    177: Ryan Cornell—Redefining A Business Model In A Powerful New Way Feb 17, 2020
    Show notes

Hear how fresh thinking can revolutionize an industry!

In case you haven't noticed, the world has become flat. In all kinds of ways, people are now connected across the globe, with significant and exciting implications. Ryan Cornell saw an opportunity to help companies, entrepreneurs, freelancers and even himself see this flat world with a fresh perspective. This led him to create RemoteProfessionals.com to help employers find trained, skilled staff abroad, particularly in the Philipines. In our podcast, Ryan and I will share how he started his company to help people in the US, the UK and Canada find excellent, English-speaking, "Americanized" workers in the Philipines. Listen in, I guarantee you'll learn a lot!

Great talent at a fraction of the cost

As Ryan explains in our conversation, RemoteProfessionals.com provides remote workers (or virtual employees) to companies throughout the US, UK and Canada. These workers are very talented and very capable, but since they're located in the Philippines, employers experience huge cost savings (40-50%) because of the drastic difference in cost of living.

    No need for office space

These days, work can really be done from anywhere in the world. Since most jobs are done with a computer and a telephone, many companies no longer need their employees to sit in offices on premises all day, every day. For decades, Fortune 500 companies have known this, with offices and employees all around the world working together as one team, from marketing people in London to finance people in Saudi Arabia to advertising people in New York. Ryan's company does virtually the same thing, except for small- and medium-size businesses, entrepreneurs and solopreneurs.

Call center personnel you can actually understand

In true Blue Ocean style, Ryan saw an opportunity, a niche that was not being filled, and jumped right in. Many staffing firms use workers for whom English is not their first language (often making them hard to understand for American, British and Canadian markets), but Ryan's employees come from the Philippines, which until 1946 was part of the United States. Many of them actually speak English better than Americans, Ryan says. Culturally, they're very similar to the US, following the same sports teams and watching the same movies and TV shows as we do. The main difference is that the country is very poor, but with an extremely bright, competent, highly-educated workforce.

Ryan took what was working for big business and applied it to small ones

What Ryan did was figure out how to make remote staffing work for small businesses so that they can capitalize on the same benefits as the big companies. There's a Blue Ocean! As he explains it: "The people we attract are the cream of the crop, they're the top performers in their industries and in their jobs, always looking to improve themselves and learn new things. In fact, we have a Continuous Learning program where employees set aside an hour each week for independent learning. They get to choose the topic—reading a publication in their industry, or testing or researching some new software or app that could make their employer more efficient—which benefits them AND the employers."

Matching the right people to the right job

Ryan's firm starts with a Needs Analysis, where they determine what a potential employer is looking for. Then they find the two or three people who best match the job description and the employer chooses the person who seems to be the best fit. Two additional things make Ryan's approach unique: onboarding and employer/employee support. "You're not just hiring the actual employee," he says. "You also get paired up with a Client Services Liaison who shadows your new employee extensively, especially in the beginning, and a technology specialist who helps set up your computer, software and communications systems so everything goes as smoothly as possible."

    About Ryan Cornell

As Founder & CEO of RemoteProfessionals.com, Ryan provides remote workers (or virtual employees) to companies in the US, UK and Canada. Ryan got the idea of a global workforce when he was one of the nation's top real estate agents and had a team of remote professionals to help handle the workload. Today, he enjoys changing people's lives: helping people in the Philippines get better jobs than they could locally, and helping small- and medium-size businesses take advantage of the global economy and global workforce in the way Fortune 500 companies have for years.

176: Michael Olenick—What You Need To Know About Blue Ocean Strategy® Feb 13, 2020
    Show notes

Learn how to go where the competition isn't!

For over a decade, Michael Olenick and I have worked together on Blue Ocean Strategy. Now, Michael is going to lead our Europe and the Middle East division. We have been getting a growing number of inquiries from all over the globe for Blue Ocean Strategy work, and Michael has been helping us guide these companies. It is now time for us to team up together and see how to help businesses everywhere discover the great value of seeing things through a Blue Ocean lens. We are thrilled to welcome Michael to our team here at SAMC, and to share with you our recent conversation. If you want to really understand how to grow and prosper, take a listen.

