Why the Big East commissioner's comments are a good sign for the Gonzaga Bulldogs Oct 19, 2022

Show notes

Big East commissioner Val Ackerman spoke about conference realignment on Tuesday, expressing confidence in the current member schools but hinting that expansion could happen when the league negotiates a new media rights deal in 2025. Ackerman also indicated the league had informal discussions with multiple schools, of which Mark Few and the Gonzaga Bulldogs almost certainly are included. But will the distance from Spokane, Washington to the other member schools be a hurdle too difficult to overcome? And will the Zags wait that long while still in the WCC?

Today's show also discusses Corey Kispert's second season in Washington, where he will miss a few weeks with an ankle injury. What will his role look like when he returns? We close out the show discussing Jalen Suggs, who is amazingly healthy enough to play in game one despite a nasty knee injury suffered in preseason. Is this the year Suggs fully breaks out and becomes an All-NBA defensive player?

Examining the case for the Gonzaga Bulldogs to be No. 1 in the 2022-23 AP Poll Oct 18, 2022

Show notes

The Gonzaga Bulldogs came in second in the first AP Poll of the 2022-23 college basketball season, behind the North Carolina Tar Heels. Is their fatigue around Mark Few's program, who returns three starters and added a star transfer in Malachi Smith? We discuss where Gonzaga should have been in the AP Poll, and take a look at the resumes for the Tar Heels and the Houston Cougars.

The second segment is a look at Gonzaga's non-conference schedule, which includes four games against top 25 opponents with a fifth potentially coming in the PK85 championship. Between those tough matchups, an exhibition against No. 11 Tennessee, and tough battles with Michigan State and Washington on the docket, is this the hardest schedule the Zags have ever had?

Finally, we close out the show chatting with Sports Illustrated's Jason Jordan, who gives us a look at 2025 prospect Nik Khamenia, who was at Kraziness in the Kennel, as well as Dedan Thomas, who is taking an official visit to Spokane in November.

How the Gonzaga Bulldogs can be an elite defensive team, even without Chet Holmgren Oct 17, 2022

Show notes

The Gonzaga Bulldogs are less than two weeks away from taking on Tennessee in the first exhibition game of the season, which should be a great one for Mark Few and the fans in Spokane.

Today's episode is a mailbag, and the first segment is dedicated entirely to discussing Gonzaga's defense, specifically now that Chet Holmgren is gone. Will Efton Reid step into a rim protection role? How can the guards help improve the team's defense?

The second segment discusses a variety of topics, including Gonzaga's future in the WCC, comparisons to the 20-21 team, and a look at international trips during the offseason.

Finally, we end the show with discussion about Killian Tillie's free agency, Brandon Clarke's new contract, and the Lady Zags ahead of what should be a great season for Lisa Fortier's team.

Gonzaga Bulldogs in the NBA season preview: Sacramento Kings forward Domantas Sabonis Oct 14, 2022

Show notes

The NBA season is nearly here, and as many as 10 Gonzaga Bulldogs could suit up for various NBA squads this year, a testament to the high level recruiting and player development Mark Few's program has going on in Spokane. Today's episode is a discussion about Domantas Sabonis, who is entering his first full season with the Sacramento Kings after getting traded from Indiana at midseason.

We discuss Sabonis' history, how he ended up at Gonzaga and blossoming into a superstar against Utah in the 2016 NCAA Tournament, as well as his disastrous rookie season in OKC, the trade to Indiana, and his emergence as a two-time All-Star with the Pacers.

We also take a look at the best and worst case scenarios for Sabonis entering the season with the Kings. Will he manage to make the All-Star team again, this time in the very top-heavy Western Conference? How will he gel with De'Aaron Fox over a full season? What about rookie forward Keegan Murray?

We close out the show discussing his expected production in Sacramento, as well as his legacy as a Zag and the program's elite international recruiting.

