JFD538: Dark Night of the Scarecrow, The Devil, Luz Oct 15, 2020
Show notes Schlocktober rolls right along the week on JFD as we honor the ghost of Dom DeLuise by handing our picks over to our $10-a-month Patreon donors and they deliver us some tricks and some treats!
Up first, we check out a Halloween made-for-TV movie that has lived on thanks to its rabid fan base, Dark Night of the Scarecrow from 1981, in which a mentally challenged man (Larry Drake) is murdered my an angry lynch mob when they mistakenly think he has harmed a local girl. However, after his death each member of the mob is haunted by a mysterious scarecrow and begin meeting untimely demises themselves.
Then, also from 1981 we check out a Taiwanese/Hong Kong supernatural thriller about a witch who can turn her victims into oozing sacks of worms and snakes if they don't play their cards right in The Devil.
Finally, we examine an atmospheric independent German film about a woman who may be possessed by a demon in Luz from 2018.
All this plus why Parker isn't feeling too Halloweeny this year, Goblin Talk, classic monster movies, Junk Mail, Van Halen tributes, Price is Right News, blu-rays to play at your Halloween party and so much more.

JFD537: Encounters of the Spooky Kind, The Eternal Evil of Asia, Pulse Oct 08, 2020
Show notes Ever feel like ya wanna escape the walking hellscape we currently inhabit in modern times in the western world, but it's still Schlocktober and ya gotta get Halloween-y? Good news, beleaguered Junk Food Junkies! You can take a trip with us to a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away: East Asia, circa 1980 through 2001! It's our SPOOKY ASIA theme show!
First up, we follow up the fun we had way back when with Mr. Vampire (1985) by digging even deeper into the Chinese Hopping Vampire well by watching the trend-setting early Hong Kong horror/comedy, Encounters of the Spooky Kind (aka Spooky Encounters), from 1980! Everybody's favorite, fattest dragon, Sammo Hung wages war against hopping vampires and marital infidelities in this prototypical Jiangshi flick, but what's the the situation with the optically printed special effects? Are they plentiful?
Next up! Y'all remember taking vacations, and what that was like? Well, hopefully none of your vacations involved getting on the bad side of an evil wizard from Thailand, or else your life might resemble the plot of The Eternal Evil of Asia, from 1995! Your first indication might be that your head has turned into a penis, as is common with these sort of enchantments. However, will ONE of your charming hosts decide this film is TOO PROBLEMATIC for 2020?! Maybe/sorta. It was a different time/continent.
Finally! It's a third movie! But is it a half-Freado?! Just exactly how much spookiness and how much Asia is there to be seen in the well-regarded J-Horror flick from way back 'round the turn of the century, if most of it is just people talking about the internet or looking at muddy pixels? Will one of us call this movie 'Lynchian?' All these questions answered and more, this week only, in our exclusive and 100% free-to-donloyd review of Pulse (aka Kairo, from 2001)!
All this plus suntory whiskey, the first cinematic universe in cinema history, is moleman a pejorative?, 遇见甲虫, the profundity of mashed potatoes, disneymongering, alien parties versus familytime, the last cinematic year in cinematic history?, topsy turvy top ten tabulation, wizard sleeves a-gogo, overlong international excursions into the general area of musicality, do they even shoot pictures anymore?, all of the promised Garfield/CAT-III jokes landed on the cutting room floor, safety tips from the scary police, 'wow', the time Sammo Hung fought David Arquette in Parker Bowman's living room in the future, some special Halloween sacks and scraps of cloth, our weekly news plus blu-ray picks and even more!

JFD536: The Unnamable, Quatermass and the Pit, The Curse Oct 02, 2020
    Show notes
We're joined by Zach from Are You Morbid? to discuss all things Lovecraft this week!

First up, preppy college kids from Miskatonic explore a spooky house that may be the home of something indescribably scary in "The Unnamable."

Next, subway workers unearth a strange burial site that may be early humans or maybe aliens in "Quatermass and the Pit."

Finally, Wil Wheaton's farm gets hit by a meteor that unleashes very little color, but it does make a lot of bugs appear in "The Curse."

All this plus drive-in chat, extreme lovecraft deep dives, wishes coming true, feral cat chat, nerd news, dvds, junk mails and so much more.

JFD535: The Werewolf, The Legend of the Wolf Woman, The Runestone Sep 24, 2020
Show notes As we continue our countdown to Halloween, we let the fur fly with an episode dedicated to those cursed souls, the werewolves and we take a look at three very different wolf-themed flicks!
Up first, infamous b-movie schlockmeister Sam Katzman attempts to revamp the werewolf movie for the 1950's drive-in audience with The Werewolf from 1956, about a man injected with a radioactive serum that turns him into a wolf man wreaking havoc on Big Bear, CA.
Next, we switch gears with an Italian tale of lycanthropy, this time concerning a woman who turns into a beast any time she is confronted with sexuality as result of being raped in The Legend of the Wolf Woman (AKA Werewolf Woman) from 1976.
And finally, a group of character actors (Peter Riegert, William Hickey, Lawrence Tierney, Chris Young, Alexander Godunov) all get together to figure out how a Norse beast demon got to New York City and how to stop it in The Runestone from 1991.
All this plus old people singing "Dragula", Parker's thoughts on The Babysitter 2, Nerd News, The Oscars being The Oscars, this week's blu-ray releases and so much more!