If you have not had the opportunity, listen to our On The Brink podcasts on Blue Ocean thinking and the process to do it. You'll learn how to "see" the amazing possibilities that might be all around you that can transform your business.

In this podcast, we wanted Michael to introduce you to his own perspective on Blue Ocean Strategy and the work he has done over almost 20 years. We talk about his work with Nintendo, and what that taught him about how its competitors, Microsoft and Sony, were focused on the young 8-year-old boy while Nintendo created a completely new market by thinking about everyone else.

    It's not about more, cheaper

As Michael works with clients and publishes case studies about Blue Ocean Strategy success stories, he, and I, become increasingly convinced that more of the same, cheaper, is a strategy for failure. It was what others have preached forever. I talk about this in depth in an article I wrote for Forbes, "Does Your Business Need A Boost?," which you can read here.

Clearly, in today's fast-changing, tech-driven world, people and their organizations are going to have to think about what could be, not what is already. Markets and the companies trying to serve them need value innovation, not value incrementalism. A little bit better product or service keeps you stuck in a red ocean with a lot of others trying to do the same thing.

So, as we Blue Ocean experts preach, stop going to your own trade shows. Go to different ones. Go exploring. Figure out unmet needs and nonusers who could use you. Then go get them. They might even be coming to you. Stop saying "We don't do that." Instead, try and figure out how you can do it. "The future is all around you, if only you can see it," as John Seely Brown tells us.

    Meet Michael Olenick

An Executive Fellow at the INSEAD Blue Ocean Strategy Institute in Fontainebleau, France, Dr. Michael Olenick has worked closely with Blue Ocean Strategy co-founders W. Chan Kim and Renée Mauborgne since 2001, before their groundbreaking book, "Blue Ocean Strategy" (which has sold 4 million copies to date), was published 2005. Back then, their novel approach to business growth consisted of a series of articles in Harvard Business Review. Michael learned about Blue Ocean Strategy (then called Value Innovation) as a product developer at Avery Dennison, brought it to GE, and has used it at countless companies ever since.

Today, Michael advises, consults, researches and teaches Blue Ocean Strategy throughout the world and has implemented its business strategy for companies ranging from startups to Fortune 100s. He works with senior executives from a wide array of companies and organizations to develop and/or study strategy, focusing particularly on technology, disruption, non-disruption and the differences and similarities between B2B and B2C businesses.

Michael's research has been cited in leading business publications, including The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, The Washington Post and Bloomberg. In addition, the U.S. Congress and New York Federal Reserve have collaborated with him and relied on his research when making policy.

Currently, Michael's research is taught by leading business schools, including Harvard Business School, Stanford Graduate School of Business, the Wharton School, University of Chicago and many others. Multiple cases are bestsellers at Harvard Business Review/Harvard Business School Publishing, including:

175: Diana Wu David—Future Proof You and Your Work Feb 10, 2020
    Show notes

Learn how to identify your own path to the future!

This was a very timely interview with Diana Wu David. Diana is the author of the new book, "Future Proof: Reinventing Work in the Age of Acceleration." Our discussion was all about what she is seeing in the business world as technology, work and life intersect, pushing our lives in entirely new directions. You will also hear about her own research among companies, large and small, as she works with their leadership, their boards and their staff to enable them to adapt to the fast pace of change. As you know, at SAMC we're all about change! Great tools here...enjoy.

What do you have to do to change?

According to Diana, in order to change, we need to adopt more agile mindsets and practices so we can become successful agents of our own lives, not just our careers. She says that today's blend of a person's at-work and out-work life is creating new lives for us all. And new, younger generations are redefining their relationships to those they work with and the organizations they work in, which is adding another layer of change to the mix. Change is pain but we must do it!

Can you "see" where you are going?

Diana was in Hong Kong when we did our podcast but it was like we were sitting next to each other. We both work with clients globally, so this was very natural. In fact, these days there really are few boundaries except of our own making. In this podcast, you'll learn more how to eliminate those boundaries that are holding you back.

As a futurist, and a realist too, Diana's forte is helping people see what is happening all around them. Through her Future Proof Lab, participants are shown how to identify their own path to the future, something we all need to think about as many of us will live to 100, well past that retirement day.

