Comedian Phil Hanley - Some Come To Laugh Their Past Away Nov 25, 2022

Show notes

We're so stoked to have Comedian Phil Hanley as our guest on No Simple Road this week!

Phil began standup comedy by performing at open mics around Vancouver, often in between bands at music venues. In these establishments he discovered and honed his unique blending of material and crowd interaction that makes no two of his performances the same. Phil’s style can best be described as unpredictably reflective, delivered with sharp accuracy, and rooted in the grand tradition of joke-telling.

Phil, being a life-long Deadhead, jumps right into the conversation with us about the music of the Dead, his journey through Dyslexia and how that has shaped his life and career, creating his special 'Ooh La La', how his comedy style can be seen as improvisation, why he started to write a book, and a ton more!

Check out Phil's hilarious new special 'Ooh La La' on his YouTube channel and head over to www.philhanley.com for tour info and more!

Nick Millevoi of Grassy Sound - The Vibe Of Vintage Nov 18, 2022

Show notes

We're so stoked to have Nick Millevoi of Grassy Sound as our guest on No Simple Road this week!

For guitarist Nick Millevoi, all manner of music can be a source of inspiration, including bachelor-pad “exotica” albums of the 1950s, surf-rock records of the ’60s or even old Hollywood cowboy tunes – at least if those influences are put into a modernist compositional and improvisational blender. Millevoi’s usual outfit, the Crazy Horse-meets-Coltrane band Desertion Trio, has released four ultra-potent albums since 2016. But he was inspired by his nostalgic sonic fascinations to compose a fun set of tunes to perform with frequent keyboard partner Ron Stabinsky, dubbing their duo project Grassy Sound. The pair’s debut album of those songs – The Sounds of Grassy Sound – will be released, digitally and on vinyl, via Destiny Records on April 22, 2022. The disc features such Millevoi-penned highlights as the groovy album-opener “Skylark” and the melody-rich “Lu Fran,” both of which showcase his gritty electric-guitar lyricism and Stabinsky’s Hammond B-3 swirl. Then there’s “Flitzer,” an essay in bent surf guitar that has a noisy improv section with a Twilight Zone air. The first video from the album is rocking live take on “Flitzer.

We talk with Nick about creating noise as music, playing shows creating the most in your face music as possible, life altering music moments, how he had no choice but to be a musician, how he balances his musical career with a day job, and a whole lot more!

Check out the new album 'The Sound Of Grassy Sound' on Bandcamp and everywhere music streams!

Justin Cucci - Improvising The Change Nov 11, 2022

Show notes

We are so excited to have Justin Cucci, restauranteur, entrepreneur, and chef, as our guest on No Simple Road this week.

Raised in NYC where his family owned and ran the beloved Waverly Inn, Justin was born immersed in the restaurant scene. Today, as the owner and executive chef of the renowned Edible BeatsGroup, Cucci has reinvigorated Denver’s restaurant culture. His six award-winning eateries (Root Down, Linger, El Five, Vital Root, Root Down DIA, and live music restaurant Ophelia’s Electric Soapbox) offer delicious, vegetable-forward menus using innovative sustainability practices and local produce.

We talk with Justin about his groundbreaking ESOP plan, how he got his start in the business, where he finds his inspirations, how he feels about the legacy he's creating, how it feels to open a new restaurant every few months, how his love of music has infused his career, why one would put an RV on a roof, and so much more!

Author Paul Justison - Lost And Found In The 60's Nov 04, 2022

Show notes

We're extremely excited to have Author Paul Justison on No Simple Road this week! Paul is the author of the new book 'Lost And Found In The 60's' coming out on November 8th, 2022!

James Fadiman, microdose researcher and Author wrote, "This novel is excruciatingly accurate and totally outrageous. Justison has captured the extravagance of the time: the interplay of sexual liberation, psychedelic experiences and coming of age that made the community so intense and inviting. Was drug use so extensive and casual? You bet. Was casual sexual connecting so extensive and easy? Oh my, yes. The 60s, including its dark, scary, lonely, confused reality is all here, as well as the ecstasy, the kindness, and the sharing. If you weren't there, this is as close as you're going to get to knowing what you missed. The stories, the people, the vision- enjoy the trip."

We had an absolute blast talking with Paul and we're sure you're going to dig it too.

Head over to www.unsolicitedpress.com for more info and to buy the book!
