Avengers: Kang Dynasty Adds Loki Writer, Anya Taylor-Joy Silver Surfer Rumors - Multiverse News 11-29-23 Nov 29, 2023
    Show notes

Anya Taylor-Joy of The Queen’s Gambit and Last Night in Soho fame, is potentially going to fill a major role for Matt Shakman’s upcoming Fantastic Four movie. Marvel is reportedly looking to do a gender-swap with Taylor-Joy for the Silver Surfer. In comics, the character is usually connected with the planet-eating maniac Galactus, and serves as his herald to the planets he’s about to decimate. Many news outlets are calling the character a villain, do we think any of this is true?

We won’t see Christopher Nolan heading up any James Bond movies in the near future. When the director was reportedly attached to a project in July, many fans were thrilled by the news for the famed filmmaker to take on Britain’s greatest agent with a license to kill. While promoting Oppenheimer, Nolan confirmed that the rumors had no legs, “unfortunately” in his words. Who would be a good choice to pick up the 007 world after Daniel Craig’s epic run?

During his recent appearance on the Smartless podcast, director Taika Waititi mentioned that he was not originally interested in doing any Marvel movie, but ended up doing so for the money and to “feed his kids.” When he was approached by Marvel Studios, Waititi said he felt they were combing “the bottom of the barrel,” but that he was “poor” and needed the money. Waititi made Thor: Ragnarok - arguably a favorite in the MCU - and Thor: Love and Thunder, which was widely panned by audiences and critics alike. How do we feel about his comments about the thunder god’s franchise?

The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes took the number one spot at the box office over Thanksgiving weekend, earning $42 million dollars over the five-day run. Napoleon and Disney's 100th film Wish took a close second and third, with Napoleon earning $32.5 million dollars domestically and $78.8 million dollars worldwide and Wish taking home $31.7 million dollars domestically and $49 million dollars worldwide. Overall ticket sales for the Thanksgiving holiday came in at an estimated $173.9 million, which is the best post-pandemic for the holiday, besting 2022’s $134 million, but still far off from pre-pandemic Thanksgiving moviegoing with 2019 having racked up $263.4 million. Seems like audiences were hungry for the box office this Thanksgiving, right?

Star Wars has it’s Feige, TONS of MCU News, Superman: Legacy fills out its cast, the Madame Web trailer has debuted Nov 22, 2023
    Show notes

Welcome to Multiverse News, Your source for Information about all your favorite fictional universes.

When it comes to the sheer number of announcements, updates and rumors we received this week, despite some stiff competition, Marvel Studios dominated the entertainment news cycle. So, let’s rundown and breakdown some of the biggest breaking stories impacting the future of our favorite interconnected film multiverse:

Shang-Chi director Destin Daniel Cretton will no longer be directing Avengers: Kang Dynasty. The filmmaker is reportedly stepping away to continue work on other Marvel Studios projects including a Shang-Chi sequel and the Wonder Man Disney Plus series, which was confirmed to fall under Marvel’s new Spotlight banner.

While speaking with Business Insider, director Taika Waititi discussed the possibility of another Thor sequel, suggesting that he wouldn’t be involved due to commitments to other future projects.

Fantastic Four has been no stranger to casting rumors of varying credibility, but according to Deadline’s sources, Pedro Pascal has emerged as the frontrunner to play Mr. Fantastic, Reed Richards. While the deal is not yet inked, discussions are reportedly going well.

Also, suspected villain Galactus received more attention this week, as insider rumors named Javier Bardem as the choice to voice the planet-eater.

Sony dropped the trailer for Madame Web, giving us our first glimpse at the latest Spider-man spinoff not featuring Spidey. The trailer showcased leads Dakota Johnson and Sydney Sweeney, teasing a slasher-esque narrative as they are stalked by a mysterious villain, Ezekiel Sims. Of course, all those details are overshadowed by the absolute heyday the internet is having with a certain line of dialogue about Studying Spiders.

