Latest Episodes:

Date, time, and ticket info for Gonzaga's Kraziness in the Kennel, plus a look at two 2024 targets Sep 15, 2022

Show notes

Mark Few and the Gonzaga Bulldogs coaching staff have their sights on a pair of 2024 prospects from Prolific Prep High School in Napa, guard Paul McNeil and center Yves Missi.

Today's episode begins with Sports Illustrated's Jason Jordan discussing McNeil - who was the Gatorade Player of the Year in North Carolina as a sophomore, and Missi - a rim-running center with an intense motor and excellent footwork. It's too early for guesses as to where each guy is going to go, but Jordan explains why they would make a great fit at Gonzaga if Few and his staff can convince them to come up to Spokane.

After that, Andy goes solo and discusses Kraziness in the Kennel, including date, time, and ticket information, as well as the men's basketball roster release, with some new jersey numbers and a new walk-on, guard Kellen Mitchell.

Finally, the show ends with discussion about Gary Bell, who landed a job as an assistant coach at Northern Arizona University at the recommendation of both Few and Arizona coach Tommy Lloyd. Bell is now the fourth former Zag player with a D-1 assistant coach gig, along with Stephen Gentry, Brian Michaelson, and former guest of the show Kyle Bankhead.

Gonzaga Bulldogs in the NBA season preview: Orlando Magic guard Joel Ayayi Sep 13, 2022

Show notes

The NBA season is nearly here, and as many as 10 Gonzaga Bulldogs could suit up for various NBA squads this year, a testament to the high level recruiting and player development Mark Few's program has going on in Spokane. Today's episode is a preview of the latest Zag to sign an NBA contract, Joel Ayayi, who will reunite with Jalen Suggs on the Orlando Magic.

We discuss Ayayi's history, going from redshirt/bench player to All-WCC performer while at Gonzaga, going undrafted in 2021 and bouncing around franchises, and his newest contract in Orlando.

We also take a look at the best and worst case scenarios for Ayayi entering his second professional season with still no guarantee he'll stick around at the NBA, or even G-League, level. We also evaluate what his season might look like, how his role and production will shake out, and why it might make sense for him to look overseas if he can't find a steady foothold in the states.

Previewing the Big East Conference, and a look at how the Gonzaga Bulldogs might fit in the future Sep 09, 2022

Show notes

The Gonzaga Bulldogs are still members of the West Coast Conference, but all this talk about conference realignment has reignited conversation about Mark Few's program potentially joining the Big East in the near future. Could the little school from Spokane end up competing alongside the likes of Creighton, Villanova, Butler, Xavier, and Seton Hall in the coming years?

Joining me today to discuss these rumors is Matt DeMarinis, a writer and podcaster for White and Blue Review, a website dedicated to all things Creighton Bluejays. Matt and I discuss what a move to the Big East might look like for the Bulldogs, and how it could impact more than just the men's and women's basketball programs.

Matt and I also discuss Creighton's performance last year, and the performance of incoming sophomore Ryan Nembhard, the younger brother of former Gonzaga point guard Andrew Nembhard. Will the Bluejays meet their lofty preseason expectations? If not, who is the favorite to win the Big East? Matt discusses new head coaches Kyle Neptune, Thad Matta, and Sean Miller as well as Ed Cooley's job at Providence and whether UConn's bark is worse than their bite.

Gonzaga Bulldogs in the NBA season preview: Wizards forward Rui Hachimura Sep 08, 2022

Show notes

The NBA season is nearly here, and as many as 10 Gonzaga Bulldogs could suit up for various NBA squads this year, a testament to the high level recruiting and player development Mark Few's program has going on in Spokane. Today's episode is a preview of one of Gonzaga's most decorated NBA stars, Washington Wizards forward Rui Hachimura.

We discuss Hachimura's history, going from garbage time player to 20 point per game scorer with the Zags, and eventually getting selected ninth overall in the 2019 NBA draft. We look at the first three seasons of his NBA career, including his performance in the Tokyo Olympics and his absence last year for mental health issues.

We also take a look at the best and worst case scenarios for Rui entering his fourth NBA season and his final year of his rookie contract. We evaluate what his fourth season might look like, how his role and production will shake out, and which other teams may covet him at the trade deadline or in free agency next year if Washington doesn't re-sign him.

How we evaluate head coaches as recruiters, and a look at recruiting in the West Coast Conference Sep 06, 2022

Show notes

Mark Few and the Gonzaga Bulldogs may still dominate the West Coast Conference, but coaches like Randy Bennett at Saint Mary's and Lorenzo Romar at Pepperdine are bringing in high level recruits, keeping this conference relevant in the west coast college basketball landscape.

Jason Jordan of Sports Illustrated joins the show to discuss the incoming freshmen on both Saint Mary's and Pepperdine's teams, which includes an excellent addition in Aidan Mahaney for the Gaels and USC transfer Boubacar Coulibaly for the Waves. Jason looks at each of these programs and what kind of impact they will have in year one.

Segment two is a longer look at what makes a head coach a good recruiter, with Jason offering his opinion on the matter as well as multiple stories involving Coach K, Levelle Morton, GG Jackson, Corey Kispert, and more! The guys discuss Dana Altman's success as a recruiter but struggles on the court, and how a coach like Bennett can sell his program compared to a juggernaut like Duke, Gonzaga, or North Carolina.

Finally, we end the show with discussion about the NCAA's new transfer portal and what things still need to be done in order to prevent some serious windfall in the college hoops landscape in the coming years.

Show notes

The Gonzaga women's basketball program has seen 10 players depart in the past two seasons, making it a need for coach Lisa Fortier to find some experience via the NCAA transfer portal. Enter Brynna Maxwell, a graduate transfer who averaged 10+ points per game in each of the past three seasons with the Utah Utes.

Maxwell joins the program today to discuss her decision to leave Utah and come to Spokane and join the Bulldogs, and what her first few weeks at Gonzaga have been like so far.

We also hear her explain her strengths on the basketball floor, the potential to have her do more post-up work this season, her excitement about playing Stanford and BYU, and of course the team's trip to the Bahamas for the Battle 4 Atlantis.

Finally, Brynna discusses her overall experience in the transfer portal, how she feels about NIL after one year in practice, and her favorite places in Spokane.

Analyzing the incoming freshmen on Gonzaga's non-conference opponents this upcoming season Aug 30, 2022

Show notes

Mark Few and the Gonzaga Bulldogs are set to take on an excellent crop of teams during the 2022-23 season, including Kentucky, Baylor, Alabama, Texas, and Michigan State.

Each of those teams secured high level recruits in the class of 2022, and Jason Jordan of Sports Illustrated joins the show to discuss the incoming freshmen for these programs and what kind of impact they will have in year one.

Show notes

Former Gonzaga Bulldogs big man Chet Holmgren may have suffered a torn ligament in his foot while defending LeBron James at Jamal Crawford's Crawsover Pro-Am on Saturday, putting the Oklahoma City Thunder rookie in jeopardy of beginning the season healthy.

Today's episode discusses Holmgren's injury, potential timeline to return to the court, and the less than optimal way fans have reacted to this news since it broke.
