187: Teresa Douglas—Unleashing Those Secrets To Working Remotely Mar 31, 2020
    Show notes

Learn how to successfully adapt to working remotely!

In this time of uncertainty, with a global pandemic, what do you need to know from a podcast? Perhaps how to adapt to fast-changing times. We knew that this would be very timely when we recorded our interview with Teresa Douglas about how to work remotely and love it. As she tells us, "The world is now your office! You can work from home, from a coffee shop, or even from the gym — but how do you keep on task and stay motivated when you're on your own?" Let's learn.

    When you're connected but solo

Here are some of the keynotes we learned from Teresa, and know that we have been remotely working for 20 years now. It "ain't so hard" but it is very different. Even our clients are happily continuing their businesses during this crisis but missing things they never thought mattered to them.

Teresa's book, "Working Remotely: Secrets to Success for Employees on Distributed Teams," written with Holly Gordon and Mike Webber, sprang from their own need to better work remotely. They were facing serious levels of loneliness. People live in herds and like talking to other people. They also need to learn how to get things from others who are not working down the hall from them.

And, networking is more important than ever when you are working in your office of one. Managing the rest of the workplace — your spouse, your kids, your parents, the groceries — requires new skills, ones that you never thought you would need to develop. Teresa helps us do that.

For almost all of us today, those who are working remotely or are considering it, "Working Remotely" will serve as an invaluable guide and reference.

How to handle this new world of work? In this podcast we talk about:

    • Settling into Your New Environment
    • Dealing with Reactions of Friends and Family
    • Your Workspace, Your Tools, Your Physical Fitness
    • How to Set up Your Day
    • Working Effectively with Your Boss and Others
    • Running Virtual Meetings
    • Parenting in the Remote Workforce
    • Advancing Your Career

    About Teresa Douglas

Teresa has worked remotely since 2010 in a variety of management-level roles. She holds an MFA in Fiction from Sarah Lawrence College and an MBA from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Currently, she resides in Vancouver, British Columbia.

186: Peter Boumgarden—How To Build Awesome Teams In Today's Changing Times Mar 23, 2020
    Show notes

Hear innovative teambuilding strategies to get work done!

Peter and I know each other from our experiences working with a Michigan client and The Simon Initiative for Entrepreneurship at Washington University in St. Louis. Peter is a Professor of Practice of Strategy and Organizations at WashU's Olin Business School, and also the Faculty Director for the Center for Experiential Learning at Olin, a university center that runs for-profit and non-profit student-led strategic consulting engagement, both globally and around the St. Louis region. We were excited to talk on our podcast about data analytics for workers. If we can use data to select the best athletes, what can we learn about workers with the right data? Enjoy.

How do you build effective teams, in-office and remotely?

These are interesting times. About one-third of our workforce in the U.S. are freelancers. Many others who work for corporations are now able to work flexibly and remotely. The challenge then for both the organization and the employees is how to get the work done, particularly when it has to be done with others, either as part of a team or a project. As change experts, we at SAMC are always eager to hear how organizations are adapting to these fast-changing times, which is why we find Peter's insights so valuable and so timely.

    Some background on Peter

In addition to his roles at Washington University in St. Louis, Peter Boumgarden researches, consults and facilitates executive education in the private and non-profit sectors on topics tied to innovation, strategic design, organizational change and executive team development. Past clients include Herman Miller, Edward Jones, Charles Schwab, Oracle, Monsanto, BBVA, Enterprise Rent-A-Car and Methodist Health Care System, among others.

Peter's work centers on helping organizations develop processes for innovation, assisting leaders in defining and implementing sustainable strategies, and in establishing the role of leadership and organizational values in shaping such decisions.

184: Ivy Gordon—Providing A Powerful Voice To The Sexually Abused Mar 12, 2020
    Show notes

Hear about the long-awaited healing power of telling your story

I met Ivy Gordon through my work as a speaker with Vistage International. But today's podcast with her is less about her acumen as a business innovator or coach. Rather, she is on a mission to enable women to tell their stories about rape and abuse through her website, Unspoken Story. While she is a successful innovator and business leader, what she talks about here is the need to provide a voice for women who have been raped or assaulted—as she herself was, almost 50 years ago. It is this need to tell their story that is essential to free women from the chains that stay with them all through their lives. I was incredibly moved...you will be too. Please do listen in.

