GM Joe Hortiz Says Chargers Will Be Active in Free Agency and Will Take Best Player Available at 5 Feb 28, 2024

Show notes

Joe Hortiz spoke with the media at the NFL Scouting Combine and said the Chargers must get "creative" in how they attack free agency. The team won't be able to fill all of their holes in the draft, and finding valuable players at a low price will have a major impact on the Chargers 2024 success. Dan and David react to Hortiz's press conference and why he believes best player available is how Los Angeles must approach their first round pick. He also believes that age isn't always important if a player is still productive which is good news for a Keenan Allen extension. Hortiz knows that no team is ever one player away and if a special player is available, you have to take them regardless of team needs. The guys also get into Chase Daniel's comments about Austin Ekeler looking for a "fresh start" and what the Chargers plan is for at running back.

Chargers Khalil Mack has Drawn Interest From Multiple Teams With Potential Trade Looming Feb 27, 2024

Show notes

Khalil Mack played at an elite level in 2023 but is now a potential cap casualty for the Chargers but they may be able to trade him with several teams interested in his services. Getting something back would be a win for Los Angeles but the move would be putting a lot of faith in an injury-plagued Joey Bosa. Dan and David discuss the chances a trade could happen soon and discuss why they have a hard time believing Bosa can return to being a top-10 edge rusher in the NFL. Another way the Chargers could alleviate some cap stress is by extending star receiver Keenan Allen. Will a deal get done before the start of the new league year? The guys also get into why the Chargers cap issues are somewhat overblown and how likely it is that the team can retain safety Alohi Gilman.

The Chargers Should Pick WR Malik Nabers Over TE Brock Bowers With the 5th Overall Pick Feb 26, 2024

Show notes

Giving Justin Herbert an electric weapon in the first round should be at the top of the Chargers wish list with blue chip weapons available like Malik Nabers and Brock Bowers. Both players would improve the LA offense, but taking Nabers gives the Herbert a legitimate wide receiver one at a huge discount. Dan and David get into why Nabers would be a great selection at 5 and why Brock Bowers is good that he still makes it incredibly close. Bowers is one of the best tight end prospects in recent history and would give the Chargers a versatile playmaker with elite potential. Washington receiver Rome Odunze is another player commonly mocked to Los Angeles and it is easy to see why. Odunze is always open with his contested catch abilities and is a legitimate deep threat, but the guys like him most as a trade back option.

Chargers OC Greg Roman Details Plan To Maximize Justin Herbert by Giving Him a Great Running Game Feb 23, 2024

Show notes

New OC Greg Roman spoke with the media about his vision for the Chargers offense and seeing what Justin Herbert could be with a legitimate rushing attack. He knows how great Herbert is, but Roman wants a winning offense that worries about results instead of stats. Dan and David discuss what they like about Roman's comments and why it's so important for the Chargers to invest in the running game if they want results. New DC Jesse Minter also spoke Thursday and talked about building a defense designed to attack opponents weaknesses. The important thing is, Minter knows that a complex defense only works if the players understand it and not to overcomplicate things. He also detailed his plan to get the most out of Derwin James while not overextending him.

Stay or Go: Keenan Allen Will Be on the Chargers in 2024, Mike Williams Will Not Feb 22, 2024

Show notes

Keenan Allen is a Chargers legend already and the good news is he should be sticking around, but they can't keep him and Mike Williams. Williams' injuries have made him a likely cap casualty, especially with Allen balling out in 2023. Dan and David discuss how likely each of the Chargers free agents will be back with the team, and those who could get released. Gerald Everett has played well in lightning bolts and is one the hardest players to project, while star running back Austin Ekeler is likely on his way out. Ekeler's production and efficiency dipped precipitously in 2023, and the Chargers probably can't afford him regardless. Los Angeles Kicker Cameron Dicker is also an upcoming free agent, but after the prolific start to his career, he isn't going anywhere.

