LIAM 039 – It’s Good to Have Dreams; It’s Better to Have Goals! Dec 10, 2014
    Show notes

It's good to have dreams, hopes and wishes for your future, but it's better have goals. Many people think they have goals for their lives because they have an idea of what they want to accomplish, but they don't when they will achieve it or exactly what steps they need to take to carry it out. That is not a goal. That is just a wish. Listen as I walk you through the difference between wishes and goals. Listen to/download this episode here: Show outline: Again, the topic for this episode is driven by events and conversations I've had recently. 2014 is coming to an end, so it's time for creating a plan for 2015 It's also the many people start thinking about New Year's resolutions The verb “Resolve” means: to decide firmly on a course of action. What do you want to be? What do you want your life to look like? What do you want that you don’t have now? I urge you to come up with wildly imaginative answers to these questions. Imagine your life extravagantly, because nobody can criticize you for your imagination! What are your goals? It's great to have dreams, but it's better to have goals. Dreams are vague, non-specific desires. Goals are specific and measurable. “I want to be a doctor” is a dream, a good dream. “I want to be a pediatric cardiologist by the time I’m 28 years old” is a goal, a very specific, measurable goal. Most people never realize their dreams because they don't convert them to goals. Think about, visualize, and write out your perfect life in each of these areas: Home: where would you live, what would your house look like, furniture, view, setting (woods, lake, beach, ocean), paintings, artwork, etc. Career: what would you like to be doing, who would you like to be doing it with, ideal colleagues, clients, product or service, how would it be benefiting your clients and the world, contribution to world Financial: how much money would you have, income, savings, assets, investments Family/Friends: what would your relationships look like? how many friends, what kind of friends, what would you like to do with them. Romantic Relationships/Spouse: character traits, romance, intimacy, caring, touching, giving, receiving Body/Physical Health: Ideal weight, skin tone, stamina, endurance, speed, abilities Emotional/Spiritual: free, open, cheerful, grounded, meditative, prayer, worship, etc. Community/Service: what kind of community would you live in, activities, neighbors, interactions with them, how would you serve, volunteer, etc. The World: what would the perfect world look like? would there be peace, war, ozone layer, global warming? How would people groups and nations be interacting? 1953 Graduating class of Yale, surveyed who had specific goals written down. Only 3%. 20 years later, those 3% had a higher net worth than the 97% who didn't have them written down. There is amazing power in knowing what you want and working to achieve it. All of your goals should be in line with your purpose, mission, and vision for your life Be very specific. You can change it as you go, but have very specific goals with deadlines. All goals should have these traits: Conceivable: you can think it up in your mind and it is conceptually possible Believable: you have to believe you can do it. (if you don't believe you can run a mile in under 3 minutes, don't make that a goal. You will never achieve what you what you don't truly believe is possible) Achievable: same idea as Believable. It must be something you can, realistically, achieve. Measurable: how much, by when. Must be measurable by someone other than you. Stated with no alternative: "I want to live on the ocean or a lake" is not a goal. "I want to live on the pacific ocean in Malibu" is. Something for you, not someone else: "I want my son go get better grades in school" is not a goal for you. Controllable: something that you can control.