"There is no greater agony than bearing an untold story inside you," said Nobel prize winning writer Maya Angelou, also a survivor of childhood rape.

As Ivy writes on her website, "Our society is in a watershed moment—survivors of sexual assault are finding their voices and they are finding that at long last, their voices will be heard, respected and we hope, believed. For survivors who have carried their secrets for years, throughout marriages, child rearing and long careers without the benefit of a witness or a believer, the time has been especially long in coming."

"You are a whole and beautiful person despite what was done to you." -Yvette

Currently on Unspoken Story, five courageous women speak out, enduring the pain of reliving their story in the hope that by sharing their stories, other survivors will not feel so ashamed and alone. "We can't change what happened in the past, but by speaking out together we may be able to help each other heal and protect other people," Ivy states.

I urge you to go to the website and listen to these stories. Each one is different and very, very moving. Each survivor is paving the way for others to come forth and tell their own painful memories, allowing them to publicly acknowledge what happened to them and perhaps set them free.

    Background on Ivy

Ivy Gordon has been a business owner for over 40 years and more recently, has coached and consulted with over 100 Vistage International CEOs and executives. In 1976, she co-founded a computer software company which grew to become the industry leader in database and business management solutions, serving corporate, mid-market and non profit organizations. She also maintained an IT consulting practice for over two decades.

Now a highly accomplished photographer, Ivy hopes to add her verse to the chorus of photographers who believe that images are a powerful force, not only for personal growth but for social change. Through her own images and stories, she feels that she is fulfilling her life's purpose to "Help people see a bigger picture."

In 2016 and 2017, Ivy was named "Photographer of the Year" by PPSDC, the San Diego chapter of Professional Photographers of America. No surprise, as her photography is amazing. We love her images of Namibia, where we are going in May, 2020. Wherever she trains her lens, she tells the stories about the places and people that are her honor to witness and share with the world. You can see her extraordinary work here.

Ivy has a Masters degree in Organization Development from Pepperdine University and has been an ICF certified professional coach and certified integral coach. She holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in psychology from the State University of NY at Stony Brook.

182: Lisa Caputo—Smashing The Myths Of What Women Can Accomplish Mar 05, 2020
    Show notes

Hear how women can build better businesses that thrive!

I was hunting around for leading women in the financial services sector as I was writing my book about exceptional women smashing the myths of what women can and cannot do. Lisa Caputo's name came up and having been an ex-Citibanker for many years, I was interested in what she had done there for women. Lisa's entire career has been amazing, and as a powerful role model, her story should be told. I wanted to share her story with others, both men and women, to celebrate how women can build better, together. In our podcast, she talks about her own personal growth and those who helped her on her journey. Listen in; I know you'll learn so much.

This is about much more than just women and financial services

It is about how Lisa has been part of the transformation of this country over the past several decades, helping craft the voices of different presidents and presidential candidates, and helping us better understand what was happening at the time. Her role in industry, whether at Disney or Citi or Travelers, has been equally impressive as she has built businesses and helped change them.

    An early career in politics

As Lisa will share with you, after graduate school she was highly influenced by one of her professors and decided to look for a job in government, becoming the national issues press secretary during the 1988 Dukakis-Bentsen presidential campaign. Next, she became press secretary to US Senator Tim Wirth of Colorado and US Representative Bob Traxler of Michigan. At the 1992 Democratic National Convention, she ran Al Gore's media operations.

After working on the 1992 Clinton-Gore campaign, she was then asked to become Hillary Clinton's press secretary, at the age of 27. She oversaw the communications and media relations operations for the First Lady and the First Family, as well as serving as chief spokesperson and deputy assistant to President Bill Clinton. In 2008, she was a senior advisor to Hillary Clinton's presidential campaign, frequently being seen on CNN, MSNBC and other TV networks, providing analysis on the 2008 and 2016 presidential races.

