A lot of coaches avoid the topic of marriage, it's too personal and they don't want to be involved.

I'm one of those coaches that's with you for the long term. Your relationship has a direct effect on your business whether you'd like to admit it or not, so, I don't avoid it.

You will not sustain momentum in your business if you can't sustain momentum in your marriage. Let that sink in.

As entrepreneurs, when things get overwhelming in our business, one of the places we will always sacrifice first is our marriage and relationships. Your marriage is the most foundational relationship in your life. If you can improve things at the foundation, everything else will get better.

I want you to know that any attempt to be anything other than yourself is just going to cause you more pressure and noise.

I spent way too long pretending to be somebody else and hiding who I really was. I can tell you from first-hand experience that every challenge you have has created a massive strength on the other side.

Be true to yourself to create the success you really want.

452 - You Must Measure Momentum Mar 13, 2019

I've tried to record this podcast multiple times over the past few months. It's been a hard episode to record because it's tough to share pain and be vulnerable.

A few years back I was doing so much. I was speaking at events and connecting with entrepreneurs, but not actually receiving results. I was confusing the activities I was doing and the attention I was receiving with momentum. I was feeling productive but I wasn't really being productive or getting measurable results. I woke up one morning and realized that I needed to start applying my own content and measure if I was actually making an impact.

If you want to be in momentum you need three things. You need to have a clear outcome, clear accountability and a scoreboard that matters.

If you're in that place right now where you're confused and frustrated because you're doing the activities, you're doing all the things you feel like you should be doing but you're not getting into momentum, you are not alone.

You need to figure out where you're going and get a scoreboard in place as soon as possible.

451 - Why I Don't "do coffee" Mar 12, 2019

I want to give you permission to stop "doing coffee"

As you start creating success and gaining attention, you're met with an endless stream of requests to meet for casual interactions like coffee dates. Possibly it could be an opportunity to collaborate but, most likely, it's going to be an unnecessary distraction for you.

It's okay to say no, or, to ask for the details of what you're actually going to be meeting about so you can prioritize if this meeting is actually going to be beneficial to you.

This doesn't mean that you shouldn't spend time with other people. I spend a ton of time with other people, but, it's strategic, pre-planned, intentional time that going to achieve an outcome.

You don't want to get caught up in fake momentum. Your time is your most valuable asset, don't waste it.

If your team is overwhelmed, your company is at risk. When your team is overwhelmed everything slows down. When your team is overwhelmed conflict goes up. When your team is overwhelmed, problem-solving skills go down. If you keep your team in a state of overwhelm, you're going to get way less out of all of them. If you leave it too long, they will leave. I know because I've lost some incredible people in the past because they eventually broke.

449 - Process Is Not An Imposition Mar 07, 2019

I think it's natural to be resistant to process but you also need to understand and recognize that it's near impossible to scale a business effectively, long term, without actually creating process documentation.

Everywhere area you're investing time, effort, energy and money should have processes built around them.

You may feel that implementing processes can be an imposition but for your team, they crave it! It gives them predictability and makes them feel safe and confident that they can complete their job.

If you don't have processes in place you will always be exposed. The same mistakes will continue to happen and you will continue to miss the same things every time.

Stop fighting process, you don't need to. Process is going to liberate you. The earlier you put processes in place the better. Process in business will help you scale far faster and with less pain and anxiety.

448 - Gossip Kills Momentum Mar 06, 2019

Gossip is one of the most destructive forces in any organization.

Gossip slows everything down.

I suggest that everyone has a no-gossip policy in their business, but you have to understand that adhering to this policy has to come from the top.

In the business, I ran when I was younger, I was one of the biggest sources of gossip there was. When I look back with perspective, I can see why the people I worked with didn't feel safe and why I didn't feel safe.

You have to be the best example of the no-gossip policy in your business.

A company where gossip is part of the culture is damaging for leadership and for team members. A company where gossip is part of the culture will have a hard time growing.

In my career, I've been fortunate enough to have hired a lot of true believers. But you have to maintain and improve the true believer status or they may turn against you.

I want you to attract true believers and learn how to keep them. If you develop your true believers properly your business will explode.

Your best people want to win, they want you to win. They need to know where the company is going. They need to communicate within a system that's safe and predictable and the need clear scoreboards so everyone has perspective about what's going on.

Awesome companies don't just exist on their own. Awesome companies come about when you have incredible people who all decide to work in the same place.

I didn't always understand this, especially when I first started growing businesses and it damaged my growth. I don't want that to happen to you.

You need systems in place to nurture and grow your people. Here's a simple way to make sure the people on your team are getting the attention they need. Have regular weekly check-ins.

445 - Choreograph Your Meetings Mar 01, 2019

If you don't have a clear structure of how your meetings run, things get confusing very quickly.

The people on your team are not going to understand the outcomes and you're going to lose time in your organization.

The way to fix this is to have a set structure that can be repeated over and over again for all your meetings.

The more effort you put into setting up communication structures, the faster the people on your team will understand where they're going.

People need to communicate with each other effectively to achieve joint goals. Put in place systems that facilitate fast, effective and clear communication, these are the systems that change everything.