LIAM 038 – Better Begins With You! Dec 08, 2014
    Show notes

Better begins with you! Whatever the "better" is that you want in or for your life, it is up to you to create it. If you want to be better, you must think better, act better, and do better! Listen to/download this episode here: Show outline: I'm recording this while I'm out in Denver on a business trip and staying at a friend's house I was in Denver to meet with my business partner and key staff to do strategic planning for 2015 2014 was a good year, but we want 2015 to be even better We want more customers, which will result in more revenue, which will result in more money in our pockets In order to get more customers we are going to have to do things better Better products/services Better customer service Better attitude and outlook for our company and the future "If you want this year to be better than last year, then think better, act better, and do better. Better begins with you!" – Steve Keating (@LeadToday) I love this quote, but sadly this idea of personal responsibility is lost on many in our culture. You, and you alone, are 100% responsible for your attitude, outlook, reactions, responses, decisions, and the actions necessary to make your life what you want it to be! Not the government, not your employer; not your spouse, family or friends. Just YOU! Mahatma Gandhi — 'Be the change that you wish to see in the world.' You can't expect from others what you are not delivering yourself If you want love and peace in the world, what are you doing to create love and peace in your life, in your home, etc.? If you want kindness, love, and respect from someone else, what are you doing to be kind, loving and respectful? Assume 100% responsibility for everything about your life -- everything you are, everything that is in or not in your life! Even if something is the result of what someone else has done, still assume that you are at least partially responsible for it. Here's why: If it was totally out of your control to create it, it is totally out of your control to change it. If it was at least partially the result of your thoughts, words, or actions, then it is partially within your control to change it. The higher percentage ownership you assume for your situation, the higher percentage control you have to change it. Building a better life, business, career, relationship, etc, begins with you! Attitude is everything! Henry Ford - "If you think you can do a thing or think you can't do a thing, you're right." If you want more money/prosperity, yet you believe the economy is going to collapse or there is no opportunity because a certain person is the head of the government, you have created a limiting believe that will prevent you for creating, or seeing opportunities for prosperity. If you believe that opportunity abounds in the world, you will create and see opportunities everywhere! As 2014 comes to a close, sit down and write out a year-end review, and map for what you want to achieve in 2015 Write out all of the things you did well in 2014 and would like to do/see more of Identify unproductive thoughts and habits and write down what thoughts and habits would be more productive Make a wish list for 2015--money, fun, relationships, etc. Then write out some of the small steps you need to take to move you in the direction of producing those things Mentioned in this show: LifeThought: Better Begins with YOU! - Bruce Van Horn EPISODE SPONSOR: eVoice - Claim your FREE 30-day trial Subscription/Social Links: Subscribe on iTunes! LIAM 037 – I Hope You Dance! Dec 05, 2014
    Show notes

I hope you take the emotional risks and dance this beautiful dance of life! We all get hurt, some more so than others, by others in life. Don't let that stop you. Get up, brush yourself off, love and value yourself enough to get back in the dance. You only hurt yourself and miss many beautiful opportunities in life when you decide to sit down and stay down instead of engaging and adding your contribution to life. Go into all situations so wholeheartedly that you will feel devastated if it doesn't work out. If it doesn't, take some time to catch your breath, then get up and go into the next situation with the same goal! Listen to/download this episode here: Show outline: The subject was emotional walls and not being willing to try again because of past painful experiences has come up several times in my conversations recently. In February 2014, I wrote an article for a friend who declared herself "done with men!" LifeThought: Go in with the goal of being devastated if it doesn’t work out. Go all in! Give 100% of yourself to everyone and everything you do. How high are the walls you've built around your heart? We build walls as a defense mechanism to prevent getting hurt We build them intentionally and quickly in response to pain We build them unintentionally, so slowly that we don't recognize them We start new relationships with enthusiasm and excitement and vulnerability When things don't go well, we feel pain, and we don't want to experience it again Walls are emotional barriers we put up to keep people from hurting us again When we get hurt, we sometimes declare ourselves "done" and we never attempt that thing again. Sometimes, we try again, but with the poison of the previous relationship still inside us We are suspicious and on the alert for any behavior that resembles the previous relationship We push people away the minute we become uncomfortable We move from love/vulnerability to bitterness, anger, resentment, cynicism, or skepticism. This sets the other person up to fall into one of your emotional traps, which isn't fair to that person Boundaries are healthy, but walls keep everyone out and keep you in prison. It will be hard for someone to fall in love with you if there are walls, snares, meant to keep them out. It is unfair to the other person if you are hiding part of who you are behind a wall. Love yourself so deeply and so unconditionally that you have a very high self-worth Having a high self-worth gives you the ability to engage in life and take chances A high emotional bank-account allows you to have disappointments that don't destroy you. If you've been hurt, take the time to heal, but resolve to get back in the dance as soon as possible Go in again with complete transparency. Give 100% to the effort. Go in with the goal of being devastated if it doesn't work out. If it doesn't, be devastated, but, as soon as you can, go back in with the very same goal. Never settle for less because you are afraid of being hurt! If you get the choice to sit it out or dance, I HOPE YOU DANCE! LIAM 036 – Personal Branding: Practice Immediate Forgiveness Dec 03, 2014
    Show notes