Making her mark in the corporate world

After her time in politics, Lisa served as Vice President of Corporate Communications for the CBS Corporation, then joined Disney and then CitiBank, where she was Senior Managing Director of Business Operations and Planning in Citi's Global Consumer Group. She also served as Chief of Staff to the Global Consumer Group CEO, where she worked with senior managers to develop and implement strategies to expand the business and coordinate business activities across the Global Consumer Group, as well as across other Citi businesses. At the request of the Citi CEO, Lisa also developed a strategic plan and organizational structure for the Citi Foundation to focus the company's philanthropic giving.

    Women & Co.

When she first joined Citi, Lisa started Women & Co. which provides solutions to address the distinct financial needs of women in their various life stages. Under her leadership, Women & Co. grew from concept to startup to revenue generator, with its members now accounting for over $30 billion in assets under management at Citi.

A highly-recognized leader and role model for women

In addition, Lisa is a television commentator and public speaker on current events and politics, and a contributor to O Magazine. She has been an NBC and MSNBC political analyst for numerous presidential election cycles and has served as co-host of CNN's Crossfire and CNBC and MSNBC's Equal Time. Today, she is Executive Vice President and Chief Marketing and Communications Officer for The Travelers Companies, Inc.

Lisa has been named the AWNY Advertising Woman of the Year and one of Ad Age's Advertising Women to Watch. She is a NYWICI Matrix Winner for outstanding achievements in the communications industry and has been recognized as the Direct Marketing International Woman of the Year. She was selected as a Young Global Leader of The World Economic Forum and was named one of "New York's Rising Stars: 40 under 40" by Crain's New York Business. In 2016, Lisa was inducted into PRWeek's Hall of Fame in recognition of her "outstanding contribution to the

181: Valerio Pascotto and Amit Raikar—Yes Change Is Painful But It's Necessary! Mar 02, 2020
    Show notes

Learn how to see the future through a fresh lens !

As you might know, we are setting up leadership academies and personal development programs for our SAMC clients in all types of industries. As corporate anthropologists, this is very much in line with our misson of helping organizations and the people working within them to change. In today's podcast, I speak with two notable leaders in the field of leadership development—Valerio Pascotto and Amit Raikar—who share with us their brain-based approach to building better leaders within change management. I know you will learn so much here. I did!Today's companies are focusing on the future as well as profits

More and more, organizations are realizing that they have a much bigger role to play beyond pleasing shareholders with excellent profits. As Amit describes it, "B" corporations (focused on their third bottom line, namely helping their people, their profits and the planet) are shifting the way companies build teams and get people to work together to do better. In turn, this new type of business structure is causing global cultures to redefine what is success. Organizations are now building more inclusive and sustainable economies which will in turn affect the societies which they serve. As I've written about recently, this is a great example of seeing the future through a fresh lens.

Valerio talks about how he and Amit use the metaphor of a mirror to help individual clients and groups see themselves differently. Their company, IGEOS, teaches people how to lead, but like us, they believe that people have to see things differently if they are going to do things differently. In their workshops, they help leaders and employees shift their perspective so they can realize that "we" together is far more powerful than "I" alone.

Change is pain but is necessary to grow

It is interesting to me to listen to others who are doing similar things to what we do at SAMC but in different ways. I continuously learn from these conversations and realize that we humans, as complex as we are, hate to change. But, once we see that we can change, and that it is not as scary as we once thought, we embrace the new and allow ourselves to do things in new ways. We have to "see it," then "feel it" and then "think about it" so we know what it is we must "do." Rather exciting!

180: Jacqueline Kibler—Want To Grow? Take A Good Hard Look At Your Culture Feb 27, 2020
    Show notes

Learn how to change so you can really grow!

Jackie Kibler brings to our listeners a fresh perspective on how to run a business, just better. It is always a challenge for us to work with clients who have great ideas but are not great at growing them, managing the daily tasks, or developing the scalability that is needed. One of our favorite clients could have really used Jackie. Like those in my book, "On the Brink: A Fresh Lens to Take Your Business to New Heights," this client just didn't have the processes or perspective to see what was all around them. Jackie's business uses the methods of EOS (Entrepreneurial Operating System) to help companies obtain accountability from their staff, the communication needed to stay on strategy, and the focus required to grow. Maybe she can help you grow too?

