LIAM 089 – I’m Still Alive! What a Year It Has Been! Apr 06, 2015
    Show notes

One year ago, April 7, 2014, I went into the hospital for a "routine" Prostate cancer surgery. There were complications. For the next few months, my life was very than it had been prior to surgery. I had no idea what the future held for my health, my family, or my career. I never would have guessed my life would turn out as it has over the last year! LIAM 088 – QCT: You CAN Control Your Thoughts! Apr 05, 2015
    Show notes

Quick Coaching Tip (QCT): You CAN control your thoughts! This may sound obvious to you, but I encounter people, every day, who say things like "I can't stop worrying about..." or "I can't stop thinking about..." I understand being stuck in all-consuming, negative thoughts. However, this is exactly the time we need to be reminded that our thoughts do not control us, we control them. We just have to practice doing it! LIAM 087 – I Want You to be Victorious! Apr 03, 2015
    Show notes

"Victorious warriors win first, then go to war." - Sun-tzu. Victorious living starts with seeing yourself as already victorious before you actually are. A life lived in pursuit of a clear vision is a life that is not easily defeated or blown off course by circumstances. This is the life I want for you. I want you to have such a clear vision of who and what you want to be that you are willing to go through anything to get it! Listen as I explain how: Listen on iTunes or Listen to/download this episode here: Show Outline: Question: are you tired, worn down, beaten down, just going through the motions? Waiting for the day to end and dreading waking up in the morning? I hope this is not you. If it isn't please listen anyway--you will get something you can share with someone else. If it is you, I know what what you are going through--been there, done that, have many t-shirts! I want you to know it doesn't have to be this way! I want you to be Victorious! You ask How? I'm tired, I'm worn out, beaten down, just waiting for the bell to ring. "Victorious warriors win first, then go to war, while defeated warriors go to war first and then seek to win." - Sun-tzu Reacting vs Responding, impulse vs strategy It's all about vision! Myopia: a vision condition in which close objects are seen clearly, but objects farther away appear blurred. Greek: literally meaning "trying to see like a mole" My lack of consistent success in most areas of my life was due to lack of vision, lack of clarity about what I wanted, who I wanted to be Yes, habits determine our future, but our behavior directly models our vision of ourselves, others, the world You must visualize the life you want, the person you want to be, the impact you want to make on the world All top athletes, actors, dancers, - all saw themselves being it, long before they became it Life Plan Step 1: The genie visualization Step 2: The cloud of witnesses exercise LIAM 50: Life Plan Step 1: Start Dreaming Again! Create a personal: purpose and mission/vision statement: Purpose: to love, serve, and add value to lives of others Mission: Using the love, wisdom, abilities, and life experiences God has given me, I reach, teach, and empower people to love themselves and others, overcome challenges, think and act intentionally, set and reach goals, experience true peace and joy, and live passionately as the fullest expression of who they were created to be. Now I know how to show up in any situation: a meeting, a call, a podcast, friends, family "Victorious warriors win first, then go to war." - Sun-tzu Your endurance is directly proportional to the clarity of your vision. LIAM 086 – QCT: Success Comes from Winning Habits Apr 01, 2015
    Show notes

Quick Coaching Tip (QCT): I recorded this on April 1st, which is the beginning of the 2nd quarter of the year, which means 25% of 2015 is already gone. What have you done and what are you going to do to make this the best, most successful year of your life? Hoping and occasional action will not deliver the results you want. You must decide, with clarity, what it is you want, then develop winning habits. Our habits determine our futures! LIAM 085 – The Zig Ziglar Legacy with Tom Ziglar Mar 31, 2015
    Show notes