Gonzaga Bulldogs 2022-23 season preview: Guard Malachi Smith Oct 13, 2022

Show notes

The college basketball season is nearly back, and Mark Few's Gonzaga Bulldogs are primed for another deep run into the NCAA Tournament. This year's squad features a ton of talent, including fan favorites, solid veterans, young guys looking to prove something, and incoming transfers ready to make an impact right away.

Perhaps the biggest acquisition this offseason is Chattanooga transfer guard Malachi Smith. Smith began his career as a backup at Wright State, and is now primed to take on a big role for the No. 1 team in the country. His history, and how we got here, is discussed in the first segment.

Then, we talk about Smith's best and worst case scenarios for his first year in Spokane. Will his ridiculous efficiency translate at a higher level, especially with better teammates around him? And can he handle primary point guard duties when Nolan Hickman is on the bench?

We discuss his realistic role and expectations in the final segment, along with a conversation about his potential pro career and whether NBA teams will give him a look or not.

Gonzaga Bulldogs 2022-23 season preview: Center Efton Reid Oct 12, 2022

Show notes

Reid came to Gonzaga after one somewhat disappointing season under Will Wade at LSU. We talk about Reid's history, going from promising high school talent, to efficient but underutilized freshman at LSU, to coming to Gonzaga before Drew Timme made his decision.

Then, we talk about Reid's best and worst case scenarios for his first year in Spokane. Will a completely different offense and a brand new role show us a different version of Reid? Will he be ready to take on a starting role in 2023? How much will he play alongside Drew Timme this year?

We discuss his realistic role and expectations in the final segment, along with a conversation about his future in Spokane and if an NBA career is in the cards for the young big.

Predicting the Gonzaga Bulldogs 2022-23 lineup and rotation following Kraziness in the Kennel Oct 10, 2022

Show notes

Gonzaga Bulldogs fans in Spokane got a chance to see Mark Few's team in action on Saturday at the McCarthey Athletic Center for the annual Kraziness in the Kennel event. It marked the beginning of the Zags quest to bring a national championship to Spokane, and featured the first glimpses of Efton Reid and Malachi Smith in a GU uniform.

Today's episode is a mailbag, discussing what we saw (and heard) at Kraziness and how it could impact playing time this upcoming season. Dominick Harris said he is cleared to play on Monday, and his return will be a big factor in how the guard rotation shakes out this year.

We take a look at the frontcourt in the second segment, detailing Kaden Perry's health and the potential playing time for Reid and Anton Watson, as well as concerns about free throw shooting.

Finally, we end the show with discussion about Colby Brooks, a walk-on who played well on Saturday, as well as Gonzaga's starting lineup and the lack of recruits in the classes of 2023 and 2024 and if that is a concern.

Show notes

Mark Few and the Gonzaga Bulldogs have agreed to a six-year series against John Calipari's Kentucky Wildcats, with neutral site contests in Seattle and Nashville and the finale at the McCarthey Athletic Center in Spokane in 2027.

Today's episode discusses this unprecedented series, and how great it is not just for the Zags and Cats but for college basketball as a whole.

In the second segment we look at the WCC preseason rankings and All-WCC nominees. The Zags were unanimously selected to finish first in the conference, with three players - Drew Timme, Julian Strawther, and Rasir Bolton - selected to make the All-WCC squad.

Gonzaga Bulldogs 2022-23 season preview: Guard Rasir Bolton Oct 06, 2022

Show notes

The elder statesman of the group is Rasir Bolton, who grad transferred to Gonzaga last year but will use his final year of eligibility to return for one more go-round in Spokane. We talk about Bolton's history, first at Penn State and then at Iowa State for two years, as well as his impact on the Zags last season and as a philanthropist in the Spokane community.

Then, we talk about Bolton's best and worst case scenarios for his freshman year. Can his high level efficiency from last season stick for another year? Or will he revert back to being just an average three point shooter, which could cost him playing time in a loaded backcourt?

We discuss his realistic role and expectations in the final segment, along with a conversation about his potential pro career and whether NBA teams will give him a look or not.
