Andy Frasco - Back On The Couch May 12, 2023

Show notes

We're super stoked to have the one and only Andy Frasco back on No Simple Road as our guest this week! If you don't already know who Andy Frasco is you probably have been living under a rock. He's been constantly touring with his band Andy Frasco & The U.N. and performing at all the major festivals, well known venues, and bringing his own brand of chaotic fun to folks all over the world! There's no show like a Andy Frasco & The U.N. show, that's for sure.

Andy's back in the studio this week with the NSR crew for another therapy session. We've become Andy's Portland therapists and we dig right into it talking about:

How he hates birthday attention.
Why he feels that it's time to actually start taking care of himself.
The reasons it's not smart to do Ketamine in public.
How he has the ability to say no (believe it or not).
How his mental demons materialize.
His most recent experience with heartbreak.
Why we think he needs an emotional support mini Doberman.
How he's seen different ways of living traveling the world.
IIf there's a point when he thinks he's made it.
What his 'rock bottom' looked like.

... and so much more!

Jake Brownstein of Eggy - Right From The Start May 05, 2023

Show notes

We are extremely excited to have Jake Brownstein of Eggy as our guest on No Simple Road this week! Song by timeless song Eggy reaches out a hand, inviting you along as a great story unfolds. Eggy’s music traces the full spectrum of emotions evoked by a life well-lived alongside friends well-loved.

Jake joined us here in the NSR studio on their stop here in Portland to hang out with us a little bit and have an extremely heartfelt conversation about:

The ways in which our musical community responds from town to town and state to state across the country.
What it was about playing music that drove Jake from an early age to want to do it for a living.
If playing is more of an emotional outlet for him or a place to find his own unique voice.
Why he decided to learn to play pedal steel guitar, the musical equivalent of flying a spaceship.
The way in which his own unique style of learning has benefited him in life.
How he keeps his mental space on point with so much happening so fast and with so much going on.
The importance of having solid friendships, family, and partner support while sacrificing for a dream.
Eggy's plans of recording their new album with James Petralli of White Denim.

... and much, much more!

Show notes

Catch up with the No Simple Road crew as they discuss everything from the music scene, family life, show recaps & reviews, spirituality, psychedelics, and everything in-between!

This week on The Rewind we've got a player absent! Apple is still stuck in Fresno so Mel and Aaron take the wheel and talk about the last couple of week's transformational experiences and what the catalysts have been for each of them. Aaron takes us through his recent decision to begin a personal meditation practice and his hesitancy to seek instruction when it comes to anything remotely spiritual. Then, they spend some time talking about the recent trip to Skull & Roses and Mel shares what insight she gained amidst the chaos of backstage. And finally, they recap Phish at The Hollywood Bowl and what it was like to have their Daughter with them for her first Phish experience.

Luke Black & Drury Anderson of The Mountain Grass Unit - Keeping The Fire Going Apr 28, 2023

Show notes

We're stoked this week to have Luke Black and Drury Anderson of The Mountain Grass Unit as our guests on No Simple Road! The Mountain Grass Unit consists of three Birmingham pickers, Drury Anderson (mandolin and vocals), Luke Black (acoustic guitar and banjo), and Sam Wilson (upright bass). With the addition of Luke Black and Sam Wilson on harmonies, The Mountain Grass Unit has established the firm foundation to take on not only the vocal harmonies of traditional bluegrass tunes, but also the freedom to adapt songs from various genres to an all-acoustic format. Aside from their original songs, all three are equally comfortable restyling a Tony Rice number, a classic Grateful Dead tune, or covering contemporary acoustic masters like Billy Strings. The youthful exuberance and energy they bring to the stage is always remarkable.

We talk with the guys about:

Their experience attending Berklee College Of Music.
How they have explored and developed their vocal chops.
The was they got Sam to join the band and play the upright bass.
How rap rhythms influence their sound.
If they are feeling the wave of momentum behind them and how it is affecting their world.
How they came to learn about Jamgrass and the way the community has taken them in.
Where they see themselves fitting into the wider tapestry of the musical community,
How they deal with playing for rowdy crowds.
Some of the kindness and love they've found on the road.

... and much, much more!