    Some background on Diana

An adjunct professor of leadership at Columbia Business School's EMBA Global Asia, author and a former Financial Times executive, Diana Wu David now works with global leaders to help them make sense of mega trends and take advantage of disruption. Her clients have included Credit Suisse, The Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group, Wharf Hotel Management Group, Expedia, the World Bank, Asia Development Bank and KPMG. In addition, she began her career and leadership education as an assistant to former Secretary of State Henry Kissinger.

Her company, Future Proof Labs (formerly Sarana Labs), provides education to help people make sense of disruption from senior executives via the Future Proof Course to young people preparing for a bright future via initiatives like The Opportunity Project. Past projects include gaming for good, robotics education, a global online training platform, and a social impact fund that trains women to invest via peer-to-peer learning and teamwork.

You can read more of Diana's insights on her LinkedIn and on her blog. You can also listen to her TEDx talk, The Difference Between Running and Running Free.

174: Stefan Pagacik—What Do Your Culture And Values Say About You? Feb 06, 2020
    Show notes

Learn how to arm your employees with a sense of purpose!

Stefan and I had one of those great podcast discussions that took us into the work he is doing to get people to pay attention to our sustainability challenges. Unless we stop what we are doing to our environment, we won't have much left of the earth to live on, he firmly believes. But what I most enjoyed about our talk was learning how Stefan is mobilizing communities to change. As culture change experts, that's what we're all about at SAMC: helping organizations and the individuals within them change. Want or need to change? Stefan teaches us how to do it, now.

    Stefan's journey

When friends ask Stefan Pagacik to describe what he does, it often leads to quizzical looks. "My life and career have not followed the traditional paths that most choose, and that is in large measure because of my entrepreneurial roots," he says. His grandfather came to America from Soviet Armenia and started a grocery business, competing against the likes of Star Market and Stop 'n Shop and doing very well. The best definition he can offer is that ideas and innovative solutions are critical for his happiness. "I embrace taking risks, stumbling and trying again, as well as an otherworldly persistence to get answers that can solve a complex problem or challenge," he explains. "I love opening doors to opportunities and highly motivated leaders who combine integrity with innovative thinking. Original Thinking is in my DNA."

    A multi-faceted path

Stefan's career has spanned several industries and roles, most recently as co-founder of AI4Impact, an artificial intelligence/machine learning firm focused on impact and sustainability. Previously, he built two impact-themed cloud and mobile platforms for retail and institutional investors interested in aligning their values and criteria with their portfolios. His prior entrepreneurial experience involved starting the Regional Technology Development Center of Cape Cod, a marine science accelerator in Southeastern Massachusetts which commercialized scientific developments in partnership with the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute and the Marine Biological Laboratory.

In addition, Stefan built a model for an energy transition solution from fossil fuels to biofuels for the government of Chile, and designed a social enterprise plan for the city of Detroit, aligning entrepreneurs and city agencies to stimulate business opportunities for blighted areas of the city, including a sustainable food corridor.

A highly sought-after speaker and strategic business advisor, Stefan helps corporate leaders tie mission and vision statements to strategic initiatives for employee recruitment/retention and customer development. 173: Anthony Willoughby—How to Lead Your Organization With Trust And Courage Feb 03, 2020
    Show notes

Learn how a nomadic mindset helps you see where you are going!

I was introduced to Anthony Willoughby by Diana Wu David after our podcast interview. She said, "You just must meet Anthony. He will take you on his adventures around the world where people learn to build their trust and their abilities to work together." So I did! As you will hear, Anthony grew up in Africa, wandered the world, and much like an anthropologist, learned how to observe, listen and learn from different cultures, particularly nomadic tribes. This led him to found the Nomadic School of Business, whose concept of a nomadic mindset helps leaders and their teams achieve clarity, purpose and agility. There's so much to apply to your own teams...enjoy.

Do you and your team understand and embrace change and disruption?

Have you created a culture that welcomes change? Can you engage, unite and empower a diverse collection of individuals? If you answered no to some or all of these, you might really benefit from watching and listening to my conversation with Anthony.

