Analyzing why the Gonzaga Bulldogs have been quiet on the recruiting trail this offseason Jul 29, 2022

Show notes

Mark Few and the Gonzaga Bulldogs have been quiet on the recruiting front this off-season, although they recently made an offer to 2024 point guard Dedan Thomas from Liberty High School - same school as Julian Strawther.

Will Gonzaga's quiet recruiting season continue, and how much does the transfer portal, NIL, and COVID-19 eligibility play a part?

Today's episode is a discussion on those topics, as well as a look at new contracts signed by Zag legends Kevin Pangos (Italy) and Josh Perkins (Israel). Finally, we say goodbye to Steven Gray, who retired after an excellent 11-year career spent primarily overseas.

Why Malachi Smith is a perfect fit for the 2022-23 Gonzaga Bulldogs Jul 28, 2022

Show notes

Mark Few will have a lot of very tough lineup decisions to make next season with the Gonzaga Bulldogs, who have more than enough talented players in the front-court and backcourt for the Spokane squad. Will Few rely more on the veteran guards, Rasir Bolton and Malachi Smith? What happens to freshman big man Braden Huff? What about Dominick Harris coming off an injury?

Today's episode is wedding themed as we discussed something old (Bolton) something new (Huff) something borrowed (Smith) and something blue (Harris).

Damian Lillard's new basketball camp could help the Gonzaga Bulldogs land a priority recruit Jul 27, 2022

Show notes

The Gonzaga Bulldogs coaching staff is hot on the recruiting trail, checking out multiple high-level prospects in the class of 2023. Xavier Booker listed the Zags in his top-ten, while priority recruit Kaden Cooper will be joined at Damian Lillard's new exclusive basketball camp, Formula Zero, by class of 2023 commit Dusty Stromer and incoming sophomore Hunter Sallis, a great sign he could be persuaded to come out to Spokane for his collegiate career.

Additionally, we discuss two other players in the class of 2023 whom Gonzaga has extended offers to - guard Wesley Yates from Texas and forward JJ Taylor from Simi Valley, California.

The Gonzaga Bulldogs are set to face the Portland State Vikings in the Phil Knight 85th Invitational Jul 26, 2022

Show notes

The Gonzaga Bulldogs will take on the Portland State Vikings in the first round of the PK85 on Thanksgiving evening at 9:30 PM PT. It's not the draw fans wanted, but potential matchups against Florida and Duke still await Mark Few's team in the tournament. We discuss the entire bracket field before answering spillover questions that did not make it into Monday's mailbag episode, including:

Which non-conference game I'm most excited for, and why
Ideal home-and-home matchups for both the men's and women's teams
Will the Big-12 ever consider adding Gonzaga?
If Big East and Pac-12 are not options, should GU go to the Mountain West?

Do the Gonzaga Bulldogs need a two point guard lineup to win a National Championship? Jul 25, 2022

Show notes

The Gonzaga Bulldogs have had the most success in school history when deploying two point guard lineups, a la Andrew Nembhard and Jalen Suggs in 2021 and Nigel Williams-Goss and Josh Perkins in 2017. Today is mailbag Monday, and discussing Gonzaga's two-guard lineup with Malachi Smith and Nolan Hickman, and how Mark Few might handle other rotation questions, is just one of many topics covered, including:

What one skill would I add to one player ahead of the 22-23 season?
Which priority recruit would I pick and why?
Has Gonzaga had a four-year player who never started consistently?
What does Gonzaga need to do to get the No. 1 overall seed again?
How would I design my dream GU uniform?

Why Gonzaga adding Montana to the non-conference slate is good for all parties involved Jul 22, 2022

Show notes

The Gonzaga Bulldogs agreed to battle the Montana Grizzlies at The Kennel in Spokane on December 20, adding a fun regional game to the non-conference slate. More games like this, as opposed to the SWAC buy games Mark Few often schedules, would appease the fanbase and local basketball fans, while giving the Zags a better challenge.

