LIAM 058 – Affirmations for Abundant Living Jan 28, 2015
    Show notes

I am confident. I am secure in who I am. I am thrilled that you are using affirmations to support your personal growth! These are examples of how you can use affirmations for abundant living. Too often, our words and thoughts are negative and counter-productive. I'm here to help you change that. Listen as I talk to you about using the power of affirmations: Listen on iTunes or Listen to/download this episode here: Show Outline: We think between 50-70k thoughts per day. About 90-98% are the same. 70-80% are negative. What we focus on increases, so focus on the good things, the things you want more of! When speaking to children, instead of "don't drop this!" we should say "please carry this and gently set it down on the table. I'm proud of you!" If we spoke to our friends the way we speak to ourselves, we wouldn't have any friends. Cognitive dissonance is the mental stress or discomfort experienced by an individual who holds two or more contradictory beliefs, ideas, or values at the same time, or is confronted by new information that conflicts with existing beliefs, ideas, or values. Leon Festinger's theory of cognitive dissonance focuses on how humans strive for internal consistency. When inconsistency (dissonance) is experienced, individuals tend to become psychologically uncomfortable and they are motivated to attempt to reduce this dissonance, as well as actively avoiding situations and information which are likely to increase it. Affirmation statements: Personal, present: "I am" not "I want" or "I will" Also good are "I have", "I know," "I love" Focused on what you want: "I am prosperous" "I am enjoying financial freedom" instead of "I am debt free" because the focus is still on the debt rather than the result of not having debt Use feelings: "I am excited about my life" "I am so happy and grateful for the inner-peace I feel" Actively, right now, feel the feeling you want to feel when the affirmation is completely true in your life Support your goals, dreams, what you want in your life Can be phrased as a question "what is it about me that makes people like to be around me?" "what am I doing to be so successful?" LIAM 057 – Life Plan: Step 6 – Work the Plan. Make Your Dreams Come True! Jan 25, 2015
    Show notes

Step 6 in creating your Life Plan is where all the magic happens, but it is the step most people skip: doing the actual work, working the plan to make your dreams come true! For a long list of reasons, many people will do all of the preparatory work, creating a life plan in great detail, yet they will not follow through and do the actual work required to make the plan work. Listen as I walk you through Step 6 of creating your Life Plan: Listen on iTunes or Listen to/download this episode here: Show Outline: Life Plans are like gym memberships. Many people will join the gym, pay the deposit, pay the monthly dues, but never actually go to the gym to use the equipment to get in better shape. There are many reasons people do not follow through and take the actions necessary to create the life of their dreams. The Alchemist, by Paulo Coelho, is a MUST READ book that deals with this very issue. It is a book about a boy who discovers his "personal legend" and sets off to achieve it. Along the way, he has doubts, hardships, victories, comes to a great place and almost stops there, etc. Quotes from The Alchemist: …everyone believes the world's greatest lie. It's this: that at a certain point in our lives, we lose control of what's happening to us, and our lives become controlled by fate. That's the world's greatest lie. It's what you have always wanted to accomplish. Everyone, when they are young knows what their destiny is. At that point in their lives, everything is clear and everything is possible. They are not afraid to dream, and to yearn for everything they would like to see happen to them in their lives. But, as time passes, a mysterious force begins to convince them that it will be impossible for them to realize their destiny. When you want something, all the universe conspires to help you achieve it The problem is that most people want safety, comfort and to not be afraid, to just keep things as they are--and that's usually what they get... Your fear of regret must be greater than your fear of failure in order to achieve your dreams. ...before a dream is realized, the Soul of the World tests everything that was learned along the way. It does this not because it is evil, but so that we can, in addition to realizing our dreams, master the lessons we've learned as we've moved toward that dream. That's the point at which most people give up. It's the point at which, as we say in the language of the desert, one 'dies of thirst just when the palm trees have appeared on the horizon.' ...you're different from me, because you want to realize your dreams. I just want to dream... I'm afraid it will all be a disappointment, so I prefer to just dream about it. Do you want to realize your dreams, or do you simply want to dream about your dreams? Well, what if I decide to stay? …Let me tell you what will happen. You'll be the counselor of the oasis …You'll marry Fatima, and you'll both be happy for a year…. And you'll get better and better at understanding omens, because the desert is the best teacher there is…. Sometime during the second year, you'll remember about the treasure. The omens will begin insistently to speak of it, and you'll try to ignore them…During the third year, the omens will continue to speak of your treasure and your destiny. You'll walk around, night after night, at the oasis, and Fatima will be unhappy because she'll feel it was she who interrupted your quest. But you will love her, and she'll return your love… So you won't blame her. But many times you'll walk the sands of the desert, thinking that maybe you could have left… that you could have trusted more in your love for Fatima. Because what kept your at the oasis was your own fear that you might never come back. At that point, the omens will tell you that your treasure is buried forever…. Then, sometime during the fourth year, the omens will abandon you, because you've stopped listening to them.

