputy general counsel at the U.S. Department of Commerce.

As co-leader of Book Relief, First Book's response to the 2005 Gulf Coast hurricanes, Kit worked with the U.S. Department of Education, state and local governments, and hundreds of nonprofits and individuals to deliver 5 million new books to more than 2,200 groups and organizations in 20 states impacted by the storms. In the private sector, Lunney worked as counsel to two technology companies in Maine. Most recently, she was COO of and then a consultant to Smith Dawson & Andrews, a government and public affairs firm based in Washington, D.C. You can contact Kit at klunney@princeton.edu.

    Show notes

Learn how to be an effective transpersonal leader!

In our podcast with Danielle Grant, co-author of the book "Leading Beyond the Ego" with John Knights and Greg Young, you will learn a great deal about transpersonal leadership. This new approach takes us beyond the theories of Daniel Goleman on Emotional Intelligence and the power of focus which all great leaders possess. Transpersonal leaders add the essential dimension of spiritual intelligence. It is not enough to be smart with a great IQ or emotionally intelligent with a wonderful sense of empathy and EQ. Today's leader must focus on caring, ethical cultures and sustainability, as they lead others to exceptional performance. Listen in!

Think about your own leadership style through a fresh lens

Transpersonal leaders embrace the disruptors of the 21st century by thinking radically while being ethical and authentic...in other words, operating beyond the ego. According to today's guest Danielle, this will result in better performing, sustainable organizations that are more caring, productive and exciting places to work. Additionally, this kind of leadership will have a positive impact on the world in which we live.

    You will learn:

    • How transpersonal leaders operate beyond their egos, personal development and learning
    • To become a transpersonal leader, you must be fully aware of your values and how to adjust them

218: Melissa Davies—Aren't There Powerful Ways To Transform Your Organization? Jul 06, 2020
    Show notes

Hear how change can keep your business moving forward!

At times we are introduced to people by chance, only to find that they are amazing individuals whom we want to be part of our world. This was how I felt about Melissa Davies when we met, and why we wanted you to know more about her and the work she does to help others change. Founder of Wise Ways Consulting, a leadership development and executive coaching firm, Melissa helps clients become better leaders so they can build more productive and effective teams. Like me, Melissa is a culture change expert, so you can guess we had a lot to talk about!

Being willing to change is a key attribute of strong leaders

Melissa's world travels have taught her a great deal about cultural similarities and differences—those things we all share and that all organizations have in common, and those unique cultural customs that are trademarks of the "way we do it here."

Similar to what we do at SAMC, Melissa and her team work to bring about change in individuals and organizations. And what she has found over the years is that businesses' training and coaching needs are constantly evolving to reflect increasingly diverse workforces, remote offices and technology. This means that what she and her team are offering also need to be constantly changing and evolving.

3 areas of mutual interest which Melissa and I spoke about:

    1. How hard it is for people to see themselves honestly, and to understand how their organization is operating, truthfully. People see things with willful blindness, only noticing what fits their own perception of their realities.
    2. When people finally have an"aha" moment, they really can change.
    3. Methods and tools which can help companies make the needed transformations that keep them moving forward.

    About Melissa Davies

An internationally respected coach, trainer and project facilitator, Melissa Davies began her consulting career in her native Canada where she earned her honors degree from the University of Victoria in British Columbia. A career-long educator, Melissa has a unique ability to quickly establish rapport with audiences that allows her to effectively lead sessions in strategic planning, team effectiveness, mission development, organizational assessment, conflict resolution, mediation, change management and cultural development.

Melissa believes that instilling effective communication and leadership skills creates an appreciation of the diversity in ourselves and members of our society. You can contact her at her website, Wise Ways Consulting, LinkedIn or info@wisewaysconsulting.com.
