Change is hard and it takes a long-ass time, so let that be a sign to figure out what your personal goals are, how to get what you want and need, and focus your attention there. Slow progress compounds, and by 2027, you might be surprised at just how much you’ve accomplished.

MOTM #694: The Slingshot Slowdown Dec 08, 2025

If you want to do some serious growing, you’re going to have to slow down for a time. It’s like a slingshot—you’ve gotta pull the rubberneck backwards before there’s any forward acceleration. Slowing down can feel like losing, so before you quit in the slow down, make sure you give yourself enough time and a big enough safety net to hold on until you pick up speed again.

Are you selling out by selling on Black Friday? Maybe! Like all things in online business and life, there’s nuance here, but ultimately it boils down to the way you run your business the other 364 days of the year. Yes, consumer culture is toxic, but we can’t take it down by pretending it doesn’t exist, and commerce isn’t going anywhere either. So you can sell—I probably will in my own way—but make sure you’re keeping your people in mind, not just your profits.

The Boss Babes and the Brochachos of the online business space just keep spewing bullshit about what it takes to succeed, and I can’t sit idly by and let people think they’re telling the truth. There are people who would treat online business like a pyramid scheme, but there is a better way—a way that doesn’t involve scamming or lying to people, and selling a path to “success” that isn’t real. I want every single one of us to succeed, and I also am committed to being honest about what it looks like on the back end of online business which means setting realistic expectations. That way, you won’t quit before you can even get going.

I don’t know if you’ve noticed, but the internet sucks now. And when I say the “internet” what I really mean is Instagram and Threads. The algorithm only rewards either rage bait or meaningless slop, and I’m not having fun the way I used to online. But social media isn’t going anywhere and it’s also an important element of running an online business. So while social media may suck, we’ve got to find a way to use it that feels right.
