LIAM 019 – Happiness is Directly Linked to Thankfulness Oct 24, 2014
    Show notes

In this episode, I talk about how Happiness is directly linked to Thankfulness. If you want to be happier in life, you must learn how to feel and express gratitude for the way your life is right now. As you express thankfulness, you are focusing on what you want more of, instead of the problems which you want less of. What you focus on expands or increases, so focus more on being grateful and more of what you are grateful for will come into your life. Keeping a gratitude journal is just as important, if not more so, than keeping a victory log! Quotes from the show: What if you woke up tomorrow with only the things you gave thanks for today? Complaining about your current circumstances is the glue that keeps you attached to them. - Peter Sage When the Student is ready, the Teacher will appear. - Buddha Show outline: Veggie Tales - Madame Blueberry Though she was wealthy and had many things, she was a very "blue" berry. Recently, the topic of gratitude has come up frequently for me "What if you woke up tomorrow with only the things you gave thanks for today?" Ten years ago, I was like Madame Blueberry, but without all of the stuff I was grumpy and ungrateful, always expecting bad things to happen It's hard to be happy when everything is going wrong! You must WANT to be happy before you can BE happy. Happiness is directly linked to thankfulness Melody Beattie from The Language of Letting Go: Gratitude unlocks the fullness of life. It turns what we have into enough, and more. It turns denial into acceptance, chaos to order, confusion to clarity. It can turn a meal into a feast, a house into a home, a stranger into a friend. Gratitude makes sense of our past, brings peace for today and creates a vision for tomorrow. According to a Wikipedia article on Gratitude: A large body of recent work has suggested that people who are more grateful have higher levels of subjective well-being. Grateful people are happier, less depressed, less stressed, and more satisfied with their lives and social relationships. Grateful people also have higher levels of control of their environments, personal growth, purpose in life, and self acceptance. Importance of keeping a gratitude log/journal -- perhaps more important than a victory log Conditions your RAS to start looking for good things When reviewing victories, be grateful for each one If you have the list, it gives you something to look back on during the "down" days What you focus on expands/increases Complaining about your current circumstances is the glue that keeps you attached to them. - Peter Sage By focusing on the good, we move through or let go of the bad faster Hospital: Though I was very weak and in much pain, I was so thankful to each nurse and the care I received If you aren't getting what you want, try doing something different! Give gratitude a try. Change takes works! It takes practice! It takes determination and commitment! Not everyone is ready for this. - "When the Student is ready, the Teacher will appear" It has proven true in my life - the more thankful I am for what I have, the happier I am and the more opportunities come into my life! LIAM 017 – E+R=O: You Control Your Outcomes Because You Control Your Responses to Events Oct 20, 2014
    Show notes