Practicing immediate forgiveness is an essential part of your personal branding! While that may not make sense, at first glance, you'll learn that it makes perfect sense. In order to be the best version of you you can possibly be requires that all of your energy be focused on growing and creating happy, positive experiences in your life. Holding on to negative thoughts and feelings drains large amounts of energy from you. In fact, unforgiveness poisons and weakens you, which directly impacts your personal growth, relationships, business opportunities--every aspect of your life! Learn how to forgive everyone for everything as soon as possible! Listen to/download this episode here: Show outline: Follow up on Forgiveness conversation with Leisa Peterson, LIAM 35 A tip Leisa shared with me after the interview: People often don't think "I need to forgive ____ because..." Yet people often think "_____ really pisses me off!" or "I get so angry/annoyed when ______" These are symptoms of unforgiveness and emotional poison I want to look at it from a Personal Branding angle Your brand is you, you are constantly helping or harming your brand with every interaction A brand is much more than a name, a logo, or a slogan Your brand is your story, your promise to the world about how customers will FEEL when interacting with you It's never about features, somewhat about benefit, but always about FEELINGS! It takes intentional, conscious effort to create positive brand awareness This requires all the emotional "horsepower", or energy, you can harness Holding on to anger, bitterness, resentment, jealousy--any negative thoughts--wastes HUGE amounts of mental energy! Leisa Peterson walked us through a beautiful, highly effective forgiveness meditation (LIAM 35) The key elements of the meditation were: Feeling grounded, in harmony/connection to the world and everyone A place of personal safety/security A sense of being deeply, truly loved -- the security of that feeling A sense of unconditional love for yourself -- the confidence of that feeling From that place of personal security and confidence, being willing to see people as just like you Wanting to be happy & peaceful Wanting to be free of suffering Recognizing that when people are in pain for whatever reason, they don't think or as they would in love and peace They feel disconnect from humanity They feel like a victim They take out their pain on others thinking it will ease their own pain They may even think that what they are doing is helpful to you in some way Recognizing that their words/actions are driven by their personal pain, we can feel compassion--an understanding of the source of their behavior For a place of unconditional self-love, we can have unconditional love for them--their true self, not the hurting self that has just done harmful things, but their inner-self. We can know that what they have done is not about us, but about what they are struggling with. When we realize it really isn't personal, it no longer hurts our feelings and we don't take it personally You can let it go, just like setting down an object you no longer want to carry By practicing this over and over, you will get better at it A deep personal love and feeling of security with who you are allows you to not take things personally and get your feelings hurt so easily. The goal is to get to a place where you can practice instant forgiveness! You may feel hurt or angry because of what someone does to you, but you can recognize the feeling and let it go right then. This will free you up from so much pain that lingers for days, weeks, years and sucks energy from you that you could be using for more productive/profitable thoughts You get there by constantly reminding yourself that your interpretation of whatwas said or done to you is a story you are telling your...

LIAM 035 – Forgiveness Creates Peace: A Conversation with Leisa Peterson Dec 01, 2014
    Show notes