JFD534: Witch's Night Out, Cannibal Flesh Riot, This House Has People in It Sep 16, 2020
Show notes What's even spookier than your favorite podcast reviewing three Halloween-y short films to celebrate two months of Schlocktober? Well, what if we told you one of them might be a 'Freado Pick'?! The only way to be sure (and to be safe), is to #DonloydNow and listen in!
First up, take a trip down memory lane, if you happen to be a Halloween-obsessed Canadian grampa, with 1978's Witch's Night Out. This bizarrely-animated holiday TV special concerns some trick or treaters from the Great White North with subpar costuming choices and a flair for monochrome biology. Starring the vocal talents of Gilda Radner and Catherine O'Hara! Watch the whole thing here, for free!
Next up! Y'all got any psychobilly friends? They might've already hipped you to 2007's Cannibal Flesh Riot, a low-budget backyardish production from visual artist Gris Grimly in which he gets to pay loving homage to the classic cinematic achievements of the early Universal Horror pioneers, and also tentacle rape. Watch a short clip here, also for free!
Finally! It's a third short, although it's one of those shorts that has inspired several multiple-hours-long thesis statement videos, deconstructing it frame by frame, as all good cinema is intended to be experienced. We're talking about, of course, This House Has People In It (2016), from the hot 'n spicy young director Alan Resnick. Watch all them people in that house right here, also for free!
All this plus to live and die in california, do kids still hackey their sacks?, Kevin Moss is nothing if not a sucker for theming, Frankensteins at Lowe's, two million disc lovers can't be wrong, Parker's Perfect Postman, pose me up Scotty, Halloween safety bags, Tremors is hardly hard sci-fi, showtime faces, Slash Fact or Slash Fiction?, Kevin gets stuck in the floor, our weekly news plus blu-ray picks and even more!

JFD533: Satan's Blade, Evil Dead Trap, The Resurrected Sep 11, 2020
    Show notes

Schlocktober has come early this year, Junkies! We try to forget all about COVID, wildfires and the world's ills by binging 3 movies picked by our friends on Patreon.

First, vacationing snow bunnies are stalked by a madman in the early '80s proto-slasher, Satan's Blade.

Next, journalists look for a scummy snuff film's origins in "Evil Dead Trap."

Finally, a boring detective investigates the strange case of Charles Dexter Ward in "The Resurrected."

All this plus Nerd News, anti-Star Trek rants, pro Dr. Who rants, fire side chats, DVDs, the best movies of the 80s and so much more!

JFD532: Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, Star Trek III: The Search for Spock, Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home Sep 04, 2020
Show notes The listeners demanded it, so here we boldly go where no podcast has gone before, into The Summer of Spock! To celebrate the festivities, we beam up director Jackson Stewart (Beyond the Gates) to discuss the 3 most (in)famous Star Trek flicks!Up first, in Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan from 1982, Captain Kirk (William Shatner) has to face off against an old foe (Ricardo Montalban) but pays the ultimate price when Dr. Spock (Leonard Nimoy) parishes in the battle.
Then, as it turns out maybe Spock isn't dead after all. Maybe he has regenerated as a rapidly aging boy on a distant planet. Maybe if Captain Kirk and crew can steal a ship and find him and get him to Vulcan he can live again. That is, if a group of Klingons (lead by Christopher Lloyd) don't show up and fuck things up in Star Trek III: The Search for Spock from 1984.
And finally, the crew of the Starship Enterprise has to travel back to the late 20th century to steal some humpback whales that can communicate with an alien probe that's threatening to blow up Earth in Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home from 1986. Yes, this is the one where Spock does the Vulcan nerve pinch on the punk rocker on the bus.
All this plus our history with The Trek, tales from the drive-in, Wilford Brimley's secret history, sad Nerd News, this week's blu-ray releases and so much more!

JFD531: Austin Stories, The United Monster Talent Agency, Borrowed Time Aug 28, 2020
Show notes Slap on your swim trunks, grab your favorite gum, and get ready to celebrate Summah with Howard Kremer and your Junk Food Dinner pals! We're talking Austin Stories and more with Dragon Boy Suede himself, and then we'll review a couple short films, too!

First up, it's the aforementioned Austin Stories, from 1997! Three young comics (Howard Kremer, Chip Pope, and Laura House) wrote and starred in this Texas-set take on Seinfeld meets Slacker, which aired twelve episodes on MTV. Howard chats with us about making the show, playing Asteroids with Richard Linklater, and the prospect of performing stand-up for cars instead of people. It's a wild one! If you like what you hear, buy the show on DVD here!
Next up! Sure, you love seeing monsters on screen, but have you ever tried to cast one? If so, you've probably called The United Monster Talent Agency, the premiere source for your monster casting needs (and also the name of a short film, directed by famed special effects creator Greg Nicotero, that we reviewed on the show). It's real short and real fun, and it's got those classic Universal monsters, so why not check it out here?
Finally! It's an Oscar-nominated, heart-wrenchingly emotional Pixar short about old-timey, old-westy cowboys. It's the one with the blammo. Borrowed Time (2015) is guaranteed to get your eyeballs damp, and guaranteed to be reviewed on this episode of the show. Watch along here, it's only seven minutes!
All this plus to live and die in visalia, burning for kevin, hatin' on drive-in posers, parker in seventy mil, sean's operatic regrets, parker makes a classic lucio fulci joke, kevin's safety concerns, sean's crankin' bonnie rait again, you talkin' fandome to me?, who is the fakest looking batman of all the batmen?, our weekly news plus blu-ray picks and even more!
