157: Jodi Daniels—How Private Is Your Private Information, Really? Oct 21, 2019
    Show notes

Learn why data privacy is a human right you deserve!

Do you ever worry about what personal information you are giving to a website you are buying something from? How is it using that data? What did Cambridge Analytica do with your personal Facebook data to harvest your information and use it for political campaign purposes in 2016? Did it matter to you? Should it? That was even more alarming, and more dangerous, than hackers breaking into Target's data base and stealing credit card information. Boy, the times, they are a' changing. Are you? My guest today is Jodi Daniels, a privacy laws guru who can help us sort all of this out and show us how to be safer. I guarantee, you don't want to miss this!

Your data privacy is Jodi's top concern

After a successful corporate career with such high-profile companies as Deloitte, The Home Depot, Cox Enterprises and Bank of America, Jodi founded Red Clover Advisors, a boutique privacy consulting agency. Working with organizations across industries, Jodi and her team of experts help business leaders better understand and stay compliant with ever-changing regulations in privacy, customer data collection and its use, digital governance and online data strategy.

What sets Jodi apart? As an entrepreneur, like us at SAMC, she understands firsthand the challenges of building and managing a business or brand, and how data privacy is integral to its success or failure. When it comes to compliance, her motto is, "You don't know what you don't know." She then delivers on this statement by making privacy easy to understand by breaking it down into measurable steps, using plain language her clients can relate to. It's a whole new way of working with data!

    About Jodi Daniels

Since launching Red Clover Advisors in 2017, Jodi Daniels has helped hundreds of companies create privacy programs, achieve GDPR, CCPA and US privacy law compliance, and establish a secure online data strategy their customers can count on. As a dedicated privacy consultant, she custom-designs compliance programs to fit the specific needs of each business. But most importantly, Jodi passionately supports the idea that privacy is more than just compliance and concern over fines. It's a human right we all deserve, and she has made it her mission to help businesses build trust and transparency with this core value at its foundation.

Jodi holds a Masters of Business Administration and a Bachelor of Business Administration with a concentration in Accounting from Emory University's Goizueta Business School.

You can reach Jodi at jodi@redcloveradvisors.com and learn more about her at www.redcloveradvisors.com. And please visit Jodi's Welcome page!

156: Sam Radocchia—Let's Become Familiar With The Unfamiliar Oct 14, 2019
    Show notes

Learn about the emerging technologies that are coming at us, fast!

Samantha Radocchia, or "Sam Rad" for short, is an entrepreneur, speaker, author, futurist and emerging tech advocate who combines the mindsets of an anthropologist and a technologist—which is why I was so excited to have her join me on our podcast. Did you know that On The Brink With Andi Simon is ranked in the top 9 futurist podcasts for 2019? (You can read about it on LinkedIn.) This led us to ask, What is a futurist?, which led us to Sam Rad, a perfect guest for our program. Sam did a podcast with me back in 2018 on blockchain which was shared widely. In this podcast, we focus on her new book, "Bitcoin Pizza: A No-Bullshit Guide to Blockchain," as well as what has been happening with blockchain in the year since we last spoke. Don't miss it!

    Why Bitcoin Pizza?

You have to listen to Sam tell the story about the "10,000-bitcoin pizza" which was the start of using bitcoin for "general" purchases. What has now become an origin myth of great proportions goes like this: On May 22, 2010, now known as Bitcoin Pizza Day, Laszlo Hanyecz offered to pay 10,000 bitcoins for two delivered Papa John's pizzas. A British man took up Hanyecz's offer and bought the two pizzas for him in exchange for the 10,000 Bitcoins. This set in motion something that few saw coming: a world-wide movement to change much of what we thought was "the way we do things." By the way, those original Papa John's pizzas are now worth over $80 million.

What's so exciting is hear Sam talk about her vision for blockchain

Blockchain is more than a bitcoin currency. To Sam, it's something much broader and transformational. As she says in her new book: "The way I see it, blockchain isn't just a technology. It's a technological manifestation of a social paradigm shift from centralized to decentralized, from siloed to open, from controlled to self-enforcing."

Today, blockchain is tackling a huge array of everyday tasks and challenges. If you're not familiar with blockchain, it's a safe, secure system that allows us to more easily manage our business and personal lives. Whether it's overseeing your banking, paying your taxes, booking vacations, eliminating property title insurance, producing safer medications, tagging and tracking diamonds, or making sure Wal-Mart's food is safe for its customers, blockchain is not just another way to do things. According to Sam, it is going to become the best way. And, very soon.