Forgiveness is essential to living a peaceful life. When you hold on to unforgiveness, not only is it a poison you are voluntarily drinking every time you link of it, it is holding you in a type of prison in which you are the only prisoner! Forgiveness is for you! It is not the same as condoning what was done. Leisa talks to us about her painful past and how she used meditation to find forgiveness and peace. She walks us through a guided meditation on forgiveness that you can download and listen to as a way of finding the peace of forgiveness in your own life. You can download the MP3 of the guided meditation here: ForgivenessMeditation.mp3 Listen to/download this episode here: Show outline: What started out as a 10-minute phone call turned into an amazing 1.5-hour conversation and I knew I had to share Leisa and her story with you! Our paths were destined to cross! Leisa turned inward to discover the true, authentic Leisa Her father was murdered and started her inward journey She tried to manufacture happiness by pursuing material, external, egoic experiences She struggled with guilt over her father's murder, thinking she could have prevented it Leisa studied the teachings of Buddha to make sense of this death and the chaos of her mind. Learned meditation to calm/control her mind Claimed responsibility for her thoughts/actions We live in a paradox of predestination and personal responsibility for creating our lives We all live in a story that we are writing Friends and family didn't understand the shift in her thinking/behavior, so she had to let go of many unhealthy relationships "Instead of blaming everyone else for what was going on, I started looking inside of me to see what was causing my thoughts/behaviors" "I had a victim mentality that was hurting me and my relationship with others." In December 2013, she was in a doctors office when a man came in with a gun and shot several people. He said to her "you may want to leave now." Then began his rampage. In the midst of his own rage, he showed compassion and mercy Leisa suffered from PTSD after this event She knew she had to learn and engage in a forgiveness practice for this man in order to move through it. We hold unforgiveness bottled up inside us and it poisons us. "Holding onto anger is like drinking poison and expecting the other person to die." - Buddha We drink poison whenever someone does something bad to us. Leisa talks us through a guided forgiveness meditation Download/save this 9:25 min guided meditation for future, repetitive use: ForgivenessMeditation.mp3 Compassion is different from sympathy! Forgiveness does not mean condoning! Forgiveness prevents you from being in prison because of what someone did to you! Forgiveness is about knowing the person who hurt you was in a personal pain that wasn't about you. Forgiveness, when you let it, can bring immediate peace to your life. Forgiveness comes from a place of unconditional love for yourself and others. Give yourself permission to take the steps toward forgiveness and personal peace! LIAM 034 – The Holidays Can Be Hard, Lonely Days Nov 28, 2014
    Show notes

The holidays can be hard, lonely days for some people. I hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving Day with your family and friends. However, I realize that some of you are lonely, don't have family or friends, or are going through a hard time in your life. First, let me say I'm sorry for the pain you feel right now. Second, let me say I understand because I have been through very hard times and know what the holidays can be like in the midst of them. This podcast is for you. I talk about ways of gaining a new perspective on your situation with the goal of giving you hope for moving through the pain. Please listen... Show outline: A tweet from a follower: Some of us have lost everything, so it's hard to be thankful on thanksgiving Thanksgiving, Christmas, Valentines day, birthdays, anniversaries, etc. can be lonely days. I've been there. I understand. Loss of jobs, relatives, relationships, health. It's OK to feel these feelings. There is no such thing as a "bad" feeling. Don't label it. Just feel it, give it freedom to move through and out of you. I can certainly empathize with the pain, especially around holidays My dear friend, Melinda--a wife and mother of six--died last year, 2 weeks before Christmas, which would have been her 53rd birthday. That Christmas was hard, but they were still in shock. This year will be the real test for them. April Fools Day - most have a fun time playing pranks on each other. That's the anniversary of my daughter's death. I've learned to have fun again. Learn to rejoice in other people's happiness. Just because you are not where you want to be emotionally, don't pull others down to your level. Don't expect everyone to know your level of pain. Lift yourself up by being happy for others. Conversation with coaching client: think about earlier painful experiences that you can't see how you will get through. If you can think of them, guess what? You got through them. Why would this be any different It's hard, when in the midst of the pain, to see a path to happiness in the future. That's why it's important to look back and be encouraged by our past--especially our past pain. If we look back on the past fun, happy times, that can leave us despondent. Looking at past pain reminds us that we survived. It was hard, but we got through it. It probably made us stronger or brought us new opportunities God/The universe is not out to get you! Be a reverse paranoid: the universe is conspiring for you, for your success. LIAM 033 – Thanksgiving Day Should Be Every Day! Nov 26, 2014
    Show notes