Your big takeaways are going to come from learning about the power of stepping out of your comfort zone and building real trust with others. You'll hear how Anthony has worked with large organizations, such as the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation at the Great Wall of China, as well as small groups, most notably the Maasai in Kenya. But regardless of their size or scope, their interests or challenges, Anthony and his Nomadic School of Business offers a transformative experience for the individuals who immerse themselves in one of his programs.

Check out the video of our podcast here:

Offering a fresh worldview, a new perspective

What is unique about Anthony's approach to corporate team-building is the way he creates learning adventures where leaders can open their minds to each other, building trust and clarity in their organizations. These adventures are built around a team's territory mapping experience and a leadership trust wheel. Together, these two processes enable team members to understand, own and assume greater responsibility for the delivery of critical strategic objectives of their organization.

As I have been to Kenya, and the Great Wall of China, it was easy for me to see the power of these venues to take people away from "the way we always do it" syndrome and open their minds to what "we could do." No, I have not gone on a nomadic experience with Anthony — yet — but I might indeed do some wandering with him soon.

The photos below capture the territory mapping exercise by the Maasai and participants in Anthony's Nomadic School of Business.

    What is a nomadic mindset?

    1. Recognize and accept that your environment is changing
    2. Identify as an agile group that moves toward opportunity
    3. Harness the wisdom of your community to make decisions

One thought I want to leave you with

This New Guinea chief (at left) had an amazing headdress. When Anthony asked him why it had so many feathers, he said, "To give them away." In that moment, Anthony learned that the power of a chief is in giving away his wealth, not accumulating it. Now more than ever, there is so much to learn from other cultures about how to build communities where trust unites us, and where sharing creates benefits beyond what any of us can get on our own.

    Get to know Anthony Willoughby

Raised in Africa and schooled in the UK and the US, Anthony was 22 when he bought a one-way ticket on the Trans-Siberian Express to Japan in search of inspiration, adventure and opportunities. In 1982 he took his first journey to the highlands of Papua New Guinea to stay with the Chimbu Tribe. There, he discovered how important a territory is to a tribe and its leaders, and how a map can provide power and clarity to different cultures and debates. It was during this expedition that he encountered a persistent complainer, which led him to establish his "I Will Not Complain" team-building and leadership development programs in Japan in 1989 and in China in 1992.

In the years since, Anthony has developed a visualizing process called "Territory Mapping," inspired by conversations with tribal chiefs in remote villages in Papua New Guinea and Kenya. This process has been described as a method that " enables you to crash through civilization and see where you are and where you are going with new clarity."

Anthony has ridden paddle steamers down the Nile, was briefly a bullfighter, and has scaled some of the world's biggest peaks, such as China's 7,546-meter Mount Mustagh Ata, without porters or oxygen. Now based in the UK, he makes regular trips to Africa and Europe, delivering programs and expeditions for individuals, and spreading the word about the Nomadic School of Business. His clients have included AIA, Ogilvy, AXA, Mars, Qatar Airways, IBM, Ferrari, Dyson, London Business School, Chubb, and Google.

172: Gina Rubel: Do People Really See You The Way You Think They Do? Jan 30, 2020
    Show notes

Learn how to create positive messaging about your company!

In today's podcast, I speak with attorney and PR expert Gina Rubel about how she successfully bridges these two arenas, law and public relations, and helps her clients do so as well. As the founder and CEO of Furia Rubel Communications, she helps lawyers craft better professional images and manage them effectively. As her website explains, "Gina didn't discover legal communications and marketing — she just repositioned it for a new century." I urge to listen carefully to our conversation because this is relevant to you, regardless of your profession. Enjoy.

    How are you perceived?

Today more than ever, companies and individuals need to understand how they are perceived by others and to be strategic about reputation management. This awareness applies to all forms of communication, from traditional public relations to internal employee communications to social media engagement.

During our talk, Gina and I focus on the role of management. There's a great tie in here to anthropology, which of course is my primary interest. In order for businesses to thrive and grow, they need to understand how they are perceived by their audiences. It's not just how they think they're perceived, it's how they actually are perceived. To understand others' perceptions, one has to research, listen and observe, not assume what others think. What do they really think? What story do they tell others about you? It's absolutely crucial that you understand this.