With the SAG-AFTRA strike nearly in our rearview mirrors, James Gunn has wasted no time building out the foundation of his DCU with a few notable additions joining the roster of Superman: Legacy. Nicholas Hoult is stepping into the Oxford shoes of Superman’s greatest enemy, Lex Luthor. While his secretary and mistress Eve Teschmacher will be played by model and actress Sara Sampaio. Supe’s best pal - Jimmy Olsen will be played by The Righteous Gestone’s Skyler Gisondo. And finally Maria Gabriela de Faria joined the cast as the antagonist, The Engineer, with a liquid nanite body from which she creates solid objects. She is also a member of the team, The Authority. So presumably she would carry over into that announced film as well.

During an interview with Vanity Fair, Ahsoka and Clone Wars showrunner Dave Filoni dished up some details about the future of Star Wars, including his own promotion as the chief creative officer of Lucasfilm. He suggested that the new role would see not only his increased involvement on every part of the franchise, but also include him far earlier in the development process than previously. Filoni will reportedly continue to helm his film which will follow from the events of the Ahsoka, Mandalorian and Book of Boba Fett, as well as a second season of Ahsoka. We asked, which Marvel delay are you most bummed about?

The Fall Guy starring Ryan Gosling is being pushed back March 1 to May 3, the date originally held by Deadpool 3

Actress and playwright, Ana Nogueira, has been tapped to write Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow for the DCU. James Gunn broke the news while confirming that he is also currently looking for a director for the film.

Marvel Studios has dropped the first trailer for the second season of the animated series What If…? The trailer was accompanied by the season’s release schedule; set to debut December 22 on Disney+ and dropping a new episode daily for 9 days through December 30th.

Bob Iger revealed that Disney is working on a fourth “Frozen” movie in addition to the previously announced “Frozen 3,’ which hasn’t been released yet.

The actors strike is over, Marvel release dates post-strike, Kevin Feige will not make Star Wars After all Nov 15, 2023
    Show notes

Welcome to Multiverse News, Your source for Information about all your favorite fictional universes.

It’s devastating news for MCU fans everywhere - The Hollywood Reporter confirmed that Deadpool 3 will be the ONLY MCU film released in 2024. The shift starts with Deadpool 3’s release date - now July 26 instead of May 3 - and trickles down to the other MCU films. Captain America: New World Order’s new release date is February 25, 2025, Thunderbolts is moved to July 25, 2025, and Blade is now pushed to November 7, 2025. Blade and Thunderbolts did not have scripts going into this year’s Writer’s Strike.

Rather than make his mark in the Galaxy Far, Far, Away, Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige is going to turn his space laser focus back to projects of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. A simple “no” answered the question as to whether he would be producing a Star Wars film. The news that Feige would helm a Star Wars film broke in 2019, with Loki writer Michael Waldron being signed on in 2021.

A vote last Friday brought a tentative agreement between the majority of SAG-AFTRA’s National Board and the studio CEO’s of the AMPTP, ending the 118-day actors strike. The guild stated that the total package is valued at more than $1 billion in new wages and benefit plan funding. The 80-page summary of the agreement is not yet public, but was made available to guild members on November 13. Ratification voting for the 160,000 plus members of SAG-AFTRA runs from November 14 through the first week of December.

Disney released a trailer for upcoming Pixar film Inside Out 2. The trailer for the sequel introduces a new emotion: Anxiety. Inside Out 2 is set to release in theaters on June 14, 2024, almost nine years after the first film.

The first trailer for The Garfield Movie has been released. Chicken Little and Emperor’s New Groove director Mark Dindal is the director and the film has a script written by David Reynolds, known for Finding Nemo. The film, which stars Chris Pratt, Hannah Waddingham, Nicholas Hoult, and Samuel L. Jackson in voiceover roles will hit theaters on February 16, 2024.

