What Trailers Will the Super Bowl Bring, Marvel's Wonder Man Series Resumes Filming, Argylle Disappoints Feb 07, 2024
    Show notes

Whatever our reasons for tuning in or out this Super Bowl Sunday, as movie fans, there’s no denying the impact the event has in terms of trailers and TV spots, with Paramount, Universal, and Disney all investing a record $7 million per 30-second Super Bowl spot. Paramount has three spots booked, featuring "Bob Marley: One Love," John Krasinski's "IF," and "A Quiet Place: Day One." Disney is expected to promote its Father's Day release "Inside Out 2" and the trailer for Marvel Studios' sole 2024 release "Deadpool 3,". Universal may feature spots for various films, including "Twisters," "Kung Fu Panda 4," "Monkeyman," and "The Fall Guy." Sony and Warner Bros are notably absent from Super Bowl spots this year, and there's no confirmation from Apple or Netflix about promoting their major projects during the event either.

Despite rumors of its cancellation, Marvel Studios’ Wonder Man series starring Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, is apparently back on track and actively in production according to leaked set photos and footage circulating the web. Production of the series, led by Shang Chi director Destin Daniel Cretton and producer Andrew Guest, began in April but was paused due to last year’s WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes. The images in question tease an in-universe film franchise depicting a marquee with the Wonder Man title card along with the character's logo and emblem. While we are lacking on official details, including a release date, the latest we’ve heard is that the series will fall under the new Marvel Spotlight banner and Sir Ben Kingsley is expected to reprise his role as Trevor Slattery. Unfortunately we learned today that a crew member who was a rigger has sadly died on set after falling from the rafters. The on-set accident did not occur during filming and we certainly share the condolences of the cast and crew.

Although it debuted at the top of the box office, Matthew Vaughn's $200 million would be February blockbuster, Argylle, has not performed well, with an $18 million domestic and $35 million global start, coupled with a C+ CinemaScore. The star-studded ensemble cast failed to attract audiences as predicted by tracking. Despite Apple's substantial financial prowess, these big-budget films, such as Napoleon and Killers of the Flower Moon, are not proving profitable when considering the overall motion picture profit and loss sheet, lacking ancillaries like foreign TV, theme park tie-ins, or cruise ship exploitation, prompting questions about the streamers long-term viability.

During the documentary "Grounded 2: Making The Last of Us Part 2," creative director Neil Druckmann hinted at the possibility of The Last of Us Part 3, revealing that he has a conceptual idea for another chapter in the story. Druckmann emphasized that while the first two games had clear concepts of parental love and the pursuit of justice, the potential third installment would be its own unique narrative. He clarified that a previously mentioned story about Joel's brother, Tommy, was not outlined for The Last of Us Part 3, but rather a separate project that was shelved temporarily due to other priorities at Naughty Dog. Elsewhere in the Last of Us franchise, Schitt’s Creek star Catherine O’Hara has been cast in an undisclosed role for the HBO show’s second season.

Thunderbolts Cast Gets Bigger, DC Has Their Supergirl, The Last of Us Has a Strong Direction, Marvel and Sony Fight Over Spider-Man Jan 31, 2024

There’s been a flurry of casting news surrounding Marvel Studios movie Thunderbolts this week. Top Gun: Maverick and Lessons in Chemistry star Lewis Pullman has an offer to replace Steven Yuen as Sentry after Yuen exited the project due to scheduling issues. Additionally, Geraldine Viswanathan is set to join the film replacing Ayo Edebiri, who is also departing the project due to her schedule. It is also said that audiences can expect to see Rachel Weisz and Laurence Fishbourne in the project portraying their respective MCU characters Melina Vostokoff and Bill Foster.

Our pal James Gunn didn’t leave us hanging this week with his announcement that Milly Alcock was cast as Supergirl. Alcock is best known for playing young Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen on HBO’s House of the Dragon, part of the Game of Thrones universe.

The Last of Us has secured their directing talent for season two and it’s chock-full of award winners. Mark Mylod, who just won an Emmy for his work on the final season of HBO’s Succession; Kate Herron, who directed the first season of the Marvel Studios series Loki; Stephen Williams, nominated for an Emmy for directing on HBO’s Watchmen; and Nina Lopez-Corrado, nominated for an Imagen award for directing on season two of HBO’s Perry Mason.