In this episode, I talk about how we control the outcomes in our lives by controlling our responses to events. The formula E+R=O shows us that, if we don't like the way a certain event has affected us (the outcome), we can change that by changing the way we respond that event. Show outline: Most people believe their lives are controlled by the events that happen in their lives, or, at least, they let their lives be directed by the events. It is easier to blame external forces than to claim responsibility Traffic made me late My boss/spouse/parent makes me so mad It's all the government's fault The economy is bad This type of thinking leaves us as the victim of circumstances You cannot change the event, but you can change the outcome by changing your response E+R=O - I learned it from Jack Canfield, but he got it from W. Clement Stone It's simple math. The Event is Constant. Your Response is the Variable that determines the answer (Outcome) Some examples: Event = Heavy Traffic. Outcome = Late for work, Anxious, Angry, Why Me?, need to make excuse to boss Alt 1: Response = My fault, I did leave on time. The world didn't end. Apologize, but take ownership Alt 2: There was a bad accident. Response = those poor people. So thankful that wasn't me. Apologize to boss, but keep those people in your thoughts/prayers, be thankful throughout day it wasn't you. Event = Someone runs a red light, nearly hits you. Outcome = Anger/Hatred toward person, victim Alt: Response = Person may have had a good reason to be in such a hurry. Hope all is OK. Compassion instead of rage. Just simply "Sorry, I'm late. I got held up in traffic" is better than "Oh, sorry I'm late. Can you believe that traffic out there. I was sitting there barely crawling..." The drama simply increases the stress and reinforces victim-thinking. Ownership / Responsibility always makes you feel better about yourself. Choose a response that is useful, leaves you in control of your feelings, and serves to build your self-esteem. It's all about the story you tell yourself about the event, how it fits with your self-image and world-view. It's not what other people say or do to you, it's about what you say or do to yourself afterwards Story of insulting an audience member Yourresponseshould be based on reality, not a lie--that won't help your self-esteem It's about framing the event in a way that is useful and helpful to you. Your ability to craft a differentstoryquicklyis based on your self-esteem/self-image, which is why it is so important to work on building these up. A high self-esteem makes you stronger, more resilient to negative events Listen to Episodes 14 & 15 Very often the best response is no response at all The event happened. Period. No response, no story, no drama. Let it go. A catastrophic event is painful, true, butmay be an opportunity for rebirth Andy Andrews' Gulf oil spill story There are many stories of people who turned catastrophe in to triumph You can use the E+R=O method to change how you feel about the past Nikki Schmutz decided to tell herself a different story, to choose a different response to the abuse she suffered as a child. If someone hurt you in the past, you continue to hurt yourself by replaying it as a victim. You continue to give that person or event power over your life. You can choose rewrite the story in the present This happened, but it is no longer happening. I can live victoriously. I can take control and have power over my present and future. This takes daily practice, but it can be liberating! You are only in control of YOUR response to an event, not anyone else's response. When you don't like how someone responds to an event, that is a new event for you and you must decide how to respond, if at all. Fear of how we think someone will respond often paralyzes us

LIAM 016 – A Journey from Darkness to Light: A Conversation with Nikki Schmutz Oct 17, 2014
    Show notes

In this episode, I speak with Nikki Schmutz about her dramatic journey from darkness to light. Nikki suffered traumatic abuse at the age of 10 and kept it hidden from the world until she was 17. Her journey of healing and rebuilding her life is a story that everyone needs to hear and share with others who have gone through similar experiences. Quotes from the show: It's OK to admit that there's a whole lot wrong with you! - Nikki Schmutz Instead of just making sure I was OK, I would actually take steps forward into new places so that I could live, not just survive! - Nikki Schmutz An unknown path in front of you is not a bad thing. It can be incredibly good, and it can take you to things you never realized you wanted or happiness you never thought that you could have. - Nikki Schmutz What you have been through does not define you. It is just something that happened to you. There's a difference between what defines you and what you have to deal with, and you are in control of what defines you! - Nikki Schmutz Mentioned in this show: NikkiSchmutz On Twitter: @NikkiSchmutz On Facebook: /NikkiAnneSchmutzAuthor Community Orange Magazine Eat, Sleep, Write Run For Fun Cruise Subscription/Social Links: Subscribe on iTunes! LIAM 015 – Make Deposits Into Your Emotional Bank Account! Oct 15, 2014
    Show notes