In previous On The Brink podcasts, we've heard similar prophecies from Marton Ven when he spoke about blockchain and the food system, and Jared Tate when he shared his thoughts on the growth of Digibyte in two podcasts, the first in June 2018 and the second in March 2019.

As you've probably guessed by now, the future is coming at us fast. Are you ready?

Samantha Radocchia: entrepreneur, author, speaker, futurist

A reformed gamer, "Sam Rad" started studying virtual currencies in 2009 while writing her anthropology thesis on currency exchanges in the virtual world. Since then, she has founded three companies, holds several patents, and was an early outspoken voice in blockchain as the co-founder of Chronicled, an enterprise blockchain company focused on supply chain. She now consults executives, trade associations, governments and investors on emerging technology trends.

In addition to emerging technology, Sam is deeply passionate about Future of Work, Future of Production, Future of Community and the sustainability of business. She speaks worldwide on organizational culture and theory, particularly as we shift to globally distributed and remote workforces. Her lectures on risk, emotional intelligence and intuition have been featured by such globally recognized universities as MIT, Columbia and UCL.

Two years ago, Sam was named to the 2017 Forbes 30 Under 30 List for Enterprise Technology. She's also a competitive skydiver, having accumulated over 700 jumps. Her blog, "Radical Next Ideas," is well worth checking out.

155: Byron Reese—A Futurist Reveals How Technology Is Transforming Our Entire Society Oct 07, 2019
    Show notes

Learn about the future of your work and your life!

Futurist-technologist-entrepreneur Byron Reese is a lover of technology and history, which may sound strange. But he truly appreciates how the past and the future are deeply connected, and that if we don't look back, we will have a much harder time appreciating where we are going as we move forward, ever faster and faster...something he examines in his new book, "The Fourth Age: Smart Robots, Conscious Computers & The Future of Humanity." Listen, learn, share! Byron shares how he became inspired by the future

The creator of Star Trek, Gene Roddenberry, said that in the future, "There would be no hunger, there would be no greed, and all the children will know how to read." This quote gnawed at Byron, and he wondered if it was true. Or did it just sound true because it rhymed? He decided to try to figure it out, which is how he became a futurist.

"The biggest problems of tomorrow will not be a lack of jobs but a shortage of humans to take advantage of all of the opportunities technology will offer." --Byron

I know you will love our conversation and perhaps will begin to wonder yourself about what the future holds for us all. What's coming next? With AI, machine learning, robots, autonomous vehicles, blockchain, Internet of Things, and all the changes coming in the way the different generations and cultures think, we have a lot to enjoy—if you, like me, enjoy change and helping others embrace it. And if you do not like change, hang on! You may be forced to adapt in the years to come, like it or not.

    Some background on Byron

For 20 years, Byron Reese has been building and running internet and software companies. He has obtained or has pending patents in disciplines as varied as crowdsourcing, content creation and psychographics. Of the five companies he either started or joined early, two went public, two were sold, and one resulted in a merger.

Credited with "quietly pioneering a new breed of media company," Reese is the former CEO of Hot Data (sold to Pitney Bowes) as well as PageWise (sold to Demand Media). He is currently the CEO & publisher of Gigaom.

Byron currently hosts the Voices in AI podcast, gives Talks on Tomorrow and has a highly informative and thought-provoking blog. He's also given a TEDx Talk ("Achieving Greatness Is A Choice") which you can access here. You can follow Byron on Twitter at @byronreese.

154: Benjamin Mathes—Recovering The Lost Art Of Listening Sep 30, 2019
    Show notes

Learn what the incredible power of listening can do!

I received a copy of Benjamin Mathes' book, "Short Paragraphs on Listening," as a gift after a speech I gave recently in Los Angeles. Not knowing much about Ben, I was curious about why an actor was teaching others about how to listen, even asking them to post signs on street corners encouraging strangers to come speak with them. But that is Ben's magic. In our podcast, we dig deep into Ben's own life experiences and the need to listen to others if we are going to find ourselves. As you listen to Ben, you too will realize that listening is far more important than most of us ever thought. Perhaps you'll find yourself pausing, listening and enjoying others in totally new ways. That's what happened to me...hopefully to you too. Enjoy, and please share.