    Key takeaways

    • Perception is 9/10th of the truth. You need to own how you're perceived in every channel you can own.
    • It takes an ongoing, proactive effort to create positive messaging. This can help mitigate issues if/when they arise.
    • You should read the book "The Four Agreements" and apply its teachings to your business and your life. If you live The Four Agreements, you will be exactly the person you want others to perceive you to be.

    Background on Gina Rubel

Following a successful career in PR, Gina changed course and went to law school, finding that the practice of law is much like public relations: you're communicating a message to a target audience to elicit a desired response. After practicing law as a personal injury litigator and a judicial law clerk on national toxic tort matters and high-profile death penalty cases, Gina found her calling in legal marketing and public relations. As you will hear, she never looked back.

Gina is also an author of the book "Everyday Public Relations for Lawyers," now in its second printing. While the examples in the book are geared towards lawyers and legal marketers, the strategy and tactics are relevant to all professionals. Attorneyatwork has these words of praise: "Written for lawyers and legal marketers, Rubel's no-nonsense guide delivers hands-on advice on all critical aspects of public relations — from the dos and don'ts of media relations to controlling the message to harnessing the power of the internet and social media."

Here are just a few of Gina's many accolades: 2019 and 2018 Lawdragon Global 100 Leading Consultants and Strategists to the Legal Profession, #1 The Legal Intelligencer Best of Legal Marketing and Public Relations, The Legal Times Best of Social Media N.J. Law Journal Legal Marketing and PR, and National Law Journal Best of Legal Marketing and Branding.

    171: Michael Wigge—Nothing Is Impossible! Jan 27, 2020
    Show notes

Learn how to overcome obstacles, tackle challenges and succeed!

You might wonder why we invited German comedian, travel writer, television producer and soft skill trainer Michael Wigge to speak to our listeners about setting a record for the longest donkey ride in music television history, dressed as Henry VIII. Or about the time he crossed Germany on a Mibo Mastr scooter, covering 2,500 kilometers (1553 miles) in 80 days. Or how he's travelled the world for free, several times, and written two books about it. This is one guy who knows how to overcome challenges, find creative solutions, and persevere. And we can learn to do it too!

One man, 150 days, 11 countries, no money!

Michael Wigge had traveled to many countries before, but one day, he decided to make it more challenging: he would travel 25,000 miles around the world by foot, bus, train, ship and plane and not spend a dime of his own money. The journey was full of challenges: What would he eat? Where would he sleep? How would he get from place to place? In spite of all the obstacles, Michael always came up with creative solutions, and after 150 days, reached his destination. (Elite World Records named him the First Person to Travel the World Penniless). Now he wants to share what he learned with us.

Helping others become confident, resilient leaders

These days, Michael's real passion is helping others realize that what seems absurd or impossible just requires us to see things through a fresh lens. Through his coaching and workshops, he's doing just that.

Maybe you're afraid of rejection. How do you push the fear away and become comfortable with who you are and how others see you? Ask Michael! Or, perhaps your organization needs to change, and in order to do this, your staff needs to let go of some things and add some others. Michael can show them how to do this!

Listen in, learn how to see your challenges in a new way, and enjoy the ride.

Hear how women-owned businesses are kicking it!

Today's podcast is all about a topic that we here at SAMC are working on ourselves: how to help women create and grow their businesses. My conversation with Alicia Robb was wonderful. Alicia has spent ten years as a senior fellow at the Kaufman Foundation in St. Louis studying entrepreneurship and particularly women entrepreneurs. You can read some of her Google Scholars articles here. Of particular interest to me, and perhaps to you as well, is her work on minority-owned business performance and the impact of gender differences on business results. So can women start and run hugely successful businesses? You bet. Listen in and learn how.

One of the critical factors influencing business success for women, no matter if the company is minority-owned or not, is the lack of capital and access to that capital. This has become Alicia Robb's focus. Founder and chief executive officer of Next Wave Impact, a global fund providing early-stage financing and advising to young firms. The difference? Next Wave Impact has 99 women investors, 25 of them women of color, and it is led by an investment committee of ten women. So yes, it can be done.