LIAM 055 – Life Plan: Step 5 – Putting the Plan Together Jan 20, 2015
    Show notes

Step 5 in creating your Life Plan is bringing all of the work from the previous steps and putting them together to create your actionable Life Plan. Listen as I walk you through Step 5 of your Life Plan: Listen on iTunes or Listen to/download this episode here: Show Outline: This is where it all comes together. All of the dreaming, scripting, and rating of the areas of your life will now come together to create a cohesive Life Plan. If you haven't completed the previous 4 steps, you need to complete them before you can do Step 5 of creating your Life Plan. Start a new document on your computer, or get out a blank piece of paper Write as the heading: My Life Plan Put today's date underneath the heading Write a "Dream Life" affirmation I am joyfully, actively and intentionally living the life of my dream. I am .... (some details from the dream in Step 1). My dreams become reality as I intentionally step in the direction of my dreams. Write a "Voices from My Past" affirmation I am now and have been a positive influence in the lives of many people. Their lives are better because of me and the way I live, love, and invest in creating meaningful relationships... (include a few details from the script of Step 2). Write the following for each Spoke in the Wheel of Life (Steps 3 & 4) Name Spoke 1 Write this Spoke's Purpose Statement (Step 3) Write this Spoke's Ideal/Desired Condition (Step 3) Write "Current Reality Rating:" and put in the number from Step 4 Write an Affirmation statement using "Why so high?" answers from Step 4 I am feeling proud that I have.... I am excited about the momentum I am creating to further my progress toward... What needs to happen to make the rating 1 point higher (Step 4) Action items to move it 1 point higher I will do ____ by _____ List a few action items required for moving 1 point higher Write an Action Items Affirmation I am joyfully, actively, and intentionally doing... to make 1 point higher my current reality Repeat the above steps for Spokes 2 - 7 You now have a Life Plan It includes your Dream Life, your ideal impact on other people, your vision for the seven areas on the Wheel of Life, a realistic evaluation of your current condition, and specific actions you need to take to improve your current condition for each life area. LIAM 054 – Life Plan: Step 4 – Rate Your Wheel of Life Jan 18, 2015
    Show notes

Step 4 in creating your Life Plan is to honestly evaluate where you are now in comparison to your ideal wish for each spoke in the Wheel of Life. Once you know where you are, you can take specific action to move one step closer to the life of your dreams! Listen as I walk you through Step 4 of your Life Plan: Listen on iTunes or Listen to/download this episode here: Show Outline: Review Step 3 to understand your ideal desire, your 10, for each area of life. The Wheel of Life has 7 spokes: Spiritual Physical Mental/Intellectual/Emotional Family Personal/Social/Friends Career Financial Based on your perfect wish for each spoke, rate your current condition on a scale from 1 to 10, with 1 being "just getting started," and 10 being you have reached your dreams for this area. Whatever number you pick for your current situation is the right number for you! Do not judge the number in any way. Just relax and know that this is where you are and that it's OK to be right where you are for each area of life. Thinking a low number is "bad" is not a useful thought. Using the Solutions Focus approach, as discussed in LIAM Session 23, ask yourself "why did I rate it so high?" If you rated a spoke a 5, ask yourself "Why so high? Why a 5? Why not a 4 or a 3?" Make a list of the reasons you rated each spoke as high as you did. Even if you picked a 1 for some area, why not a 0? This method shows you that you have already made progress, maybe significant progress toward your goal for each area of life. It gives you the feeling of accomplishment, which creates confidence to move even higher! Now, for each area, make a list of a few things that would need to happen to move just 1 point higher on the scale. Let's just take one step at a time, set ourselves up for victory, and create momentum! LIAM 053 – Journey Well with Mary McManus Jan 15, 2015
    Show notes

Mary McManus contracted paralytic polio in 1959 at the age of 5, suffered domestic violence and abuse to age 17. And that's just the beginning of Mary's story. Listen to us have an amazing conversation about the course of her life and her refusal to let circumstances define her. Life truly is a marathon, and Mary has journeyed well! Listen on iTunes or Listen to/download this episode here: About Mary: Mary McManus grew up in Westchester, NY and contracted paralytic polio in 1959 at the age of 5, during one of the last polio epidemics in the United States. She was at the height of her 20 year award winning career as a social worker at the VA when she was diagnosed with post polio syndrome, a progressive neuromuscular disease. She did not take the diagnosis of post polio syndrome sitting down. She embarked on a healing odyssey that began with a leap of faith as she left her social work career to heal her life and to follow her new found passion as a poet and writer. The first poem she penned in February of 2007 was "Running the Race," a foreshadowing of her 2009 Boston Marathon run. Her pen became her divining rod for healing. Mary is a 2009 Boston Marathon finisher, blogger, the author of 5 books of inspirational poetry and her memoir, "Coming Home: A Memoir of Healing, Hope and Possibility.” In her latest book, “Journey Well,” Mary rewrites the story she tells in her memoir. The facts of her past are unchanged but the pain and terror are healed. She holds a BS in Public Relations from Boston University, an MSW from Boston College and many fond memories of her social work career at the VA in her heart. She is enjoying her retirement and delights in running, swimming, fund raising, writing and sharing her inspirational journey. Mary was gracious enough to continue our conversation after this portion of the podcast ended. We had a very special conversation about the writing of her new book, Journey Well, and how important it is to give yourself the gift of time when healing from a physical or emotional injury. LIAM 052 – Life Plan: Step 3 – The Wheel of Life Jan 14, 2015
    Show notes

