Alex & Will of Sicard Hollow - The Grass Is Growing Oct 21, 2022

Show notes

We're so excited to have Alex and Will from Sicard Hollow as our guests on No Simple Road this week!

Sicard Hollow is a four-piece progressive bluegrass band who formed with a mutual passion for pushing the boundaries of genre. Heavily influenced by the Grateful Dead and New Grass Revival, these young pickers bring new energy to a timeless style with a combination of fearless improvisation and instrumental prowess.

The band formed through mutual connections within the Nashville music scene who all wanted to play something different. They were all simultaneously discovering bluegrass while existing in their other scenes. Once they got together, the rest was history.

We talk with Alex and Will about the formation of Sicard Hollow, creating their new album “Brightest Of Days’, finding the confidence to play in front of others, using the opportunities we have to create the life we want to live, how age can create your perspective on life, the beauty of the Bluegrass community, what their experience in the studio is like and how they handle criticism, trying to live each day with intention and integrity, and a ton more!

Tim Carbone of Railroad Earth - Livin' Life Oct 07, 2022

Show notes

We are extremely excited to have Tim Carbone as our guest on No Simple Road this week! After 34 years of experience creating music as an artist, songwriter, session musician and producer Tim says he may not be up to playing music live for the rest of his life but you will have to pry his dead, clammy hands off the mixing console. Safe to say producing records is his passion.

Mostly known nowadays as the violinist for the roots/jamband Railroad Earth, Tim produced his first record in 1986 and since then has lent his talents to records all around the United States.

As a producer Tim has helped create dozens of albums for some of todays leading, up and coming artists on the Jamband – Americana scene and as a guest on No Simple Road we talk about his early years as a young musician, getting the opportunity to play for the Dali Lama, his take on the state of the jamband and Americana music scenes today, how Tim fell in love with Bluegrass, why he's decided to write a book, the origin story of Railroad Earth, and much more!

For more info on Time, head over to www.timcarbone.com and for all things Railroad Earth go to www.railroad.earth

Show notes

This episode of No Simple Road is dedicated to our Brother David A. Kasakove... in loving memory. NFA

We are extremely excited to have Roger McNamee of Moonalice as our guest on No Simple Road this week! Rogeris also a touring musician, first as a founding member of the Flying Other Brothers, and more recently in that group's follow-on band, Moonalice. Honestly, Roger could own the title of 'The Most Interesting Man In The World' having worked with countless Silicon Valley Pioneers and playing with more musicians than we can count!

He is also an American businessman, investor, venture capitalist and musician. He is the founding partner of the venture capital firm Elevation Partners. Prior to co-founding the firm, McNamee co-founded private equity firm Silver Lake Partners and headed the T. Rowe Price Science and Technology Fund.

McNamee

We talk with Roger about the struggles and joys of the last couple of years, the convergence of music and tech and how that has affected Moonalice, what his one and only interview with Jerry Garcia was like, what it has been like playing with folks like Lester Chamber, how his first Grateful Dead show affected him, the way forward for Moonalice and how they are taking care of their musical family, some of his experiences in his younger days, what it's like to be a poster nerd, and a whole lot more!

Reign LaFreniere of Bluphoria: Taking Chances Sep 23, 2022

Show notes

We are so excited to have Bluphoria's guitarist Reign LaFreniere as our guest on No Simple Road This week! Bluphoria is a pop-rock/alternative band, with psychedelic and southern rock influences originally based out of Eugene, Oregon but now hailing from Nashville, Tennessee!

LaFreniere, 22, along with Dakota Landrum [19, rhythm guitar, background vocals], Dani Janae [20, drums, background vocals], and Rex Wolf [21, bass, background vocals], are that rare collective who have figured out early on in their career how to combine rock, blues, alternative, pop, and psychedelia into a kaleidoscopic signature style of their own design. After spending two years amassing hundreds of thousands of streams independently and packing houses in the Pacific Northwest, the band took to the studio to pay homage to the past, while paving a path for the future and produced their 2022 self-titled full-length debut for EDGEOUT Records.