Women have become the driving machine for the American economy but it continues to be an uphill climb

Between 2017 and 2018, there were over 1800 new women-owned businesses added to the American economy per day. That's more than twice the pre-2007 time period and the 2007-2012 recession and recovery period.

In many cases, these female start-up founders had just had enough with the corporate workplace and were ready to strike out on their own. These "necessity entrepreneurs" tend to have smaller businesses and their leaders are focused on making a living. This is quite different from "opportunity entrepreneurs" who see an unmet need (à la Blue Ocean Strategy®), have an idea of how to meet that need and then create a new market space around it.

With the increasing wealth gap in this country and the growing number of women who are the sole or co-bread winners in their families, the fact that women now own 40% of U.S. businesses should make us pause and figure out ways to help them thrive in their quest to achieve success. (This is what our Simon Initiative is all about, which you can read about here.)

    169: Elisa Spain—How To Create A Post-Career Life With Meaning Jan 20, 2020
    Show notes

Learn how to re-think your life looking forward!

I have known Elisa Spain for a long time. Having presented to a number of her Vistage groups, I'm deeply familiar with her particularly effective approach to helping people and their organizations change. As she has watched her members craft the next stages in their careers—selling their businesses, retiring from leadership positions, coping with transitions—she has changed too, shifting her focus to help them see their lives through a fresh lens. Her approach, grounded in successful executive coaching, leadership development and even from her own life experiences, has worked exceptionally well. Can others benefit from her insights? Definitely! In this podcast, you'll hear more about her approach, how it works, and how it might work for you.

Listen in to my conversation with Elisa and hopefully you'll begin to see how her ideas could help you re-think your own life, leading up to or after that great (anticipated? dreaded?) "retirement" day.

In these modern times, we have added almost two decades to our lives. But, we have not done such a good job of planning for those extra twenty years. And they come and go swiftly. Don't waste them.

The three most important forces facing people as they look forward in their lives:

    1. A lack of focus. They used to have a daily routine and often now they don't.

    2. A lack of purpose. Their careers and families previously defined their purpose in life. Without work and with their children now grown with lives of their own, how can they re-craft a purpose and give their days meaning?

    3. A lack of community. We are humans and thrive with others around us. When we leave the workplace full of people who helped us define ourselves and shared our duties and our accomplishments, we flounder looking for others who we can likewise share the same experiences and stories. Sitting in Starbucks or McDonalds looking for someone to chat with just isn't the same.

168: Amanda Zuckerman—How To Turn A Big Idea Into A Huge Blue Ocean Success! Jan 16, 2020
    Show notes

If you can dream it, you can do it!

We met Amanda Zuckerman when she spoke at the HER Summit (Helping Entrepreneurs Rise) at Washington University this past October. Amanda is a Wash U alumna who saw an unmet need and turned it into a great business, dormify.com, that has opened an entirely new market space—very Blue Ocean style. Named one of Forbes 30 Under 30 in 2018, Amanda is a perfect example of how you, yes you, can come up with a new way to fulfill an unmet need, turn that idea into a company, and watch it take off. Want to learn how she did it? Listen in, she tells us! Enjoy.

If you can't find it, create it

While shopping for her freshman year of college, Amanda and her mom, Karen, were on the hunt for fun, fashionable dorm decor. But no matter how hard they looked online and in stores, they couldn't find one place that had everything they needed: stylish bedding, lighting, posters and accesories designed for the limited dimensions of a dorm room. So they created it. Dormify was born!

Dormify: your ultimate small space decorating destination

What started out as a dorm-focused blog and brand ambassador community has in seven short years become a multi-million-dollar success with triple-digit yearly revenue growth. (Wow, that Washington University double major in Graphic Design and Marketing came in handy big time!)

Post-college, Amanda took the feedback from her peers via her blog and her personal experience and with the help of her entrepreneurial mom, evolved Dormify into what it is today, a hugely successful, direct-to-consumer, one-stop-shop offering everything students need to beautifully style their small dorm space with just a few clicks.

How Amanda did it and how you can do it too

In our podcast, we talk with Amanda about the path she took, the hurdles she faced, and how others could learn from her story about how to take their own ideas and turn them into great, big innovative businesses.