Happy Thanksgiving! Feeling and expressing gratitude should not be reserved for a single day once a year. It should be an integral part of who you are, something that oozes out of your DNA without you being consciously aware of it. Being a thankful person will also make you more successful in every area of your life. If you are not a naturally thankful person, with practice, you can train yourself to be one. I know because I did it in my life. Listen as I say THANK YOU to all of you! Show outline: LIAM 19 - Happiness is directly linked to Thankfulness Article by the same name on Community Orange Thanksgiving Day should be Every Day! Thanksgiving should not be a holiday, it should be a lifestyle It is for me and my life is completely different because of it I am so thankful just to be alive this year! It's not that successful people are thankful, it is thankful people who are successful! I'm writing a book about Personal Branding and this is one of the most important chapters There are very practical, self-serving reasons you should feel and express thankfulness for everything First, it makes you a more pleasant person to be around Do you like be around consistently negative, grumpy, cynical, ungrateful people? NO If that's you, you are harming yourself because you are repelling from you people and opportunities for success I believe in the Law of Attraction -- we attract into our lives what we are, feel, and expect from life Your reticular activating system (RAS) The filter through which your conscious mind experiences reality It allows into consciousness the data you need, want, expect New car, a particular song, new jewelry or dress, a pet, etc. World-views, politics--we hear and see what we are expecting to see Bad/Good service in restaurants Good/Bad in other people Practicing gratitude opens up your RAS to more things to be grateful for The good things have always been there, you just didn't pay attention to them There are good traits in people you dislike, you just don't see them because you don't want to Gratitude opens up your eyes and you see life through a different filter By exercising your "gratitude muscle" you become stronger, more capable of weathering hard circumstance/people My cancer is a great example - it didn't knock me completely out of the game By looking for things to be grateful for, you will see good things and opportunities that were there all along, but you passed them by. You will become more successful because you will be open to success coming into your life. Gratitude journal Every day, write down everything you are grateful for It will become habit and you will discover a new way of living. Be grateful if for no other reason than you are Filled with Greatness! Your body, brain, personality, things you can do, think, say, feel, are all great cause for gratitude! Dealing with family over Holidays: Have boundaries, but not walls! LIAM 032 – A Morning Routine Could Be the Miracle You Need! Nov 24, 2014
    Show notes

Creating a morning routine as a habit of personal growth and develop could be the miracle you need. I know that developing and practicing my morning routine every morning over the past few years has completely changed my life and I attribute much of my success to this habit. But don't take my word for it, best-selling author, coach, and speaker, Hal Elrod, wrote about how his morning routine changed his life in his life-changing book: The Miracle Morning. Show outline: Do you have goals and dreams about living a better life, having better relationships? Good! What are you doing to develop yourself into the kind of person who can create/attract those things? Quick prayer/meditation: Give me the ears to hear, the eyes to see, and a mind that is open to the information and opportunities I'll encounter today that will help me get closer to becoming the person I want to be. Susan Stynes, my book-buddy, asked if I had read The Miracle Morning by Hal Elrod I had not, but I downloaded it and listened immediately I laughed and smiled throughout the book because this kid stole all of my material!!! While our routines are somewhat different, the concept is the same and I, also, attribute my morning routine to being one of the biggest influences to the changes I've made in my life over the past several years. The way you start your day frames the way the rest of your day will go. If you just get up and get rolling without plan other than same old routine, that's how your day, your life will go It's all about setting intentions and living intentionally My morning routine: Alarm at 5:15 if not already awake Stand, stretch, say "Thank you, God, for Everything! Absolutely everything! I have no complaints whatsoever!" Feed my cats, pour my cup of coffee to let it cool Drink a glass of water Box Breathing - sitting on the floor in my den, 2-3 minutes to just quiet the mind Concentrate on my belly - imagine inhaling/exhaling is all through bellybutton Breathe in through nose for 5 seconds Hold 5 seconds Breathe out through mouth for 5 seconds Hold 5 seconds Repeat 5 times Exercise Do stretches for a few minutes Do push ups, sit ups, squats, bicycle crunches Sit in front of computer with my vision-board photos on the screen saver Read through my affirmation statements and life-goals Focus on the feelings of each affirmation The feelings of having achieved the goals Gratitude/Joy for the reality of each affirmation/goal Journal Morning Journal First thoughts, feelings, desires of the day. Send love to someone - I don't write this, just think, feel, visualize, send A future someone - my boys future wives, etc Gratitude - at least 5 things Evening Journal Recap the day with new thoughts, feelings events Add to the gratitude list Record victories/successes/LOA confirmations Things I'm looking forward to tomorrow What I want to dream about tonight Read 3-5 pages of spiritual book. Review what's on my schedule and what I want to accomplish for the day Make breakfast for boys and get them off to school Go running on alternate days I just don't have time to do this in the morning We all have 24hrs. It's about priorities and what's important Seth Godin - I don't have time really means it wasn't important enough If there was a medicine you had to take to save your life, but you had to get up 30 minutes earlier than usual to take it, would you? I'm not a morning person The kind of person you are is about the story you tell yourself If you say "I'm going to be so tired tomorrow if I get up early" you will be! Doesn't have to be in the morning as long as you do it and develop the habit of framing your do so it goes the way you want it. "How we spend our days is, of course, how we spend our lives." - Annie Dillard (LIAM 30)

