    028. "I don't have a fatty liver any more!" - Mario Jul 25, 2021
    Show notes

In this episode, Mario tells me about how he grew up in Québec, Canada. At home, his parents naturally ate what would now be considered a keto way of eating: low in carbs and starches, no snacks, plenty of meat.
When he got together with his then-girlfriend, he started eating a "normal" diet like she'd grown up with. Despite his active lifestyle and "healthy" diet, he kept gaining weight.
When he started getting back pain, he went to see the doctor. X-rays showed nothing, even though his pain kept getting worse.
It turned out to be his liver: all the fructose he was eating had given him a fatty liver.
So he started educating himself, about sugar, about science, and about low carb/keto fasting.
And it transformed his health and his life!

    027. "I tried to be healthy in ways that were unhealthy": Meghan Jul 18, 2021
    Show notes

Meghan had always been interested in health, but she didn't know that all those "healthy" products like shakes and bars actually contain a lot of hidden sugars.
She ran marathons, but she also suffered from allergies, bloating, breathing troubles, and many other health issues.
Then she started to experiment: organic sugar, fat-free, diets, food combining.
But everybody's body is bio-individual, and even though she was being health-conscious, she felt terrible.
She eliminated certain foods from her diet, like dairy. But especially, she took out sugar and starches. She got grumpy and emotional during her withdrawal, but she continued because she saw what was shifting for her body, her mind, and her emotions... for the better.
She also learned about sprouting, fermenting, as well as probiotics and prebiotic foods. And the importance of the microbiome (gut health).
Her goal was to feel better, not to lose weight. And now she feels fantastic! Her advice as a health coach is simple: look after your gut health, eat real whole foods and drink plenty of water.

    026. Is sugar addictive? Jul 11, 2021
    Show notes

In this solo episode, I talk about different points of view on whether sugar is an addictive substance. I have my opinion, but what do other sources say about the addictive nature of sugar?
In my opinion, it's not the plant itself that's the problem. It's what's been done to it: the refining and processing and concentrating of the original plant to make its essence into a potent powder, sugar and flour alike.
Scientific studies have shown that rats and mice choose sugar over cocaine. Do we humans really behave the same as lab rats?
And what about people who have an "addictive personality"? Is that really a thing?
It's no secret that all those hyper-palatable processed foods make us want more and more - they affect our taste and our brain so fast that they can literally hook us. How? Listen to the episode!
I also talk about cravings, leptin resistance, and how sugar and flour affect the dopamine receptors in the brain and hijack impulse control.
So why isn't sugar recognized yet by the DSM-5 as an addictive substance, whereas caffeine is?
And what happens when you don't eat sugar and flour? How does our behaviour and our relationship with our food and with ourselves change? I've lived it for the last 6 years: it's a wonderful sense of peace and freedom.

    024. "My body craves more fasting hours": Laurie Jun 27, 2021
    Show notes

Laurie Lewis is a certified health and intermittent fasting coach. She uses the fasting principles of Gin Stephens, Dr. Jason Fung, and Dr. Bert Herring.

We chat about her childhood in the 70s, her mom's attitude to diets, and her love for diet soda at college. All through her 20s, Laurie says, she felt like she was in a fog. She just didn't feel good... and she listened to her intuition. And stopped. She wasn't aware of how foods and drinks made her feel at the time, but then in her mid-thirties she started loving fresh veggies, not sweet flavours. She developed a taste for bitter flavours.
She also learned to love feeling vibrant and energetic and healthy!
Now she knows what's happening in her body when she eats sugar, and she can help her clients become more aware too.
Laurie specializes in intermittent fasting and appetite correction. We talk about changing your habits, and the peace and freedom of the intermittent fasting lifestyle.