How the "Free Listening" movement started

In 2012, Ben Mathes sent a community of actors onto the streets of Los Angeles holding signs that said, "Free Listening." The artists opened their hearts to anyone who needed to laugh, cry, scream or just chat. Everyone involved never imagined that this simple act would start a worldwide movement called Urban Confessional that today has grown to include people from all walks of life across 6 continents, 80 countries and 40 states.

Thousands of volunteers across the globe now listen to strangers, capturing their thoughts and ideas. The feedback Ben has gotten is that his simple but big has been transformative, enabling participants to simply listen to people they otherwise never would have met.

    The importance of being heard

This lovely passage appears on Ben's website, which sums up Urban Confessional perfectly:

We listen for others, believing that people need to be seen, heard and understood.

We listen for ourselves, having found the exercise of engaging strangers with open ears and open hearts to be life-giving.

Ben's latest book: "Short Paragraphs on Listening"

In his new book, Ben writes about some of the "listenings" that have been important to him. Here is one of my favorites:

"One About Listening with Your Heart

So much can be said without saying anything

The heart, the breath and the body have a way of telling a truth our lips are too afraid to tell

Listen deeply to the deepest parts of yourself and let the heart do the communicating."

    About Benjamin Mathes

Ben has been an actor for over 20 years. In film and television and on stage, he has worked with Academy Award-winning director Clint Eastwood, Academy Award-winning actor Alan Arkin, Andy Garcia, Bradley Cooper, Chris Rock and Academy Award-winning producer Brian Grazer.

In 2012, Ben founded Urban Confessional: A Free Listening Movement, whose volunteers stand on street corners with signs that read "Free Listening" and provide compassionate, non-judgmental listening for anyone who needs to talk. Ben also produced the documentary, "Listening is Loving," about the power of listening to people with dementia.

Ben is the author of four books: "Thought Lozenges for Artists," "CRASH: Unstuck Yourself," "You, the Career" and his newest release, "Short Paragraphs on Listening," which draws from his experience with Free Listening and focuses on the power of listening. In addition, Ben leads acting retreats, career workshops and an acting studio, CRASH ACTING, which inspires a guerrilla approach to acting.

Ben received his MFA in Acting from the University of California, Irvine.

153: Amy Santee—How Anthropology Is Revolutionizing Design Strategy Sep 23, 2019
    Show notes

Hear how anthropology is bringing you better design!

This was a wonderful interview with a fellow anthropologist. Amy Santee is a design research and strategy consultant working in product development, innovation and business strategy. Trained as an anthropologist, Amy incorporates a human-centered lens to help teams build products, services and brands through an understanding of people, context and experience. What does that mean for you? Listen to our fascinating conversation and you'll find out. Learn and share!

As you know, at SAMC we preach the virtues of stepping out and looking at things from the outside-in. Rather than assuming you know what your customers are doing, the challenges they are facing, or the fears and struggles with which they are coping, go out of the office and hang out with them. Listen to their stories. Let them tell you what they think is the problem with the solutions they have today. Don't try and sell them anything. Just listen.

Along those lines, Amy and I dig into the ways in which anthropologists work in Design Thinking to provide an ethnographic approach to new ways to design things. You will listen to hear how she is driven by an endless curiosity about how humans experience the world so they can make sense of complex problem spaces.

As Amy says it so well: "We have to understand the people we're designing for in order to create things that are meaningful and relevant to them. Knowing what they care about is essential for increasing confidence in decisions, lowering risk, achieving business goals and differentiating from competitors."

    A little about Amy Santee

Amy has worked primarily in the digital world, with experience in areas such as ecommerce, entertainment, retail, home improvement, health care, wearables, enterprise software and consumer tech. She is also a prominent figure in the community of anthropological practice, and blogs about design, business, organizational culture and careers at anthropologizing.com. She is now building her own business to bring anthropology to others. You can tell why I'm such a fan!

    Show notes

Hear how consumers have the power to drive marketing!

Are you overwhelmed by the breakneck speed of change in business? Do constantly-shifting consumer trends, unrelenting technology advances and omnipresent digital marketing leave you feeling irrelevant and lost? Fear not. Mark Schaefer can help you stay ahead of the curve. A globally-recognized marketing and social media keynote speaker, business consultant and best-selling author, Mark shows us how hyper-empowered consumers can actually drive business results rather than exist as manipulated pawns. This is priceless advice — don't dare miss it!