    LIAM 031 – A Gift is Often is NOT a Gift! Nov 21, 2014
    Show notes

A gift is not a gift if you expect ANYTHING in return! Have you ever given a gift and gotten your feelings hurt because you didn't get a "thank you" in return? If so, it wasn't a gift. Gifting should, ultimately, be a selfish thing. You should give only with the goal of pleasing yourself having given something with no expectation of repayment of any kind--not even gratitude! Show outline: Have you ever given a gift and gotten your feelings hurt because you didn't get a "thank you" in return? You expected repayment in the form of gratitude! Have you ever been upset because you gave a gift to someone, only to find out later they gave it to someone else? It wasn't a gift because you placed conditions upon its use! The definition of "Gift" is: something, tangible or intangible, given to someone without the expectation of payment. Expecting a simple "Thank you," or expecting the person to keep it or use it in a certain way is expecting a form of payment, which makes it a purchase, not a gift! Yes, it is common courtesy to say "Thank you" when someone gives us something. However, you can’t control what other people do or say; all you can control is you. True gift giving is ultimately a selfish act. You should give because it pleases you to give. You should give because it makes you happy to give. LIAM 030 – Find Joy in the Journey: Be Happy in Becoming! Nov 19, 2014
    Show notes

Finding joy in the journey of life is about being happy in the becoming! We only run a marathon one step at a time. We only live life one moment at a time. As Annie Dillard said: "how we spend our days is, of course, how we spend our lives." Doing your best is about what you are DOING at the moment to get the result you want. If you are only living for the end-result and missing the satisfaction and joy of doing the things to create the result, you will have missed the point of living along the way, and you will not enjoy the result as much as you will if you enjoy the process of creating the result. Show outline: Today's Facebook Post: Today is going to be a beautiful, happy, productive day. I am going to create and embrace peace. I will smile and laugh, and help others do the same. I will recognize and create opportunities for growth in the direction of my goals! I will think, believe, and take action today! Follow up on marathon = Do Your Best Doing your best is about what you are DOING right NOW. Not what you want the end-result to look like. The result you want is important because it shapes what you do now, but it is the NOW that matters most. If all you can think about is the result, the reward, that's what you live for and you miss the present moment We want so many things and so much stuff: The car, house, spouse, kids, vacations, bank accounts The degrees, the promotions the careers When we get what we want after working so hard to get them, we are often disappointed We miss the joy of the doing of the things that got us there Success is not a destination, it is a process, it is the journey of becoming How we spend our days is, of course, how we spend our lives. — Annie Dillard Life is made up of a series of days, made up of a series of nows You can't have an awesome life if you don't have a lot of really awesome days A life well-lived is made up of days well-lived A job well-done is made up tasks well-done "Always Do Your Best" is about the present moment and enjoying doing your best at whatever you are doing now Finding the "joy in the journey" is about taking pleasure in the process of becoming Hard doesn't mean you can't enjoy it Making mistakes doesn't mean you didn't do your best, and you can still take pleasure in the mistake by knowing you can do it better or different the next time It is not the years that get wasted, it is the minutes and hours.
