048: Special holiday edition: Happy Gut, Happy Holidays! Dec 12, 2021
    Show notes

This is our special holiday edition of the Life After Sugar podcast!
This week I'm talking to Holly Howe, a Fermentation Educator, a cookbook author, photographer, and blogger. Holly's goal is to have sauerkraut fermenting in 100,000 homes... including yours!
If you're anything like I was a few years ago, you may not know much about fermented foods. Maybe you know that yogurt is fermented? Or maybe you've tasted kombucha? That's fermented too. Or sauerkraut? These are all fermented (or cultured) foods and drinks, and are therefore probiotic and good for your gut health.
In this episode, Holly shares her story and gives her recipe for fermented cranberry relish and carrot sticks. Plus I give my recipe for a happy sugar free holiday season!
And in future episodes, Holly and I will continue to demystify the world of fermentation.
Why is gut health so important? And what does sugar have to do with gut health? Listen to find out!
Here's Holly's recipes for yummy fermented cranberry relish and carrot sticks: https://www.makesauerkraut.com/lifeaftersugar/

    047. "Low carb and fasting were real game-changers": Jackie and Louise Dec 05, 2021
    Show notes

Jackie Fletcher and Louise Reynolds are the hosts of the Fabulously Keto podcast.
After starting on her low carb eating journey in May 2017 and then moving to a ketogenic way of eating in January 2018, Jackie discovered a passion for everything low carb and keto.
Jackie tells about her childhood, when she always felt left out and overweight. She tried yo-yo dieting, but she couldn't sustain it.

Eventually, in her 40s, she was at her heaviest, she felt like a failure, but she didn't even go to the doctor's because she had no intention of changing what she was eating. Then she listened to the audio version of Gary Taube's book "Why We Get Fat and What To Do About It".

And it had a huge impact on her, because that's when she started to understand low carb eating. She changed her diet, adopted keto, then added intermittent fasting. Now she doesn't feel like she's on a diet, even though she's aware that she needs to be mindful of how she relates to her "head hunger", which is really just an emotional want of food, and not real hunger. Her current mantra is "Food does not control me...".
Since late 2015, Louise has used low carb ketogenic way of living to address a number of health issues.
Louise talks about how she used to live with her emotional eating habits and stress in her life. Her tipping point came when she consulted a colleague who was knowledgeable about eating disorders. She'd tried all kinds of diets, and then decided to have weight loss surgery. After a severe motorcycle accident, her mom - who'd discovered low carb - suggested Louise change what she was eating in order to help with her pain and inflammation. It was the science that made sense to Louise. And indeed, she tried a low carb/keto diet, and never looked back.

    046. The food addict behind the white coat: Dr. Vera Tarman Nov 28, 2021
    Show notes

Dr. Vera Tarman is the author of the book Food Junkies: Recovery from Food Addiction.
Her book (as well as the podcast Food Junkies) tackles the complex and often poorly understood issue of food addiction. It's so poignant because it's written from her own clinical experience with dozens of her patients who suffer from overeating, binge eating, obesity, anorexia, and bulimia.
But Vera is also the person behind the white coat. In this episode, she tells her own touching personal story about her addiction to food, especially to sugar and flour. She talks about how it began and developed, and how she found peace from that "hornet's nest" of self-destructive addictive tendencies.
Hers is a journey of discovery and self-acceptance, as a patient as much as a doctor.
For people struggling with food addictions, finding health professionals who understand and recognize their condition remains a frustrating battle, even today. Thanks to her book, podcast and Facebook group, Dr. Vera Tarman continues to lead the way in research as well as giving practical strategies for people facing the complicated challenges of eating disorders and addictions.

045: "Consuming sugar can be a form of self-sabotage": Colli Nov 21, 2021
    Show notes

Colli Christante grew up eating whole foods and very little sugar, and she brought up her daughter that way too. She doesn't remember her daughter being sick as a child.
Naturally, as she grew up, Colli's daughter experimented with sugar and other types of processed foods, but then when she herself became a mother, she reverted back to whole foods.
Colli tells about her experience with alcoholism, first with her father and then with her ex-husband. Their consumption of alcohol affected their mood and behaviour... causing suffering for herself and her family. The thing is, alcohol affects the body in a similar way to sugar.
Colli's field of expertise is as a family trauma therapist. From her practice and her personal experience, she knows all about trauma and self-sabotage.
In this episode, we talk about the connection between trauma and emotional eating, and how consuming sugar and alcohol can be a form of self-sabotage. We also talk about how to deal with reaching out for sugary foods or alcohol as a coping mechanism, and how to create a "new normal".

    044. "My comfort food has changed completely": Nikola Nov 14, 2021
    Show notes

When Nikola Howard was still eating sugar, she had no energy, she was in pain, she had skin issues, and she was often moody and "hangry" (which is when you're so hungry that you're angry). She had to eat every two hours or so, otherwise she would become impatient and bad-tempered.
It wasn't until she was in her 40s that she realized how sugar was affecting her brain and her whole life and relationships.
Like many of us, she had spend her teens and her twenties following low fat diets. But she wasn't eating enough, plus she depended on fruit for sweetness, and she was hungry all the time.
In the early 90s, she read a book by Dr. Atkins, and logically, it made sense to her. She then started researching about the history and science of nutrition, and all its methodological constraints.
In this episode, Nikola tells about how she used to consume lots of ice cream and potatoes as a self-medication to soothe and calm herself in times of stress. She didn't know how else to cope. When her suffering and pain became too great, she decided to change. And even her comfort foods have changed!
Now she has the resiliency and the personal power to ask better questions, and to analyze what was really going on in her life. This led her to become a qualified coach in 2016.
Not eating sugar has made her into a more patient and compassionate person. She now helps others to ask better questions too, and teaches them to feed their body and mind more effectively by using her H.O.P.E. protocol. She explains it in this episode.