Tom Ziglar is the son of the legendary Zig Ziglar, who is estimated to have influenced over 250 million people during his lifetime. Tom spent 45 minutes talking with me about his dad and the legacy of Zig Ziglar. The the on-going work of Tom and the Ziglar team, Zig's influence is spreading farther and faster to change people's lives. Listen to this touching conversation: Listen on iTunes or Listen to/download this episode here: Show quotes: I was blessed to have the best father a person could ever imagine. As good as dad was on stage, he was even better at home! He brought hope and encouragement wherever he was. When Zig was talking one-on-one with you, you felt like you were the only one in the room! The real difference-making in the world comes when you show people, one-on-one, that you care about them. Dad said you can do whatever you want to do, just do it with 100% integrity and 100% effort. While dad was alive, we estimate he impacted about 250 million people! Every night for over a year I went to bed worried that I had ruined dad's reputation--which was the wrong mindset. Dad's reputation actually got stronger. Be, Do, and Have philosophy: You have to be before you can do, and you have to do before you can have. What you have and what you do can be taken away from you, but who you are can only be surrendered. When I work, every single day, on who I am, the doing and the having are a natural off-shoot of that. Everything is about the scalability of trust. If people trust you, they will want to do business with you. I want this year to be the best travel year I've ever had. I give the flight crew little gifts. I changes the entire atmosphere on the plane. Your attitude is reflection of your character and your character is a reflection of your habits. The greatest thing we can teach our kids is the discipline of creating winning habits. Late in his life, dad lost his short-term memory. He said "I've still got a lot to say so we've got to figure out a new way of do it!" With his memory loss, dad reached new people in a new way who he would not have reached with his full health. LIAM 084 – The Stress Response with Bill Cortright Mar 30, 2015
    Show notes

Bill Cortright is the author of The NEW Stress-Response Diet and Lifestyle Program, a highly sought-after speaker, trainer, and a seven-time bodybuilding champion. He was significantly overweight as a child and young adult, and was diagnosed with diabetes at 21 years old. He embarked on a life-long mission to discover WHY his body was storing fat and discovered a direct correlation with stress. Listen to treatment diabetes info highly educational conversation: Listen on iTunes or Listen to/download this episode here: Show quotes: I started my first diet at age 9, and I would go on to lose 100 pounds three times. I was diagnosed as a type two diabetic at age 21 and told I would probably lose my eyesight by 30. I went on from being a fat kid winning seven bodybuilding championships. After looking at thousands of lab results I discovered one component of our metabolism that we now call the stress response. The stress response is our most primitive, hormonal, survival response. It can never be shut off, it can only be managed. People want to get rid of stress, but you can't. You can master the response, but you can't get rid of stress. The highest stress point of the day, for most people, is around 3:00 pm. Belly fat is called the "stress belly" because that's where the body stores fat due to stress. When the stress response is not managed, it shuts down your metabolism. We were designed for survival. When we see the Saber-toothed Tiger, we are meant to react, not to think! The Red Zone is reactive--fight or flight. The Green Zone is responsive--creative, problem solving, recuperation. Problems come when you are constantly living in the Red Zone. To manage the stress response, you have 3 lines of defense: Diet, exercise, mindfulness training The #1 most important thing for managing the stress response is diet! Stress is not going away. Are reacting or are you responding to it? If your Insulin level is above 10, you cannot burn fat. It's simple, scientific fact. There is no bad metabolism. It is either working or not working. There are two types of metabolisms: lions and cheetahs. Exercise is stress. You may be doing the wrong type of exercise for your metabolism type! I've been cheating for 30 years! I have a weekly "junk night" when I eat anything I want! LIAM 083 – QCT: Hope Must Be Combined With Action To Change The Future Mar 29, 2015
    Show notes

Quick Coaching Tip (QCT): Hope is a good thing and sounds great in speeches, but it is not an actionable plan for success. Many of us hope our lives will get better--better finances, relationships, health, etc.--but we do not take the actions necessary to bring about the changes we want. If you keep doing what you have been doing, you will keep getting what you have been getting. LIAM 082 – Replay: An Unplanned Night in Chicago Mar 26, 2015
    Show notes

