Weekly Pep Talk: Rethinking Your Resolutions Jan 01, 2024
    Show notes

    Happy New Year, MWO Community!!!
Today is a fresh start. But so is every day.
Yup, you heard me. Today is no different than ANY other opportunity that you have any other time that the sun rises to make a change in your life.
(This isn't your typical New Years Resolution podcast.)
Today I want to discuss with you the many reasons I believe most New Years Resolutions fail and how you can rethink your own to set yourself up for better success.
As moms, we convince ourselves that our goals aren't important or possible because there's not enough time for us. We overestimate what we should be able to accomplish in a month and underestimate what we could accomplish in a year. Instead of feeling discouraged, I want you to learn to be okay with stacking small wins over time and being in it for the long haul.
What you're so afraid is going to TAKE AWAY from your kids is actually giving back to them in a way that is immeasurable.
But we must be careful, because our kids are always watching us. We must be careful what they hear us say we're going to do. How many times have our children heard us say "I really need to ________" and not follow through?
Don't let your kids grow up watching mom swear every January 1st that she's going to lose 30 pounds.
Don't let your kids grow up watching mom come home miserable from work, swearing she's going to find a job that's better suited for motherhood.
Don't let your kids grow up watching mom put her dreams on the back burner year after year after year after year, all while telling them "you can be anything you set your mind to."
Be what you set your mind to.
    You can do it, mama.
But you HAVE to have a plan.
    You have to take action.
& you can't give up this time.

Late Night Pep Talk: The Gift Dec 18, 2023
    Show notes

So many of you are already stressing to the max about Christmas. You have grocery pick-ups to schedule, stocking stuffers to grab, gift cards to pick up, Elf on the Shelf to manage, travel and calendars to coordinate, AND sitting in so much worry because you just hope, with ALL the effort you've put in that you got the most perfect gifts for your children.
Your pep talk today is to remind you that it's not about all of those gifts.
Because, you see, YOU are the gift.
I know you're trying so hard to make it perfect because of how much you care.
But mama, YOU are the gift. The moment your child, or your children, were born into your arms, they won the lottery of life. They already have the best gift they could ever ask for in YOU.
Take a moment to listen to today's episode as a gentle reminder to slow down, show your children your joy, and truly be present with them. It is a gift they will cherish for their entire lives and something they will work to recreate with their own children.
You're doing an amazing job, mama!

Allie and Kyle's Adoption Story: The Most Incredible Gift Dec 14, 2023
    Show notes

This is such an amazing interview that every mama will love listening to - even if you haven't adopted a child or even considered the possibility. Hearing Allie tell her story is so captivating and opens your eyes to what mothers go through to receive children through adoption.
While I wanted to respect as much privacy as possible for Allie and her family, she was so gracious to share a TON about their story - what led to their decision to adopt, everything they learned about the process, and how they eventually ended up receiving their son.
Allie also provides insight regarding what couples feel as they're navigating the adoption process, how loved ones can show up best for them, and reassurance for any mom that nothing is more important than just living in the moment and taking each experience as it comes.
No matter what motherhood looks like for you - whether your children are biological, fostered, or adopted - this episode is yet another reminder that mama, you're doing an amazing job!

Late Night Pep Talk: You're YOU On Purpose Dec 11, 2023
    Show notes

The motherhood space can be so tough sometimes. We're not very great at admitting our moments of weakness and getting vulnerable with other moms. This can lead to feelings of shame, guilt, and failure when we have less-than-ideal days. I had a super hard day yesterday and wanted to open up with you all about it to remind you you're never alone and it doesn't make you a bad mom...even though in the moment I felt like the worst mom ever.
When we have these moments, we have to begin to stop the thought process in its tracks and analyze where it comes from. Often, it's some deeply rooted comparison or unrealistic expectation we've created in our mind, likely from social media or other mamas that we believe "have it all together" when we just simply...well, we don't. And when you break down that thought pattern, you realize how much of a lie that is.
You can love your children endlessly and still count down to bedtime some days. You can raise your voice, or utilize screen time, or break down in tears...and still be a good mom. And you ARE still a good mom. Because you were perfectly designed for this child, or these children. Everything in your life prepared you for this role and the exact mother they would need. No one is better suited for them than you.
Each day is a fresh start, mama. Listen to this pep talk to remind you how you can learn to let go of those negative thought patterns, fill your own cup back up, and begin a new day with the next sunrise. It's okay to give yourself permission to have hard days. But just remember...you're doing an amazing job.

Relying on Faith to Navigate Anxiety in Motherhood with Courtney Devich Dec 07, 2023
    Show notes

On today's episode of the Moms Working Overtime podcast, we have the opportunity to hear from Courtney Devich, author of Mama's Got Anxiety.
Courtney writes on all things - faith, motherhood, and mental health - as a vulnerable exposure of her own struggles and experiences. On this episode, she shares how anxiety impacts multiple facets of motherhood, how faith helped her understand her own anxiety, and how to overcome feelings of anxiety or worry.
What I love most about Courtney's perspective on anxiety is that it's not something to be "fixed." As moms, we put so much pressure on ourselves to be perfect and when we experience anxiety, we often interpret as a problem to solve. She uses examples from scripture to validate those moments as normal and how to realistically overcome them.

Late Night Pep Talk: Holiday Mindset Dec 04, 2023
    Show notes

There's no definition for "what a good mom does at Christmas." I think we all need to hear this. Those insanely high expectations you have for yourself to provide this picture perfect Christmas experience - from the gifts, to hiding the Elf each night, to the matching family pajamas, or the perfect Christmas card - are all created in our own heads and often result from unfair comparison.
It's the most wonderful time of the year...for everyone except the ones that make the holiday magic happen.
This episode is all about breaking your CURRENT holiday mindset to create a new one. One that serves you and your family much better. One that requires you to say "no" to some things. Because each time we say "no" to someone else, we get to say "yes" to ourselves and our family. Often, the areas we're so afraid to fall short on around the holidays aren't even things that make or break the experience of it all for our children.
I bring this entire episode together by sharing four things to help you survive the holiday with less stress as a mom. I know this is exactly what you need to hear as we head into the holidays. And remember, mama...
    You're doing an amazing job.

Awakening the Mama Bear in Us All to Prevent Child Sex Abuse with Adrianne Simeone Nov 30, 2023
    Show notes

Facing the ugly of today's world when it comes to things like child sex abuse can make us feel uncomfortable, or unsettled, as moms. Often, it can make us fearful or cultivate feelings of denial. "That will never happen to my child."
The harsh reality is that it does happen, and as moms it is our responsibility to empower ourselves with knowledge and strategies for preventing child sex abuse. We each have a superpower - that "mama bear" - inside of us that instinctually equips us to protect our children.
I was so grateful for the opportunity to bring Adrianne Simeone, author of "My Body is Special and Private" and founder of The Mama Bear Effect, a nonprofit charitable organization committed to the prevention of child sex abuse, on the Moms Working Overtime podcast. Adrianne works tirelessly to spread awareness, research, educate, and provide resources to both professionals and families regarding child sex abuse prevention.
    On this episode, we discuss:
    - Strategies you can use to prevent a predator from gaining access to your child
    - How to teach your children about consent and body safety
    - How to initiate conversations with other parents about your stance on body safety
    - Navigating play dates and sleepovers
    - Posting about your children on social media
    - Approaching conversations with your children in a way that builds trust
    - How to help a child, and yourself, heal after sexual abuse
    - How to join the cause
    - ...and so much more!
Adrianne is a wealth of knowledge and her organization is doing incredible work to help prevent this epidemic. Here are some of the resources she references in the episode:
