246: Carl Allen—Can Carl Allen Show You How To Build Your Wealth And Yourself? Dec 14, 2020
    Show notes

Hear how to create and grow your own wealth!

Carl Allen is our guest on our podcast today. He brings to you, our listeners, something quite special. He isn't just going to tell you about how he has made a fortune. Rather, he takes you through the steps of how you, yes you, can find a way to build wealth, too. Most of us dream about having the means to do what we want — when, where, how and with whom we want — but we don't have the first clue where to begin. Carl shows us the way!

Watch and listen to our podcast

Change your life, so you have a life

According to the 2016 HSBC Essence of Enterprise study, the average U.S. entrepreneur's net worth is $4 million and many run several businesses. Yet most wealth is rarely inherited. At least in America, it is typically earned by investing in yourself and venturing into entrepreneurship, a topic near and dear to us at SAMC. In 2012, Carl started Dealmaker Wealth Society to help aspiring entrepreneurs do just that — find a business they can create and grow, along with the wealth that comes with it.

There are 27 million entrepreneurs in the U.S. and both my husband, Andy Simon, and myself can tell you that it is neither easy nor simple but it can be done. In addition, we help others take their observations and turn them into innovations with Blue Ocean Strategy. You too can build your idea into a business that can "soar." Listen in today and see how.

    Meet Carl Allen

Carl Allen, entrepreneur, investor and corporate dealmaker with almost three decades of experience, is the founder and editor of Dealmaker Wealth Society. In charge of more than 330 transactions worth close to $48 billion, Carl has advised some of the world's largest corporations on investments and acquisitions, including Bank of America and Hewlett-Packard. One of the world's leading experts on buying and financing business acquisitions, Carl has invaluable insight to offer you about buying, growing and selling businesses. (He also became an Uber driver during this pandemic so he can deliver medicine to the elderly in his community. Quite a guy.)

Learn how to catapult growth by selling with noble purpose!

Lisa McLeod is a thought leader in the field of purpose-based, noble selling and the bestselling author of "Selling with Noble Purpose: How to Drive Revenue and Do Work That Makes You Proud." Lisa believes that sales is a noble profession and loves the opportunity to share her insights on how you, our listeners, can significantly benefit your bottom line by focusing on making a difference in the lives of your clients. Time to sell with noble purpose!

Watch and listen to our podcast

Some of the things we discussed that can apply to your business:

    • The secret reason most people hate their jobs
    • Why purpose-driven businesses have a financial advantage
    • The huge (hidden) mistake most organizations make
    • Why profit is a terrible goal for your team
    • How to reverse a sales decline
    • How to be a more inspiring leader

    About Lisa McLeod

A global expert on purpose-driven business and the bestselling author of "Selling with Noble Purpose: How to Drive Revenue and Do Work That Makes You Proud," as well as four other books, Lisa McLeod debunks the myth that money is the primary motivation for most employees. Instead, she helps leaders drive exponential revenue growth by increasing competitive differentiation and emotional engagement. She developed her Noble Purpose philosophy after her research revealed that salespeople who truly want to make a difference to their customers — who work with noble purpose — outsell those who focus only on their own targets and quotas.

A former Procter & Gamble Sales Leader, Lisa founded her own firm, McLeod & More, whose clients include Google, LinkedIn, Salesforce, Cisco, Roche, Volvo and Dave & Buster's and whose work has been featured in Forbes, The Wall Street Journal and NPR. She has keynoted in 25 countries, authored five books and over 2,000 articles, and has appeared on The Today Show and NBC Nightly News. Her firm's work has been featured in Forbes, The Wall Street Journal and NPR. You can connect with Lisa on LinkedIn, Twitter, Facebook and her website.

    Show notes

Learn an important key to growing your business!

As a corporate anthropologist who works with organizations that need or want to change, it was truly a pleasure to bring Bill Flynn onto our show. We talked about all the things you need to develop to thrive in these fast-changing times. As Bill tells us, thousands of businesses are started every day. Most die, a few thrive and the rest struggle to survive — mainly through enormous effort, force of will and luck. There is a better way to take the guesswork out of growth: focusing on the few areas that make all the difference. Listen in!

