LIAM 049 – Personal Branding: Your Work is a Reflection of Who You Are Jan 07, 2015
    Show notes

Are you a person who does your work, whatever it is, to the best of your ability? Your work is a reflection of who you are and it says more about how you think of yourself than it does the work you are performing. This is another Personal Branding episode in which I stress the importance of seeing yourself as the greatest product or service ever created and taking ownership of the idea that, regardless of who signs your paycheck, you are self-employed. Please listen and share with the social links below! Listen on iTunes or Listen to/download this episode here: Show Outline: "Every job is a self-portrait of the person who did it ... Autograph your work with excellence." -- Vince Lombardi Are you doing your job halfheartedly? Just well enough to get by and satisfy your boss? It doesn't matter who signs your paycheck. You work for yourself. You represent the greatest product or service that was ever created. That brand is YOU! Your success is going to be based on how well you represent yourself to the world. Your work is a reflection of who you are, what's going on inside you, and how you value and respect yourself. Doing things with excellence is not so much about skill, craftsmanship, or outward appearance. It's about what's inside you that you are in love with. It's a reflection of who you are on the inside. It's what flows naturally from within you. If you don't like your job or your boss or a particular project and you do it just enough to get by or not as well as you are capable, that says more about you than it does the boss, job or project. It's about what's going on inside you. Have so much pride, respect, and love for yourself that it shows in and through the work that you do. Our kids do this in school. They may not like the subject or the teacher, so they just do enough to get by, somehow thinking they are pulling something over on the teacher. You may not like your boss, job, or the project you are working on, but why not do the work in a way that reflects the beauty and strength of character that is inside you? If you do substandard work, it reflects poorly on you and it reveals substandard thoughts and feelings you have about yourself and your position in life. The attitude with which you do your work should always be in sync with your life's purpose or core values. The 4th Agreement - Always Do Your Best! LIAM 048 – Clarity: A Conversation with Jamie Smart Jan 04, 2015
    Show notes

I included the book Clarity by Jamie Smart in my list of the most influential books I read in 2014. After you hear this conversation between the two of us, you'll understand, with remarkable clarity, why you must read this book, too! This episode, and his book, will change your life in significant ways. Please listen and share with your friends and family, so they may discover Clarity for themselves. Listen on iTunes or Listen to/download this episode here: Quotes and Thoughts from the show: Jamie dealt with the stress in his life, like so many people, by drinking He realized it was ruining his life, so he stopped After not drinking for several months, he discovered his true problem was a "thinking problem" After discovering Tim Ferriss' book The 4-Hour Work Week, he set off for great adventures thinking that's what was missing from his life. Shortly into his first mini-retirement adventure, he discovered that wasn't it either... Jamie: I was so sure, if I got the circumstances of my life right, then I would feel great, I would love my life After discovering the principles of Clarity, he knew this would be his life's mission Jamie: When we look through the things we thought were real or true, to find life doesn't really work that way, we discover that we have within us all we need to prosper, thrive and take the right steps in our lives. Jamie: If someone perceives themselves as limited, or not enough, or damaged, or broken in some way... the ability to believe that you are broken, or damaged, or not enough, is such an extraordinary creative act that it is proof positive that you are not broken, or damaged, or not enough! The slickest magic trick in the world is the ability we have as human beings is the ability to believe that we are anything less than extraordinary and magnificent! This limiting belief is part of our domestication. A 3-year-old spends most of its day in a place of clarity, peace, and joy. They blip out into furry, or sadness, or devastation, or giggling, or wonder and curiosity. So it's all in there. They just don't get stuck in it. They aren't wasting energy trying to manage state. It's a learning process/conditioning that gets us stuck and believing we are limited and not capable and not enough. Jamie: The game we are all up to in life, as I see it, is we are all looking for who we really are. We are looking for ourselves. We think we are looking for a partner, or achievement, or success, or to be number one, or to get approval or validation, when, all the time, what we are looking for is what we already are and something that we already have. We are looking for that place of peace and clarity that resides inside every human being. And we've been tricked into believing that we are going to find it out there, outside of ourselves. Most of us have a lot on our minds, we are over-thinking our lives and situations. We are stressing and striving. When you trying hardest to solve a problem, you are least likely to solve it. Most of the world's great discoveries, and our personal epiphanies, were discover when we were relaxed, had peace, and were not actively searching for it. Clarity of connection comes when we listen to each other without agenda, without listening for the purpose of giving and answer, and just listening to impacted and inspired by the other person. You mind is designed to give you insight. Your capacity for insight is a natural property of your mind. You can massively benefit from understanding the inside-out nature of life. Goal setting is neutral--not good or bad. A toxic goal is a goal set for the purpose of producing a feeling, by the achievement of the goal, that the goal is not capable of delivering. Money and material possessions have no "feeling transmitters." They have no power to give us feelings that can only be produced by something inside of us. A toxic goal is one that is set in the hopes of creating a feeling that you believe is not ...