We had a blast talking with Reign about their experience of playing the iconic Oregon Country Fair, who Reign's influences are and how he is using them to propel his music forward, why he's working so hard to make a future for those he loves, the lessons he's learned regarding keeping your circle tight, how Bluphoria is feeling about their move from Eugene to Nashville, the magick of Sedona, Arizona, and a whole bunch more!

The Real Meaning Of No Simple Road - Nathaniel B. Sep 16, 2022

Show notes

This week is something special! We're going back to the beginning...no famous musician, no artist, author, or comedian. This is back to basics No Simple Road with our brother Nathaniel leading the way. Out of all the episodes that we have done in the past I am sure the three of us would agree that this is the most important one to date.

On a back porch in Denver over Labor Day weekend Aaron and Mel learned what No Simple Road really is and what it does thanks to Nathaniel. He breaks it down in a Ted Talk style rap that left us in tears and completely and utterly humbled and amazed. We know you are going to feel this one right along with us.

We talk about the journey of self discovery using psychedelics as a tool, Phish's role in one man's transformation, the importance of creating a vessel for change, how to shut up and take a compliment, how just being who you are can change someone's life, and so much more.

We're so excited for you all to hear this one!

Steve Kimock - Finding Space Sep 09, 2022

Show notes

We are super stoked to have the one and only Steve Kimock as our guest on No Simple Road this week!

Steve Kimock has proved himself a master of fluid improvisation for over four decades, in the process inspiring music fans with his transcendent guitar speak voiced through electric, acoustic, lap and pedal steel guitars. With his multi-decade reputation as a blazing psychedelic guitarist versatile enough to touch almost all aspects of American music.

Once touted by Jerry Garcia as his “favorite unknown guitar player,” Kimock has also performed as part of Bob Weir’s Kingfish and toured in both 2007 and 2014 with Bob Weir’s band RatDog, in addition to post-Grateful Dead ensembles including The Other Ones, Phil Lesh & Friends, and the Rhythm Devils featuring Mickey Hart and Bill Kreutzmann.

We get right into a super heady conversation that begins with what we think a tree's experience of being alive is like, finding "the moment" and if there is ego involved in it or not, what Steve sees as 'celebrity' and how he's managed to not find that space, why he loves to "find his way" when playing music, how we evolved as a species to gather with music as our centerpiece, and a whole lot more!

Steve is currently on tour all over the US so head over to kimock.com to find out more!

The Owsley Stanley Foundation - The Foxhunt Sep 02, 2022

Show notes

Our friends Starfinder Stanley, Hawk Semins, and Pete Bell from the Owsley Stanley Foundation join us for a special extra episode of No Simple Road this week! This is a true musical history lesson contained in this episode. We travel all the way to Ireland to find the roots of Bluegrass music waiting and find out why Jerry Garcia invited The Chieftains to Open for Old And In The Way in 1973!

The Owsley Stanley Foundation's mission is to preserve more than 1,300 recordings left behind by famed Wall Of Sound engineer and architect and infamous LSD chemist, Owsley "Bear" Stanley. These preserved and meticulously remastered releases have been entitled "Bears Sonic Journals". The Owsley Stanley Foundation’s ninth release of Bear’s Sonic Journals: The Foxhunt features the Chieftains performing live in San Francisco in 1973 (CD & vinyl) and 1976 (CD & digital only).

We talk with Starfinder, Pete, and Hawk about the painstaking work that went into creating this release, the detective work that went into creating the 30+ page booklet of info and stories that come with the physical copies, the artwork and why this particular piece was chosen for the cover, traveling to Dublin just prior to Paddy Moloney's death to get the whole story, and so much more!

To purchase a copy of this amazing release head over to www.owsleystanleyfoundation.org/