Watch and listen to our podcast The time to change is really now!

In this podcast, Bill and I discuss:

    • Are we trying to manage change in all the wrong ways? Is that why change management often doesn't work?
    • Are we doing our talent development correctly? Is it working?
    • How about "feedback?" Is it backfiring? Instead of inspiring people to do better, is it driving people to flee or fear you?
    • What about early stage businesses? Is yours one that will burst through and soar or flip/flop until you fail?

    Meet Bill Flynn

With more than 30 years' experience working for and advising hundreds of companies in a variety of market segments including speech recognition, e-commerce and affiliate marketing, Bill Flynn pivoted and is now a business growth coach. Before that, he oversaw five successful outcomes, two IPOs and seven acquisitions, including a successful turnaround during the 2008 financial crisis.

As a multi-certified growth coach, Bill is a Certified Predictive Index Partner, author and international speaker. He has a Certificate with Distinction in the Foundations of NeuroLeadership and a best-selling book, "Further, Faster: The Vital Few Steps that Take the Guesswork Out of Growth." 243: Lisa Linfield—Women, It Is Time To Get Your Money Madness Under Control Nov 23, 2020
    Show notes

Hear how to change your mindset and start living your Best Life

Lisa Linfeld is a special woman leader with a passion to teach women about how to rethink their lives by changing their mindset. In today's talk, she and I share with our On the Brink listeners how to "see, feel and think" in new ways by changing how you manage your mind. I first met Lisa when she interviewed me for her Working Women's Wealth podcast whose aim is to help women take control of their income, their wealth and their finances. Lisa thinks of this as a fight — a fight to get women the freedom they deserve. Our discussion is about how you can get "unstuck" from your mindset that is keeping you from living your "Best Life." Listen, learn, share.

Perhaps it is time for you to collaborate with your mind

In the podcast, Lisa and I share what we are learning from the neurosciences and social sciences about change and how to help people do it. One of the most important things is how the mind creates its visual image of reality. From that visualization, we literally only see what the brain wants us to see.

"Isn't it time for women to be as good as men at managing and growing their investments?"

I know that this sounds like sci-fi but your brain imagines not only what you have experienced but how you believe and how are not imagining your future you. For women, as Lisa knows so well, money has become something they know should be central to their concerns. Yet, all too often, it is a sidebar to other things they have to care about — their children, their homes, their jobs.

Lisa's book, "Deep Grooves," will help you:

    • Discover the Five Signposts to find your unique path to joy and purpose
    • Uncover your Real Reasons change isn't happening and put in place frameworks to change that actually work
    • Learn the brain science and the shortcuts to "re-wiring" your thinking
    • Understand how to make small daily changes that bring about your Best Life

242: Chris Diming—Isn't It Time For A Little Anthropology in Your Business? Nov 16, 2020
    Show notes

Hear how anthropology can help your staff return to the workplace

What an amazing podcast we have today. Listen in as three anthropologists talk about what the nature of work will be in the near future. With the disruptions brought by the pandemic, we must explore what remote work is being done, what cultures are emerging, and what tools and processes will be needed when we return to the workplace. The three great business anthropologists are Chris Diming, Lisa Galarneau and Racine Marcus Brown, who have each been working on the future of work from a number of perspectives. As you may know, I also am a business anthropologist, and one of the things we do is help you envision what the future of your workplace will become. The future is coming fast, so you better start getting ready for it now.

A couple of highlights from our discussion:

    • You must observe what your people are really doing.
    • Then help them reimagine what they will be doing and how you can support them.
    • Don't let the idea that things are going back to the way they were stop you from moving forward.
    • Remember, humans need to know what is coming next in order to live today.

These are great anthropologists with exceptional insights to share

I encourage you to let the methods, tools and approach of these anthropologists help you see, feel and think in new ways. You must adapt. It is the only way forward. Make it fun and your folks will enjoy the journey with you.

240: Jessica Weldon—How To Get More Women More Venture Capital Funding Nov 02, 2020
    Show notes

Hear how to change the way people see each other!