This episode is a continuation of Episode 14, in which I talk about the importance of your emotional bank account. This episode breaks down some practical steps for making deposits to build up your self-esteem and confidence, which will overflow into every aspect of your life. Quotes from the show: Love is the bridge between you and EVERYTHING! — Rumi Let gratitude be the pillow upon which you kneel to say your nightly prayers. — Maya Angelou Be the change that you wish to see in the world. — Mahatma Gandhi You are not a drop in the ocean. You are the entire ocean, in a drop. — Rumi Show outline: Building up your self-esteem, making deposits into your emotional bank account, is the most important thing you can do for yourself because it impacts all of your thoughts, decisions and actions When you love yourself and have confidence in yourself it creates success in every area of your life: business, personal, social, spiritual You cannot out-perform your self-image/worth Story of the Golden Buddha in Bangkok, Thailand Golden Buddha covered with clay in 1767 to prevent it being stolen by the Burmese invaders. The Burmese army killed everyone, so nobody knew the statue's value Real worth was undiscovered until 1955 We all are precious, valuable, creations, but have been covered with mud so our beauty isn't seen. We need to rediscover our true worth and contribute our beauty to the world! It all begins with love and gratitude Self-love is not conceited or self-centered, but it is essential to your self-esteem and self-worth Love is the bridge between you and EVERYTHING! - Rumi Learn to love and appreciate yourself and that will flow over to others When you don't love and value yourself, you sub-consciously send out a message to others that says: you shouldn't love and value me either! Express gratitude everywhere, for everything, all the time! Let gratitude be the pillow upon which you kneel to say your nightly prayers. - Maya Angelou Let "thank you" and "I love you" be the most used phrases in your daily speech. You alone are responsible for your own self-esteem! Be intentional about working on your self-esteem. Most people don't even think about it! You may not have gotten the love you wanted/need from parents You may have suffered hard situations beyond your control You may have made mistakes--we all have. Forgive yourself. Forgive others! No matter what your self-esteem level is right now, you can increase it to any level you want It will take practice and conscious, intentional effort every day If you want it bad enough, you can produce miracles in your life! Be the change you want to see in the world! The energy you put out, WILL come back to you Give praise - genuinely recognize and praise the people around you. It makes them feel better and like you more It makes YOU feel better by noticing the goodness around you By looking for the good things in the world, you open up that part of the RAS and you will see more good things in your life! Promote what you love, instead of bashing what you hate--you get what you focus on! Focus on what you want in life, not what you don't want Personally, relationally, politically "I want to be healthy and slim," instead of "I don't want to be fat." "I want a loving, trusting, encouraging relationship," instead of "I don't want to be lied to and put down all the time." Mother Teresa said she would never attend an Anti-War or Anti-Abortion protest/rally She would only attend Pro-Peace, Pro-Life celebrations While Self-Esteem is an internal thing, it is built in relationships with other people! Socialize with other like-minded people in settings that give you energy, brightens your world Support groups, civic associations, clubs, gym memberships, church groups (encouraging fellowship)

LIAM 014 – The “Rich” Get Richer! Why Your Emotional Bank Account is so Important Oct 13, 2014
    Show notes

In this episode, I talk about the importance of building up your emotional bank account to allow you to fully engage, with confidence and enthusiasm, in the "game" of life. The reality is when you start winning, you tend to win more often. When you become "rich" in your emotional bank account, having a high self-esteem and confidence level, you will tend to become richer, having more success because you engage in life more fully and enthusiastically. Quotes from the show: You can't stay in your corner of the Forest waiting for others to come to you. You have to go to them sometimes." - Winnie The Pooh (A.A. Milne) Show outline: Ran in the Color-Me Midlo 5K this weekend with my boys It's fun things like this that strengthen our relationship, create fun memories I also ran a 13.1 mile "benchmark" run to see where I am in relation to my goal Because I'm ahead of pace, this boosts my confidence in my ability to reach my goal! Every person on the planet has "bank" accounts Checking/Savings/Retirement When the balance in those accounts is high, we feel "secure" about our financial condition When low or overdrawn,we are stressed Impacts our decision-making ability Our attitude--the energy we put out Our self-worth is often tied to our financial worth Physical health When we feel good/healthy, we engage in life and enjoy doing physical things When low, we are withdrawn and don't engage in the physical aspects of life Emotional/Confidence/Self-Esteem This is my main focus in the work I do! Life is like a game. Self-worth/confidence bank account determines how you play the game of life Poker: The more chips you have, the better you play Monopoly: the more emotional resources you have, the better you play When a player gets ahead and has more resources, the player takes more chances, has more fun, doesn't sweat the occasional loss, and usually wins! So the metaphor of the Rich get Richer holds true. Shyness can be personality type, but is often lack of confidence, fear of rejection You need to make more deposits than withdrawals in ALL of your accounts, but MOSTLY your Emotional accounts Set yourself up for victory! Do things that give you energy, make you feel good Put yourself in situations that at least give you opportunities to win/socialize, etc. Surround yourself with people who lift you up, not tear you down Listen to/watch motivational, self-improvement material YOU are responsible for your own happiness, your own emotional bank account levels Record all of your victories/success just like you would your bank deposits Review them regularly - Nightly/Weekly/Monthly NEVER record failures Failures happen, but only record or talk to yourself in terms of what you will do differently next time! Be very aware of negative self-talk and try to remove it. Love yourself unconditionally for who you are, what you are, where you are! Some of the "richest" people I know are not rich because of their finances. They are rich because of what they believe about themselves and the life they enjoy because of it! LIAM 013 – A Positive Attitude Will Unlock Many of Life’s Doors Oct 10, 2014
    Show notes

