How the message of the music comes directly from the richness of tending to the land.
What their lives look like tour for 6months of the year around the world and spending the other half of the year running a family farm.
How they learned regenerative farming practices from a disappearing generation and revitalized a community.
How and where they recorded the album 'HORIZON'.
Some of the challenges they have faced and overcome learning to farm.

The Latin Dead's Brenden Tacon & Oscar Hernandez - Building Cultural Bridges Mar 31, 2023

Show notes

This week on No Simple Road we are super proud and excited to have Latin Dead founder Brenden Tacon and 4 time Grammy winner Oscar Hernandez as our guests as part of our lead up to Skull & Roses Festival in Ventura, California April 19th-23rd!

The Latin Dead is a California-based collective that fuses the music of the Grateful Dead with Latin Jazz. The band features some of the biggest names in both Grateful Dead and Latin music including guitarist and vocalist John Kadlecik (Furthur, Dark Star Orchestra, Melvin Seals & JGB) and Latin legend Oscar Hernandez (4X Grammy winning pianist/composer/arranger/producer and leader of Spanish Harlem Orchestra). This unique band leads listeners down a genre-bending road of music and culture, drawing equally from Grateful Dead, Jazz and Afro-Latino traditions. With world class musicians and innovative arrangements that span the emotional spectrum, The Latin Dead aims to push musical boundaries while building cultural bridges.

We talk with the guys about:

Brenden's growing up with Grateful Dead roots.
What prompted Brenden to want to create The Latin Dead.
Using the project as a cultural bridge between his Deadhead and Latin roots.
The importance of folklore when learning Latin Percussion.
Oscar's introduction to the project through Brenden's passion.
Oscar's experience of his first Dead and Company show.
Why Oscar was initially hesitant to join and what made him decide to do it in the end.
What it means to continually be planting seeds.
How John Kadlecik came to be involved with this project.
Why passion and integrity are the most important things in making music.

Show notes

Catch up with the No Simple Road crew as they discuss everything from the music scene, family life, show recaps & reviews, spirituality, psychedelics, and everything in-between!

This week on The Rewind we discuss Apple's recent heath issues and give you all an update on how he's doing and how his healing is proceeding. Then, we jump into the deep end of the existential swimming pool with a discussion about the meaning of 'love'. Is it a thing we 'do', is it just a feeling, is it emotional currency, is it a battlefield? We do our best to give our thoughts as to what 'love' is.

Dean Delray - The Power Chord Of Laughter Mar 24, 2023

Show notes

We are super excited and honored to have Dean Delray as our guest on No Simple Road this week! Dean Delray is a case study of turning passion into a labor of love, merging his affinity with music and comedy into a thriving career on stage and a growing podcast network. When he’s not talking to musicians on his podcast, Let There Be Talk, chances are he is headed to his next stand up comedy gig, having performed almost 5,000 times over the past 12 years.

Delray’s path to the comedy stage started at open mic nights, honing his no-holds-barred and hard-livin' perspective that has earned him feature spots on The Joe Rogan Experience, WTF with Marc Maron, You Made it Weird with Pete Holmes and recently opening for Metallica at their 40th Anniversary concert.

We talk with Dean about:

Beginning his stand-up career in his 40's.
Opening for Metallica's 40th Anniversary concerts.
How age-ism is present in the comedy world.
His point-of-entry into the comedy scene and doing stand-up.
The reason that loving what you are doing is the most important thing ever.
The ways in which playing music prepared him for what he is doing now.
How Dean got turned on to The Grateful Dead and why he hated them growing up.
How microdosing has helped to heal some deep mental stuff for him.
How his stand-up routine evolves.
Why word-of-mouth is so important.

... and so much more!

Head over to: www.deandelray.com for tour info, merch, videos, and more, and make sure to give his podcast 'Let There Be Talk' a listen everywhere podcasts stream!

No Simple Road's Weekly Rewind - Vol. 22 Mar 20, 2023

Show notes

Catch up with the No Simple Road crew as they discuss everything from the music scene, family life, show recaps & reviews, spirituality, psychedelics, and everything in-between!

This week on The Rewind we get into the swing of the season and talk about change. It's nearly Spring and with the change of season comes the voice inside that calls for a change along with the rhythms of the earth. What are some ways that we recognize it is time for a change within ourselves, how do we get the pendulum swinging in the right direction if we feel we're off track, and what are ways that each of us begin a new cycle of habits and patterns to start to create positive change in our lives.

Rob Koritz of Dark Star Orchestra - Coming Around Mar 17, 2023

Show notes

We are super excited this week to have Rob Koritz of Dark Star Orchestra as our guest on No Simple Road as part of our lead up to Skull & Roses Festival! Rob was classically trained at the University of Arizona before realizing there was little career opportunity in classical percussion. After some travel time in Europe (including 1990 Dead Tour) he resumed his studies, getting a degree in Jazz Studies at Webster University in his hometown, St. Louis MO.

Over the next 9 years, his musical career including everything from original bands to Dead, jazz, classical, country, zydeco, a samba troupe doing corporate gigs, and way too many wedding gigs.

We jump right into it with Rob talking about:

Rob's favorite cartoon as a kid.
Why he created a podcast during the Pandemic and what he had to learn to make it happen.
How he got turned on to The Grateful Dead
What it was that pulled him from school to music.
They way he saw the Dead scene explode when Touch Of Grey came out.
How unexpected it is to be carrying on the musical legacy of The Grateful Dead through DSO.
What his experience is like when the music plays the band.
What the recent DSO Europe tour was like for him.
How he has finally found equilibrium in a work/life balance.
His perspective on why Grateful Dead music does what it does for people.

... and a ton more!