LIAM 045 – What You Are Becoming is More Important than What You Are Doing! Dec 29, 2014
    Show notes

What you are becoming is more important than what you are doing. Doing is usually just mechanical. Becoming is personal and spiritual. In this episode, I talk about making changes in our lives to move forward in our personal growth. Change is scary because it creates uncertainty, so I also address some very helpful ways to overcome the paralysis caused by fear. Please listen and share with your friends! Listen on iTunes or Listen to/download this episode here: Show Outline: I want 2015 to be the best year of your life, so far! "How we spend our days is ultimately how we spend our lives." If you want your life to be different in 2015, you are going to have to think and act differently--and change can be a bit scary. If you don't make any changes in your life, you can't expect any changes in your life! I am making some big changes in my life in 2015 I'm dropping a few of the things I used to do for income. I'm adding some new, exciting things to my life, that I'm not quite sure how they will turn out. Fear stops people from trying new things, from making the changes needed to change their lives. Mindset: Be more excited about what could go right, than what could go wrong. Be more excited about what is coming into your life than worried about what will go out of it. I know you're scared, to it scared. I know you're uncertain, do it uncertain. Don't label the feeling as "fear" or "anxiety." Identify the physical symptoms--heart racing, hands shaking, stomach upset. Then ask yourself "can I do this with shaky hands, upset stomach, and heart pounding?" The answer is usually yes. Fear is wetting your pants and just standing there. Courage is taking the next step with wet pants! - @strategiccoach What stops us from taking steps forward is not the physical symptoms, it's the story we are telling ourselves in the present about some outcome we do not want to happen in the future. The problem is the future isn't real. Only the present is real. The past and future only exist as stories we tell ourselves about did or will happen. It takes just as much (and I think, less) energy to project a positive outcome to a situation than it does to think about a negative outcome. The answer is always "no" if you don't ask the question. Be more concerned about what you are BECOMING, than what you are DOING! The "doing" is more fulfilling if you do it with your focus on what you are "becoming" in the process. You are already are "good enough" as a person. You don't need to be "better" If you already know exactly how to reach your goal, it's not a big enough goal! If you know exactly what to do, I'd just call that a task, not a goal. Stop thinking about it and DO something TODAY, no matter how small, to move you closer to realizing your dream! LIAM 043 – The “I’ll Be Happy When” Trap Dec 19, 2014
    Show notes

If you have a goal and are saying to yourself "I'll be happy when I reach this goal," that is a formula for disappointment. The "I'll be happy when" trap snags so many people and leaves them unfulfilled. A true feeling of happiness, satisfaction, fulfillment, success, etc, can only come from within you. It can never be obtained by something from outside of yourself. Listen as I talk about how I fell into that trap, got out, and want you to avoid it, too. Listen on iTunes or Listen to/download this episode here: Show outline: I'm currently reading the book Clarity: Clear Mind, Better Performance, Bigger Results by Jamie Smart! Amazing book! So much of it covers not just topics I've already talked about on this show, but also what I work on with so many people. All things happen for a reason and in perfect timing, so I smiled when I got to chapter 13 "Toxic Goals vs Authentic Desires" I had just finished talking with someone about his goals and how he kept using the phrase "I'll be happy when..." and he named some of his goals. In my show with Jaime Primak Sullivan (#41), we talked about reaching a goal and still feeling unsatisfied. The "I'll be happy when..." trap How secure can a person ever feel when they are believing that their security comes from something outside of them - Jamie Smart Looking forward to feeling successful, loved, appreciated, whatever, by the accomplishment of some goal or relationship is almost always disappointing. Upon reaching, thinking "So that wasn't it either..." and setting a bigger, but similar goal The circumstances of success will not create the experience of success It's good to want things and to have goals and things you want to achieve in your life but you cannot look to those things to validate you as a person or give you happiness. It's good to have goals, but don't let the goals have you! It's good to want things, but simply because you want them, and you'll be ok if you don't get them. I want a certain kind of car some day--it's a goal/desire I will enjoy owning and driving the car The desire for the car doesn't own me and I'm not hoping to feel successful or validated for having reached some social status by owning the car. I just want it. If I never get, that's OK I want to achieve my goals out of a desire to express who I already am and to achieve what I believe I am capable of achieve. I will enjoy the process of working to achieve them, more than I will the final result. Fortune Cookie: Happiness is not an outside job; it's an inside job. Happiness and security can only come from within, not from money, objects or other people It's about having an abundance mindset, rather than a scarcity mindset. Money is good and serves a purpose, but it is just a tool, like a hammer or a toaster Would you ever say "When I have 3 million hammers, I'll be happy" or "When I find the perfect toaster that makes the perfect piece of toast, I'll feel secure." ? Money cannot provide happiness or security, nor can the things money can buy We carry this idea over from childhood, when our blankets or teddy bears made us feel safe & secure Transitional objects: something that gives a child a sense of comfort and security during times of change or uncertainty. We know the blanket/bear can't give the child a feeling of comfort or security, that can only come from within the child--it just seems to the child that the feelings come from the object. Happiness, peace, comfort, security cannot come from the outside in, it must come from the inside out. We feel anxious and insecure when the stock market dips or we are having difficulty in a significant relationship It's because we are looking to these things to create stability and security in our lives These things are important, but can never give us that security. Markets and people are constantly changing When you place your security or,

