Episode 037 - The British Stand-Up Coming: A Conversation with Ashley Blaker May 28, 2018
    Show notes

    ABOUT THIS EPISODE

Ashley Blaker grew up in a traditional Jewish home in the London suburbs, attending a private school and eventually Oxford and Cambridge as well. Along the way, he stoked his interest in writing and performing comedy, ultimately earning his big break at the BBC, where he worked alongside some of the most eminent comedians in the country.

Ashley later came out from "behind the camera" to develop his own performances, built largely around observational humor of the Jewish community. Dressed as he is in traditional Jewish garb, his unique style and self-deprecating manner disarms and delights audiences from across the Jewish and even non-Jewish spectrum.

As of the original recording date, Ashley is embarking on his most ambitious project to date: a 5-week run directly off-Broadway, in the heart of the entertainment district. For tickets visit Ticketmaster or call the box office directly at (212) 921-7862. And of course, you can find his material on YouTube, Facebook and elsewhere online.

    Show notes

    ABOUT THIS EPISODE

The son of an Ivy League professor with an early penchant for Wall Street investing, Greg Zuckerman never imagined he would one day be writing about stocks and not trading them. But through a circuitous series of personal events - including stints planning banking conferences, organizing college campus tours and writing for an obscure financial trade journal - he eventually found his unique calling.

Zuckerman has spent a career breaking stories, profiling colorful characters - including Donald Trump and Bernie Madoff - and demanding integrity in a beleaguered industry. He has also published fascinating books, together with his teenage son, focused on today's greatest athletes and the adversity they have conquered on their roads to achievement.

Enjoy this week's conversation with a passionate and accomplished journalist at the world's financial paper of record.

Episode 035 - The Pioneering Israeli Newswoman: A Conversation with Sivan Rahav-Meir May 07, 2018
    Show notes

    ABOUT THIS EPISODE

Sivan Rahav-Meir is a true anomaly in Israeli society: a popular TV news anchor, commentator and columnist, but also a fully and publicly observant Jewish woman. Growing up in the upscale Tel Aviv suburb of Herzaliya, Sivan had a penchant for interviewing others from the age of six, beginning with her classmates and teachers, and eventually branching out to broader society.

She became a "child star," appearing on youth programs, interviewing prime ministers and celebrities, and already worked professionally in the field while still a teenager. Around that time, she also discovered a passion for her Jewish roots, which until then had remain unexplored.

As she matured in both her faith and her career, Sivan eventually came to see her calling in the changing world of "new media" as synthesizing these twin passions, and she began teaching and speaking on these topics. Quickly, her daily Torah posts - since compiled in to a book named #Parsha - went viral, and her weekly Jerusalem Parsha (Torah Portion) class attracted over 700 live participants, with many more followers online.

Along the way, Sivan has pioneered a new model of public discourse about Judaism, and "mainstreamed" many topics previously not addressed in some corners of Israeli society. While maintaining her role as a popular news reporter and writer, today Sivan speaks around the country and around the world, sharing an infectious message of unity and optimism, anchored to a timeless Jewish harbor.

Born and raised in Boston, MA, a hockey goalie growing up and through his university days at MIT, AJ was always a gifted athlete. But not until a chance encounter with his high school alumni director and a confluence of exceptional events did he determine he could change the perception of and landscape for Jewish athletes.

In this hour-long conversation, we discover what it takes to learn an entirely new sport, from scratch, and in a matter of several years to rise to its highest echelons of competition, earning respect and representing Israel valiantly along the way.

Episode 029 - The Nobel Critic: A Conversation with Brian Keating Mar 20, 2018
    Show notes

    ABOUT THIS EPISODE

The Nobel Prize is regarded as the pinnacle of scientific achievement in almost any discipline. Unless you are Brian Keating, a brilliant astro-physicist who nearly won the Prize, and now stands as one of its fiercest critics, advocating for reform.

Brian Keating, a professor at UCSD, began his astronomical career as a 12-year-old "principal investigator" - gazing into space through his $80, Sears-purchased telescope, funded by a generous grant from the "M-O-M Foundation." From there, he blossomed into one of the generation's most acclaimed cosmologists, crafting complex experiments at the South Pole and nearly solving one of the most contested questions in the origin-of-the-universe debate.

An Alter Boy in his youth, then affirmed atheist for many years, Keating later became a committed Jew with great respect for religion generally.

His book, Losing the Nobel Prize, chronicles his story and transformation, while also sharing his critique of what the Prize has become and what it's doing to science and to young scientists.

Losing the Nobel Prize will be available beginning in April 2018 at the books home site - http://amzn.to/2sa5UpA - as well as at Amazon.com or wherever fine books are sold.