In this episode, I talk about how your attitude is the key to success in every area of life--professional, personal, and social. Your attitude, how you show up and the energy you bring to every situation, will open or close doors of opportunities. A positive attitude will not, necessarily, enable you to do everything, but it will help you do everything better. Be sure, every day, in every situation, to choose a useful attitude. Quotes from the show: Your attitude, not your aptitude, will determine your altitude. - Zig Ziglar Your I CAN is more important that your IQ - Robin S. Sharma A positive mental attitude will not let you do everything, but it will let you do everything better! - Zig Ziglar Show outline: Took my boys to see Earth, Wind and Fire last night and had an amazingly fun time Youngest son did not want to go and put on a serious pout Before the show started I said to him "you get to choose whether you have fun or not." It took a while, but he made the transition to choose fun Throughout the show, we danced together! Attitude is EVERYTHING! It's a recurrent theme that is so important to life! Your attitude, not your aptitude, will determine your altitude. -- Zig Ziglar Your I CAN is more important that your IQ -- Robin S. Sharma It's all about how you show up in the world, the energy you put out there This energy (your attitude about yourself, others and situations) attracts and repels people Your success inlifeis determined more by your attitude than your aptitude! Think about some of the most successful people you know. What makes them so successful? Is it natural gifts/abilities? Surely there are smarter, more gifted people It is their attitude--their desire to succeed, there desire to get along with people who can help them? Do you believe in yourself? Do you have an I CAN attitude? Do you realize that other people hold the keys to what you want, so you have to get along with them and make them like you? Youmay be the smartest, brightest, most qualified candidate for a job Do you have an entitlement attitude--I showed up, so give me the job? Do you have a team player--I can contribute great things to make this company great--attitude? You may be the best athlete, but if you can't get along with the coaches and other players, nobody will want you to play for their team Your success in work and personalrelationshipswill be based on your attitude The rich get richer, the happy have good things happen in there lives, largely because of the energy they put out Apositivemental attitude will not let you do everything, but it will let you do everything better! -ZigZiglar A positive, friendly attitude does not guarantee success But a negative, critical, distrustful attitude will always hold you back The good news is you don’t need to have any special skills or training to have a positive attitude, you simply have to choose it! LIAM 012 – You Are A World-Changer! You and the Butterfly Effect Oct 08, 2014
    Show notes

In this episode, I tell you that you are a world-changer! You may not think you are, but you absolutely are. Every day, in every way you interact with people and the world around you, you are sending out messages and energy into the universe that, through the phenomenon of the Butterfly Effect, change the world. The changes may be small or large, but you are changing the world and have since the day you were born. Listen to the show to hear what I mean. Show outline: I want to tell you something you may not have heard in a while, if ever: YOU are a world-changer! Stop looking around. Yes, I mean YOU! You matter! What you do matters. But why you do it matters the most! Email to a friend who stepped out of her comfort zone and went on a medical missions trip to Honduras Rose, the old woman at Sam's Club, impacts the lives of countless people! The story of 3 Bricklayers: Someone approaches three bricklayers and asks "what are you doing?" They reply in turn: What does it look like I'm doing? I'm sweating in hot sun laying bricks. I'm laying bricks to make a day's wage to feed my family I'm building a magnificent Cathedral. People will come from all over the world to see its beauty and marvel at God's blessings. It will change their lives and they will tell more people who will come and their lives will be changed. My part is small, but these bricks and my work are part of a beautiful creation! It's all about perspective: how you see your life as being intimately, directly connected to the lives of others Everyone is important and significant Everything you do and, more importantly, the attitude with which you do it, effects the universe You don't have to go on missions trips or build cathedrals. What you do where you are is vitally important Being a mom or dad, sister, brother, neighbor, coworker Saying "Hi" and smiling to strangers Sharing your faith or world-view Sharing an inspirational message or fun story It doesn't matter how old or young or how popular you are My 11-yo son is a world changer, has been since he was born So are you! We are all connected. We don't live in isolation Think of how others have changed you and your world-view It's about your attitude, how you see yourself and how you show up in the world The Butterfly Effect is constantly working, whether you know it or not. We all effect change in the world. It's never too late to start making a positive impact When you start to feel unimportant, insignificant, remember that YOU are a world-changer and nobody can take that away from you! LIAM 011 – An Unplanned Night in Chicago; The Butterfly Effect of Generosity Oct 06, 2014
    Show notes