LIAM 042 – Remove Yourself from the Darkness, Step Into the Light! Dec 17, 2014
    Show notes

Remove yourself from the darkness and step into the light! This is sort of followup to something Jaime Primak Sullivan said in Session 41 about her personal journey. If darkness is winning the battle, it's because the light is not doing its job. Listen as I unfold this topic about being a light to our own lives and to the lives of those around us. Listen on iTunes or Listen to/download this episode here: Show outline: Something Jaime Primak Sullivan said in the last episode was very important! Jaime talked about how being mean and trying to make people feel bad (being a bully) made her feel bad and was exhausting. Being nice, trying to make people feel good made her feel great and gave her energy. It got me thinking about an article I wrote back in March 2014, just before I had my cancer surgery If darkness is winning the battles, my friend, it is because light is not doing its job. — Andy Andrews Darkness existed before there was light. Darkness is absence of visible light. Darkness is also a metaphor for wickedness or evil, or an emotional state of despair or negativity, or a lack of understanding. While the definition may vary, know this: darkness is the prevalent state and light must be used to dispel it. If you walk into a window-less room, like a basement, the room is completely dark If you flip the light switch and nothing happens, what do you get upset about? The darkness? No! You get upset because the light is not doing it's job! The same is true in our lives! Most of the darkness in our lives comes from negative thoughts and limiting beliefs We get stuck in what Zig Ziglar called "stinkin' thinkin'" We think negative thoughts about ourselves and others We must overcome the darkness by shining the light of positive thinking and gratitude Darkness hates light! If there is darkness in your personal life and relationships, you have 2 choices: Take responsibility for the darkness you are creating or perpetuating and begin to create light instead Your attitude and actions can be a great source of light Remove yourself from the darkness and step into the light Sometimes you must remove yourself from negative, toxic people You cannot change others, so sometimes you have to remove yourself from them. This is what Jaime said she had to do: remove herself from the source of pain and toxicity and embrace the light When she removed the external pain, she was able to work on the internal pain This was true in my life: My darkness was not from other people, it was from within myself I chose to change my thoughts about myself and others. Creating light takes much less energy than creating darkness In a dark room, it just takes a single match In a bright room, it takes putting up heavy coverings over the windows and turning off lights and filling in cracks As was true with Jaime, I found I had much more energy and excitement about life once I started creating light for myself instead of darkness, saying loving, kind, words to myself and other, instead of criticism and sarcasm. During the holidays, be a source of light instead of darkness. Wherever possible, remove yourself from dark relationships or shine as much light into them as you can--don't let their darkness dampen your light! Mentioned in this show: LIAM 41 - A Real "Tawk" with "The Jersey Belle" Jaime Primak Sullivan Bruce Van Horn – LifeThought: If darkness is winning the battle, light is not doing its job! LIAM 041 – A Real “Tawk” with “The Jersey Belle” Jaime Primak Sullivan Dec 15, 2014
    Show notes

Jaime Primak Sullivan, is the Creative Producer and Star of Bravo TV's show "Jersey Belle" and host of the Facebook and YouTube sensation, Keurig's "Cawfeetawk." She is one of the most influential forces in the entertainment industry today. Jaime spends almost an hour "tawking" with me about life and lessons learned along the way. Jaime is beautiful, inside and out, and is among the most authentic persons I have ever known. Set aside some time to eavesdrop on our very personal, very real conversation. Listen on iTunes or Listen to/download this episode here: Quotes from Jaime during the show: I've learned that not everybody will get your sense of humor, and that's OK! One of the things I've struggled with my whole life is I compete with everyone around me. I put more work into personal growth than I do into all of my other efforts combined. There's a difference between trying your best and always needing to be the best. I'm exhausted. I want balance. I want it, I crave it, and I just don't have it. I have a "breaking and entering" mentality. Before I knock on the door of opportunity, I already know how I'm getting in the back window, so it doesn't really matter to me what the person who opens the door says. What would happen if I woke up tomorrow and my only responsibility was to be Mom? There are days that I cry myself to sleep because I don't know how I can carry the load any longer. It's not a fear of failure. Maybe it's a fear of the well running dry. People may not remember what you say, but they will always remember the way you made them feel. I decided I wanted to leave people feeling better than before they came to me. Making people feel bad didn't make me feel any better. But making people feel good made me feel outstanding! Cawfeetawk is a takeaway. You take something away from it so you feel better about yourself. We allow our emotions to be controlled by outside influences that truly have nothing to do with us! You have to stop chasing what was, start living in what is, and accept responsibility! The changes I made in my life were because I was profoundly unhappy with who I was. Once you eliminate the outside pain, you start working on the inside pain. If you can't make someone's day better, just don't make it worse. There is nothing scarier than presenting your most authentic self to the world and knowing that there is no place to hide.