The trailer dropped for Mean Girls. The musical movie is based on the 2018 Broadway musical, which is based on the 2004 movie, which is based on the 2002 book Queen Bees and Wannabees.

    Echo's Trailer & Rating, Variety's MCU Tell-All - Multiverse News 11-8-23 Nov 08, 2023
    Show notes

Last week, Variety published an article that laid out a behind the scenes look at growing issues and long term concerns at Marvel Studios and Disney regarding the present and future of the MCU. If you follow this show, you are likely up on many of these points but here are a few that caught our eye.

This week’s new MCU entry The Marvels had several behind the scenes issues. The budget for the film was $250 million dollars and is tracking for a low opening weekend as we’ve discussed previously. Lengthy reshoots were needed to bring the film together and director Nia DaCosta also relocated and started working on another project during post-production, which is uncommon in Hollywood, especially with a film of this budget size. However, DaCosta recently responded to the article, stating that this was due to delays in The Marvels release date and was not a controversial move with the studio.

Many of the recent VFX issues are attributed to poor script writing and planning. VFX artists report that they are asked to pivot sometimes suddenly to correct or add VFX late in production due to script rewrites. For example, the first episode of She-Hulk, which was originally a later episode in the season, was flipped to the first episode and ended up costing $25 million dollars for that single episode due to the rewrite.

Blade continues to have serious script issues. The script has been rewritten multiple times and lead actor Mahershala Ali nearly left the project on multiple occasions. One rewrite of the script was described as "female-centric, Blade relegated to the fourth lead, and full of life lessons." Marvel is still looking to make the film, but "on a budget of less than $100 million dollars."

Marvel Studios has had talks about bringing back the original six Avengers actors for a new Avengers film to revive excitement in the franchise, despite the deaths of Iron Man and Black Widow. And now there are rumors that Robert Downey, Jr. has agreed to another film.

Marvel is still undecided about how to handle the future of Jonathan Majors in the MCU. Discussions have ranged from recasting him to pivoting away from Kang the Conqueror entirely to another villain such as Doctor Victor Von Doom. With Majors' case now going to trial and with the writer's strike preventing script rewrites for so long, the studio has yet to commit to a path forward. The Creative Artists Agency (CAA) dropped Majors pre-arrest due to "brutal conduct," which seems to indicate that Marvel Studios might want to move on from him, regardless of the legal situation.

There is still optimism around the future of Marvel Studios, but certain changes in the formula are clearly needed.

In more Marvel news, the franchise giant is venturing into more mature territory with Echo, which unveiled a moody and violent trailer last Friday. The new series will be the MCU’s first TV-MA rating and the first to debut simultaneously on Disney+ and sister streaming service Hulu. Both Charlie Cox and Vincent D’ONofrio will appear in the show starring as Matt Murdock/Daredevil and Wilson Fiske/Kingpin, respectively. Star Alaqua Cox will reprise her Hawkeye role as Maya Lopez/Echo. Also of note, Echo will premiere under a new banner called Marvel Spotlight; complete with a new intro scored by Oscar winning composer Michael Giacchino and a new logo. This new sub-category of Marvel will focus on standalone properties versus series and movies that connect to the greater Marvel Cinematic Universe. Marvel Spotlight gets its name from an anthology comic book series first introduced by Marvel in 1971, which featured new characters that readers didn’t have to fully commit to over several issues. Echo is setting the stage for a lot of potential trends with Marvel Studios…

Daredevil gets a showrunner and directors, Miss Minutes attacks Loki Instagram, Henry Cavill to star in a Highlander reboot, and FNAF has a scary good box office Nov 01, 2023
    Show notes

In a decisive move, Marvel Studios has already put together a new creative team for Daredevil: Born Again. Dario Scardapane of Netflix’s The Punisher and Amazon’s Jack Ryan is officially the showrunner while Moon Knight and Loki season two co-directors Justin Benson and Aaron Moorehead are stepping up to take charge of the remaining episodes of Daredevil. The show will be an amalgamation of previously shot scenes and episodes as well as new content written by Scardapane. Previous directors Chris Ord and Matt Corman will stay on as executive producers. While in the past we were told the show would have 19 episodes, that now seems unclear according to The Hollywood Reporter.