    "The most human company wins"

This is the sub-title of Mark's new book, "Marketing Rebellion." As you'll learn when you listen to our podcast, it also sums up Mark's approach to business marketing perfectly. The copy on his website goes even further: "Technology has created new ways to help customers discover, share, and discuss their favorite products. In fact, most of our marketing is occurring without us. Today, the customers are the marketing department. We can't buy our way into these conversations. We have to earn our way in with a new business approach that appeals to constant human truths. The businesses of the past were built on advertising impressions. Today, they are built on human impressions that help customers believe, belong and find meaning. Are you ready for the rebellion?"

In our discussion about his new book, Mark shares these crucial insights with us:

    • How cataclysmic consumer trends are a predictable result of a revolution that started 100 years ago
    • Why businesses must be built on human impressions instead of advertising impressions
    • The five constant human truths at the heart of successful marketing strategy
    • Why customer loyalty is dying and what you need to do about it right now
    • How to help your best customers do the marketing for you
    • Actionable steps to provide an immediate course-correction for businesses of any size

151: Carsten Tams—Changing The Way We Manage Change Sep 09, 2019
    Show notes

Hear how to really bring about real change!

Carsten Tams and I have a lot in common. We both work with organizations that need or want to change. And, we both know the challenges of helping people transform their company, unit, department, or just themselves. Human brains hate to change, even when they're facing a crisis or anticipating one coming soon. What to do? Carsten's process, deeply embedded in humanism and the power of human agency, helps organizations change. In our talk, you'll hear about his own experiences, research and case studies. Ready to change? Listen in and let us lend a hand.

A shift in how to help organizations change

Not all that long ago, leading change management processes — from John Kotter's 8-Step Process for Leading Change to Jeff Hiatt's ADKAR Change Management Model to Kurt Lewin's Unfreeze, Change, Freeze Model of Change — preached approaches that companies embraced. All too often, however, these processes met with serious resistance (70% of the time, says McKinsey and Company) and limited positive change. Humans do believe in change, as long as it's not them who's expected to change. Are we surprised at this? Of course not!

Carsten gives us two things to remember:

    1. What you believe about people will greatly influence what you do to help them change. If you think people are lazy, insolent and need to be directed and driven (Theory X), you will have a hard time overcoming their resistance. They will be happy to watch you fail.
    1. If you believe people are smart, caring and engaged in helping you build your organization, you have a big opportunity to engage with them to help you take your business in new directions with greater results (Theory Y).

It sounds simple but all too often, what you believe is what you create

It is not the people working with you. It is you and how you think about what your employees can do. This is how you mobilize them to do great things. As culture change experts, you can read more about our own approach to helping businesses change in my book, "On the Brink: A Fresh Lens to Take Your Business to New Heights." Read the first chapter for free here!

    About Carsten Tams

A consultant, author and highly sought-after speaker, Carsten Tams is fascinated with the power of human agency. People aspire to regulate their own lives and participate in shaping the world around them, and so the question is: how can we design organizations in ways that unlock this creative life force and channel it toward positive organizational objectives?

Answering this question is Carsten's passion and the focus of his company, Emagence, a New York City-based consulting boutique. Partnering with influential leaders in performance-focused, values-driven companies, he helps them develop human-centered strategies for strengthening ethical performance.

Drawing on 17 years' experience designing innovative and award-winning solutions in the organizational development, human resources and ethics space, Carsten builds on the best available insights in behavioral science to achieve optimal employee engagement and performance.

Carsten earned a Bachelor's Degree in European Studies from Institut d'Études Politiques de Paris, a Diploma in Political Science from Freie Universität Berlin, and an MPA2 in Public Administration from the John F. Kennedy School of Government, Harvard University.

150: Rita McGrath—Don't Run From Change, Embrace It! Sep 03, 2019
    Show notes

Hear how nonusers are waiting for you to fulfill their unmet needs!

I had such an amazing conversation with Dr. Rita Gunther McGrath. I have been a fan of her thinking over the past twenty years, and have read and used each of her books, The Entrepreneurial Mindset, Market Busters, Discovery Driven Growth and The End of Competitive Advantage. Her new book, Seeing Around Corners: How to Spot Inflection Points in Business Before They Happen, is coming out today, September 3, 2019, and is the topic of our interview.

Today, you're either a disrupter, adapting to disruptions, or being disrupted

You will enjoy listening to Dr. McGrath reflect on what we are both seeing: a great deal of change opening up opportunities for new businesses to emerge, for others to surge, and for some to purge. The "resisters" are gone—those businesses that refuse to adapt to changing times, that "don't do it that way," that cannot seem to open their minds to the massive changes coming all around them.

