Episode 046 - The Shalva Founder: A Conversation with Kalman Samuels Aug 27, 2018
    Show notes

    ABOUT THIS EPISODE

As an innocent Jewish youth in Vancouver, Canada, and later as a rabbinical student and aspiring scribe in Israel, Kalman Samuels could never have imagined the life-changing events that awaited him. When he and wife Malkie welcomed their second child, Yossi, to the world forty-one years ago, they looked forward to a bright and normal future; but after a tainted batch of vaccine rendered Yossi totally blind and deaf, they entered an unprecedented chapter as a family.

As an eight year old boy in a school for deaf children, Yossi encountered a dedicated teacher who helped him - for the first time - learn to "read" symbols in his palm, opening him to the world of communication. Soon afterwards he learned to communicate synthetically, and at that moment Kalman's wife Malkie committed to dedicate their lives to alleviating the isolation and anguish that other special needs families experienced.

The couple first launched a modest after-school program, which grew into an impressive Jerusalem center with a variety of programs for special children and their families. After years laboring in this field, they catapulted their venture - Shalva, which literally means "serenity" - to an entirely new sphere, constructing a 220,000 square-foot, $63 million world-class structure dedicated to servicing every conceivable need of the special needs population, as well as to bringing the notions of inclusion - and reverse inclusion - to levels unforseen prior.

Today Shalva is a global leader, a destination for children and families from all over the country, and a resounding testament to the fortitude of one special young man, and his remarkably driven parents.

Episode 045 - The Entebbe Hero & Aleh Negev Chairman: A Conversation with Doron Almog Aug 20, 2018
    Show notes

    ABOUT THIS EPISODE

Doron Almog hunted the Munich Olympic terrorists, was the first soldier to land in the raid on Entebbe, and ultimately rose to head the Southern Command in the Israel Defense Forces. But nothing in his storied military career could prepare him for the birth of his severely impaired son, Eron, in 1984.

After mourning the loss of what he had always expected and hoped for, Almog eventually shifted gears, and began researching options to treat and care for his child. He discovered a culture ensnared in shame, and a population terribly under-serviced. Thus began a 30-year journey to improve the lives of children and adults with severe disabilities.

He could sense his son - who never uttered a word in his life - crying out to him: "Abba (father), you freed the hostages in Entebbe, but they were held only for one week; I have been a hostage every day of my life!" With that impetus, he built an incredible residential village in the Negev - part of the Aleh network - and forever transformed not only the care of, but the attitude towards, Israeli society's most disadvantaged members.

For this and more he was awarded the Israel Prize, the state's highest honor, in 2016. Hear and learn from this amazing military and social warrior.

Episode 043 - The Matan Kids Founder: A Conversation with Meredith Polsky Jul 23, 2018
    Show notes

    ABOUT THIS EPISODE

As a young girl growing up in Rockland County, NY, and as a student at the University of Michigan, Meredith (Englander) Polsky never imagined she would one day be running a national organization advocating for and training about children with disabilities. But after a chance encounter with one special child on the first day of Camp Ramah one summer, she had a "light-bulb moment" that catalyzed a dream and a journey.

Today, Matan runs an incredible array of training programs for Jewish educators across the spectrum, helping ensure that every Jewish child finds a place in the Jewish classroom and an approach to Jewish learning that will resonate in his or her unique language.

Meredith co-founded Matan and, with a dedicated team of colleagues, drove its growth and evolution over the past two decades, resulting in an acclaimed enterprise, still the product of one young woman's irrepressible vision.

    Episode 042 - The One-Armed Sharpshooter: A Conversation with Izzy Ezagui Jul 16, 2018
    Show notes

    ABOUT THIS EPISODE

Izzy Ezagui grew up in a regular Jewish family in Miami, Florida. But his adult life has been anything but "regular"; while serving in the IDF, a rocket attack destroyed Izzy's arm. He knew, however, that his life would not be derailed, that he would not only resume living but would return to once again serve his country. After intensive rehab and quite a bit of persuasion, Izzy found himself back in service, and in fact elevated his skills and his unit status to become a special forces sharpshooter.

Today Izzy lives in Los Angeles, pursuing a career as an actor and screenwriter. He often highlights themes of determination and overcoming seemingly insurmountable odds, a reflection of his own improbable life journey.

His memoir, "Disarmed: Unconventional Lessons from the World's Only One-Armed Special Forces Sharpshooter," can be found on Amazon or wherever books are sold.

Episode 041 - The EMET Founder: A Conversation with Sarah Stern Jul 09, 2018
    Show notes

    ABOUT THIS EPISODE

Sarah Stern considers herself shy and unassuming, but when it comes to Israel she is a fierce warrior for truth and righteousness. A lifelong Zionist, who worked in major pro-Israel organizations, ultimately determined to strike out on her own to promote messages she wasn't hearing elsewhere.

Along the way, she has encountered great defenders of Israel both within and without the Jewish community; her annual "Rays of Light" gala deliberately honors courageous non-Jews - including Arabs and Muslims - who go against the tide in their writing or activism, offering perspectives that promote Israel as a beacon of democracy and light.

Sarah embodies these values no less, and has earned a broad following behind her passion and unwavering, unapologetic commitment.

Episode 040 - The Simon Wiesenthal Dean: A Conversation with Marvin Hier Jul 02, 2018
    Show notes

    ABOUT THIS EPISODE

A product of mainstream Jewish schools on New York's Lower East Side, Marvin Hier was an unlikely candidate to launch a global movement memorializing the Holocaust and combating anti-Semitism. But after a promising career in synagogue rabbinics and high school education, an empty building and a call from Frank Sinatra changed it all.

Hear Rabbi Hier's riveting tale of growth and passion: from his charming New York childhood, to his pulpit in Vancouver, and ultimately to the gilded streets of Hollywood, where his impact blossomed. Whether delivering an invocation at the Trump inauguration, to attending the Israeli Embassy dedication in Jerusalem, to building a massive new museum center in the Holy City, Rabbi Hier has remained busy building a better world and ensuring the flourishing of the Jewish people and oppressed peoples the world over.

Episode 039 - The Chassidic Judge: A Conversation with Ruchie Freier Jun 11, 2018
    Show notes

    ABOUT THIS EPISODE

Ruchie Freier's conventional religious background did not foreshadow the activism and professional achievements of her adult life. But to hear her passionately describe her life and community, it is precisely those values that have galvanized her in these activities.

As the first female chassidic judge elected in New York - and perhaps worldwide - she has been a trailblazer for years, helping kids-at-risk in the community, founding an all-female EMT brigade, and a host of other projects.

In this conversation, we cover these amazing initiatives, her reception in the broader chassidic community and her aspirations for the Jewish People.

Episode 038 - The Moishe House Founder: A Conversation with David Cygielman Jun 04, 2018
    Show notes

    ABOUT THIS EPISODE

As a student at UCSB in the 1990's, David Cygielman would never have dreamed he would one day be running one of the most active young Jewish organizations in the world. But a "chance" encounter with then-80-year-old psychiatrist, inventor and philanthropist Morris Squire (OBM) altered his trajectory and set in motion a revolution in young adult Jewish programming.

Moishe House currently operates at over 100 locations in more than 20 countries, and growing. In this wide-ranging conversation, learn how it all started, about the young man who dared to dream and the iconoclastic older man who supported him in the process. Learn also about the existential challenges Moishe House faced in 2008, and the vexing process of transformation from a feel-good "mom-and-pop" to an international force with broad organizational needs.

This is a story that is both charming and inspiring, and its central character, David Cygielman, continues to write his next chapters in a quest to enhance the Jewish landscape.
