LIAM 069 – Read Books. Feed Your Head! Mar 03, 2015
    Show notes

Many people ask me if I can make a book recommendation to help in their personal development. My answer is "Yes, read books. That will help in your personal development!" Sadly, most adults spend 15-20 hours per week watching TV when they could be reading an exciting novel or a book that will teach them more about life. Listen as I talk about the changes I made in my own life to become an intentional reader: Listen on iTunes or Listen to/download this episode here: Show Outline: Question: can you recommend a book that teaches.... Answer: Yes, read a book! It almost doesn't matter what book you read. Reading will improve your life! Most adults stop reading after they finish their schooling Most adults in America watch 15-20 hours of TV per week! The food we eat has a direct impact on what our bodies become Same is true with our minds! I gave up listening to and watching news programs many years ago Most TV, news, music - message is dark, defeating, negative, you'll never get ahead Most TV shows portray women as sex objects, men are idiots, and kids know everything and run the families. It's about how you choose to spend your time. When you say "Yes" to one thing, you are saying "No" to something else. I read between 3 - 5 books per month--most of which are audiobooks. It's a very rare thing to find a book, fiction or non-fiction, where the theme is negative, self-defeating. Most books are very motivational, uplifting, good defeats evil, teaches the value of self-esteem and working hard to achieve your dreams, etc. Biographies are a great place to start if you're looking for good books to read. Challenge: Turn your TV off for 30 days and read books instead. "You will be the same person in five years as you are today except for the people you meet and the books you read." - Charlie Tremendous Jones "The man who doesn't read good books has no advantage over the man who can't read them" - Mark Twain I made reading books/listening to audiobooks a huge priority as part of my personal development Bruce's Reading List "Remember what the dormouse said: 'Feed your head, feed your head'" - Grace Slick Mentioned in this show: Bruce's Reading List Boston Marathon #Miles4Smiles Fundraiser Download: Affirmations for Abundant Living LIAM Team Life Coaching Community Subscription/Social Links: Subscribe on iTunes! LIAM 068 – Alphabet Success with Tim Fargo Mar 01, 2015
    Show notes

Tim Fargo, successful entrepreneur and author of Alphabet Success, is my guest today. His early ambition was simply to get a union job on a loading dock. He did much better than that! He paved his road to success with old-fashioned determination, hard work, and an unwillingness to let failure and setbacks define him. Listen to this great conversation: Listen on iTunes or Listen to/download this episode here: Quotes from Show: His goal was to get a union job on the loading docks. He did significantly better than that. You may be thinking about it, but the successful person is doing something about it. Maybe it's going to work or maybe it's not, but you'll never know unless you try. Don't hold yourself accountable for another person's behavior. "Do" is the key element to success. We used "jujitsu." We took the negative energy they threw at us and flipped it into a positive. Don't be so quick to label something as "bad." It may be the thing that takes you to success. It's never an easy thing to do but you have to end toxic relationships. If you are doing all the heavy lifting for someone else, you are training them into a bad behavior. LIAM 067 – You Are Response-Able Feb 26, 2015
    Show notes