Step 3 in creating your Life Plan is to understand that you are doing a complete LIFE plan, not just a career, personal, or family plan. Using Zig Ziglar's "Wheel of Life" model, we look at the 7 areas of life and define our purpose statement and our ideal target for each area. Listen as I walk you through the process: Listen on iTunes or Listen to/download this episode here: Show Outline: "What would you do if you knew that you could not fail?" Most people spend more time planning their weddings and vacations than they do planning their lives! The Wheel of Life has 7 spokes: Spiritual Physical Mental/Intellectual/Emotional Family Personal/Social/Friends Career Financial Write a purpose statement for each category Example for Physical: My body is the host to my mind and spirit; it is the tool I use to execute my dreams. My purpose is to care for it as my most precious possession. Example for Career: My purpose is to use the energy and abilities I have been given to do work that is meaningful and fulfilling to me while serving and adding value to the lives of others Write your ideal target/goal for each category Example for Physical: To be able to run qualifying times for the Boston Marathon each year as I age; to weigh between 150-160 lbs; cholesterol lowering info under 200; to continue to be cancer-free. LIAM 051 – Life Plan: Step 2 – Hear the Voices of Your Past Jan 11, 2015
    Show notes

Step 2 in creating your Life Plan is to recognize that the best investments we can make during our lifetime is the investment in loving relationships. A person may accumulate vast amounts of money and material possessions, but if he reaches the end of his life without friends and loved ones around him, he dies a poor man. Listen as I walk you through another dream sequence that focuses on relationships and hearing the voices of your past: Listen on iTunes or Listen to/download this episode here: Show Outline: If you were on trial for the crime of being a kind and generous person, would there be enough evidence to convict you? People may not remember what you said or did, but they will always remember how you made them feel. Viktor Frankl used this method of looking at life with his fellow inmates who wanted to give up and commit suicide. I like this better than the approach used by Stephen Covey and Michael Gerber, where you imagine you are attending your own funeral. I don't want you to visualize being dead! Wayne Dyer says "never allow any thought into your imagination that you don't want to materialize" Imagine you are near the end of your life. You are still mentally sound, but your time to pass is near. You have gathered around you all of the people who have been close to you. Your spouse, children, grandchildren, other family, friends, neighbors, colleagues, pastors/priests/rabbis/religious leaders. This is an opportunity for the people you have gathered to talk to you. They are here to tell you about your life and the impact that you had on them. List the people: Spouse, children, brothers/sisters, friends, neighbors, colleagues/co-workers, religious leaders Dissociate from yourself and become that person. See yourself through that person's eyes and feel the feelings that person has about you. As that person, start talking to you about your life. How you affected them. The difference you made. The help/encouragement you gave. The contribution you made. The security/safety you provided. The laughs and tears shared. These are the voices of the people from your life telling you about the difference you made in their lives. Write this conversation down. Script it out for each person you listed. The feelings are so important. If you are feeling insignificant, unimportant, let's do this experiment. Go through this scenario in your mind--all the people telling you what an impact you made in their lives. Imagine what that will feel like when it happens. Can you feel it? How does it feel? Do you feel the joy, gratitude, love. Does it make you feel significant and important? Those feelings are real, just as real as they will be when it really happens to you. These feelings are available to you right now! You don't have to wait for this event to happen. You can live each day with this feeling and doing so will produce the real relationships you are just now imagining. LIAM 050 – Life Plan: Step 1 – Start Dreaming Again! Jan 08, 2015
    Show notes

Step 1 in creating your Life Plan is to start dreaming again. As adults, we still have the ability to dream; most of us, however, have simply stopped doing it! If you want to live the life of your dreams, you need to dream about your life! Listen as I walk you through the first of these Life Plan sessions: Listen on iTunes or Listen to/download this episode here: Show Outline: "People never lose the ability to dream, they just quit doing it. If that's you, start dreaming again!" See this popular Tweet Everything that exists right now exists because somebody imagined it at some point. The dreaded "hows" are what keep people from dreaming. Our job is to dream, God's job is to make it happen. If you don't ask, the answer is always no If you don't dream, it will never come true Go in with the goal of being devastated if it doesn't work out (LIAM 37: I hope you dance!) Don't let people who never followed their dreams tell you not to follow yours! People never do anything without, for at least a split second, imagining themselves doing it. Put yourself in the future and think about the past. 5 years ago, you found a magic lamp and a genie granted you all of your wishes. Not just 3. All of your wishes! Write a letter to your best friend, who you haven't seen for the last 5 years. Tell him/her everything about your life right now--what you are doing, who you are doing it with, the success you've had over the last 5 years. What were the steps you took, the people you approached, the products/services you created. Every door you knocked on opened for you, every decision was the right decision, etc. Mentioned in this show: LIAM Team Life Coaching Community Subscription/Social Links: Subscribe on iTunes!