Will Mom and Dad ever stop fighting? And by Mom and Dad of course we mean…Marvel and Sony. The studio giants are reportedly unable to see eye-to-eye about the direction Tom Holland’s Spider-Man should go in a fourth Spider-man film. Sony is understandably trying to boost their Sonyverse with a crossover event that would include Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield’s Spider-Men, but Marvel sees things differently. Marvel desires that Holland’s Spider-Man continues with a more grounded approach that is intuitive to the character. Multiple Spider-Man appearances were scrapped from the upcoming Madame Web movie that Sony is putting out.

Christopher Nolan's film Tenet will be rereleased in IMAX theaters from February 23 to March 1.

    • The first trailer for the upcoming remake of the 1989 classic film Road House starring Jake Gyllenhaal has been released. The film will debut on March 21.

    • Tom Hollander, a British actor known for performances in Pride & Prejudice, the Pirates of the Caribbean films, The White Lotus, and The Night Manager, spoke on a recent appearance on Late Night With Seth Meyers about a time he was mistakenly sent a box office bonus check meant for Tom Holland for his appearance in Avengers films. Hollander said "“It was an astonishing amount of money. It was not his salary. It was his first box-office bonus. Not the whole box-office bonus, the first one. And it was more money than I’d ever [seen]. It was a seven-figure sum.”

    • A four-issue limited comic series called Darth Vader - Black White & Red will be on sale starting April 25.

    • Colman Domingo will be starring as the legendary singer Nat King Cole in a movie musical from a script he co-wrote, Variety learned exclusively. He will also be making his feature directing debut on the project.

    • After a year-long search for Trevor Noah's replacement on The Daily Show, former longtime host Jon Stewart has agreed to return to host the program. Stewart will appear weekly throughout the 2024 US Presidential election.

    • While speaking to ComicBook.com about her Paramount+ series Special Ops: Lioness, Zoe Saldana said she would be willing to play more superhero roles as long as they didn't require the extensive makeup process used to create her MCU character of Gamora. "If it never gets to happen, or if it happens with other filmmakers, and not James Gunn, or if it happens again with James Gunn, I would be so grateful."

    • Later this year, Marvel Comics will apply their What If...? concept to the Alien franchise. A five-issue run will be released, following the character Carter Burke and what happened after.

Paramount has had recent Star Trek success in the television world, streaming Strange New Worlds, Lower Decks, Picard, and Discovery. Though this prequel may not show the Chris Pine-led cast we are used to seeing, there are still plans to have a final movie with that crew in the future.

We keep talking about Tom Cruise and now for an even bigger announcement…a Top Gun 3 movie is officially in development to bring back that loving feeling. Top Gun: Maverick writer Ethan Kruger is already writing for the new installment and sources report director Joe Kosinski will also be back to pilot the film. • Noah Hawley, the showrunner of the upcoming FX series "Alien," revealed in an interview that the series is set on Earth approximately 70 years in the future, preceding the events of the original film series. Despite discussions with Ridley Scott, Hawley explained that he won't incorporate the backstory from "Prometheus" and "Alien: Covenant" into his series, expressing a preference for the original films' retro-futuristic technology over the more advanced tech featured in the prequels.

Yeun Exits Thunderbolts, 2024 Golden Globes Talk, Star Wars Returns to the Big Screen Jan 10, 2024

Blunderbolts? Marvel Studios’ Thunderbolts has suffered another setback as Variety is reporting that Steven Yeun has exited the project. While The Walking Dead and Invincible star was never officially confirmed to be in the film by Marvel, he was heavily rumored to be playing the role of The Sentry. Said rumors culminated recently when Yeun’s frequent collaborator Robert Kirkman seemingly ousted the casting news during a YouTube live stream. Additionally, Yeun himself commented on his departure, citing scheduling conflicts and a desire to reteam with Marvel on a future project.

Joke’s On You, Jo Koy Sunday night’s 2024 Golden Globes ceremony marked a memorable occasion for the awards organization. Despite host Jo Koy’s distractingly questionable antics, the first awards ceremony independent of the Hollywood Foreign Press managed to get a lot right, subjectively, in terms of the winners. Barbie saw the most nominations of any film and managed to secure two Golden Globes, while Oppenheimer garnered both the best motion picture in the drama category and directing awards for Nolan. In television, Succession and The Bear were named as the best drama and comedy series, respectively. Winners in the acting category include Lily Gladstone, Paul Giamatti, Emma Stone, Robert Downey Jr., Jeremy Allen White, Da’Vine Joy Randolph, Ayo Edebiri, Kieran Culkin, Ali Wong, Steven Yeun, and Matthew Macfadyen.