Hear how EOS can help your business get the structure it needs to sustain growth

Growing up in an entrepreneurial family, Jackie early on developed a passion for supporting the growth of small to midsize companies and their owners. Over 25 years, she has worked in a variety of capacities, from managing a global sales team of 120 employees at a Fortune 500 company to creating and implementing a sales, recruiting and retention strategy for a small startup. Her ability to lead and drive behavioral change is based on coaching all levels of an organization to a process, then holding people accountable to the desired result of the process. Sounds a lot like what we do at SAMC, especially the focus on implementing a change process.

Along with a new strategy, you might need a new culture

Like Jackie, we work with you and your business to create processes that will move you in the right direction and get you un-stuck. That often means changing your culture, because very likely, it's your old culture that got you stuck in the first place. (Remember that saying, "culture eats strategy for lunch"? It's very true...the two are closely tied together.) In these fast-changing times, you really need to rethink what you're doing and how to best accelerate change. As culture change experts, we help our clients do just that.

    Some background on Jackie

In 2015, Jackie was recruited to Vistage Worldwide as the Executive of the Pacific Region where she coached 60 entrepreneurial CEOs in growing their businesses. It was in this role that she was introduced to EOS, and she quickly realized that this was a key factor in driving transformation in entrepreneurial companies.

In 2019, Jackie launched her own business and executive coaching firm, JW Kibler group, and became a Professional EOS Implementer.™ Today, she is passionate about streamlining sales and operational efficiencies so that entrepreneurs and leaders can take their organizations to the next level and thrive. Her focus is on building up people, creating healthy teams and managing operations to business goals.

Learn how you can really, really find your soul mate!

This is a podcast that everyone should pay attention to. Our guest is Clarissa Silva, the founder of Your Happiness Hypothesis (H20) Method. Based on an algorithm she created, this "first-ever disruptive relationship technique" helps people find their significant other, husband, wife, partner, through a methodology that really works. After trying e-Harmony and all the other dating apps, she took the traditional psychological and behavioral science models and re-engineered them to be 10 times more effective. And guess what? She met her husband! If you're like me, you'll find our conversation fascinating, and possibly, even the gateway to love and happiness.

    Successfully disrupted the matchmaking industry

Clarissa Silva revolutionized the way she approached love after examining the conventional theories and realizing that none of them had ever worked in her life. Thus began her journey into disruption.

In this podcast, we examine this topic from the perspective of the challenges facing men and women today. How can we find the right partner who is honest and authentic when so many potential companions lie about their age, are deceitful about their interests, and present a false illusion about themselves and what type of person they would like to meet? Clarissa was experiencing the same pain. So in true Blue Ocean fashion, she took her talent and brainpower and created a magical algorithm that really works. Bravo Clarissa!

He was very good at them but not very happy with them, so he moved to a small island off Scandinavia and became a newscaster. He then began to wonder about life and what he was seeing all around him: the extinction of animals, the troubles in our climate, and the difficulties people are having living healthy lives. Not afraid of change, he became a mindfulness coach and now helps others find their peacefulness, their humanness, and their personal center. I have gotten so much out of my conversations with Patrik, and you will too.

Taking time to quiet the mind

Patrick is very interested in how to help people have better lives, healthier lives. This means spending time quietly meditating and looking at themselves from the outside in. What's so interesting is that he's doing with individuals many of the same things we do with companies, at least with the individuals in those companies.

As I finished our podcast, I wondered if we should offer meditation and mindfulness sessions with our SAMC clients. They are all working hard and fast and it might be well worth it to pause and sit still for 10 minutes and just think about the moment. Maybe they would realize that all of those tensions and challenges are not about them. That they could be at peace and do their jobs in healthier ways. What kind of quiet mind could actually help us do better for our families, colleagues and clients?

Enjoy this podcast. And think about your own journey.

Is it time for you to take a little time just for you? Can you do it every day, perhaps in the middle of the day? Learn how important that quiet time is for your mental health, your sense of well-being and your understanding of who you are.