You are "Response-Able"! You have the ability to choose any response to any event. Are you choosing responses that leave you as the victim, or are you choose responses that are useful, beneficial to you and your setting, and move you forward in a positive way? The choice is yours, whether you think so or not. Choose wisely! Listen as I walk you through some ways to choose differently: Listen on iTunes or Listen to/download this episode here: Show Outline: The great myth: we are entitled to a great life. Someone else, certainly not us, is responsible for delivering happiness to our doorstep in a pretty box. There is only one person responsible for the life you live: YOU! Assume 100% responsibility for everything in or not in your life! Your achievements, results, quality of relationships, health, income, feelings, EVERYTHING! If you think other people or the government are responsible for giving you these things, then you better learn how to be happy with the things they give you! It's so much easier to play the blame game, but that leaves you a victim. My boss, my spouse, the economy, the government Take 100% responsibility for everything--your successes AND your failures. Even if you aren't, it serves you better to assume you somehow caused the situation--if you had a part in creating it, you can do something to change it! If you want to live the life of your dreams, you have to assume 100% responsibility for creating it--otherwise you live the life of someone else's dream! Starting today and for the rest of your life, assume 100% responsibility for everything that does or doesn't happen to you E+R=0 Jack Canfield learned it from Dr. Robert Resnick The Success Principles It all comes down to how you respond to events in your life. Your response it what controls the outcome It is not limiting factors (money, race, gender, governments, health) that stop you because many people have succeed under the same or worse conditions. If it's not the limiting factors, it must be the way they responded to the factors! It's not the event, it's the story you tell yourself about the event, the images you hold in your mind about the event and yourself. You only have total control over 3 things: the thoughts you think, the images you visualize, and the actions you take How you use these 3 things determines everything you experience If you want to change the outcome, change the story, rewrite the movie/images, choose a victorious, or just more useful response Example of being stuck in an airport because of canceled flights. Why are some people completely freaked out, yelling at ticket/gate agents, etc. and some take a big breath, sit down and read a book? Why is it that you cannot stand to be around a certain person, yet others love to be around that same person? Why do 2 people show up for the same job every day, one hates it, the other is happy to have a job? Stop complaining about things you cannot control or to people who cannot fix it. You can't change the weather! You can move somewhere else, but you can change what it is right now Your boss/coworker cannot fix your marriage, your spouse cannot fix your boss You just create a reputation of being a complainer and someone who gets upset about everything! You are "Response-Able"! You have the ability to respond to any event in a way that is useful to you, leaves you in control of your emotions, and moves you forward in a positive way. Choose a "useful" response! If stuck in a traffic jam, is it useful to get angry, frustrated and yell at people who can't hear you anyway? If your health suddenly changes, is it useful to be angry, grumpy, and convinced you cannot still have a good life and have a positive impact on people? If a relationship ends, is it useful to stay at home everyday, thinking about the past, and not go out, make friends and new relationships? sometimes,

LIAM 065 – “I Am Not My Body!” with Steven Webb Feb 12, 2015
    Show notes

Steven Webb and I met online when he wrote a review of my book. His review is titled: "I’m paralysed, why read a book about marathon running?" Steven broke his neck in a swimming accident when he was 19 and has been paralyzed since then. Steven reminds us that we are much more than our bodies and how we perceive ourselves is how others will perceive us. Listen to this moving conversation: Listen on iTunes or Listen to/download this episode here: Quotes from the Show: I’m paralysed, why read a book about marathon running? In the Summer of 1991, Steven dove into a swimming pool and never walked again. After 12 months in the hospital, I came home with a pretty different perspective on life. I had a zest for living and an appreciation for all the things I had. It's so easy to judge someone when they've hit rock-bottom and say "you've been through so much in life, what's wrong with you?" I realized that I was responsible for everything. How I react to what happens to me is what causes my life to go good or bad. I was able to focus my mind on what was important. On gratitude and appreciation as opposed to all the bad things. I discovered tolerance for other people. We're all on different levels. Everyone's got their own problems. We see everything the way we are, and if things aren't the way we are, we get frustrated. I didn't let my disability get me down. I focused on my ability. It never occurred to me people saw my wheelchair, because I didn't see it as part of me. My body is not who I am. If you see yourself as a victim, or in a negative way, that's the way other people will see you. After a few encounters, people stop seeing "Steven in a wheelchair" and start seeing Steven. The subconscious mind doesn't care if a habit is right or wrong. It just cares if you are used to doing it. People don't care what you say. They remember how you made them feel. The moving road: there are no straight roads; it wobbles; it moves; that's life. LIAM 063 – Releasing Your Greatest Self with Dr. Steve Maraboli Feb 08, 2015
    Show notes

Dr. Steve Maraboli joins me for a powerful repeat performance. Steve is a life-changing speaker, bestselling author, and Behavioral Science academic who has an amazing gift for bluntly telling it like it is, yet filling you with his love, compassion, and desire to see you release your greatest self. Listen to this moving conversation: Listen on iTunes or Listen to/download this episode here: Quotes from the Show: I may not control the events that happen, but I do control the labels that I place on those events When you embrace the power you have, you can change the life you have. If you have the expectation that change is supposed to be easy, you will never change. You can't just want change. You have to live it; you have to breath it; it's something you have to DO! Actions give our thoughts integrity! It's not a matter of growing wise, it's a matter of shrinking wise. It's never about adding! There is no "key" to happiness. It's not locked up. If you're in prison, it's a prison of your own choosing. Releasing your greatest self is about making a decision to not stay in your self-inflicted prison. I've met so few people of have money. For most people, the money has them. What kind of story do you have? Do you a hero story or a victim story? Do you have an empowered story or a dis-empowered story? There is nothing preceding you other than a history that you cannot touch. Once you change the story a little bit, then the chemicals that speak to your body will also change. When you release yourself from the burden other people's opinions and actions, and you focus on the only thing you can control, which is yourself, you are doing yourself and the world a huge favor! You'll never have a shortage of people who are willing to fight to maintain the poison that is killing them. Nothing is as unpopular among friends as positive change. It takes courage to be the greatest version of yourself. It's not enough to step out of your comfort zone. You have to create a new comfort zone or your will go back to the old one. Life is hilarious. It offers endless reasons for us to laugh! Every single day is a once-in-a-lifetime event! Enjoy it! Make it count! I want to live in such a way that even my obituary is a best-seller! 99% of our stresses are about yesterday and tomorrow--two days you will never be able to control! If your Today looks like your Yesterday, that's a choice you've made. LIAM 062 – Stop Rehearsing Your Failures Feb 06, 2015
    Show notes