Several of Jim Harbaugh's Former Michigan Players are Great Fits for the LA Chargers in the Draft Feb 21, 2024

Show notes

The Chargers could add serious juice in the NFL draft with some of Jim Harbaugh's former defenders. Players like Mikey Sainristil and Junior Colson would fill big holes on the Los Angeles defense and are already familiar and fit well in new DC Jesse Minter's scheme. Dan and David dive into their Chargers mailbag and discuss how the culture that Harbaugh is trying to create can translate onto the field. New OC Greg Roman is known for his run heavy offense, but will that be the case with Justin Herbert at quarterback? The guys discuss while the offense should be more balanced, Herbert will still be the biggest part of the offense. With free agency coming up the hosts discuss which positions should be addressed before the Chargers get to the draft.

Can the Chargers Find Way to Trade Mike Williams | Can Jim Harbaugh Win In Year One? Feb 20, 2024

Show notes

It is very unlikely that Mike Williams is back with the Chargers in 2024 and trading him would be a huge win, but his contract will be a tough sell. Expectations will be high regardless of whether Williams stays or not, but can Jim Harbaugh build the Chargers into a winner in year one given the cap situation? Dan and David get into their Buy and Sells for the biggest storylines and overreactions in Los Angeles and discuss the restructuring of Corey Linsley's contract. The move helps the Chargers financially and while he is still likely retiring, there is no doubt that Linsley was a great signing. The guys also talk about the NFL Draft and whether or not they thing the Chargers keep the fifth overall pick or trade back. Can they pass up on Brock Bowers and Malik Nabers?

Brock Bowers Is The Best Choice For The LA Chargers At 5 | NFL Draft Expert Keith Sanchez Joins Feb 19, 2024

Show notes

Chargers fans are torn between WR Malik Nabers and TE Brock Bowers in round one and Keith Sanchez makes his case for Bowers. The Draft Network’s expert believes the Georgia tight end is the Marvin Harrison Jr. of his position and would bring LA a blue chip offensive weapon. Sanchez also believes that Nabers would be a great choice as well, but is there any way Harrison Jr. makes it to 5? Los Angeles could also take neither of those receivers and go with Rome Odunze instead. The guys also talk about the why the Chargers should trade back if they want an offensive tackle because the draft is so deep at the position. Sanchez discusses how he feels about the cornerback class if the Chargers trade back and why there is no consensus on the running backs this year.

Staying or Going: Khalil Mack Was Awesome in 2023, But Chargers Could Keep Joey Bosa Instead Feb 16, 2024

Show notes

Deciding between Joey Bosa and Khalil Mack will directly effect the Chargers chances in 2024 and it’s unclear which way the team will go. Mack was dominant in 2023 but is pricier and older while Bosa has been injured often but also give Los Angeles more flexibility. Dan and David discuss which Chargers defenders will be staying or going as the offseason starts to heat up. The one impending free agent that should be retained is Alohi Gilman. The fourth-year safety had a breakout season in 2023, but will the Chargers be able to afford to keep him? Elsewhere in the secondary, the Michael Davis experiment is likely coming to an end. Cap casualties could impact the defense as well with LB Eric Kendricks being one of the pricier pieces, but will the Chargers allow him and Kenneth Murray to walk?

Jim Harbaugh is the Best Hire in the NFL | New Chargers Coach Marc Trestman Could Be X-Factor Feb 15, 2024

Show notes

The Chargers struck gold hiring Jim Harbaugh to be their head coach and according to the Athletic, NFL coaches and executives agree that he was the best hire in this coaching cycle. Some question if his offense will work in the modern NFL, but the Chargers are giving themselves and Justin Herbert the best chance. Dan and David discuss their trust in Harbaugh's vision and new Senior Offensive Assistant Marc Trestman. Trestman went down in flames in the NFL before, but he also has led some of the league's most prolific passing attacks. The Chargers have many re-treads on their offensive coaching staff, but Harbaugh has come up with a staff so crazy it might just be awesome. Defensively, Los Angeles have sacrificed NFL experience for youth and innovation. Along with Jesse Minter, the Chargers have scooped up almost the entirety of Michigan's defensive staff and that continuity is something Brandon Staley failed to bring.