In this episode of the Life Is A Marathon show, I talk about how a missed connection in Chicago forced me to spend a night in a hotel, which led me to doing a not-so-random act of kindness, which produced a completely unexpected result--the Butterfly Effect. This story illustrates how we should always have an open mind to the events in our lives and try to find meaning in them. We should be ever vigilant for opportunities to help strangers, but we should also understand that kindness radiates out and touches people in unexpected ways! Show outline: I had been in Denver and was traveling back home to Richmond. I knew I had a 3-hour layover in Chicago and had made plans to have dinner with a good friend. My flight out of Denver got delayed, which frustrated me because I was really looking forward to dinner. My flight was delayed even more so I knew I would miss my connection to Richmond It was around 11:30pm when I arrived in Chicago I took a shuttle to the hotel. It was cold, windy night with a mix of snow and sleet that pelted my face as I dashed from the shuttle to the hotel lobby, where the line to check in was almost out the door. Front-desk clerk was being rude to a young woman whose credit card was declined I checked into my room, but couldn't get the thought of the woman out of my mind I returned to the now empty lobby to find her sitting on a bench crying I paid for her room Thinking that was the reason for my changed plans, I slept well until morning. At checkout, the same clerk was there He told me how amazed he was by my generosity Convinced I had helped the girl and that was the reason for my delay, I told him that there are no accidents in life and that God causes our paths to cross with people for a purpose He stared for a moment and said "I will think about what you have said. For a very long time" It was then that I realized it wasn't the girl I had helped the most. It was the clerk. We need to be open-minded about the frustrating changes to our plans Shift your perspective to be looking for a new opportunity We need to be looking for the potential meaning, or what we can learn from and use to grow out of each situation We need to keep our eyes open for opportunities to help people We need to realize that we never help just one person We benefit from generosity ourselves--personal growth Generosity creates a "butterfly effect" that touches lives in ways we can never imagine. LIAM 010 – You Are Always Training for Something. Is it Success, Mediocrity, or Failure? Oct 03, 2014
    Show notes

In this episode of the Life Is A Marathon show, I talk about how every thought, word, decision, action, is a form of training. You are constantly conditioning your mind and body to do the very same thing. Set the intention of training for success instead of mediocrity or failure. Quotes from the show: No matter what you do, you are always training for something! What can you do to promote world peace? Go home and love your family! - Mother Teresa Show outline: I learned so much about life and mindset by training for a marathon You CAN Go the Distance! You CAN change your life by changing your thoughts Blog post in Aug. 2014 - You are always training for something! You are always training your brain, which trains your body, which creates habits, which directs your life! Running/Workout example Skip a run/workout because it's raining or you just don't feel like it Students/Studying Know you should study, but put it off until later You DO NOT work best under pressure - That's a lie It's more fun to text or Facetime than to unplug and concentrate Relationships Not asking someone out because of fear of rejection Putting off that difficult conversation Choosingto be sarcastic It's not cute, it's not funny, it's not helping your relationships It's all about intention and attitude Your intention, attitude, outlook determine how you show up in the world Look for the good everywhere Live like an explorer, always looking for new lands and hidden treasure You need to START and build momentum/inertia A rocket consumes 80% of it's fuel in the first few seconds just to get off the ground An airplane burns fuel and the pilot makes massive adjustments to get the plane up and pointed in the right direction. In flight there are constant, but minor, course corrections due to wind or to avoid storms Everyone on the plane feels the takeoff and the initial direction changes Once in-flight, the adjustments are barely felt at all You CAN Do it Train to change Train to win Celebrate and recalibrate along the way Invest in yourself - you are your greatest asset Surround yourself with positive, encouraging people Put educational/motivation information in your ears and eyes Invest a coach, or at least, personal development programs Mentioned in this show: Bruce Van Horn - You are always training for something!
