WCC head coach power rankings: Gonzaga's Mark Few is first, but who are 2-9? Oct 05, 2022

Show notes

Mark Few and the Gonzaga Bulldogs are set for another outstanding season in the West Coast Conference, which continues to boast some of the strongest programs and head coaches in the country. But when trying to rank the coaches in the WCC, it can get a little tricky - outside of Few and Randy Bennett of course.

Joining me today to attempt to create a WCC head coach power rankings is Tucky Clarry, a writer at FanSided and the Slipper Still Fits and podcaster with New Bloods.

Tuck and I each rank all 10 head coaches in the WCC, discussing everything from Shantay Legans' success in year one at Portland, how to evaluate a rookie head coach like Chris Gerlufsen, why Herb Sendek is so underrated, and what we think of heralded newcomer Steve Lavin.

Gonzaga Bulldogs 2022-23 season preview: Freshman forward Braden Huff Oct 04, 2022

Show notes

The college basketball season is nearly back, and Mark Few's Gonzaga Bulldogs are primed for another deep run into the NCAA Tournament. This year's squad features a ton of talent, including fan favorites, solid veterans, young guys looking to prove something, and incoming transfers ready to make an impact right away.

The group only has one freshmen though, a forward from Illinois named Braden Huff. In today's episode, we discuss how Huff ended up going from backup point guard as a freshman in high school to Mr. Illinois - awarded to the best player in the state.

Then, we talk about Huff's best and worst case scenarios for his freshman year. He may not see much of the court, but playing time doesn't tell much of the story for Huff - instead it will be how he matures, both physically and mentally, and prepares for a more impactful year two.

We discuss that second year in the final segment, looking at what Huff's career might look like in Spokane even if we don't see much of it in year one.

How Mark Few's coaching style could impact the Gonzaga Bulldogs lineup and rotation in 2022 Oct 03, 2022

Show notes

The Gonzaga Bulldogs have perhaps the most talented roster in program history heading into the 2022-23 season, giving Mark Few an incredibly tough, and envious, task of finding the perfect starting lineup and rotation to bring an NCAA championship to Spokane.

Today's episode is a mailbag, discussing Gonzaga's potential starting lineup and Few's willingness to make adjustments in the early part of the season. We also discuss who will be more impactful, Anton Watson or Efton Reid, while looking at the non-conference schedules for the men's and women's programs and how that could impact March Madness seeding.

Finally, we end the show with discussion about new walk-on Kellen Mitchell and if he will have a role following the departures of Matthew Lang and Will Graves, and what Marco Gonzales' role will be for the Seattle Mariners, who punched a ticket to the playoffs for the first time in 20 years.

Mark Few and the Gonzaga Bulldogs will take on the Tennessee Volunteers in an exhibition game Oct 01, 2022

Show notes

Mark Few and the Gonzaga Bulldogs will take on Rick Barnes and the Tennessee Volunteers in an exhibition game in Frisco Texas, near Drew Timme's hometown, on October 28. Few's willingness to take this small school in Spokane and have them face anyone, anywhere, at any time is exactly what will the program ascend to the national championship level they are so close to achieving.

The second segment is a look at Timme's recent comments to FS1's John Fanta, where he admits he will make more money through NIL than he likely would have as an NBA player this season, a great sign for the health of college basketball going forward, especially when you consider Oscar Tshiebwe, Armando Bacot, Hunter Dickinson, and Trayce Jackson-Davis all made similar decisions.

Finally, we end the show with discussion about former Zag Aaron Cook's first professional contract in Cyprus, and Chet Holmgren's recent response to those criticizing him for participating in a pro-am event this summer, which led to his season-ending foot injury.

Gonzaga Bulldogs in the NBA season preview: Memphis Grizzlies forward Brandon Clarke Sep 29, 2022

Show notes

The NBA season is nearly here, and as many as 10 Gonzaga Bulldogs could suit up for various NBA squads this year, a testament to the high level recruiting and player development Mark Few's program has going on in Spokane. Today's episode is a discussion about Brandon Clarke, who is entering his fourth NBA season and the final year of his rookie contract with the Memphis Grizzlies.

We discuss Clarke's history, how he went from being a backup at San Jose State to the most productive player in all of college basketball with the Zags in 2018-19, why he fell in the 2019 NBA draft, and how his first three NBA seasons have gone in Memphis.

We also take a look at the best and worst case scenarios for Clarke entering his fourth season. He's expected to step into a starting role while Jaren Jackson Jr is out with an injury, and how he does in that role will determine a lot about how the rest of his season goes, how the Grizzlies do overall, and what his potential free agency could look like if Memphis doesn't give him an extension.

Gonzaga Bulldogs in the NBA season preview: San Antonio Spurs forward Zach Collins Sep 27, 2022

Show notes

The NBA season is nearly here, and as many as 10 Gonzaga Bulldogs could suit up for various NBA squads this year, a testament to the high level recruiting and player development Mark Few's program has going on in Spokane. Today's episode is a discussion about Zach Collins, who is entering his fifth NBA season and first full year with Gregg Popovich and the San Antonio Spurs.

