Trevor Hall - Navigating The In Between Jul 21, 2023

Show notes

This week on No Simple Road we are super excited to have Trevor Hall as our guest! Raised on an island in South Carolina, singer/songwriter Trevor Hall realized at a young age that music was more than just a passion - it was his life’s art. At sixteen, he recorded his first album. Shortly after, Hall left South Carolina for Idyllwild Arts Academy in California where he studied classical guitar and was introduced to the practices of yoga and meditation, which would greatly influence his life and his music.

Hall’s music, a blend of roots and folk music with touches of electronic elements, is imbued with a deep love of Eastern Mysticism. This powerful symbiosis fostered a deep connectivity with his growing fan base and Trevor quickly matured into a leader of the burgeoning conscious musical community. Along with numerous pilgrimages to India, he has sold out the historic Red Rocks Amphitheatre in Colorado as a headliner and he also completed a series of sold-out international tours with artists such as Ziggy Marley, Jimmy Cliff, Michael Franti, John Butler Trio, Matisyahu and Brett Dennen.

We talk with Trevor about:

How being an introvert at heart translates to being a musician.
His experiences of getting signed to a major label at the age of 16 and how it affected him.
How being treated like a 'product' took its toll on his mental state and self confidence.
What the genesis of his spiritual journey looked like.
Some of his experiences in traveling to India and practicing Yoga.
How "the Great In Between' and the new album came to be.
The ways in which becoming a Father have fundamentally changed him for the better.

... and much, much more!

Luke Wientzen of Our Breath Collective - The Feeling You Forgot Jun 30, 2023

Show notes

We are extremely excited to have our Brother and member of the NSR Family, Luke Wientzen of Our Breath Collective as our guest on No Simple Road this week! For the past 15 years, Luke has been studying and teaching a broad range of body, breath, and mind practices. A low-back injury in 2012 led him to an in-depth study of breathwork and committing to an ongoing zazen training. Each of these modalities produced profound healing and accelerated heart opening in his life.

We came to know Luke through the synchronicities that abound at Phish which culminated in him becoming our very own Conductor's meditation and breathwork teacher for the past couple of months.

We talk with Luke this week about:

The synchronicities involved in our meeting at various Phish shows.
Getting over the hangups and hesitations surrounding sitting with a teacher.
His perspectives on living in and recognizing 'Deep Heart Mind' awareness.
Why we want to work 'through' our ego rather than fight against it.
His experience of leaving the Phish community and then returning years later.
The origin of 'Our Breath Collective'.
Tackling discomfort head-on.
A few of those amazing stories from recent Phish shows!

... and much, much more!

No Simple Road's Weekly Rewind Vol. 36 Jun 27, 2023

Show notes

This week on The Rewind we talk a bit about what it means to be a 'Grandparent' and share some stories from the recent visit of the coolest kid on the planet, Jasper. Then, we get into a a discussion surrounding why it is we go through the planning, expense, and time consuming activity of attending music festivals. What is it that makes this thing a priority for us? Why is it so vital to our mental health?

And finally, (59:000:00) we share our most recent LIVE PODCAST from 'Mojo Family Fest' on June 17th, 2023. We shared our hearts and our thoughts as Rhythms Ground set sail on her inaugural journey of becoming the Pacific Northwest's most unique and magickal boutique festival grounds and talked a bit with the property's owners/stewards, The Raverts. We finish up with a land dedication ritual in which we infused the land itself with the rhythms of our bodies, minds, and hearts!

SEGO - Living The Dream Jun 23, 2023

Show notes

We are super excited to have our friends SEGO as our guests on No Simple Road this week! SEGO is a band that defies definition and genre. Elements of punk-rock, hip-hop, electronic synth driven hooks, and psychedelic lyrics all come together to form what can simply be called SEGO! Hailing from Los Angeles by way of Provost, Utah the band is made up of Spencer Peterson (guitar/vocals), Thomas Carroll (drums), Alyssa "Derv" Davey (bass), and multi-instrumentalist Kathleen Frewin.

We got the whole band on to talk about:

The music scene in Provo, Utah & people's misconceptions of it.
The good, bad, and ugly of touring the country.
Derv's love of Milwaukee.
Some of the band's proudest accomplishments of the last few years.
How they navigate the weird world of DIY recording, producing, and publishing.
Their own particular process of creation.
How gratitude comes into play.
Working together to create a coherent vibe.
How Derv & Kathleen actually saved the band from certain doom.

... and a whole lot more!