Echo is now available to stream in its entirety at the time of this recording, but how do we feel about this confirmation? Game of Thrones Gets Animated, WB and Paramount Talk Merger, 2023 Box Office Surprises Jan 03, 2024

Welcome to Multiverse News, Your source for Information about all your favorite fictional universes.

Fans of George R.R. Martin’s epic world of Westeros and beyond got a New Year’s treat when the author announced on his personal blog that the spin-off series Nine Voyages will now be animated rather than live action. Citing budgetary constraints that would have kept the live action show from reaching its full potential, Martin voiced his support for the media move while including that three animated projects are currently on the table though not all are greenlit. Martin also hinted at the possibility of graphic novels.

In a move that absolutely looks to compete with streaming giants Netflix, Hulu, and Disney+, Warner Brothers Discovery and Paramount Gylobal CEOs officially entered talks to merge the two media companies. Both left 2023 with long-term debt loads, but with Warner Bros. market capitalization valued at $28.4 billion, perhaps there’s room for both to turn around and become a real competitor in the wild world of streaming. Burnished into action by the controlling interest in Paramount having already been in talks to sell to Skydance, Warner Brothers Discovery has the opportunity to acquire such film franchises as Terminator, Transformers, Mission: Impossible, Star Trek, and more, as well as Paramount’s television rights including CBS, BET, and MTV to name a few. This feels like an interesting move by Warner Brothers who made a similar acquisition with Discovery back in 2022.

It seemed like it would be the year the box office failed due to the combined writer’s and actor’s strikes, a huge change in streaming trends, as well as audience taste changing. However, this was simply not the case. Among stand-out films like Barbie, Oppenheimer, and Five Nights at Freddy’s as well as franchise films and both Taylor Swift and Beyonce’s concert films, 2023 rang in an impressive $9 billion box office total. The studios that held up best in order of money brought in were Universal ($1.93 billion), Disney ($1.89 billion), and Warner Bros. ($1.4 billion).

Netflix has released the first trailer for Zack Snyder's Rebel Moon Part Two: The Scargiver following the debut of Part One: A Child of Fire. The film will debut on Netflix on April 19, 2024. Part One, A Child of Fire saw a solid debut for Netflix, racking up nearly 24 million views in its first three days of release.

Following the conclusion of What If? Season 2, Marvel released a first look of What If? Season 3 featuring Bucky Barnes and the Red Guardian. As for when Season 3 will drop, the first look simply says, soooon.

Christopher Landon is no longer directing Scream VII. The director dropped out of the feature, capping a tumultuous few months for the embattled project that has included the exits of its two lead actors.

The first episode of “Percy Jackson and the Olympians” brought in 13.3 million viewers in its first six days on Disney+ and Hulu.

“Slow Horses,” the hit Apple TV+ series based on Mick Herron’s spy series of the same name, has been renewed for a fifth season.

As of January 1, 2024, the first iteration of the character of Mickey Mouse dubbed Steamboat Willie officially entered the public domain and is no longer a protected character under copyright laws.

Welcome to Multiverse News, Your source for Information about all your favorite fictional universes

A Marvel Studios spokesperson confirmed to HuffPost that Marvel Studios has parted ways with Kang the Conqueror actor Jonathan Majors, following his highly publicized assault and harassment convictions. Majors has played Kang since 2021 and the character was poised to be the next ‘big bad” for the cinematic multiverse. Recent reports and writer additions suggest Marvel plans to stay the course with the upcoming Avengers: Kang Dynasty still in development.

No stranger to social media, DCU figurehead James Gunn took to Threads to share some insights and clear up confusion regarding the many casting announcements surrounding his upcoming Superman: Legacy. To paraphrase, the filmmaker suggested that ‘pointless cameo porn’ had contributed to superhero fatigue and defended his cast of characters as the opposite, saying that they are all included in the story for a reason, rather than seconds-long Easter egg appearances. Additionally, Gunn alluded to a meeting with his recently cast Lex Luthor, Nicholas Hoult, hinting how their version of the character would be new and unforgettable.

Instead of chocolate, we’re eating crow here, as Wonka defied our expectations and won the box office, as well as won over audiences worldwide in its opening weekend. The Paul King-directed-Timothee Chalamet-starring–holiday-tent pole-musical-prequel danced to the domestic number one spot to the tune of $39 million, contributing to its $151 million global haul.

Critics’ reviews for Zack Snyder’s Rebel Moon Part One: A Child of Fire have hit the internet ahead of its Dec. 21 Netflix debut and the consensus has been overwhelmingly negative; the film currently holds a 26 percent approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Snyder and his films have often been subjects in the emerging conversation surrounding the seeming divide between critics and audiences and the director has already announced a director’s cut with close to an hour of extra content. What, if any, impact do these reviews have on our own anticipation for Rebel Moon Part One, or Part Two for that matter?