    043. "I feel free when I don't eat sugar and when I fast": Janine Nov 07, 2021
    Show notes

Janine knew all the facts about sugar: what it does to your health, how it can feed cancer and cause inflammation... but she still ate it because she liked the taste, and it made her happy to eat it.
When she'd tried other diets, like keto, she realized that the fake sugars and the recreations of desserts that she was making were just causing her to miss the "real thing".
And when she stopped trying to replace sugar, she found that real food just tastes better. Although she might sometimes crave processed foods like pizza and nachos, she doesn't necessarily act on her craving. She can usually wait for 15 minutes, or go for a walk, and the craving passes. Not always, but most times.
    She's working on her mindfulness.
"A craving is not a life-or-death situation", she reminds herself.
Another habit that helps her in her daily life is practising intermittent fasting. In this episode, we talk about fasting, and about being fat adapted (and what that means), and how both of these keep Janine's cravings to a minimum.

    042. "As a dietitian, I realized that my advice was hurting people": Michelle Oct 31, 2021
    Show notes

Michelle Hurn is the author of the book "The Dietitian's Dilemma".
As a health professional, the oath she took was to "do no harm". And yet, after several years in the profession, and after several challenges with her own health, she realized that as a dietitian, she was actually hurting people more than helping them.
That was her dilemma: Do I continue to repeat the official guidelines that include having diabetic patients consume up to 75g of carbs per meal, or do I step out of that well-paid profession because it goes against my own values?
She decided to quit her job as a dietitian, and in this episode and in her book, Michelle explains why. She also tells her touching journey as a teen with an eating disorder.
In her book (which I loved!), she speaks about 5 main issues that can be improved with a change in diet (especially cutting out refined carbohydrates like sugar):

    1. diabetes
    2. mental disorders
    3. eating disorders
    4. sarcopenia (muscle loss)
    5. heart disease

Michelle agrees that as patients and consumers, our power comes from being our own advocates and doing our own research.
I think she's so inspiring because she was brave enough to step out of her professional and personal paradigm.

    041. "I used sugar to calm my anxiety": Jennifer Oct 24, 2021
    Show notes

Like many of us, Jennifer's sugar story goes way back.
Her health-conscious mom had the family try all kinds of diets, and her dad and her grandparents had a huge sweet tooth. And this solidified Jennifer's sweet tooth.
She experimented with different ways of eating and various diets in order to control her weight and her health. And now she works as a coach to help people eat healthier.
During Covid, she realized that she and her husband were having a dessert after every meal. It was due to the anxiety they were living during this time. It's a pattern that she recognizes in herself: she uses food and alcohol as a way to numb, soothe, check out, and calm her anxiety.
In this episode, Jennifer talks about how her awareness and mindfulness has helped her to change her habits and her relationship with alcohol, food, and especially sugar.

    040. "When I stopped eating sugar, my sleep got better": Denice Oct 17, 2021
    Show notes

Denice Whiteley always had a problem with sleep. She'd fall asleep, but then she'd always wake up during the night and not be able to fall back asleep. She also had two young kids at the time.
She stopped eating sugar because she was having yeast infections, but then she noticed that she also began to sleep through the night. That was over 25 years ago.
Since then, she's only had sugar on rare occasions, and she can feel the difference right away. She bounces off the walls, her anxiety increases, she gets a sugar high and then a crash. In the same way, cutting alcohol, dairy, and gluten also made a huge difference for Denice.
She had to figure out what would make her feel better without having to take a bunch of meds. She's developed ways to live happily with less sugar, and not feel restricted. How?
Listen as Denice shares her tips in this episode.

    039. "I used emotional eating to avoid my feelings": Lynn Louise Oct 10, 2021
    Show notes

Lynn Louise knows all about emotional eating. In fact, she did all kinds of activities in order to distract herself from her feelings:

    • drugs
    • drinking
    • running
    • eating

She freely admits that she had lots of distractive habits. The trigger was a traumatic experience that she had when she was a teenager, but she didn't know that at the time.
She first drank alcohol socially, but it soon turned to drinking for comfort. Then came emotional eating.
Lynn Louise tried therapy, but she always went back to her habits that gave her comfort.
She was in her late 40s when she became aware that she was doing those distracting behaviours and habits for the "wrong" reasons. She says that she would run or eat in order to avoid feeling her feelings.
From the outside, she had it all. Everything was great. But she was trying to find external solutions to internal problems. She felt overwhelmed, depressed, alone... like an imposter in her own life.
Listen to Lynn Louise's candid and inspiring story of how she overcame that cycle of compulsive behaviours and how she helps other women get unstuck too.