Listen carefully to our conversation because you don't have to fight the changes—the unmet needs and nonusers that we speak about at SAMC so often. Your potential customers are waiting for you to help them. You just have to start seeing things through a fresh lens. Our job (Rita's and SAMC's) is to help you do that. Rita will tell you why and how to start to spot those inflection points before they gobble you up!

    About Dr. Rita Gunther McGrath

Rita Gunther McGrath Ph.D. is a best-selling author, a sought-after speaker and a longtime professor at Columbia Business School. She is one of the world's top experts on innovation and growth, and is one of the most regularly published authors in the Harvard Business Review. She is consistently ranked among the top 10 management thinkers in the world and was ranked #1 for strategy by Thinkers50. In 2009, she was elected as a Fellow of the Strategic Management Society in recognition of her impact on the field. She has also been elected as a Fellow of the International Academy of Management and has received the "Theory to Practice" award at the Vienna Strategy Forum.

149: Sarah Soule—Busting Those Stereotypes of Women Sep 02, 2019
    Show notes

Learn how to completely transform how women are described!

As so often happens, I found Sarah Soule as I wandered around the internet looking for women doing amazing work trying to dismantle the stereotypes that shackle women and keep them from rising. Dr. Soule co-authored an outstanding article in the June 2019 Harvard Business Review, "The Stereotypes in MBA Case Studies," in which she describes her research on case studies and gender stereotyping within Stanford University's MBA program. In the study, Sarah and her co-authors examined 249 case studies used in Stanford's MBA core curriculum from 2015-2017 and found similar trends as Symons and Ibarrain in their 2014 research, "What the Scarcity of Women in Business Case Studies Really Looks Like." The common thread? Continual reinforcement of outdated (false) gender stereotypes. So much to learn here. Don't miss this!

Just 16% of the protagonists of Stanford's MBA case studies were women

When Sarah and her research colleagues, Davina Drabkin and Lori Mackenzie, examined the gender stereotypes in the case studies used by Stanford University in its MBA program, they realized that certain words, and the associated images of stereotypes projected by those words, portrayed women in highly judgmental and negative ways instead of seeing them as business leaders, innovators and creative movers and shakers.

What was most troubling, though, to these female researchers was that the gender stereotyping was endemic in the materials used in teaching the next generation of business leaders. The researchers had fundamental problems with the portrayals of what women do, what men do, and how each go about doing it. Moreover, not only were the women in the case studies typically in "pink" industries, they were usually the only women in the stories and rarely described as positively as their male counterparts. Obviously, something has to change.

How can we change the next generation of leaders if we continue to portray women in stereotypical ways?

We were thrilled when Dr. Soule agreed to an On The Brink podcast interview because we wanted her to share with our listeners what she is doing, learning and teaching others about how the words we use and the images we create deeply influence our ideas about men and women, and not always to the benefit of women. We were not disappointed.

The three major themes we discuss:

    1. Sarah and her colleagues' research on gender stereotyping in the Stanford MBA case studies, and how Stanford is now addressing the issue and changing (or not changing) those studies.
    2. Sarah's current research on the depth of the stereotyping problem that women face. She shared one such study within the craft beer industry. When beer tasters were told the beer was brewed by women, they didn't like it. When they were given the same beer but told it was brewed by men, they loved it. Similar results have been gathered in study after study.
    3. Sarah's work on how changing cultures is a social movement rather than a mandate. As culture change experts ourselves, we were thrilled when our discussion delved deeply into the challenges of changing how people think and why that is crucial for changing organizations.

The stereotyping that Sarah and her colleagues found in the MBA case studies fell (unsurprisingly) into four major areas:

    1. Sweeping statements about cultures. Some of the case studies included erroneous generalizations about a country's culture, often without context, data or specific examples.
    2. Reinforcing stereotypes about consumer behavior while lacking context. There were also misleading stereotypes in descriptions of consumer motivations and behaviors.
    3. Promoting gender stereotypes and reinforcing gender roles. In case studies which had a women protagonist, the studies' authors typically included details that reinforced stereotypes of women as subservient and men as assertive. In addition, they used pejorative descriptors for women that they did not use for male protagonists, and that were not relevant to the teaching points.
    4. Fusing stereotypes and marketing segmentation. Identifying and describing male and female personas from inaccurate stereotypes.