In a guerrilla marketing move, the official Loki Instagram account became a blank slate following this week’s fourth episode of the second season. The menacing Miss Minutes has taken over the account in the meantime with only one post: a short video of her telling us how it is on an inactive TemPad…and that means access is denied! There’s also a mid-season trailer out and spoilers ABOUND.

The internet might truly melt down with the announcement that Henry Cavill is set to play the legendary sword-wielding Scot in the Lionsgate Highlander reboot. John Wick director Chad Stahelski will be the man behind the camera for the film and Mike Finch has penned the current screenplay draft. Though just off his final season of The Witcher, Cavill has been working at a breakneck pace with Argylle and two Guy Ritchie projects currently in post-production.

Director David Yates has given an update on the Fantastic Beasts Harry Potter spin off franchise, which halted after three of its five planned films were released. Quote: “With Beasts for a minute, it’s all just parked,” Yates told the Inside Total Film podcast. “We got to the end of the third film and we’re all so proud of that movie, and when it went out into the world, we just needed to sort of stop and pause, and take it easy.”

Last week, Disney announced it is delaying the release of its live-action Snow White movie starring Rachel Zegler by a year to March of 2025 and released a first image of Snow White and the seven dwarves. Pixar’s Elio has also been pushed back by more than a year to June of 2025. Disney and Searchlight have also removed Magazine Dreams starring Jonathan Majors from the December 2023 calendar most likely due to Major’s legal situation.

Netflix has announced a new adult animation limited series Carol & The End of the World which stars Martha Kelly as a woman facing the apocalypse. The series was created by Rick and Morty and Community writer Dan Guterman.

Everyone’s favorite merc with the mouth’s third movie starring Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman is potentially being moved from its assigned release date. While Disney normally tries to stick to its release schedule, Deadpool 3 is only half-finished and there isn’t confidence even if the actor’s strike ends soon that production could be brought back together in time to make the deadline. Fans of the MCU may get a reprieve instead of a drought, however, as it is rumored Captain America: Brave New World could take Deadpool’s May 2024 Spot.

In a recent appearance on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, director Matthew Vaughn who has helmed franchises such as Kick Ass and The Kingsman, mentioned that he has had some discussions about potentially being involved in a DC project in the future, saying quote "Never say never, at the moment I'm enjoying creating my own things. The details of the WGA contract have been released and we’re not going to be able to break it all down here, but here are some of the highlights. We’re going to take these a section at a time.

    - Regarding the number of writers on a television or streaming project; at least three writer-producers must be hired on all series. The number of writers will rise on a sliding scale. A six episode series must have at least three writers. A series with 7-12 episodes must include five writers, and a series with 13 or more episodes calls for six writers. These minimum staffing requirements must be enforced unless a series is billed as a single writer series from the beginning. The contract also includes a minimum time of duration of employment for writer-producers - development rooms must exist for a minimum of 20 weeks.

    - On the key issue of residuals, a new formula was agreed upon. Content made for streaming that is viewed by 20% or more of subscribers in the first 90 days of release will trigger bonuses for the writers for both series and films. Foreign residuals were also increased. Residuals for previously made shows that become streaming hits were also addressed and agreed to.

    - Policies were established to govern the use of artificial intelligence, including that AI cannot be used to write or rewrite literary material and all use of it by writers or anyone else must be disclosed. Writers also reserve the right to assert that exploitation of writer’s materials to train AI is prohibited.

    - The contract preserves the policy of ensuring that the vast majority of screenwriters will get a “second step” meaning they can be paid to do at least one rewrite of a draft screenplay.

    - Writers working in groups will receive pension and health contributions up to the relevant cap as though they were a single writer, rather than splitting the applicable cap.