In this episode, I talk about how a missed connection in Chicago forced me to spend a night in a hotel, which led me to doing a not-so-random act of kindness, which produced a completely unexpected result--the Butterfly Effect. This story illustrates how we should always have an open mind to the events in our lives and try to find meaning in them. We should be ever vigilant for opportunities to help strangers, but we should also understand that kindness radiates out and touches people in unexpected ways! Listen on iTunes or Listen to/download this episode here: Show outline: I had been in Denver and was traveling back home to Richmond. I knew I had a 3-hour layover in Chicago and had made plans to have dinner with a good friend. My flight out of Denver got delayed, which frustrated me because I was really looking forward to dinner. My flight was delayed even more so I knew I would miss my connection to Richmond It was around 11:30pm when I arrived in Chicago I took a shuttle to the hotel. It was cold, windy night with a mix of snow and sleet that pelted my face as I dashed from the shuttle to the hotel lobby, where the line to check in was almost out the door. Front-desk clerk was being rude to a young woman whose credit card was declined I checked into my room, but couldn't get the thought of the woman out of my mind I returned to the now empty lobby to find her sitting on a bench crying I paid for her room Thinking that was the reason for my changed plans, I slept well until morning. At checkout, the same clerk was there He told me how amazed he was by my generosity Convinced I had helped the girl and that was the reason for my delay, I told him that there are no accidents in life and that God causes our paths to cross with people for a purpose He stared for a moment and said "I will think about what you have said. For a very long time" It was then that I realized it wasn't the girl I had helped the most. It was the clerk. We need to be open-minded about the frustrating changes to our plans Shift your perspective to be looking for a new opportunity We need to be looking for the potential meaning, or what we can learn from and use to grow out of each situation We need to keep our eyes open for opportunities to help people We need to realize that we never help just one person We benefit from generosity ourselves--personal growth Generosity creates a "butterfly effect" that touches lives in ways we can never imagine. LIAM 081 – QCT: Watch Your Language! Active or Passive Voice Reveals Your Mindset Mar 25, 2015
    Show notes

Quick Coaching Tip (QCT): Watch your language! Do you say things like "my pants ripped" or "I wanted to ask you a question" or "my boss made me so angry"? If so, this shows a passive, victim mentality. A better way to say these is "I ripped my pants" or "I want to ask you a question" or "I got so angry today because my boss did..." See the difference. Be in control of your life and let it show through your language. LIAM 080 – Truth Does Not Need Me To Believe It Mar 24, 2015
    Show notes

"The truth doesn't need me to believe it. The truth simply is, and it survives—believe it or not." - Don Miguel Ruiz. This is a profound truth that we all need to understand and adopt into our lives. Truth does not jump up and down and beg "please believe me!" Truth is secure, confident, and needs no external validation. This is the foundation upon which we should all build our lives. Listen as I explore this concept: Listen on iTunes or Listen to/download this episode here: Show Outline: The truth doesn't need me to believe it. The truth simply is, and it survives—believe it or not. Lies need me to believe them. If I don't believe lies, they don't survive my skepticism, and they simply disappear. – Don Miguel Ruiz I think back on the many lies I've told in my life Lies I've told others Lies I've told myself My need for people to believe what I said My need to convince myself to believe what I was telling myself I think of the lies other people have told They had a deep, pleading need to believed Boys, family, friends Core values -- who are you when the facade is stripped away, when nobody is watch, when you aren't trying to impress someone--even yourself Jim Collins said "it is better to know who you are than to know where you are going" When you know your core values and have your foundation firmly rooted in them, that provides emotional security You don't need other people to believe in you or your abilities You don't need to be validated You don't have to do things to get attention, to be noticed, for the purpose of other people telling you how great you are When you live from a sense of truth about who you are, it's like a cruise ship sailing through rough seas Examples: Jesus, Mother Teresa, Gandhi, Nelson Mandela, Martin Luther King Jr., etc. None of these begged to be believed They needed no external validation - their value came from within and their faith in a higher power, bigger plan People, circumstances, threats, death, could not move them off course When I operate from my core values, my purpose, I have peace When I step outside of my purpose, I am not living my truth and I need people, I feel insecure "The lies people tell us do far less damage than the lies we tell ourselves." - Steve Keating @LeadToday It's not the lies of others that need to disappear, it's the personal lies, the lies we tell ourselves about our self-worth and need to be noticed and validated.