I have had the pleasure of working with Jessica Weldon at Washington University in St. Louis where she is Assistant Director of Programs at the Skandalaris Center for Interdisciplinary Innovation and Entrepreneurship. My husband Andy and I created the Simon Initiative for Entrepreneurship at the Skandalaris Center to help aspiring minority and women entrepreneurs take an idea and turn it into a successful innovation and a business that can thrive. Do you have a big idea that could maybe become the next blockbuster business? Don't miss this podcast!

    Women entrepreneurs not being heard

When we were discussing the challenges of women entrepreneurs, Jessica shared with me that she had observed a serious problem for women who were pitching their ideas to investors. As great as the ideas were, the women were not being heard. The investors had biases that influenced how they responded to the women presenting their ideas and seeking funding and support.

So what did she do? Design a program to help teach those investors how to listen to aspiring businesswomen in a more balanced and equitable way. Actually, her program should be taught to investors everywhere if women are ever going to grow themselves and their businesses, because it's not enough for women investors to try and find great women to invest in, like Fanta Kaba whom you will also hear from. We need men to do so, too. And we need to get rid of the implicit, outdated biases that dictate what women can or should be able to achieve.

Now is the time to change

I will put in a pitch here for a wonderful group of women's organizations I am involved with that helps women get the support they need and also that encourages corporations of all sizes to embrace the value of women in the C-suite (and not just in HR or marketing). Check out the Women's Business Collaborative and the nine major initiatives we are working hard to make happen, and soon.

    About Jessica Weldon

Jessica Weldon directs programming strategy for the Skandalaris Center for Interdisciplinary Innovation and Entrepreneurship at Washington University in St. Louis with a focus on diversity and inclusion. With a background in higher education, she earned her bachelor's in Communication from the University of Missouri and her master's in International Affairs from Washington University, being on campus in a variety of roles for 10+ years. She also is an advisor for Arts & Sciences students.

Jessica is particularly adept at building relationships with students and staff, as well as managing a multitude of details while simultaneously overseeing a busy front office. In addition, she has created and implemented numerous training and orientation programs for student workers. You can learn more about Jessica on LinkedIn.

    About Fanta Kaba

Currently a 2nd-year MBA student at the Olin Business School at Washington University in St. Louis, Fanta Kaba is the founder/owner of the skincare brand Golden Roots Essentials. Fanta, also known as Dabo, launched her company in 2019 after a self-discovery trip to her parent's native country, Guinea, where she learned about the benefits of raw shea butter and the many ways her African ancestors used it to maintain the health of their skin and hair — a great example of how creative, competitive, productive women can take an insight and an idea and create their own "Blue Ocean."

Fanta's story will inspire you. Growing up as a dark-skinned woman, she was often criticized for her skin complexion. At age nine, she was even told that if she did not bleach her skin, she would never get married. But instead of succumbing to the pressure to alter her skin, she developed a passion for self-care and skincare. She created Golden Roots Essentials to offer people not only a golden skincare routine but a golden life through self-care, skincare and culture. You can learn more about Fanta on LinkedIn and on her website.

239: Matthew Korban—Restore Balance To Your Life Without Compromise Oct 26, 2020
    Show notes

Learn how to find your "why," a key to happiness

As you know, for our On The Brink podcasts I go looking for people who have a different perspective, something in their own journey that's worth sharing so you can learn from them and begin to think about yourself with some new, fresh ideas. Such a person is Matthew Korban, a Certified Health and Life Coach. With our SAMC clients we often say, If you really want to change, have a crisis or create one. Well, Matthew found himself in the middle of a major crisis, a health crisis, and it ended up changing his life. Today he's healthy and happy, and spends his time teaching others how they can be too. Take a listen.

Tough childhood, then success and a near-death experience, then happiness

Born in Beirut, Lebanon during a war, Matthew spent the first 13 years of his life hiding from bombs. When he went to school, he would hide under the desks and hold his friend's hand and then run to the shelter. When he turned 13, he left Lebanon to be educated in Switzerland and France, then came to the U.S. for college. Once he started working, all he wanted to do was work hard at a career, have a family, and give his kids a decent life, not like the one he had had.

