For the first time since 1980, the grind in Hollywood has come to a near halt as actors in the union SAG-AFTRA officially went on strike last week. The Screen Actors Guild and the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers could not come to an agreement on a contract by the deadline at midnight last Wednesday. Some of the key bargaining aspects are: economic fairness - highlighting what the union says are outdated contract terms coupled with the evolution of the media business, The Union wants increased compensation, and shoring up of funding for health, retirement, and pension plans, as well as increased residuals. Artificial Intelligence - the union states that AI already provides a threat to their work as it can mimic their likenesses, performances, and voices, and are looking for protections that involve compensation and bargaining. Self-taped auditions - These, in the union’s statement, are unregulated and out of control. There is a desire to ensure fair access to work opportunities and protect performers against exploitation.

    Oppenheimer truly dropped the bomb?

Oppenheimer director Christopher Nolan confirmed that the soon-to-be-released film has zero CGI shots. Seems disturbing when you think the movie is about the atomic bomb, but Nolan wants scenes to feel seamless so he used old school movie magic with new technology for IMAX, using forced perspective to film the recreation of the Trinity test, the first-ever test explosion of a nuclear bomb in 1945.

It’s really a play for adults. Not that it’s R-rated, but it’ll focus on some of the trials and tribulations of being 30-something, growing up with Barney—just the level of disenchantment within the generation.”

In a headline-gripping move from James Gunn, actors David Corenswet and Rachel Brosnahan have been cast to lead his Superman: Legacy project. The new Clark Kent and Lois Lane have some heavy lifting to do after fan-favorite Henry Cavill is no longer part of the future DCU. However, with this film slated to be the first official film under Gunn and Peter Safran’s leadership, expectations are sky high. (Pun intended.)

In a rather shocking move, this year Marvel, Netflix, Sony, HBO, and Universal are all declining to host big presentations at this year’s San Diego Comic-con. There are many reasons motivating the departures, Chiefly the uncertainty due to the writer’s strike.

Amid newer movies debuting at the box office, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse is still webbing up huge numbers, crossing $500 million at the global box office and reclaiming the number one spot. This news is coupled by an article from last week citing more than 100 of the artists who worked on the movie left due to unrealistic expectations, working conditions, low pay, and micromanagement.

After a huge rebrand and launch of their streaming service, Warner Bros. Discovery is negotiating a $500 million deal to sell nearly half of its film, tv, and music publishing assets for around $500 million. This seems like an odd way to gain consumer confidence after just launching the MAX brand for streaming. What’s up, Warner Bros.?

Marvel’s newest television property, Secret Invasion, landed on Disney+ last Wednesday. The show quickly garnered praise, but also severe backlash when it was announced that the opening credits were generated by artificial intelligence. Disney announced major shake-ups to its release schedule with far reaching effects to some of the biggest franchises under its belt. Most notably, the Marvel slate has seen a complete overhaul with Phase 5 film Captain America: Brave New World shifting dates from May 3, 2024 to July 26, 2024, which in turn, delays the Thunderbolts to December 20, 2024. Similarly Phase 6 is seeing Blade and The Fantastic Four pushed to February 14, 2025 and May 5, 2025 respectively. Perhaps the biggest impact is both phase-culmination Avenger films being delayed by a full year each, with The Kang Dynasty now eyeing a May 1, 2026 release and Secret Wars set for May 7, 2027.

After languishing in development hell, The Flash is finally set to hit theaters later this week and the film’s press tour is in full sprint! Star Ezra Miller has been noticeably absent, as the studio has focused on marketing and promoting the film itself, rather than its star, which is unsurprising given Miller’s problematic past behavior. While early reviews are positive and there is certainly buzz around the flick, box office projections for its opening are soft at around $70 to $75 million. Director Andy Muscheitti has featured heavily in the film’s promotion and while there won’t be a script until after the writer’s strike ends, he is reportedly the frontrunner for the DCU’s Batman reboot: Batman: The Brave and The Bold.

The Autobots and Maximals rolled out in fine fashion last weekend, taking the top spot at the box office with a $61 million domestic debut. The Transformers sequel/prequel from Creed II director Steven Caple Jr. is a recent series best, beating 2018’s Bumblebee which opened to $21.6 million and 2017’s The Last Knight’s $44.6 million debut.

According to industry insiders, Nintendo and Illumination are reportedly close to finalizing a deal for the next entry in the Nintendo film franchise: The Legend of Zelda. More Nintendo films were a given in the wake of The Super Mario Bros. Movie’s unbridled $1.6 billion success, with many fans clamoring for a Zelda adaptation specifically. Always the shrewd business, Nintendo is apparently aware of the franchise’s potential as the insider reports also suggest that obtaining rights will cost Universal “a pretty penny.”

Ahsoka will begin streaming on Disney+ on August 23rd. (We originally reported a rumor that it would be streaming 8/31).

According to a now deleted Disney Movie Insiders post, the release date for the Star Wars: Ahsoka Disney Plus series has been revealed to be August 31! This is in line with reports coming out of last month’s Star Wars Celebration that the 8-episode limited series would be premiering sometime in late summer. Early backlash from the announced purge has already saved a few titles including the documentary Howard and Marvel series MPower and Marvel’s Voices Rising: The Music of Wakanda Forever.