We discuss Collins' history, how he went from being Gonzaga's first five-star recruit and first one-and-done to a starter for the Blazers and now a key piece for San Antonio.

We also take a look at the best and worst case scenarios for Collins entering his fifth NBA season and first full season with the Spurs. We talk about what his role is likely going to look like, with Jakob Poetl and Keldon Johnson likely occupying starting roles. Will he be the third big like he was in Spokane? Will his outside shooting continue to tick up? And can he handle a facilitator role like he had last season, or will turnovers continue to be an issue for the 24-year-old?

Gonzaga Bulldogs in the NBA season preview: Utah Jazz forward Kelly Olynyk Sep 22, 2022

Show notes

The NBA season is nearly here, and as many as 10 Gonzaga Bulldogs could suit up for various NBA squads this year, a testament to the high level recruiting and player development Mark Few's program has going on in Spokane. Today's episode is a discussion about Kelly Olynyk, who was traded from the Detroit Pistons to the Utah Jazz on Thursday in a deal for Bojan Bogdanovic.

We discuss Olynyk's history, how he went from bench player to All-American at Gonzaga, his time in Boston and Miami, his electric performance with the Houston Rockets in 20-21, and last year with the Detroit Pistons.

We also take a look at the best and worst case scenarios for Olynyk entering his tenth NBA season and his first with the Utah Jazz. We talk about what his role is likely going to look like. Will he be a starter again in Utah? Is replacing Rudy Gobert good or bad for his career? What role will he have with rookie Walker Kessler? And, of course, is he a potential trade candidate for this rebuilding, cost-cutting Utah squad?

Learn more about the Australian prospect Mark Few and the Gonzaga Bulldogs have their eye on Sep 20, 2022

Show notes

The Gonzaga Bulldogs coaching staff made a trip out to Australia to check out Alex Toohey at the NBA Global Academy, a prospect being targeted by Randy Bennett and the Saint Mary's Gaels, among many other programs. Could Mark Few land himself his first big international recruit in the post-Tommy Lloyd era?

Joining me today is Jason Jordan of Sports Illustrated to discuss Toohey's game and how they evaluate international prospects at these new academies. Jordan also discusses 2023 guard AJ Johnson and 2025 guard Jeremiah Fears, and how each are respectively similar to Jalen Suggs and Andrew Nembhard in their own way.

Finally, we end the show with discussion about the NBA and NBPA potentially adding back the high school straight to the NBA pipeline, and what that means for college basketball, NIL, the G-League, and the top high school players in the country. A riveting discussion on a key topic in college hoops these days.

Determining the factors that make up an NCAA Championship team, and where Gonzaga has come up short Sep 19, 2022

Show notes

The Gonzaga Bulldogs have come so close to perfecting the recipe to win an NCAA college basketball national championship, but Mark Few and the players have continued to fall just short. Is there a perfect mix of things out there the Zags need to put together in order to bring a trophy to Spokane?

Today's episode is a look at three listener submitted questions, each meriting their own segment. Segment one is a look at what it takes to win a national championship, is it high-level recruiting, peaking at the right time, schedule consideration, youth, experience, or sheer dumb luck?

Segment two is a discussion about recruiting in the state of Washington, with analysis on the ten highest rated recruits in the state's history dating back to 2000. None of them went to Gonzaga, but guys like Gary Bell, Steven Gray, Corey Kispert, and of course Adam Morrison outplayed them in college, so what does that mean?

Finally, we end the show with discussion about how greed has impacted the NCAA, notably discussing conference realignment, NIL and how the NCAA enforces it, and Greg Sankey's desire to potentially get rid of the automatic qualifier in the NCAA Tournament, a wildly unpopular idea that thankfully won't gain much steam.

Gonzaga Bulldogs in the NBA season preview: Memphis Grizzlies forward Killian Tillie Sep 16, 2022

Show notes

The NBA season is nearly here, and as many as 10 Gonzaga Bulldogs could suit up for various NBA squads this year, a testament to the high level recruiting and player development Mark Few's program has going on in Spokane. Today's episode is a preview of Memphis Grizzlies forward Killian Tillie, who earned a guaranteed contract last season and is entering his third year in the pros.

We discuss Tillie's history, going from fourth big as a freshmen to making the game-winning free throws in the Final 4 that season, as well as his excellent shooting performance in Las Vegas as a sophomore, and his injury-riddled but still excellent junior and senior seasons.

We also take a look at the best and worst case scenarios for Tillie entering his third professional season. Will his outside shot materialize at the NBA level, and if not, what does that mean for his future? Memphis drafted and signed multiple bigs with outside shooting abilities, which could be problematic for Tillie's quest to find consistent playing time with the Grizzlies this season.