    023. Father's Day: 3 dads (including mine!) talk about sugar Jun 20, 2021
    Show notes

A special Father's Day edition in the company of UK Low Carb's Dan Greef, Jeff Gerken (from Episode 16)... and my dad, Alan Gorman!
Dan talks about the impact that eating low carb has had on him as a father, and on his whole family. He wants his young children to be free free to make choices and to be informed to know what works for them. Both his children have nut allergies, so in a way, that makes cutting sugary foods easier. Dan's wife changed her diet when she had gestational diabetes when she was pregnant with their first child. He decided to start eating low carb too. Now they are much more aware about the importance of being role models and giving real, whole foods to their two children, for their healthy bodies, brains, and development.
Jeff talks about his own father and father-in-law, and how he perceived them as old fat men! He never made the connection how his formerly slim cross-country running father became overweight in middle age. Jeff himself was active and sporty, and kept his weight down that way. But then when an injury stopped him from playing sports, he couldn't even keep up with his much older father-in-law. Diets left him feeling hungry and with no energy. He thought weight gain and health issues were inevitable as you get older. As a father, he limits his own son's consumption of soda because it used to be his downfall, and his family is what inspired him to change his diet and his goals.
And my third guest is my lovely dad, Alan Gorman. Because he's been in contact with me going on about... er, educating people about sugar, he's made some adjustments in his own diet. For example, he cut down on orange juice. He also learned more about how carbohydrates and sugar affect the body. In this recording during his visit to Montreal in 2018, we talk about how modern processed foods may have "hijacked" our intuition. We also talk about how food companies engineer food products to make them hyper-palatable. Unlike real, whole foods that his parents and grandparents used to eat, these types of processed products are developed in a lab to have a "bliss point" that makes people want more... and buy more!

    022. "My cystic acne is gone!" Katherine Jun 13, 2021
    Show notes

Katherine Larsen had cystic acne, which had a negative impact on her career and social life. Her moods were up and down, and she was easily triggered by even small things. She would also have an energy slump in the middle of the afternoon, as well as cravings for sugary and starchy foods.
In her mid-twenties, she realized it might be linked to sugar, so she tried an elimination diet.
She tried several whole food approaches: Whole 30, vegetarian, paleo...
But what they all have in common is that they don't include processed foods and especially sugar! Her pain got better, her acne got better, her mood stabilized, her stomach aches and headaches disappeared... She had so much energy too! She wasn't falling asleep on the couch at 9pm any more!
This is her way of eating now, it's not a diet. She has a calmer, healthier relationship with food now.
And as a bonus, she figured out that cutting out foods that contain corn syrup, refined sugars and gluten helped get rid of her cystic acne. She didn't want to take meds, so she researched a lot on her own, with tons of trial and error.
Now she treats her body and skin with love and caring. She doesn't get acne breakouts any more. And she has an original way to cleanse her face! Listen to find out how.
Katherine's book is called You Can't Hide Your Face: A Natural Guide to Healing Acne and Loving Your Skin. Contact her here: https://www.katherinejlarsen.com/

    021. Treat = sweet? My take on sugar and sweeteners Jun 06, 2021
    Show notes

Have you ever questioned your definition of "treat"? I never had. For the first 45 years of my life, there was a universal truth that treat = sweet.
But then when I stopped eating sugar and sweeteners, I realized that my definition of "treat" was changing. With sugar and sweet foods out of the picture, I had the head space to think about my need for treats and whether they had to be sweet at all (or even edible!).
In this episode, I share my own personal process of questioning what was behind my need for sweet treats. I also talk about sweeteners and whether they're any "better" than sugar. We touch on gut health too.
Imagine if you didn't need sweetness as a treat any more... How would you feel? What would you eat or do? How would you find the sweetness in life?
That's what this episode is all about.

    019. - "The hardest thing for me was cutting out snacking": Keith May 23, 2021
    Show notes

When Keith McDonald started to experience a lot of bloating and pain in his stomach, he went to the doctor who told him that he had non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and that there was nothing to be done.

But then things got worse and the doctors did a scan and told him they would have to remove his spleen. He refused.
Instead, he researched his symptoms and linked them to gluten. So he cut out gluten and after two weeks, his symptoms disappeared.
Now he knows he's celiac, so he eats accordingly: no wheat, barley, rye, corn, and even some brands of spices because he is super sensitive to gluten.
Cutting out gluten helped his joint pain go away, and he did lose some weight, but what really transformed his health was intermittent fasting. The hardest thing for him was cutting out snacking, but then he felt the benefits of eating better and less often (not less!).
And his weight went down and settled at a healthy level.
His message for us consumers and patients: You have to be your own advocate.