The life you rehearse the most will be the life you live! Most of us want to live amazing lives filled with success, happiness, and love. However, most of us rehearse--in our thoughts, words, and actions--the very life we do not want to live! Listen as I talk about rehearsing the life of your dreams! Listen on iTunes or Listen to/download this episode here: Show Outline: We are all writers. 24/7 we are writing and rewriting the story of our lives Session 58 - Life is only a reflection, Bruce, of whatever you say. Visualizing the life you want is the most important part of getting the life you want Life Plan - visualize your dream life, voices from the past, perfect wheel spoke Olympic divers, pole vaulters, high jumpers, visualize every step, pull twist, -- victory They are rehearsing Most of us spend more time reliving, rehearsing, if you will, the past, our failures, instead of what we want We replay our mistakes, poor choices, words we wish we could take back We replay--like Session 60, the Great Cloud of Witnesses--what others have said or done that hurt or upset us Actors rehearse their parts with such focus, they take on the personality of the character Same with us--we become what we think about We create what we focus on We get really good at what we spend the most time doing What we rehearse becomes how we see ourselves, what we think about ourselves and the world "How I see myself is how others will see me." - Steven Web Focus on what you want Rewrite the script of the part you want to play today, tomorrow and the rest of your life Start rehearsing that role There is some truth to the phrase "fake it until you make it" Everyone starts at the beginning. We want to ride a bike, we see ourselves as a bike rider, we keep practicing until it becomes something we do naturally Start today! Start being, right now, the person you want to be tomorrow! LIAM 061 – The Prison of Perfectionism Feb 03, 2015
    Show notes

I meet so many people who are living in prison. It's a prison of their own making. It's the prison of perfectionism. Listen as I talk about the prison, how we put ourselves in it, and how to set yourself free: Listen on iTunes or Listen to/download this episode here: Show Outline: In my coaching practice, there's something I encounter too frequently--people in the prison of perfectionism. Writers who won't write, musicians who won't record, artists who won't draw or paint--or, at least, won't show their work to other people. We believe our work must be perfect before we can show it to anyone. The blog post The business article The novel The painting The software project The simple journal or diary entry The dream of an amazing life It's not the fear of failure, it's the fear of criticism Maybe it was parents or teachers who told you it must be perfect. It's a lie. There's no such thing! If perfection exists, there wouldn't be software upgrades, new models of cars, 2nd editions of books I could have just recorded 1 podcast, instead of 61 and counting until I get it right! Imperfect work shared will change more lives than perfect work kept hidden! My software development taught me: create a minimally viable product, launch, then improve Start where you are. Use what you have. Do what you can. – Arthur Ashe Set yourself up for victory, not failure. Build momentum Get feedback Change course as needed Stop waiting for all of the conditions to be right, all the lights to be green, all thoughts to be organized You don't need more time, you don't need more money, you don't need more ideas Just start! Get feedback, make improvements along the way Ms. Frizzle (The Magic School Bus): Take chances, make mistakes, get messy! In my experience as a writer, speaker, musician--the work I thought was the most flawed is often the work that deeply touches someone's life. You have the ability to change the entire world--for one person! Enjoy the process. Have fun!! Put yourself on parole! Swing the gates wide! Set yourself free from the prison of perfectionism! LIAM 060 – A Great Cloud of Witnesses Feb 01, 2015
    Show notes

People ask me why I chose "Life Is A Marathon" as my life's motto. It's comes from my interpretation of the Bible verse "Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses... let us run with endurance the race that is set before us!" (Hebrews 12:1) The problem is what we believe the "great cloud of witnesses" is saying, yelling, at us. Is it condemnation, criticism and ridicule? Or is it shouts of encouragement, love, and support? How you run your race will depend on how you interpret the cloud of witnesses.
