New GM Joe Hortiz and Jim Harbaugh are a Perfect Fit | New S&C Coach Ben Herbert is a GAME CHANGER Jan 31, 2024

Show notes

The Chargers made a huge move bringing in new general manager Joe Hortiz after decades of helping the Ravens build some of the NFL's best rosters. Hortiz has long been an elite scout and talent evaluator and Jim Harbaugh's experience as an organizational CEO should help ease his transition. Dan and David get into the new GM and get ready to run through a wall for new Strength and Conditioning Ben Herbert. He held the same role with Michigan under Harbaugh and checks all of the boxes as an innovator and a motivator. Herbert is the type of coach that can help create a culture. The guys also get into some other potential additions to this All-Star staff like Lions Pass Game coordinator Tanner Engstrand. Engstrand could fill the Chargers open OC position with ties to Harbaugh, and could potentially be paired with veteran offensive line coach Tim Drevno.

ESPN's Kris Rhim Joins to Talk Jim Harbaugh's Impact, New GM Joe Hortiz and LA Chargers Offseason Jan 30, 2024

Show notes

The Chargers have had a chaotic offseason so far and ESPN's Kris Rhim comes on to discuss why he thinks Jim Harbaugh means everything to this franchise. Harbaugh now has his GM in place with reports that Joe Hortiz is the guy, and the fit makes a ton of sense. Dan and David also talk with Kris about if the expectations for Justin Herbert have now been raised with the hiring and if the Chargers need to draft him a new weapon. The guys also get into the addition of Jesse Minter and if the new defensive regime can bring star safety Derwin James back to prominence. It will be crucial for Los Angeles to do well in the draft to stay competitive, but does the Harbaugh hiring give a hint to who the 5th overall pick could be?

Jim Harbaugh was "Starstruck" Meeting Justin Herbert | New Chargers DC Jesse Minter a Fantastic Hire Jan 29, 2024

Show notes

Jim Harbaugh made it very clear why he chose to coach the LA Chargers when publicly talking about his new superstar quarterback Justin Herbert for the first time. Harbaugh is coming back to try and win a Super Bowl, and his message to team was: We are going to work hard, and it's going to be worth it. Dan and David discuss the new head coaches comments and the first official new staff member Jesse Minter, the Chargers new Defensive Coordinator. Minter followed in Ravens DC Mike Macdonald's footprints at Michigan, and now he will bring his own version of that suffocating defense to Los Angeles. The Chargers also have requested their first candidate for their Offensive Coordinator position in former Colts OC Marcus Brady. In Indianapolis, Brady's offense helped Jonathan Taylor break out in his run-heavy scheme, but is the right fit in LA?

The Chargers Landed Jim Harbaugh but Now Must Find the GM to Build the Roster he Needs to Succeed Jan 26, 2024

Show notes

The big fish is in the building and now the biggest thing on Jim Harbaugh's agenda is finding a general manager that sees his vision. They must find someone who can build a Harbaugh style roster which means a hard nosed, blue-collar team that can finish games late. Dan and David get into the Chargers GM search including the leaders in the clubhouse Joe Hortiz and Brandon Brown. Hortiz has decades of experience with the Ravens and has collaborated with Harbaugh in the past. Brown is a rising star that has been promoted quickly everywhere he has been and has experience in many parts of the front office. The guys also talk about if other candidates like Ed Dodds and Ian Cunningham can get back in the mix. The biggest thing the prospective manager must make sure is that they avoid the mistakes of Tom Telesco before them.

"When And Not If": Jim Harbaugh Hasn't Signed with the LA Chargers Yet but Deal Likely Done Soon Jan 24, 2024

Show notes

Tuesday was incredibly difficult waiting and waiting to hear the results of the Chargers second meeting with Jim Harbaugh but a deal never came. It is not time to panic yet however, because the deal is reportedly still likely to happen as they potentially hash out Harbaugh's coaching staff and decide on a General Manager. Dan and David discuss the latest buzz and also how their former GM Tom Telesco was signed to the same position in Las Vegas. Telesco could be better with the Raiders, but with his track record of top heavy draft classes and never being able to consistently put out a winning product, it's highly unlikely. Telesco's latest first round pick Quentin Johnston had a disastrous season, but could turn it around in year two. One of the biggest holes heading into 2024 is at tight end, but if the Chargers could trade back and still get Brock Bowers, it would be a home run.

NFL Analyst Says Jim Harbaugh to the Chargers is a "Done Deal" with Second Interview Coming Up Jan 23, 2024

Show notes

Jim Harbaugh is the only coach the Chargers have set another interview up with and some in NFL circles say the choice for the Michigan coach has been a "done deal" for weeks. Other reports say his wife could be joining him on his trip to LA, leading to speculation that a deal could happen very soon. Dan and David play Buy or Sell with the Chargers storylines and overreactions including if Justin Herbert could win and MVP award with Harbaugh at his side. Harbaugh and Herbert would make a great match, and at this point if LA doesn't find a way to sign the superstar coach, almost every other hire would feel like a failure. The guys also get into if they think Kellen Moore will be back with the team in 2024 and if they are avoiding taking a tackle with their first round pick.

Chargers Still Favorites to Land Jim Harbaugh | LA Blocks Kellen Moore's Potential Departure Jan 22, 2024

Show notes

The drama surrounding Jim Harbaugh continued over the weekend with the Falcons showing interest and a return to Michigan in the air, but Chargers are reportedly still the favorites to land him. This will be a game of patience and we won't likely know his answer til the end of the week. Dan and David get into the latest Chargers news including the Harbaugh timeline and Los Angeles deciding to block Kellen Moore from pursuing another OC job. The move to keep Moore around is likely just to keep their options open, but the news is alarming to Chargers fans who connect him with Dan Quinn. Many lessons can be learned from the teams still in the playoffs, but one of the biggest the Chargers can learn from is how important it is to have a great tight end. Could Brock Bowers be Justin Herbert's Travis Kelce or George Kittle?

LA Chargers Coaching Search Heating Up with Jim Harbaugh and Solid Contingencies in Place Jan 19, 2024

Show notes

The Los Angeles Chargers interviewed former Stanford coach David Shaw Thursday which allows them to now hire their next head coach at any time. The Jim Harbaugh watch is at critical mass, and Shaw could be part of Harbaugh's Chargers staff if they go in that direction. Dan and David analyze the latest coaching buzz and discuss how Los Angeles is setting themselves up with great contingency plans if Harbaugh doesn't work out. Two of the best backup options are Mike Vrabel and Ben Johnson, and the Chargers would be smart to move quickly on them if Plan A falls through. The guys also get into how the Harbaugh suitors seem to be dwindling with the Falcons pursuing Bill Belichick and the Raiders likely keeping things in house.
