No Simple Road's Weekly Rewind - Vol. 16 Feb 06, 2023

Show notes

This Weekly Rewind is done in collaboration with The Edible Beats!

Catch up with the No Simple Road crew as they discuss everything from the music scene, family life, show recaps & reviews, spirituality, psychedelics, and everything in-between!

This week's rewind is starts off with a little of Mel's insights into how 2023 is going so far. We're only a little over a month in but she's got some insights! Then, on the heels of our conversation for an upcoming episode with the ladies over at the 'Goose Chicks Podcast', we share some of our experience by talking about the things we wish we'd have known before going to our first jam scene concerts. What should we have brought along? Is it cool to try hanging in different parts of the venue and why would I care? Can I talk to the folks around me? How should I have packed? Should I pick up that pill I found on the floor (answer to that is no BTW). We answer these age old questions and more!

Maurice Tani - Americana The Beautiful Jan 27, 2023

Show notes

This week on No Simple Road we are super excited to have Maurice Tani as our guest! Maurice put on a cowboy hat and changed his life. The guitarist, singer, songwriter and producer has been a well-known name on the Bay Area music scene for several decades. He was the lead guitarist for Roy Loney’s post-Flamin’ Groovies band, The Phantom Movers, and spent almost 20 years in Big Bang Beat and the Zazu Pitts Memorial Orchestra, playing cover tunes in clubs and at corporate events.

This is one of those episodes where when we were done we felt like we got taken to a master class in life and music! We talk to Maurice about how musical genre is a false construct, the joy of working wtih a record label like 'Little Village', the creation of the new album 'All In', how working with diversity develops empathy, the ways in which what is imagined and what is manifest are sometimes vastly different when creating music, how occasionally lessons learned through playing music can apply to every day life, Derek Trucks' Rules for participating in a jam, the impact of top 40 radio on our country's listening habits, the intimate communication between the audience and the creator of the music or art, and so much more!

Make sure to check out the new album 'Maurice Tani - All In' everywhere music streams and at www.littlevillagefoundation.com

The Garcia Birthday Band - Bringing Us Home Jan 20, 2023

Show notes

We are so excited to have Peter, Murray, and Scott from The Garcia Birthday Band as our guests for this 300th episode of No Simple Road!

Garcia Birthday Band, based in Portland Oregon, isn’t your mother’s Grateful Dead cover band. Playing for over 20 years, GBB has evolved into something far deeper than the sum of its parts. The beating heart of the Pacific Northwest’s GD community, the band’s ever-expanding fanbase is an experience unto themselves. Using the Dead’s repertoire as a springboard for limitless potential and improvisation, Garcia Birthday Band are a cornerstone of the modern Grateful Dead universe, and their fans have come to expect the unexpected as the norm.

We sit down with the guys in the NSR Studio and talk about the joy of finding them waiting here to welcome us to the PNW Grateful Dead scene, how they keep the music fresh and growing while playing from the Dead's songbook, they ways in which the band had changed and adapted with gaining a new member, what it was like for Murray to joining a Dead cover band and not be familiar with the Grateful Dead universe, how caring for a thriving community factors into having their band, their upcoming appearances at Gem & Jam and, our favorite, Skull & Roses Festival, and a whole lot more!

Paige Pierce - Playing It Fierce Jan 13, 2023

Show notes

We're super stoked to have 5 time Women's Disc Golf World Champion Paige Pierce as our guest on No Simple Road! Paige Pierce is a professional disc golfer from Plano, Texas. She has won 5 World Championships and 15 total Major Championships, and has been consistently ranked among the top professional women since 2011. In 2018 she broke the record for the highest PDGA player rating a woman had ever achieved at 978.

We had a blast talking with Paige about the crossover between the live-music community and the disc golf world, how her live music experiences have helped to change her for the better, starting her very own podcast and the challenges she's faced in doing so, finding where we fit in the world and what that looks like, the moment she knew she'd be a world champion for sure one day, the joy of leaving our expectations behind, and so much more!

Check out Paige's documentary 'Fierce' on the Disc Golf Network's website www.discgolfnetwork.com

Sicard Hollow's Parrish Gabriel & Matt Rennick - Twice As Nice Jan 06, 2023

Show notes

We are so excited this week to have Parrish Gabriel and Matthew Rennick of Sicard Hollow joining us on No SImple Road!

Nashville’s psychedelic punk-grass rockers, Sicard Hollow, grew up sick of any existing institution telling them who and what to be. Now, as they navigate adulthood, they’re equally tired of the music institutions telling them what their music should sound like—so they dunked it in patchouli and a skate-and-destroy ethos that brings an enduring sound into the modern age.

Before the band met in 2018, none of the members ever considered playing bluegrass. Matt Rennick (violin) was working on electronic music, Will Herrin (mandolin/vocals) was playing guitar in rock bands, and Alex King (guitar/vocals) was barely playing music at all. After a few jam sessions, the bluegrass just kind of happened. Since adding Parrish Gabriel (bass) in the Fall of 2019, the band has been on a journey of self discovery within the genre while challenging themselves to make it their own.

We talk with Matt and Parrish about coping with the realities of being on the road, the importance of having a network of friends and family that you can rely on when not touring, how it feels to actually be breaking genre molds with your music, Matt's side project 'Magec' and his personal struggles with mental health and what he's doing to keep his head on straight, Parrish's love of driving, and a whole lot more!

Check out www.sicardhollow.com for all their tour info, merch, news, and more!