Today's episode is a look at what other similar teams Gonzaga could add with the five remaining games on their schedule, as well as discussion about the NCAA's latest potential change to the transfer rules, and a look at the six non-Gonzaga WCC players who participated in the NBA summer league, and their chances of sticking in the league this upcoming season.

Comparing the Big East and the Pac-12 as realignment options for the Gonzaga Bulldogs Jul 21, 2022

Show notes

Conference realignment remains the biggest talking point in the NCAA and college sports, and The Athletic's Dana O'Neil and Brian Hamilton discussed the Gonzaga Bulldogs to the Big East rumor as well as what it could look like if Mark Few's program stayed near Spokane and instead joined the Pac-12.

Today's episode is a look at those two options for the Zags. Will the Big East try to add GU before their media rights deal with Fox expires in 2024-25? Is another west coast team an option to add alongside Gonzaga, like Saint Mary's or San Francisco? Is jumping to the Pac-12 even worth it for the Zags, especially if Oregon and Washington bounce?

Then, in the final segment, we discuss the new contract signed by Andrew Nembhard with the Indiana Pacers, which guarantees him more money than the 13 players selected in front of him in the 2022 NBA draft.

What a Gonzaga Bulldogs alumni squad for The Basketball Tournament might look like Jul 20, 2022

Show notes

The Gonzaga Bulldogs have four alumni participating in The Basketball Tournament (TBT) this season - Kyle Wiltjer, Admon Gilder, and Josh Perkins. With multiple alumni already interested, why hasn't anyone put a team of Gonzaga guys together since the first team, A Few Good Men, back in 2015?

Today's episode is a look at the three Zags participating and when they will be on TV, but also a discussion about what a team of Gonzaga alumni might reasonably look like. Even excluding the NBA guys, would a group of alumni be good enough to win the $1 million prize? I offer a 12-man roster that I think is realistic, and discuss how they might do in TBT.

Then, in the final segment, we discuss the four Gonzaga Baseball pitchers who were selected in the 2022 MLB draft - Gabriel Hughes, Tristan Vrieling, William Kempner, and Brody Jessee.

What would a Pac-12 and ACC merger look like, and could it involve the Gonzaga Bulldogs? Jul 19, 2022

Show notes

The Gonzaga Bulldogs had four players participate in the NBA summer league: Chet Holmgren (Thunder) Andrew Nembhard (Pacers) Joel Ayayi (Hawks) and Filip Petrusev (76ers). While Holmgren and Nembhard are secure in their roster spots, Ayayi and Petrusev were fighting to begin the season on a roster and not in the G-League or overseas.

Today's episode is a look at how each of the four Zags fared now that summer league action is over. We've seen some highlight reel plays from Holmgren, but what are his areas of growth? Is Nembard's high turnover rate an issue? Will Ayayi and Petrusev show enough scoring prowess to stick this time around?

Then, in the final segment, we discuss the news that the Pac-12 and Big-12 merger is out. Will the Pac-12 pursue a soft merger with the ACC? Could they try to poach Kansas or Houston from the Big-12? And finally, what does it all mean for Gonzaga?

Those questions and more answered in today's show!

Starting lineups and minutes predictions for the 2022-23 Gonzaga Bulldogs Jul 18, 2022

Show notes

Mark Few is going to have a lot of hard choices with the Gonzaga Bulldogs roster during the 2022-2023 season. With Drew Timme, Julian Strawther, and Rasir Bolton all returning to join returners Anton Watson, Nolan Hickman, and Hunter Sallis - and newcomers Efton Reid and Malachi Smith - there may not be enough minutes to go around in Spokane.

Today is mailbag Monday, and discussing Gonzaga's lineup and making minutes predictions is just one of many topics covered, including:

Is conference realignment the new norm, and will it kill the NCAA?
Predicting where Strawther will rank among Gonzaga's scorers next year
What can we expect from Hickman and Sallis next season?
Will Joel Ayayi make the Atlanta Hawks roster?
Should Gonzaga schedule any WAC schools?
Where do Gonzaga's women's players play after graduation?