Soon he was working 15-hour days and weighed 350 pounds. He was leading a very unhealthy life but he was very successful. He was a CEO, sitting on boards and receiving awards. He was a star. But he couldn't walk.

When he went to his doctor, he was told that he had major inflammation that had contaminated his blood, spleen and intestines and that he had five months to live. "Just go be with your family for five months and then that's it," his doctor told him.

Growing up, Matthew used to practice martial arts. As he explains in our podcast, "My instructor used to say, If you fall down six times, make sure you stand up seven." Matthew remembered this as he was lying on a medical table, determined to live. He regained his strength, went back to school and got certified as a Health and Life Coach. Now he helps CEOs and top executives learn how to restore balance to their lives, to their relationships, to their health. "I'm enjoying this much more than I used to enjoy my previous work," he says. "I have much less money but I'm happier."

    Matthew's 3 step change process

Like us, Matthew is a culture change expert and shares with us his method of helping people let go of the old and embrace the new.

    1. First thing is admitting you need help. Everyone needs help. But it really takes courage and strength to ask for help. It doesn't mean you're weak, it means you're strong. We need to cheer each other on.

    2. The second step is uncovering your why. This is the most important thing. The first 15 ways you answer the question "Why?" are wrong. It takes 15 times to get it right. We sit in our comfort zone and when we ask why we're doing this, our answer is to defend ourselves and protect ourselves and shield ourselves, so we can keep sitting in our comfort zone.

    3. His coaching method called MOVE. People love their comfort zone. But by changing, it doesn't mean starting over. It's just taking your desire to have everything and turning it into something better, something where there is a purpose with an objective. Matthew starts with small habit changes to reshape the new, then steers people toward that new direction. And as we preach all the time, no one likes change!

    About Matthew Korban

Matthew Korban, Certified Health and Life Coach, has spent over 25 years connecting with people, first as an international marketing consultant and now as an impassioned coach who helps executives restore balance without compromising their careers, relationships or health. As an 8-figure business owner, Matthew understands the demands of business and the stress of building something from the ground up, which is why he is passionate about helping others achieve balance and be successful.

Matthew was at the top of his career when a near-death experience turned his life around. He now trains people from all walks of life to connect to their passion, reignite relationships and find balance in their lives. His wife, Marina, is a certified Yoga instructor. Matthew is a 5th Degree black belt martial artist and practices meditation and yoga daily.

238: Simon Roberts—Do You Know Why We Need The Power Of Not Thinking? Oct 19, 2020
    Show notes

Hear why anthropology should be part of your business plan!

It was an honor to speak with Simon Roberts on our On the Brink with Andi Simon podcast. Simon is a highly regarded business anthropologist with his firm Stripe Partners, serving clients across the globe with effective, innovative ethnographic and anthropological research. I am also a business (or corporate) anthropologist, and as we talked about both of our journeys, we realized how important it is for organizations of all sizes to understand how to step back and see themselves through a fresh lens — an anthropological one. Need a fresh insight? Do listen in.

You will only know what you don't know if you open your mind to what could be and let your experiences show you what is

During our discussion, Simon and I delved into his own journey both inside corporations, such as Intel, and as an entrepreneur setting up his own business. His career began with a PhD in anthropology focused on the satellite TV revolution in India in the mid-90s. He then started the UK's first dedicated ethnographic research company, Ideas Bazaar, before leading an R&D team at Intel's Digital Health Group. In 2013, he co-founded Stripe Partners, a strategy and innovation consultancy which supports teams working on near-term product launches and longer-range strategy engagements.

We laughed at how he was able to see things in ways that his clients were blocking, taking one client out camping because he wanted to expand into the camping industry. Or another who wanted to understand how broadband wireless could improve people's lives by making it easier to get things they needed.

From Simon's own observations, he has learned how our brains hate to see new things. He has also observed how our body and brain are so closely interwoven, but we don't think of them as one being.
