No Simple Road's Weekly Rewind - Vol. 34 Jun 12, 2023

Show notes

Catch up with the No Simple Road crew as they discuss everything from the music scene, family life, show recaps & reviews, spirituality, psychedelics, and everything in-between! We produce these episodes with the collaboration of The Edible Beats out of Denver, Colorado and couldn't make this happen every week without them!

This week on The Rewind we recap this past weekend's goings on in the world of No Simple Road. We talk a bit about exhaustion and how it manifests for each of us and how we deal with it. Then, we get into a discussion about our media diets and how each of us are affected by the content we choose to take into our heads. Are we the type of folks that can shrug off a violent or intense movie, or do we tend to 'over-feel' what is coming at us from the screen? Tune in and find out!

Matthew McDonald of Perpetual Groove - Making Space For The Lesson Jun 09, 2023

Show notes

We are so stoked to have No Simple Road Family member and keyboardist for Perpetual Groove, Matthew McDonald, as our guest on the show this week. Perpetual Groove has been goin at it on the music scene since 1997. PGroove incorporates a mix of traditional Southern Rock, funk, jazzy improvisation, indie rock and synth loops. Their music is a journey in and of itself and over the 20+ years they have been touring and playing together they have honed their craft into something extremely magical and have amassed an army of faithful PGroove fans!

We sit down with Matthew to talk about:

How he became a fan of No Simple Road and part of our little family.
The humble beginnings of Perpetual Groove.
The 20 year anniversary re-issue of 'Sweet Oblivious Antidote'
His experience of playing music for the US Military.
Memories of the Jam Scene during the Phish hiatus and the opportunity it created for them.
How the band feels about carrying the moniker of 'Jam Band'.
What it's like to see a fresh infusion of energy and life come into the scene.
Needing to respect the space when the time comes for a personal change.
How he and the band deal with the double edged sword of social media.
The necessity of accepting where we are at any given time.

No Simple Road's Weekly Rewind - Vol. 33 Jun 05, 2023

Show notes

This week on The Rewind we start the episode with a conversation centered around death and how it affects us, how our culture has not done us any favors where this subject is concerned, and how we should try and talk about this uncomfortable subject before we can't anymore. Then, we lighten the mood a little bit with a discussion about our being invited to the Oregon Country Fair, what that means for us, some history of the fair for context, and how we feel about being asked to bring NSR to this iconic Pacific Northwest happening.

Ari Joshua - Orbiting The Black Hole Jun 02, 2023

Show notes

We are so excited to have Ari Joshua as our guest on No Simple Road This week! For years, shamanistic guitarist and composer Ari Joshua has been one of those “musician’s musicians” who those “in the know” rave about but remains under the radar to the public. Struggles with substance abuse; a severe car accident; Ari’s commitment to music education with the successful school he founded, The Music Factory; and the daunting task of mixing have kept him in something of a creative holding pattern.

Ari is finally opening his vault and sharing a catalog of recordings that feature his masterful musicianship alongside such revered instrumentalists as four-time Grammy-winning artist Robert Glasper, Marco Benevento, Joe Russo, Delvon Lamarr, Skerik, and members of the Trey Anastasio Band. These tracks will be issued in various configurations, and they document a spiritual journey of a prodigious talent all-consumed by his passion for music.

We talk with Ari about:

Growing up on the east coast and receiving a scholarship to music school.
His struggles and triumphs in running his own music school, The Music Factory.
Having Stone Gossard of Pearl Jam as a mentor.
Buying the building for The Music Factory with the help of local investors.
His early connection to frequency and sound.
Overcoming his fear of sharing his art.
What it means to find our own personal 'Black Hole' and what we do with it when we find it.
Having the guts to just 'go for it' when you feel something move you.
How the Grunge Era and the Seattle music scene shaped his life and sound.
Finding focus when you have a ton of things on your plate.
Ways to serve your own creative abilities.

... and so much more!

No Simple Road's Weekly Rewind - Vol. 32 May 29, 2023

Show notes

Catch up with the No Simple Road crew as they discuss everything from the music scene, family life, show recaps & reviews, spirituality, psychedelics, and everything in-between!

This week on The Rewind we talk about the most wonderful time of the year... Festival Season! We spend a lot of time planning for, going to, thinking about, and attending festivals. What is so special about them that keeps us going back time and again? Is it the community, is it the music, is it the magic that is created when community forms around music? Is it a little of column A and a little of column B? We answer these questions and talk a little bit about the upcoming Mojo Family Fest here in the PNW at the newly minted Rhythm's Grounds and give you a little backstory on some of the bands that are going to be there with us this year!

Marcel Ardans of Lessons With Marcel - The Biggest Baddest Billy Goat In The Barn May 26, 2023

Show notes

We are so stoked to have Marcel Ardans of the Lessons With Marcel YouTube channel as our guest on No Simple Road this week!

Marcel Ardans is a guitarist, teacher and YouTuber active in the Raleigh music scene. His time in the bluegrass scene began in the Pacific Northwest, where he wood-shedded and gigged extensively with local and regional acts. Rightfully earning the nickname “The Biggest Baddest Billy Goat In The Barnyard”. In 2015, he started the online business Lessons With Marcel. The goal was to bring flatpicking and bluegrass guitar to those who wanted instruction but lacked local resources, essentially trying to make bluegrass more accessible, to grow the community.