    • Deadline is reporting that Marvel Studios has tapped Moon Knight series writer Matthew Orton to take a crack at rewriting Captain America: Brave New World. • While speaking with Entertainment Tonight to promote Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, star Jason Momoa admitted it was unlikely that he’d portray the King of Atlantis again in any future films.

    • HBO announced that Curb Your Enthusiam’s 12th season will be its final, consisting of 10 episodes and premiering February 4th.

    • Per a Bloomberg report detailing the status of Netflix, the streaming platform is developing expansions of its most successful franchises with spin-offs for Extraction, Peaky Blinders, Wednesday, and several others currently in the works.

    • Adult Swim released the first look at Rick and Morty: The Anime. The spin off series will debut sometime in 2024 on Adult Swim and Max.

Other buzzworthy films and shows with many chances to sweep awards are Oppenheimer, The Bear, Killers of the Flower Moon, Only Murders in the Building, Poor Things, and The Crown. OG Avengers Holding Out, Aquaman: The Lost Kingdom is Sunk, Trailers Galore Dec 13, 2023
    Show notes

Welcome to Multiverse News, Your source for Information about all your favorite fictional universes.

During our previous coverage of the much discussed Variety article assessing the state of the MCU, one of the key takeaways was the supposed, fast-tracked plan to reunite the original Avengers line-up onscreen. Despite Variety’s insider sources, this is apparently not the case, as both Captain America, Chris Evans, and Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige cast doubts on the possibility in separate statements last week. Feige addressed Robert Downey, Jr.’s Iron Man specifically, speaking to the finality of the character’s fate, while Evans expressed how protective he was over his own role.

The Internet unleashed an absolute slew of trailers this week; we’ve tabulated a total of seven high profile trailer releases and have narrowed it down to the four we feel most deserving to be featured in this week’s edition of Trailer Park:

    • Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire

    • Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga

    • The Boys Season 4

    • GTA VI

Industry box office predictions for Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom’s domestic opening are not optimistic, with the last gasp of the floundering DCEU expected to pull in a mere $40 million over the 4-day holiday weekend. Warner Bros’ own projections are slightly more generous at $50 million. With that over/under, it’s almost as if they knew about our little wager here.

Chris Evans wasn’t the only Avengers actor to go on record about his protectiveness and ownership of his role; speaking with Collider, Tom Holland indicated while conversations about another Spider-Man film were in the works, he wouldn’t be returning to the role just for the sake of it.

Eli Roth is working on a follow-up to his holiday-slasher, Thanksgiving, which has earned more than $30 million worldwide. The sequel is scheduled for release in 2025.

Warner Brothers is developing a new spinoff of The Big Bang Theory. Although specifics about the setting or characters are not available yet, Chuck Lorre, the show's original creator, will be involved.

The unveiling of the WandaVision box set has brought forth a sneak peek into the behind-the-scenes-making of Agatha Darkhold Diaries. The special features contain cast interviews, glimpses from the series production, and exclusive deleted scenes from WandaVision.

Amazon has unveiled the initial glimpse of Fallout, an upcoming show inspired by the immensely popular video game series. Featuring Walton Goggins, the series is slated to premiere on Prime on April 12, 2024.

HBO revealed the first trailer for Game of Thrones prequel series House of the Dragon Season 2. The eight episode series will debut on Max next summer.

Paramount+ has released its first trailer for season 2 of Halo, the series based on the video game franchise. The series will debut on February 8, 2024.

HBO also premiered a trailer for the fourth season of its anthology crime series, True Detective. Jodie Foster and Kali Reis portray detectives with troubled pasts, delving into the vanishing of eight scientists from an Arctic research base during the months of sunlight deprivation in Alaska.

Robert Downey, Jr. said, during his Variety Actors on Actors interview with fellow Avenger Mark Ruffalo, “I hate it when people poo poo a genre, because they’re all hard and they’re all high art when they’re done well.” Downey, Jr. and Ruffalo mainly discussed their 2023 projects Oppenheimer and Poor Things, respectively.

The Spider-Man Noir series in the works at Prime has added The Punisher’s Steve Lightfoot as showrunner. As previously reported in February, the untitled live action series will follow an older, grizzled superhero in 1930s New York City. An individual with knowledge of the project says that the show will be set in its own universe and the main character will not be Peter Parker.
