Patrick Harvey of Cycles: Playing The Changes Aug 31, 2022
    Show notes

This week on No Simple Road we are stoked to bring you Patrick Harvey of Cycles as our guest on the show!

The current incarnation of the ever-developing sound of Cycles reveals itself today as a speeding freight train of sound and rhythm. Screaming peaks and balanced grooves find their way out of the chaos of a jam while samples ripped from the likes of Madonna, Lil Nas X and many more ring out and grab the unsuspecting audience by surprise, adding to the multicolored blend of sound filling a room and often standing out as comedic elements of the show.

We talk with Patrick about our upcoming adventure at Camp Suds, the recent loss of Cycles' original bassist and what that has meant for the band, if he is able to listen to his own music without picking it apart, the difficulties presented with coming up in a town with a thriving music scene, some recent opinions on the last Dead & Company shows, the influence of the Grateful Dead on Cycles, and a whole lot more!

For tour info, news, merch, and more head over to: www.cyclestheband.com and check out the latest release 'Terraform' out everywhere music streams.

David Gans - The Golden Road's Tales Aug 26, 2022
    Show notes

We're extremely excited to have David Gans as our guest on No Simple Road this week! David is a musician, songwriter, guitarist, and music-journalist. He is the co-author of the book 'Playin In The Band: An Oral and Visual Portrait of the Grateful Dead', 'This Is All A Dream We Dream: An Oral History of the Grateful Dead'and hosts the weekly syndicated show The Grateful Dead Hour. He also co-hosts a show on Sirius-XM's 'The Grateful Dead Channel' called 'Tales From The Golden Road'. I would dare to day that David is royalty and an elder statesman in our little Grateful Dead community.

We talk with David about how we shouldn't allow the world outside to deny us our joy, how today's strangeness and issues are so different than years gone by, the way that a musician's job has changed over the years, an elders role in the community, why the Grateful Dead's music stood out among so many greats, and so much more!

To watch David's daily livestreams head over to his YouTube channel or www.dgans.com

Northwest String Summit Recap pt. 2 - The Final Verse Aug 19, 2022
    Show notes

For 20 years Northwest String Summit has been a mainstay in the festival scene of the Pacific Northwest. Yonder Mountain String Band started the festival all those years ago and saw fit to move it here to Horning's Hideout. In the years that followed many now famous (and infamous) bluegrass acts cut their teeth at this festival and year after year fans came back for more creating a tight knit community.

This week on No Simple Road we continue our journey at Northwest String Summit 2022 with part 2 of this 2 part series. This being the last year of the festival we wanted to focus less on the bands and more on the community, the stories, the people that have worked hard to create the scene so many of us enjoy. It's our hope that as you listen to this week's episode you'll feel all the feelings along with us as we embark on this bittersweet 4 day run.

We start this episode with Yonder Mountain String Band absolutely killing it on stage the last night of the festival followed with commentary, stories, and an interview with the incredible band 'Never Come Down'. Then, we were lucky enough to catch up with the one and only 'Artist Whisperer' Annabel Lukins for a little conversation. Finally, we take it all home with more stories from the community and the final tear-filled song played on the Main Stage on Sunday night by Yonder.

Shawn Swain of The Kitchen Dwellers - Making It Count Aug 05, 2022
    Show notes

We are so excited to have Shawn Swain from The Kitchen Dwellers as our guest on No Simple Road this week! Earlier this year, Bozeman, Montana’s Kitchen Dwellers released their third full-length album Wise River. Since the release, the band has skyrocketed to consistently packed out venues and festival appearances with no signs of slowing down. The quartet—Shawn Swain [Mandolin], Torrin Daniels [banjo], Joe Funk [upright bass], and Max Davies [acoustic guitar]—twist bluegrass, folk, and rock through a kaleidoscope of homegrown stories, rich mythology, American west wanderlust, and psychedelic hues.

We take a ride with Shawn and talk about the new album Wise River, being sober for 5 years, how the drought has affected him and the land around him, where the Kitchen Dwellers fit into the wider Americana scene, how he's learned to appreciate a well run festival, and much more!

SONG AT THE BEGINNING OF THE INTERVIEW: 'Sundown' off the new album Wise River

SONG AT THE END OF THE INTERVIEW: "Their Names Are The Trees' off the new album Wise River

Rome Yamilov & Henry J. Kaiser - The Lenoir Investigation Jul 29, 2022
    Show notes

We've got something special for you this week with Rome Yamilov and Henry J. Kaiser as our guests on No Simple Road. Theirnew album, The Lenoir Investigation, may have started as a tribute to Chicago blues great J.B. Lenoir, but the two guitarist’s worldly influences carry the 11 tracks around the globe. The album is out now via Little Village.

Henry Kaiser’s work in psychedelic guitar playing has few parallels, as the former Psychedelic Guitar Circusringleader has played on over 300 albums and even used the South Pole—the pole mounted on Earth’s south geographic pole—as a slide to play Antarctic blues. Enter Rome Yamilov, the Russian-born guitarist who came to Little Village by way of harp player Aki Kumar through the San Jose blues scene.

There's so much packed into this one! We start with a conversation with Rome about his humble beginnings, playing with Aki Kumar, and how he ended up working on this amazing project. Then, we jump into a conversation with Henry that will for sure leave you speechless. Let's just say, 45 minutes talking about how the song Dark Star is alive. You can thank us later!

Jordan Fletcher - Rising To The Occasion Jul 22, 2022
    Show notes

We couldn't be more stoked to bring you Jordan Fletcher as our guest on No Simple Road this week! The Jacksonville-born and Nashville-based artist conveys his story with play-by-play urgency and intense attention to detail over authentic country spiked with rock spirit.

You’ll get to know him not only as a songwriter, but also as a dad, a husband, a surfer, and a believer. After racking up millions of streams independently and canvasing the country with the likes of Muscadine Bloodline and Kip Moore, this approach defines a series of 2021 singles and his forthcoming full-length debut album for Triple Tigers.

Jordan is one-of-a-kind and the connection happened immediately in this conversation as we get into to topics like touring in a $300 camper, how the loss of his Father has shaped his life and music, how being an artist has him counting his blessings, the way independent music fans take care of their artists, how he's bringing faith into being a parent, and a whole lot more!