We chop it up with Marcel about:

His experience of living with hearing loss as a musician and trying to get into music school.
His deep love and obsession with Bluegrass music and why it's a Normal Rockwell painting.
His reasons for wanting to play music and teach music later on in life.
Why he decided to bring the history lessons back to the YouTube channel.
His take on both traditional and the new grass styles.
How learning the roots of a thing only deepens your experience with it.
His new podcast "Podcast With Marcel' and how that came to be.
How he has dealt with a growing community.

... and much, much more!

Head over to his YouTube Channel 'Lessons With Marcel' and his website www.lessonswithmarcel.com for more info, lessons, music, and more!

No Simple Road's Weekly Rewind - Vol. 31 May 22, 2023

Show notes

Catch up with the No Simple Road crew as they discuss everything from the music scene, family life, show recaps & reviews, spirituality, psychedelics, and everything in-between!

This week on The Rewind we talk about burning the candle at both ends. What are some of the ways we care for ourselves when we realize that we are exhausted and there is no end in sight. Do we exercise more, meditate, try and eat healthier, spend time zoning out on a good movie, or is it some unknown thing we just haven't figured out just yet? Is it a mixture of all or some of these things? Is it personal and different for all of us? Give this episode a listen and find out!

Will Hanza Of Escaper - Boarding The Spaceship May 19, 2023

Show notes

We are so stoked to have our brother Will Hanza of Escaper back on No Simple Road this week!

Escaper was formed in 2015 by Will Hanza (guitar, vocals) as a musical collective that pushed creative freedom. Joined in 2017 by Phil Kadet (keys, vocal), the band has become known for fun and fiery sets throughout northeast venues and music festivals. The band has welcomed sit-ins with members of bands such as the Disco Biscuits, Brazilian Girls, Thievery Corporation, Rubblebucket, Dopapod, Cabinet, Turkuaz and more. They have previously shared bills at Brooklyn Bowl with Jon Fishman (Phish), Karl Denson, and many other top performers.

After a hiatus during the COVID-19 pandemic, they have been joined by drummer Sam Crespo and bassist Luke Bemand. Crespo and Bemand bring a wealth of experience to the band; Crespo tours with notable future jam act Space Bacon, while Bemand handles the low end for heavy groove trio, lespecial.

The band recently released the EP, "Spaceship", which was a collaboration with Telefunken Studios. "Spaceship" is now all streaming and download platforms.

We had a blast talking with Will about:

playing Phish afterparties and what those crowds bring to the table.
If reading a crowd and feeling their vibe is a learned skill or are you just born with it.
What creating the new album 'Spaceship' was like.
His thoughts on practice and if it is simply building memory in order to be able to let go.
Overcoming your own headspace in order to be able to perform.
How the "No Shorts On Stage" rule works.
What gems he found during isolation.

... and so much more!

Artist Spotlight - The Jauntee May 17, 2023

Show notes

We are back with another Artist Spotlight this week with Caton Sollenberger & Scott Ferber of The Jauntee!

In a world filled with instant gratification, gimmicky over saturation and a lack of true improvisation, The Jauntee pays tribute to music’s ability to transcend simple entertainment and cultivate a truly distinctive experience. The Jauntee has fostered a musical community based on a breadth of original material that engages fans through nightly exploration and risk taking. Averaging over one hundred shows a year, with each containing a unique set list and their own special improvisational moments, the band is constantly expanding upon what defines them and their live performances.

We talk with Scott and Caton about:

Coming from the humble beginnings of playing the bar scene to taking the stage at major festivals and bigger and bigger rooms.
What atmosphere they are creating at a Jauntee show for their audience.
How they have honed the skill of navigating the unknown.
What it is that drives them to explore jams that last upwards of 30 minutes or more and what it is that they find inside of those outer spaces.
the way the sound in a particular room can make or break a show for them.
How the decision to not all live together anymore affected them and the music.
The ways they have been forced to focus on the positive even when exhaustion sets in.
The reason that finding bandmates that you love is like hitting the lottery.
How creating the new album has been a new experience for them in the studio.

... and much, much more!!!!

No Simple Road's Weekly Rewind - Vol. 30 May 15, 2023

Show notes

Catch up with the No Simple Road crew as they discuss everything from the music scene, family life, show recaps & reviews, spirituality, psychedelics, and everything in-between!

This week on The Rewind we spend some time talking about Moms, psychedelics, taking psychedelics with your Mom, and what it is we think a psychedelic is actually 'doing' when we take it. This one is a twisted road of conversation that finally has all of us arrive at the destination together.

We start this week with Mel talking all about the healing journey she's been on lately with her Mom and how she's witnessed some pretty remarkable transformation in her over the last week-and-a-half. Then, the question is posed, "what do you think a psychedelic is doing when you ingest it?" Each of us gives our thoughts and the different perspectives seem to merge into an actual coherent idea.
